ALSO: THANK YOU MR. CAHILL

PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE BY TIMOTHY A. HOWE

O

ne of the first Jesuits who worked closely with St. Ignatius used to say that there were three kinds of houses in the Society: the professed houses, the schools and the road. I’ve spent a lot of time on the road this year! In the Fall, Ralph Nardini and I did an east coast swing through Washington, Philadelphia and New York. Then in January we traveled to Phoenix. In February, Steve and Terry Schrantz

opened their home to over 80 alums, their wives and friends for our annual Mass and reunion in Naples, Florida. The next day we traveled to Ocean Reef and visited our board chair Mr. Mike McGraw and his wife, along with some other very good friends of St. X. March found alumni director John Schrantz and me in the San Francisco Bay Area. In April I was in in St. Louis. On July 7, we’ll have our second annual Northern Michigan Mass and reunion at the Cassady home in Leland. The Long Blue Line is also wide, as our graduates have spread across the country and around the world. When I meet with them and hear about their lives after St. X, I think of the image from Ezekiel where the water flows out in every direction from the temple. Where these waters flow they refresh; everything lives where the river goes. (47.9) Men have achieved success in their careers, everything from teaching and finance to medicine and hi-tech. But they haven’t forgotten the call to be Men for Others. Most have found some way to volunteer their expertise and generously support some educational or non-profit effort in their community. All are grateful for what they received during their four years at St. Xavier and want to give back. So whether you live in the Greater

Cincinnati area or someplace far away, I hope you’ll stay in touch. Stop by school or come to the reunion when we visit your area. Several alums told me how they weren’t sure whether they would feel comfortable coming to an event where they didn’t know if a classmate would be there or not. Quickly they discover that they have an instant bond with men who have attended St. X in a different year or even a different decade, because they have all been formed into a Xavier Man Forever. And they are gratified to discover the community of Bombers that surrounds them in their new hometown. I hope these groups will continue to connect informally throughout the year. A good-sized group of alumni in Los Angeles met for dinner last month. One Bay Area alum invited the others to come to his house and watch a St. X football game on his big screen in the Fall. Feel free to contact our Alumni Office if we can help publicize these events in your area.

“Whether you live in the Greater Cincinnati area or someplace far away, I hope you’ll stay in touch.”

Class of 2012

Commencement Exercises June 6, 2012, 378 young men were welcomed into the Long Blue Line of St. Xavier alumni. The class of 2012 followed the members of the Class of 1962 into the Cintas Center for the graduation ceremony. The alumni from the Class of 1962 upheld the tradition of the 50 year anniversary class leading the procession. Principal David Mueller acknowledged both the alumni and soon to be graduates: “Graduates, I’ll be long gone when, in 2062, you celebrate the 50th anniversary of your graduation. As much as the world is changing year by year, who knows what it will be like in 2062. The men and women behind me, your teachers, have guided you to begin to develop the knowledge and skills to help you meet these changes. And beyond simply meeting these changes, your teachers and I are confident that you will play a large role in shaping the changes. Seniors, we have been impressed by your intelligence, positive leadership, and orientation towards service. To me your most winning attribute has been your good spirit and your knack for building relationships. I wish that I could be around in 50 years to look back on the ways in which you have guided the world in the spirit of the Jesuit motto of Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, All for the Greater Glory of God.” Benjamin Weiner spoke on behalf of the senior class 2012. Mr. Rob Davis of the St. Xavier Class of 1984 was the commencement speaker. Principal Dave Mueller announced the following as receiving special achievement awards: The J. Harold Kotte, M.D. Biology Award is given to the senior who demonstrates zeal for knowledge and skills in the life sciences as evidenced by academic achievement in a range of life sciences courses as well as commitment to life

The President’s dinner On TueSDAy MAy 1, St. Xavier High School President Fr. Timothy Howe, S.J. welcomed more than 450 St. Xavier High School benefactors to the Schiff Family Conference Center on the campus of Xavier university. He offered his deepest thanks for the continued support they provide in so many ways so that the promise and mission of a Catholic, Jesuit education at St. Xavier is made possible for our 1,548 current students and for countless future members of the Long Blue Line. During the celebration the audience was entertained by the St. Xavier Strings ensemble “Chamber Blues” under the direction of Mr. Isaac M. Watras and the choral group “ensemble X” under the direction of Mr. Karl S. Thomsen. Fr. 2012 X-Travaganza AnD COnneCT We DID. This year marked the inaugural year of X-Travaganza under new Director Mrs. Cathy Cionni. Cathy and her more than 700 volunteers worked tirelessly again this year for the young men of St. Xavier High School. Chairing the event this year were current parents David and Sarah Klein along with co-chairs Joe and Maria Arcuri. The 2012 X-Travaganza was a rousing success. This year’s X-Trav generated $749,190. The Grand Raffle, chaired by Paul and Laura Curry and Phil and Lela Collins, had another banner year contributing $235,690. The monies generated from X-Travaganza go towards tuition assistance and helping our faculty and staff to educate the young men of St. Xavier by giving them the tools necessary to work with our young men. The countless hours of preparation and incredible volunteer effort again raised the bar of expectations. Thank you to our more than 700 volunteers and to the wonderful generosity of those attending both the auction night as well as our Friday night lead in event chaired this year by Mike and Heidi Mechley–Felton. Thank you also to Tom and Michele Gill and Tom Gill Chevrolet for being our presenting sponsor and to PnC Bank for sponsoring this year’s Grand Raffle. With more than 700 volunteers it is impossible to thank everyone…but please know that your hard work and dedication truly are appreciated and make a difference for the boys.

Bidding fast and furious!

X-Travaganza 2013: 40th Anniversary Celebration! That’s right! now that we’ve made our ConneXions to the World and seen that “The Sky’s the Limit,” it’s time to bid farewell to X-Travaganza 2012 and welcome X-Travaganza 2013! Maria and Joe Acuri will be our chairpersons for the event next year, and they’re asking for your help. There are plenty of ways to become involved. Call 513-761-7815 ext. 111, 113, or 117. Whether it’s hosting a gift gathering party, participating in the Grand Raffle phone-a-thons, donating an item for auction, or putting your talents to the test by helping to plan and execute the event, you’re sure to have a great time, meeting great people, all working toward the common goal: making a St. Xavier education possible for every member of the student body. The year 2013 marks X-Travaganza’s 40th anniversary in providing tuition assistance and educational programs benefitting the students at St. Xavier. Special surprises will be planned to commemorate this amazing milestone throughout the year! We kick off XTravaganza 2013 as we have the previous two years with the Third Annual Ladies’ nine-Hole Golf Outing at Maketewah Country Club on September 26, 2012. It’s a scramble with a shotgun start. But have no fear! you don’t have to be a seasoned golfer to participate. This is a fun way to meet other St. X moms, grandmothers, aunts, and female supporters of the school. If you aren’t already part of a foursome, we’ll find one for you. Dinner and cocktails will be served following golf. Please consider attending even if you don’t wish to participate in the scramble. We especially look forward to welcoming the Class of 2016 moms. If you’d like to be part of the planning committee for this event, please contact the X-Travaganza office. Throughout X-Travaganza 2013’s 40th anniversary

season, we’ll also have events like the Online Auction to help jumpstart the holiday shopping season. you can find amazing items to give as gifts or buy for yourself. X-Travaganza’s First night celebration is the kick-off to the main XTravaganza event/live auction. Held on Friday night, it’s a casual environment filled with raffles, great food, a silent auction, and fabulous entertainment by St. Xavier’s own music students. This year, St. Xavier’s Drum Line provided a lively performance enjoyed by everyone. X-Travaganza’s premiere event and Live Auction take place on Saturday night. Complete with a sit-down, catered meal, this more formal evening is an opportunity to dress up and party down, bidding on fabulous items in both the silent and live auctions. Prizes include lavish vacations, fantastic travel and sporting activities, fine jewelry, family pets, and so much more. Whether you prefer something more laid back like First night or something more formal like X-Travaganza, mark your calendars now for March 8 & 9, 2013! SUMMEr 2012

We Are... St. X Student Broadcasting Club Launches ESPX THe IDeA FOR this club began back in 2005 when St. X began web streaming football, basketball and some baseball games on the school’s website. Back then it was audio only. now fans can watch games via computer just like watching TV as the Bombers play host to some of the best teams in the country. This year the student broadcasting club, under the direction of Mr. Tony Schad, Mr. Isaac Watras, Mr. Justin Wilson and Mr. Jeff Holt, took over video streaming football, basketball and volleyball games. For football, the students provided all the camera work for home games while

Tony Schad and Ralph nardini provided live play-by-play simulcast on both the St. X web site and Fox Sports Radio 1360 AM, WSAI. For basketball and volleyball the student broadcasting club took over in totality providing crisp, articulate play by play to go along with incredible videography. Through their efforts, alumni and friends from around the world stay in touch with St. Xavier High School vicariously through our athletic programs. This year also saw the launching of the weekly student run programming…eSPX. eSPX brought the St. Xavier community

a weekly update on all things St. Xavier from seniors Rich Hidy and Andy Wittry. Complete with guest interviews, Rich and Andy talked about baseball to TX and everything in between. you can find the eSPX broadcasts under news headlines at the beginning of each week on the St. Xavier web page.

Bombers Bring Home the gCl all Sports Trophy THe ST. XAVIeR BOMBeRS took back the GCL All-Sports Trophy, after a one-year hiatus from north Bend Road. It is the 31st All-Sports Trophy captured by the Bombers in the 49-year history of the award and the 10th in the last 12 years. “We strive to do the best we can at everything we do. It doesn’t make any difference if you are working in the classroom, the arts, community service or on the athletic field,” said St. Xavier Athletic Director John Sullivan. “We play in a tremendous league with great schools, so this is a great achievement. All the credit goes to our scholar athletes, coaches, parents and alumni. It is a team effort all the way around.” Of the 12 team sports that accumulate points for the All Sports Trophy, St. X won the league championship in seven. X won the GCL in cross country, golf, soccer, bowling, swimming and tennis. St. X finished 2nd in the league in football, baseball and volleyball; third in wrestling and basketball. Wins! Congratulations Coach King HeAD TennIS COACH Russ “Tiger” King ’63 recorded his 700th career win as the Bombers defeated the elder Panthers 5-0 on April 2nd at St. X . It was King’s 562nd win as a Bomber. It was Coach King’s 28th season with St. Xavier’s tennis program, and over that time span, he has accumulated a record of 562-58. He also coached girls’ tennis at St. ursula from 1991-2000 during the fall seasons, where he went 138-33. His overall record is now 700-91. “I couldn’t have done it without all those great players,” said King. “It’s really a reflection of all the fantastic players of which I have been lucky enough to coach. I’ve enjoyed every win, some especially more than others. I’ve coached about 700 players over the years, so it’s really a win for every kid I’ve coached.” The St. X tennis program has been extremely strong under King’s leadership. He led the Bombers to two state doubles championships in 2002 and 2006 while winning team

championships in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. His teams have returned to the Final Four numerous times over the years. He has also led the Bombers to 29 GCL titles in a row. (The program has now won 45 GCL titles in a row.) After 28 years of coaching, Coach King has a lot of experience and knowledge that he has passed on to not only his players, but also other coaches. Mark Wilkins, a dedicated religion teacher at St. X who has coached with King for more than ten years now, says he’s learned a lot from him: “He’s taught me a lot about the game of tennis and has allowed me to focus more on the mental aspects of the game, while the other coaches focus on the physical aspects. He’s given me great freedom to do with our kids what we need to prepare them to become varsity players. King’s system works.” Congratulations Coach King!

academic Awards Ceremony SAInT XAVIeR HIGH held the annual Academic Awards Assembly on Tuesday, May 22, to honor the accomplishments of St. Xavier students in their classroom studies, as well as in academically connected activities outside school. This year 105 students were recognized for leading the way academically for the 2011-12 school year.

His paper depicts the early Jesuits in Cincinnati and the beginnings of St. Xavier College (of which St. Xavier High School was a part) from the arrival of the Jesuits in 1840 through 1865. The project was started during the tenure of former president Fr. Walter Deye, S.J. ’66 as a part of The Living Walls and have been enjoyed by faculty, students, alumni and friends since their arrival. Out of the project grew a need for a more in depth look at the whole history of the school. Many hours of research and writing are combined in this article, as it looks at the early years of the school. To read Fr. Ahern’s project go to: www.stxavier.org/earlyyears.

Perfect Scores on the aCT yOu HAVe undoubtedly heard the old adage, “Great things happen in threes.” Well it happened again here at St. Xavier as three students registered perfect scores on the ACT. This year Jacob Martin ’12, Jackson Bowers ’13 and Alex Bailey ’13 scored perfectly.

Faculty/Staff Celebrate with Each Other eACH yeAR, the St. Xavier faculty and staff gathers to appreciate one another and the great efforts made for the young men of St. X. They also come together to honor years of service to St. Xavier and Catholic education. In addition they honor and say good bye to those leaving at the end of the school year. This year’s dinner was held on May 23 and true to form...the night had it all. There was a lot of laughter and some tears were shed. But above all, there was a great deal of love, respect, caring and community. Principal Dave Mueller emceed the event. The highlights of the evening were the tributes to four incredible people who have changed the face of St. Xavier High School for the better because of their time, talents and dedication. Those being honored were: Mrs. Barb Hausladen (tribute by Mrs. Jill Thurman), Mr. Dan Hogan (tribute by Mr. ed nardini), Mr. Bob Stautberg (tribute by Mr. Dave Mueller) and Mr. Jim Cahill (tribute by Mr. John Hussong). Other milestones in Catholic education were celebrated but the astounding acknowledgement was for Mr. Karl Hauck for his 50 years at St. Xavier High School.

am finally graduating from St. Xavier High School. My provisional graduation took place with my classmates in 1972, and then I returned for 34 more years, first as an english teacher and eventually as principal. now, having learned so much through my experiences here, I move on to a new challenge. I’m fortunate to have worked for so many years at a school whose mission has engaged my passions, used all of my skills, and pushed me to learn and grow. I’m grateful that I expect that the mission of my new place of work will engage me just as deeply. I am thankful for so many people at St. Xavier. I’m grateful for students past and present. Just today, as I was accompanying a group of seniors-to-be on a mission trip in Over-the-Rhine, I bumped into a student council president from years ago. It’s fun to suddenly see past students, now adults, for the first time since high school and catch up on their lives. The intervening years vanish, and the differences between the 18-yearold and the 40-year-old are stark…yet some traces of the 18-year-old always remain. I’m grateful that working with young people has kept me young at heart. I’m grateful for parents past and present. Along with their sons, St. Xavier parents commit to the school mission. I have had the privilege of joining parents to accompany students during service work, especially at St. Vincent de Paul. I’m thankful for the spirit and support of booster groups such as the Music Promoters and the Athletic Boosters. I have treasured my relationships with members of the parent groups with

Editor’s Note: Principal David Mueller has announced that he will be stepping down as principal of St. Xavier High School, effective July 31 to become principal of Mother of Mercy High School. St. Xavier thanks Mr. Mueller for 34 years of faithful service, first as an English teacher and then as principal for the past 19 years. We thank him for generously sharing his talents with the St. Xavier community and wish him all the best with his new endeavor. whom I’ve worked most closely, the Mothers’ Club and Parents Across Cultures. Parents pour their hearts and talents into the school. I’m grateful for the school’s benefactors. Having served on planning teams for construction projects, having guided faculty professional development, and knowing the impact of tuition assistance awards, I have seen how benefactors’ dollars have impacted the lives of students and their teachers. I’m grateful for occasions when I’ve seen the look on benefactors’ faces as they’ve walked through a newly constructed space or met a student they’ve sponsored. I’m grateful for the Jesuits. All of us are beneficiaries of their faith, their inspirational world view, and their commitment to learning and service. Because of the foresight and generosity of the Jesuits, colleagues and I have been able to visit places that were crucial in the life of Ignatius, we’ve been able to share ideas with colleagues in the network of Jesuit schools, and we’ve been able to experience the Spiritual Exercises. I’m grateful for my colleagues. I can’t imagine a better high school faculty and staff. With the benefit of advice from department heads, I had the privilege of hiring all of the present academic administrators, about two thirds of the faculty, and many

staff members. I see the quality of the faculty, staff, and academic administration as my most positive impact on the school. Ignatius begins the Spiritual Exercises with the foundational idea “It’s all a gift from God.” I thank God for my years at St. Xavier. I pray that all members of the extended school community will continue to keep the school on the course that God intends for it. John Hussong, the most veteran St. Xavier teacher (and my english teacher in 1970-71), put it well at the closing faculty/staff prayer service in May. He prayed in thanksgiving for “the great ship St. Xavier that sails on so well” even as crew members come and go. Please pray for me as I venture into my new work.

For the Greater good THE STRATEGIC PLAN FOR ST. XAVIER HIGH SCHOOL IN THE fAll Of 2011 St. Xavier Magazine introduced readers to the year-long strategic plan process of St. Xavier High School. Now, more than half way through the process, the large team of people that includes faculty, staff, administration, students, alumni and current parents is about 75% complete. Bill Mulvihill ’65 and Tim Schroeder ’75, co-chairs of the planning effort, took some time to answer questions about the process and progress of this large and important undertaking.

Tim Schroder (’75) (left) and Bill Mulvihill (’65) (right) are spearheading the strategic plan process.

st. X: We are almost a year into the strategic plan process…please give us some insight on your view of the progress to date. tim: I believe that significant progress has been made. We have engaged a very large group of the St. X constituents including faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents and trustees and the response has been remarkable. It is clear that each of the groups are incredibly passionate about the school and are very generous with their time and talents. The outpouring of thoughtful input has really been amazing.

st. X: What are you most pleased with about the process? BiLL: We have been pleased with the collaboration of faculty, parents, students, staff and trustees; the transparency of the process…the willingness to openly

challenge each other’s positions. The absolute commitment to making St. X the best it can be, maintaining rich tradition while building an exciting future. tim: We are especially grateful to the members of the five committees representing each of the constituents for leading this effort and the individuals who have served as chairpersons of these committees. They have served tirelessly throughout. We have been very impressed with the enthusiastic discussions and passionate views that have moved the process along.

st. X: Why is a project like this important?

BiLL: In education, as in life, you are either getting better or falling behind. The status quo is simply not good enough for tHe greAter good and has never been what St. X and Jesuit education is all about. It is our sacred duty to constantly improve our efforts and formAtion And CAtHoLiC/Jesuit identity provide the most rigorous (Co-Chairs: Dick Haglage and Dan Minelli) possible experience for the young men entrusted into eduCAtion And fACuLty our care. It is important to (Co-Chairs Ann Berger and Steve Bradley) our St. X families, BuiLding/grounds And it the Greater Cincinnati (Co-Chairs Chris Zimmerman and Richard Hirte) Community and beyond. finAnCe And AdvAnCement tim: It is imperative that all (Co-Chairs Tom Gill and Tony Schad) organizations look inward and outward at regular intermArKeting And enroLLment (Co-Chairs Rob Davis and Mike Dehring) vals to assess themselves. process due to changes in demographics, economics and technology that all can profoundly affect the educational landscape. With all these changes ongoing it is critical to look at how these variables impact our ability to be true to our mission.

st. X: Please elaborate about the inclusion of so many groups being involved. BiLL: It was important from the beginning and will be important going forward that all stakeholders take ownership of this effort. There is an old saying “People support that which they help create.” This plan will be the end result of the work of many for the greater good of all.

st. X: What stage of the process are we in now? tim: I would say that we are in the early steps of the final stage of the process….the analogy to a baseball season might be that we are in the middle of August with our sights set on a fall championship. The hard work of the previous winter and spring are behind us but it is critical to finish very strong. The next steps involve taking more than 70 initiatives and assessing their priorities to the school and its future. We must be certain that these strategic objectives, that are critical to our future success, have the appropriate resources, timelines, budget and personnel to ensure a measurable impact on the organization in the coming years. THANK YOU Mr. Cahill

S

t. Xavier English department head John Hussong faced an unexpected situation. The late Fr. Don Nastold, S.J. had to leave his position in the English department to move into the principal’s job. John quickly and wisely tapped a familiar, trusted source for assistance—XU English department head, the legendary Fr. Tom Savage, S.J. Savage recommended one of his M.A. candidates to take over the second semester at St. X. Thus it was then that young Jim Cahill (’64) arrived at St. X to share teaching duties with Hussong, as a he completed his fellowship and his graduate work at XU. Jim’s work that semester earned him a full-time contract for the following year, and the year after that, and the year after that, for 43 years. The hiring of Cahill, along with his Xavier classmate, the late Tom Meyer (’63), added two all-stars to an 14

TEXT by PAUL J. ZOOK (’57) already outstanding English department (and perhaps made up for the hiring of Paul Zook, the author of this article, to the department the year before.) Described by all who know him, who were taught by him or who worked with him as a consummate professional educator, Jim brought to St. X a passion for his subject matter, his students and the school. Over the course of his career, he taught students of all four years (although he was not blessed with a sophomore class until just before retirement—a blessing which only those who have attempted to teach poetry to sophomores the final period of the school day can truly appreciate!). Jim was noted for his love of Shakespeare and his ability to convey that love to his senior elective classes. Whether teaching Shakespeare or senior AP English classes, he always taught the art of clear and thoughtful writing—another of his deeply held passions.

My guess is that John Hussong saw this trait when he hired Jim and Tom Meyer in 1969. He knew that the English department’s tradition of promoting good, clear, thoughtful, reasoned expression was safe in the hands of these newcomers as they helped guide a freshman (whose idea of writing a “composition” is to begin putting words on a paper, counting those words until reaching the number prescribed by the teacher and immediately putting aside the pen or shutting off the word processor) to the upper classman (who knows what he wants to say, assembles the facts or arguments to support his thesis and then hands in his paper, which will be returned to him with helpful suggestions for ways to present his arguments even more forcefully.) Jim’s work in the classroom was interrupted in 1984 when he was invited by Dick Klus to join us in the development department. Jim, as alumni

director, brought the same friendliness, openness and good grace that had served him so well with his students and fellow faculty members. In 1990, development lost a valuable member, but our students regained their exceptional teacher when Jim decided that “I really think that I am a better teacher than alumni director.” The astute reader has by now realized that this story is more personal than objective. With an apology to Shakespeare and his Marc Antony, I admit that I have come to praise Jim Cahill, not to bury him. My words however, merely reflect in some small way the sentiments of students and colleagues alike. Word of Jim’s impending retirement spread quickly causing those who have known him to reflect about the man and what he has meant to the school. Fellow faculty members unanimously described him as “a gentleman,” “a teacher dedicated to his students,” as a man “who brought his love for literature and his passion for good writing” to his classes and communicated this love and passion to them, a man with a “quick but never mean wit” reminding several of them of the late-night television host Johnny Carson. Principal Dave Mueller (’72) notes that fellow faculty members held Jim in high regard. “When Jim spoke at faculty meetings, people listened. He was never shy to speak out about things he believed in whether the idea was popular or not. I would call him a courageous, articulate gentleman.” Dave Mueller shared a number of student evaluations of Jim Cahill’s with the comment that he and English department chairman Dave Clapp were amazed at the universally positive responses to Jim’s classes, particularly Shakespeare. The sampling of comments that follow is typical of the students’ opinions about their experiences. The words “fun, funny, energetic and passionate” appear frequently. “He is a very funny and likeable teacher who keeps students laughing and interested, yet he does so while speaking mostly about Shakespeare.” “He really gets the students involved and excited on the subject. He makes the class not only interesting, but also fun.” “Shakespeare can get tedious at times, but not with Mr. Cahill.” “He’s always passionate about the subject and I come to class every day excited about the reading.” “Mr. Cahill is a wonderful teacher to have. He makes the class interesting by being himself.” “His overall intensity and enjoyment of Shakespeare rubs off on

you and makes you feel the same.” “He is hilarious and I love to tell my friends about his insight.” “He shows a genuine interest in everyone he teaches, and this personal example affected me a great deal.” “He has rekindled my interest in literature, especially Shakespeare.” “Ever since I was young, I had always dreamed of having a teacher that was amazing, and then I met Mr. Cahill. He fulfilled those expectations.” “Mr. Cahill is a champ.” “He is the man.” Words of John Hussong, the English department head who hired Jim Cahill, and Dave Clapp, the current department head, provide a suitable ending to this tribute to Jim’s 43-year St. Xavier career. Both men are long-time colleagues and close personal friends of Jim. Their reflections reaffirmed all of the good comments recorded above and provide a warm sendoff. Hussong recalled the “young rookie” recommended to him by Fr. Tom Savage, S.J. He was not greatly surprised that this rookie could come into a high school class-

room and so effectively teach courses in Shakespeare and senior AP English. Over the years Hussong appreciated ever more deeply this Irish scholar’s “combination of Hamlet, Cole Porter and Johnny Carson” as he phrased it: “Hamlet for tone, Porter for smooth and Carson for dry wit.” Clapp put it this way, “I know he will miss St. X. This place is so important to him and he loves it so much. I really think it is tough for him to walk away. If he was ever disappointed, it was because he held the school in such high esteem and for so long. It is clear in everything he does, and if he ever complained, his final comment would be, ‘You know, for all its flaws and they are legion (said tongue firmly in cheek), this is still a great place.’ I believe that and I think this is a sincere statement and what he has lived. He has seen this place from many different angles, from his time as a student, as a development professional and teacher. And he has done all things well.” X Cameras catch Mr. Cahill in action during one of his very last English classes at St. X.

in a Big Way

He is and has been a very successful pharmacist, investor, philanthropist and collector/hobbyist. He is a member of the St. Xavier High School St. Francis Xavier Society as well as the Fr. Wieber Society. On June 6, 2012 Assistant Vice President for Development Tony Schad ’81, Major Gifts Officer Ed Franchi and Major Gifts Officer Andrew Sweeny ’68 had the pleasure of spending the morning with Mr. Alvin Wulfekuhl from the class of 1951 at Mr. Wulfekuhl’ s home in Clifton. This article will not do the conversation or the time spent justice. It is impossible. Wulfekuhl’s laugh is hearty and his recollections were mesmerizing.

Louis ALvin WuLfekuhL, best known as Alvin because he said there were way to many men named Louis in his family, has lived his entire life in and around Cincinnati, from the West End, to Bond Hill to Clifton. His father, Louis, was a graduate of the St. Xavier Class of 1918. Alvin recalled that his father received a four year scholarship to St. X. He said that without that scholarship he would have never been able to attend high school at all, let alone St. X, as his grandfather had never earned more than $25 a week. His father attended St. Henry’s in the West End. St. Henry’s was known for sending a lot of kids to St. Xavier and, at the time, was the premier Catholic grade school in Cincinnati. His father’s experience with the Jesuits was excellent and it was very important to him that Alvin, his only son, went to the school then on Seventh and Sycamore. Although his father’s plans were to send Alvin to X, the nuns at his grade school, St. Agnes, questioned if he could handle the academic rigor. With some tutoring and help from the nuns, Alvin passed the entrance exam. In time he would flourish at St. Xavier. While he

laughs that he wasn’t the best student, his records show he was an honor roll student all four years. Wulfekuhl recalled that he was the smallest kid in his class. He was not gifted athletically. He said he didn’t always make the smart decision. He reacted with fervor when asked about having experienced J.U.G., also known as Justice Under God. With a resounding laugh, he recalled being asked by one of the Jesuits to write about his impression of J.U.G. His reply said, “The guilty got right by ‘em and the innocent were always jugged!” The wry smile and laughter revealed the truth. No he didn’t always make the smart decision! That said, Wulfekuhl commented, “I never had a bad experience with my teachers at St. X and I had the utmost respect for the Jesuits.” He recalled some of his favorite teachers; Fr. Diamond, S.J. for English and Latin, Fr. Brown, S.J. for mathematics and Doc Brennan and Fr. Munson, S.J. guided him in science… a field in which he would spend the majority of his life working as a pharmacist. He enjoyed his classmates. In fact he said, “I liked the guys I went to school with without exception.” He still enjoys getting together with members of his class that meet monthly at Willie’s in Covington. Alvin said his goals after becoming a pharmacist were to take care of his parents, build a solid financial foundation for himself and to help people. Being a pharmacist and a good investor helped him do that. He was the senior class treasurer. When asked if that started him down the path of a

successful financial life he chuckled and said, “Yes, I suppose it did. I had forgotten I was class treasurer.” What he did not forget however was what his St. X education has meant to him, “A lot of the success in my life I owe to St. Xavier. “That is why he gives back. As with his choice of a career, he wants to help people. That is why he is a St. Francis Xavier Society member with his yearly gifts to the Annual Fund. “I made mistakes. I was not the brightest. I just want to repay the Jesuits in some way.” Mr. Wulfekuhl has also had the forethought to make a planned gift to St. Xavier High School in his estate. His planned gift is through a Charitable Remainder Trust that he worked on with the help of his financial advisors. With a charitable remainder trust, a person can receive income each year for the rest of the person’s life from assets given to the trust created. Income can be either variable or a fixed amount. After the person’s lifetime, the balance in the trust goes to the charities of choice. In this case one of the charities that Mr. Wulfekuhl has chosen is St. Xavier High School. Gifts of this nature can be transformational for the mission of St. X. As the discussion unfortunately was coming to a close, the Class of 1951 representative was asked what advice he had for the members of the 2012 St. X

class graduating that evening. “That’s a good question. I suppose it would be to do your best. Do good. Avoid evil. I guess it is pretty simple. Not easy, but simple.” As was mentioned on the preceding page, this article will not do justice to the conversation and time spent with Mr. Wulfekuhl. We hope it does give our alumni and friends a snap shot into the life of an extraordinary man; the smallest guy in his class who has helped his alma mater in such a big way… the smallest guy in his class upon whose shoulders the tradition of Jesuit, Catholic education continues at St. Xavier. X

Alumni/Faculty Q & A

Joe Conway (’78)

Joe Conway is a graduate of the St. Xavier Class of 1978. Joe has a BA from Carelton College, a MBA from Miami of Ohio and a PhD from the University of Cincinnati. He began his teaching career in 1994 and has been teaching science at St. Xavier since 1998. Joe and his wife Peg have two sons; Michael ’10 and Christian ’14. st. X: Joe, you and your family epitomize the long blue line of st. Xavier. what is it like to be a current parent, parent of an alum, faculty member and alum all wrapped in one? JOe: From my various perspectives, I have

grown to appreciate the truth of the adage that there is a place for everyone at St. X. I notice it most as a parent because my sons are so different from each other yet each found a home at St. X. I see it in my students and it helps to remind me that I, too, must be ready to help make St. X a home for all the young men I encounter as a teacher.

st. X: Outside the classroom, what else are you involved with at X? what co-curriculars? JOe: I am the moderator of the Finance

Club, a Kairos director and member of the Kairos Board that oversees the operations of the retreats. I am completing my fourth year on the Disciplinary Board that is charged with reviewing major disciplinary cases and advising the assistant principals on matters of discipline. I serve on the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees as well as the Strategic Planning Committee. Finally, I am vice

president of the St. Xavier Faculty Association.

st. X: You have been a part of the strategic Planning Process with your role on the finance and advancement committee. How has that experience been? JOe: My time on the Strategic Planning

Committee has opened my eyes to the true wealth of St. Xavier High School, the people who form the community that is St. X. I am amazed by the talents and generosity of the people on this committee. They are members of the board, administration, staff, faculty, current and past parents, students, alums, and friends of the school. I cannot leave a meeting without a sense of confidence in the future of St. Xavier; there is no problem that we might face that could not be solved by a community with so many talented people, like those on the committee, supporting our efforts!

st. X: You and your wife Peg have supported st. Xavier with your time, talents and treasures. why is it important to the two of you to support st. X High school? JOe: We support St. Xavier out of a gratitude that has grown over the years

from many encounters with St. Xavier. Common to all these experiences is the nurturing and loving people who have impacted people we care about. St. Xavier is a large school, but St. X. is also a loving community committed to the care of its students.

st. X: How does your teaching philosophy fit with the mission of st. Xavier? JOe: The Grad at Grad calls us to go

beyond teaching facts and to focus on thinking. I cannot really teach a student to think, the process is idiosyncratic and not easily described; the students must find their own way. I use chemistry as a venue to practice thinking. Chemistry is a complex subject, that requires the student to create links between concepts, and the material is foreign to most of the students. In this context, the students must let go of their old way of learning and search for a new approach. Their task is often frustrating. So it is important that they know that someone cares, that someone is there to help, and that we can laugh together as we do the hard work of learning.

st. X: what makes st. X st. X? what are the variables? JOe: The heart of St. X is a very diverse set

of individuals working together toward a common goal in an environment that encourages the individual to discover their own gifts and to bring those gifts together with the gifts of others for the good of all. There is no single “correct” way to teach. There are teachers with a great variety of gifts focused on reaching our mission as described by the Grad at Grad. This goes beyond the faculty repeated in all facets of the institution.

Zust Works Hard and Realizes Dream ADAM ZUST (’12) had the same dream of every young man entering St. Xavier High School, to graduate and join the Long Blue Line. But just a few months into his senior year, everything changed. Adam suffered a severe stroke and missed nearly 60 days of school. The months after his stroke were proof positive of Adam’s determination and perseverance. The rest of his senior year his classes were cut back, but he continued to work hard. With the help of his family, doctors, and many at St. X, Adam progressively got better, but did not have the classes needed to receive the coveted St. Xavier diploma in 2011. It was at that time St. X offered Adam the opportunity to return the next year, again as a senior, so he could graduate from St. Xavier High School. Adam accepted this opportunity and throughout this past year showed incredible progress. Adam worked with Dr. Charlene Ponti, Mr. Mike Daley, Mr. Tony Hodun, Mr. Jim Jurgens and Mr. Bill Sandquist to create a schedule and class load giving him enough credits to graduate. “Adam’s optimism and work ethic is a living symbol of everything St. X stands for,” said Mike Daley. On June 6, 2012, Adam’s dream came true. He was able to walk up and receive his St. Xavier High School diploma with his family cheering him on.

adam celebrates graduation with grandma irene, his mom amy and grandma dorlene.

“I cried before graduation,” said Adam. “No one thought it would happen, but I have improved so much over the past year. It was wonderful to graduate.” Adam’s mother, Amy Zust, said, “Watching Adam graduate was such an emotional moment for all of us! Adam has shown such incredible strength, courage and determination in his battle to recover, despite overwhelming odds against him. Walking to that podium to receive his St. X diploma was tangible proof to

all of us, especially Adam, of just how far he’s come and what a miracle he really is! It’s also a testament to the St. Xavier staff, especially Mr. Sandquist, who have shown us in so many ways that being “Men for Others” is more than just a school motto, but a truth to live by. Their support and encouragement helped make Adam’s goal of graduating a reality. We feel so blessed to be a part of this amazing St. Xavier family!” Congratulations Adam and welcome to the Long Blue Line!

Becky Schulte St. X Director of Communications and Marketing

alking up the steps for the first time as a staff member at St. Xavier High School, I felt a fluttering feeling in my stomach and my hands began to shake. As I paused to reflect on the significance of this moment, I looked over and saw a young man wide-eyed and bouncing up the steps next to me with nervous excitement. His energy calmed my nerves when he opened the door for me and said “I am going to go to school here one day.” How inspiring to see the hopes and dreams of a boy only just entering the 5th grade. His excitement reconfirmed why I made this choice and why I knew it was the right one. Let’s just say that my first day at St. Xavier was not at all what I had imagined. Yes, everyone was extremely welcoming and kind, that was to be expected. But it was after the first two hours, when a young visitor vomited in my office, that I realized my life at St. Xavier High School was going to be an eventful journey filled with unscripted events and exciting opportunities! St. Xavier became an important part of my life when I met my husband, Mark Schulte ’95, at Ohio University. I remember being enamored with the passion and love you could see in his eyes when he spoke about his high school experiences from being a Bomber Pilot, playing basketball for Coach Berning or serving as a rector at a Kairos retreat. It was obvious that he and his friends were treated like young adults and encouraged to build character as they made decisions like grown men during their college years. He brought me on campus a few times for brief tours where he beamed as he spoke with teachers and administrators. I was able to laugh with T.M. (Tom Meyer ’63) as Mark professed that he only received one J.U.G. during his high school career. And, at his 15 year reunion, we discussed what a perfect fit it would be if I could do what I love in a place with such an amazing influence in shaping the lives of tomorrow’s best and brightest. 26

My passion for education began with my parents who both recently retired after 30 years of teaching (my mom a Kindergarten teacher and my dad a high school World History teacher, baseball and football coach as well as Athletic Director) in Washington Court House, Ohio. The educational experiences in my life don’t stop there. Between my brother, aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws there are 16 educators. Over the years, this special group has helped me understand the dedication and devotion of those who put all their energy into molding the lives of our children through a positive and challenging educational experience. I hope to bring that same dedication and devotion through my role and assist future young men on their journey to become leaders and men for others. I have been very blessed in my life in many ways. My past work experiences have allowed me to use my skill set to serve children and adults with disabilities and most recently at Maple Knoll Communities where I was fortunate enough to work with and learn from some of the most amazing and inspiring older adults the world has ever seen! Besides trying my hand at latenight baking confections and occasional sprint triathlons, I am the mother of two amazing children: Rachel, our dramatic and passionate 7½-yearold daughter and Matthew, our 5-year-old ball of energy who was immediately placed in a Bomber onesie the day of his birth. They both attend St. AndrewSt. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Milford where we are parishioners and where I serve as the PTO President. I am truly looking forward to interacting with students, parents, staff,

faculty, alumni and benefactors. With my work through the website, twitter, LinkedIn, facebook, blog posts, St. Xavier magazine and more, I hope to share the stories and memories that have shaped this dynamic atmosphere for learning and formation. Through my work with the school’s Mission Promotion Committee I hope to create clear and concise messaging to communicate what creates the St. Xavier Advantage. My office is close to the epicenter of all the action, and my door is always open to guarantee I meet as many of you as possible. Accepting the Director of Communications and Marketing position at St. Xavier is truly a dream come true! I have the opportunity to do what I love, work in a top-notch educational setting and contribute to its rich 180-year tradition. So, even though I just found the women’s restroom and I am still hunting for the ice machine, I am diving in head first looking forward to a journey filled with exciting moments, interesting people and memories that will last a lifetime.

Student Q & A

Kevin Reilly (’12)

Kevin Reilly ’12 a west sider from Our Lady of the Visitation, comes from a family that could be viewed as the “poster family” for the Long Blue Line. Kevin is a soft spoken but confident young man who proved to be an excellent student leader while at St. Xavier. Because of his involvement and leadership while at St. Xavier, Kevin was asked to comment on his time at St. Xavier and what it has meant to him. In typically Kevin Reilly fashion, he said yes in a second while also stating it was truly an honor to be asked. The questions and answers below will give you some insight into St. Xavier’s newest Reilly graduate. st. X: How many uncles and cousins have you had come thru st. X? Kevin: My father, Dr. Kevin Reilly (’82),

went through fours years at St. X, as did his seven brothers: Tom (’72), Jim (’74), Mike (’75), Tim (’76), Dan (’78), Gerry (’80), and Eugene (’83). The second generation of St. X Reilly men include my brother Brendan (’14) and cousin Tommy (’15), who are preceded by four of my cousins: Patrick (’01), Gerry (’08), Matthew (’09) and Will (’09). The last of the second generation will hopefully be my youngest brother Sean (’22). I’m sure the walls of St. Xavier will see more of the Reilly Family in the coming years.

st. X: where are you going to school next year…studying? Kevin: Next year I will be attending St.

Louis University in Saint Louis, MO. I am in the Medical Scholars Program and will be spending the majority of my time in Pre-Med studies. (Editor’s Note: Kevin has received the St. Louis University Schwae Scholarship and the SLU Jesuit Heritage grant.)

st. X: what are the things you have been involved with while at st. X? Kevin: As a St. X student, I chose to be

involved in as much as I could handle. I was a four-year football player, a four-year wrestler, and a rugby player for the first two years of the official St. X rugby team. I was involved in the Community Service program through volunteering at Glendale Place Care Center and as a member of the Service Leadership Board, working on school programs such as the Shoe Drive. During my junior and senior years I worked with Mr. Eby on the Student Leadership Team. I was also a chairman on the Student Development Team with Mr. Schad, which assisted faculty and administration in the Development Office by helping to raise funds for financial aid at St. X. I spent a great deal of time and effort within these programs, and I can truly say it was worth every second.

st. X: st. X is obviously important to your family… what does it mean to you about graduating from this place? Kevin: Graduating from St. X is an ac-

complishment I can be proud of because of the tremendous impact the school

has had on me. St. X has pushed me to become a better person mentally, physically, and spiritually. I have had the honor of continuing the legacy of the Long Blue Line; a legacy that will continue to shape me throughout my life. By molding me into a better person for society, St. X has set me up for success in my future years.

st. X: Your brother brendan will graduate in 2014…any advice to him and other current students? Kevin: The best advice I can offer

students who go to St. X is to stay involved. The school has a great network of programs for every type of person. Find something you enjoy doing and share the experience with others. You will develop stronger relationships with fellow students and more meaningful connections to the faculty, making your experience truly meaningful. The more effort a student invests into his time at St. X, the more positive impact the school will have on his future character. It is not only a school with top-notch education; it is a school with a formula that develops young boys into great men.
