JUNIOR RING CEREMONY

NEW PRIDE STAFF BIOS

Staff Writer

by Jasmeen Santos, Class of 2016
The Class of 2016 finally became upperclass women on January 23, 2015. After all of the months of planning and organizing, the ceremony turned out beautiful. There was a lot of thought and time put into it, especially by our Junior President Melissa Castellanos and Vice President Audrie Tapia. They had to communicate with our class moderators, plan who was doing what at the mass, make sure all the rings were in order, and make sure the ceremony turned out the way we’ve all been picturing it since Freshmen year back in 2012. Everyone’s rings are personalized to their desire. I had a pointe dancer and the NHS symbol with an aquamarine stone (my birthstone) on a white gold band. It’s literally me wrapped around my own finger! I can honestly say that finally receiving that ring by Mr. Rubalcava was one of the best feelings ever. Tip for Sophomores: PARTICIPATE in the Junior Ring Ceremony next year! You guys may think that it’s just about receiving a pointless ring that you have to pay money for, but that is not the case. There is a symbol behind the rings; they stand for becoming an upperclass woman/man. Even if you don’t order a ring, you will still receive a silver band! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to connect with your class in a completely different way. January 23, 2015 will be a memory marked in my mind forever. Our entrance song was Miracles by Coldplay. We chose this song because of the message that portrays us Juniors “floating up above the world” once the ring is put onto our finger. Although, the song that really spoke to all of us was Oceans, which was played by Mr. Rubalcava after we received the Eucharist. The reaction of all of the family members and friends to our singing was so beautiful. Our connection hit its strongest point right when the melody of the song made its way to our ears. Overall, the Junior Ring Ceremony was simply amazing and memorable. We are officially upperclass women. We are one step closer to Senior year… Graduation! We are the Class of 2016, and we are ready to set an example as the last all girl class of PMA. This Junior Ring Ceremony was a milestone to our high school careers.

GUEST FEATURE: RELATIONSHIPS IN HIGH SCHOOL by Andrew Frank Enriquez, Class of 2017 (Guest Writer)
Have you ever met a person that had an inexplicable effect on you? For most, high school is a time where people start new friendships and in some cases, relationships. They mean the world to us, you cherish them like your family. You treat that person as a priority. The downside to this attachment is when it all ends. Once it is over, you may feel like the world has ended. Everyone always says, “There’s no one like him/her!” The truth is, yeah there is no one like that person. But truth is, you're in high school and there are so many more people to meet. We are always changing. As YOU are reading this, you're changing! You, nor the other person will ever stay the same. Now I don’t mean to be morbid or sad but good things can come out of these experiences; relationships can be great! It feels good to hear, “I love you” from that one person. It is a great experience to genuinely care for another person, and to receive that care back. You learn a lot about yourself, about the person you are with, what you want out of life and if this is something you want in the future. First loves or great loves are bonds that stay with you. They will always be a part of you. If you are the lucky one to find “the one” in high school, kudos to you. If you are not, you have your whole life ahead of you! If you are going through a breakup, the world is not over, my friend. Again, life is ahead of you and you learned what you want out out of that experience. Will it be weird after a break up? Perhaps for a while. But it’s only weird if you make it weird. Don’t try and talk bad about them and such because what is the point? I know for me, I cared for a person and I still do. Though the relationship ended, the care did not. Be mature and learn to be friends (if it ended in good terms), learn from all of this and keep growing. Welcome to high school relationships. Enjoy them with caution.

“Fuyu Haru: From Winter to Spring”

Winter Formal 2015
by Nicole Biley, Class of 2016 It was the one night where ladies could dress like princesses, and men could dress like knights in shining armors; it was winter formal. This year, ASB and student council held winter formal at the beautiful and elegant Japanese Gardens in Cal State Long Beach. It was a night under the bright and shining stars filled with invigorating music, and good vibes. People either went with their dates or with their friends; everyone had the opportunity to feed koi fish, take silly pictures in the photo booth, and bust a move on the dance floor. “At my first winter formal, I had a great time dancing, feeding fish, and spending time with great friends. I wish the night would never have ended.” Freshman Richard Latimer. DJ Omar Benitez deejayed at our winter formal; the music he played had everyone on the dance floor, dancing the night away. “The venue was amazing! During the evening, when the lights on the dance floor came on, I knew it was time to get my groove on. Feeding the koi fish was a new experience that I thought would never get the chance to. I had never heard of koi fish before. It was definitely a great last winter formal.” Senior/Secretary of ASB Stephanie Bustamante “It was a great atmosphere at winter formal.”

As the second semester of the school year settles in we see new things coming our way. For example, the amazing junior ring ceremony, the beautiful winter formal we had recently and of course, Kobe Liu, one of our first foreign exchange student coming from China! You would think that Kobe would be shy coming into a new school and country, well that is the exact opposite of Kobe. Although he is in the sophomore class, he attended the freshman retreat and quickly made friends with his cool dance moves, what an easy going guy right?

As a PMA community we welcomed him with open arms and here is what he had to say about some of his fellow classmates, “They’re kind, helpful, nice, loud but cool and sometimes funny” and he also mentioned that the teachers are very nice and hard working. Although he does not play any sports right now, he likes sports and is a big fan of the Lakers, especially Kobe Bryant. He may be just sixteen years old with two years left of high school but he already has a plan about his future, he wants to take over his moms company. As you can all see, Kobe is a very brilliant young man and a great addition to the PMA family.

Coach's Corner: Interview with Mr. Santisteven

Chosen to Code

by Kimberly Hernandez, Class of 2016 What is your philosophy of coaching and its relationship to education? Coaching is the ultimate teacher. You have to be able to reach the student athlete both mentally and physically. Not everyone can coach. How do you handle the tryout and cut process? It depends on the situation- some years you have hundreds of kids try out some years you beg the kids to come out. Basically, we’re looking for the best combination for our team- it’s not always the best players. It’s like a puzzle you have to find the pieces to fit. What coaches, teachers or other people have been great influences in your life and why or how? Jesus, John Wooden, Bobby Knight, Vince Lombardi. Most of these are old school coaches- what I grew up with. People worked hard for what they wanted. Some kids today are spoiled. They think they’re entitled to anything and they don’t want to work for anything. How would you promote a positive energy with your team through both positive and negative situations? On the positive you don’t need to promote anything- its there. On the negative side, you just gotta look for the reason why you’re there. And realize there are obstacles. We go around them. What would you try to teach your players besides basketball? How would you do that?

Congratulations to junior Amy Becerra! She was selected for a spot in the 2015 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program at the L.A. site sponsored by AT&T. The selection committee was impressed by the ambition and passion demonstrated in her application and selected her to join 1,139 other outstanding girls nationwide in becoming the Girls Who Code Class of 2015. The Summer Immersion Program will be a life-changing experience. For 7 weeks, she'll be side by side with girls who share her passion for technology. She’ll get exposure to leaders in the industry and learn the computing skills needed to build the products you want to see in the world. - by Mrs. Leifield

Life. Life skills. How to survive disappointments. How to work hard for things you want. How to realize in the real world you don’t always win. Not everyone plays. But it’s what you do after the games that counts. How has coaching affected your life? Well, I’ve been doing it for what- 45 years. It hasn’t affected me it’s been my life. I guess it’s just all the kids you get to meet. I look back and I’ve coached grandparents, their kids, and their kids. I like to see how successful they are when they leave. What is your best memory in coaching? Too many. Seeing people come back years after they’ve been playing and hearing them talk about certain games and practices they remember 10, 20 years later. You realize things people remember that you didn’t think were impactful. What is one thing you would tell incoming freshman?

Spring Musical on May 9, 2015! Get your tickets now! See Ms. Ronquillo or Mrs. Lozano

Get involved, your four years are going to go by fast and stay on top of your studies. Ineligibility sucks. No one wants to be ineligible.

Kanye West released his new shoes: the Yeezy Boosts. The Yeezy Boosts are such a hype because after designing 2 pairs with Nike (Yeezy 1 and Yeezy 2) Kanye decided to now design with Adidas. The reason for Kanye's switch to Adidas was because Nike would not let Kanye design his own shoe styles. After such a long wait shoe lovers purchased the Yeezy Boosts, priced at $350, sadly there was only 9,000 pairs available to be purchased only in New York. And days later the Yeezy Boosts were release online, in a limited number as well. The Yeezy Boosts were such a hit that the day they were released online the Adidas website crashed due to the high demand of the Yeezy Boosts. Online the shoes are being resold for around 3,000 dollars or even better news Adidas announced there will be another release of the so wanted shoes, those who aspire to own the Yeezy Boosts are already camping outside stores to be the first to cop a pair.
