Building a Legacy 2018-2019 Annual Report
A Message from Our President Dear Friends, I am delighted to share with you our 2018-2019 annual report for St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy (PMA). I am truly humbled by the continued generosity and commitment of you who believe in manifesting the values of providing an authentic Catholic education to youth in our communities. Our values ultimately point us to the goal of helping students find their true purpose in life. However, our true purpose is only found in our ability to “recognize our significance” in the world and “seize our opportunities” to make a positive impact before we leave this world. Tragically, I write this reflection while listening to the news of the school shooting that is unfolding at Saugus High School. I couldn’t help but think, how have we as a society come to the point where our children are both the perpetrators and victims of the realities of violence, sin, and evil? If there is one thing I have learned in almost 25 years of serving the cause of Catholic education it is this, most of the suffering experienced in our world is a result of people feeling alone and disconnected. The human story is our sole sense of connectivity. It is our human story that transcends the walls erected by our differences. The reality of God entering our human story is the Gospel which transcends all ideologies. The joy of the Gospel is simply recognizing that God walks with us, speaks to us, breathes with us, works with us daily, through the person of Jesus Christ, made present in the Sacraments, in His word, and in the community of the Church. Jesus Christ is the remedy for our loneliness and we must enthusiastically proclaim this message and respond as St. Peter did, “Lord, to whom shall we go, You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). This is why St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy exists, to bring the Living Word, Jesus Christ, to our students through knowledge and faith so they may in turn proclaim this message to a world darkened by the reality of sin. We began this school year with the launch of our annual theme focused around the word “Fiat” which is a powerful word that means “let it be” or “make it happen.” When it is spoken throughout Scripture and in our lives, remarkable things happen. Through God speaking the words “fiat lux,” the world began with the creation of light, and when Mary said “Fiat,” Jesus came into being and the world was forever changed. With your support remarkable things are happening at PMA! We are in transformative moments in the history of our school and as a result of your “Fiat” to our students, we are witnessing tremendous growth not only in student population but in the quality of our educational services, improved facilities, and the life-changing programs we offer to students and families. As you will see in this year’s report, PMA continues to grow as a place where teenagers have an opportunity to experience the transformative power of learning that is infused with faith and sustained by a caring and generous community. The support of every member of our community is the critical conduit through which we are able to witness and become the presence of Christ to our students and families. In reality we are becoming the remedy for the loneliness experienced in teens today. Considering the times our youth are growing up in, I would say we are literally helping save lives and transforming the world. On behalf of every student we have the opportunity to serve, I extend to you my sincerest gratitude and encourage you to share our story with others who might consider supporting our mission. God Bless You,
Erick Rubalcava PMA President

Warriors… Seizing Opportunities Arianna and Darren hail from local partner schools, St. Raymond’s and St. Dominic Savio respectively. PMA was selected over other high schools based on scholarship offerings, smaller class size, strong school community, and many extracurricular opportunities for growth. They both felt that PMA being a faithbased school environment provides a very positive experience for the students. “Theology classes were ‘not preachy’ but actually very informative and provide ways to keep us morally and ethically in check.” “Religious services such as Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and others were good opportunities to reflect on life, strengthen my faith and focus on making good choices in life.” After four years they both feel they made an excellent choice with PMA. Arianna feels students’ passions are met as there’s an openness that invites students to establish clubs and activities. Darren points out his appreciation for the growth in the school and many improvements to the campus. Together they feel PMA’s size offers a great opportunity to enjoy a close-knit community and the faculty/staff are very eager to support them in their academic and extracurricular pursuits. A further glance in the rearview mirror… Darren’s experience of the quality and talent of the staff was instrumental in helping him achieve his GPA. Arianna feels our student government is provided the latitude to directly influence student activities and enjoyment. Together they enjoyed performing opportunities such as Choir, Improv Club, Theatre, and Filmmaking. Camaraderie with classmates and those from other classes was especially valued.
Both students seized every opportunity to challenge themselves with Honors and AP (Advanced Placement) classes throughout their four years. To their credit, they both have very high GPAs and now anxiously await, what will hopefully be, several college acceptance letters. Arianna is attending USC studying Health Promotion and Disease Prevention with a Pre-Med track. Darren is now at cross-town rival, UCLA with a focus on Pre-Business Econ. He hopes to complement his academic major with his passion for filmmaking as he takes advantage of UCLA’s abundant film resources via clubs and classes.
These two students exemplify our promise of, “Recognize your significance. Seize your opportunities.” They have spent their high school years thoroughly preparing themselves for college and the world that lies ahead.

Helping Kids Dream BIG A
St. Matthias alumna, Ms. Melissa Turcios is proud to return to her alma mater as the Onward Scholars Program Director. Growing up in the Watts area of Los Angeles, from an early age she witnessed the inequities in education for low-resourced communities and attributes her success to a strong Catholic education foundation. Through the commitment to success and support of her family, she was fortunate to be mentored by educators at St. Lawrence of Brindisi School and St. Matthias High School. Ms. Turcios lives out her mission and purpose through her career; lead by the belief that students are capable of success when provided essential guidance, resources, and a community of care. Ms. Turcios was awarded the Posse Foundation Scholarship, and received her B.A. in Spanish Literature and Linguistics with a minor in Education from Dickinson College. She then pursued her passion for mentoring youth as a Language and Culture Ambassador in Madrid, Spain. In addition to teaching secondary students, she served as the College and Career Advisor to candidates for graduation. Ms. Turcios is excited to introduce students to the myriad of opportunities available to them, and assist students in making informed decisions about their college and career path. A Los Angeles native, Ms. Turcios returned home to receive her Master’s in Education from Pepperdine University. At Pepperdine, she helped lead a college access program which addressed the academic and wellness needs of high school foster youth and their families. Most recently, Ms. Turcios served as an Admission Counselor at Loyola Marymount University, where she led diversity recruitment and outreach initiatives. She found fulfillment serving as a counselor for the uniqueness you encounter in every student, and helping students navigate the college-attainment process. Ms. Turcios is passionate about bringing the knowledge she gained in higher education to PMA, to equip our students with the resources, self-awareness, and experience necessary to make strong transitions into higher education. Ms. Turcios is excited to support St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy in cultivating student’s whole-self-development and foster a transformative educational experience that prepares students to lead in our global society. As a first-generation graduate, she is passionate in counseling students in accessing higher education to become engaged community leaders, and encouraging students to DREAM BIG!
Continuing the Family Legacy T
“ he sound of teenage voices, pep rallies and football games, the sacred space of our beautiful chapel, memories flood back as though it were just yesterday,” reflects Renee Salvador, Pius X alumna. This past July Ms. Salvador stepped back onto campus joining the St. Pius X - St. Matthias Academy (PMA) team as the school’s Director of Advancement. Upon graduating in 1988 from what was then Pius X High School, Ms. Salvador (formerly Martinez) continued her education at Mount Saint Mary’s University where she earned her Bachelor's Degree. The first member of her family to graduate college, she is passionate about the transformative advantages that Catholic education provides and grateful for the preparation she received from her alma mater. Today it’s not just Renee who spends her days on the Downey campus, her daughter and son now don the crimson and gray following in mom’s footsteps as proud PMA Warriors. “Madeline is a junior, Daniel is a freshman and we simply couldn’t be happier with the opportunities that surround them and the community that has embraced them,” says Ms. Salvador. Although hallways and classrooms are familiar, and the gym and senior square are like coming home for her, not everything remains the same. With 92% of current students in need of financial aid, over 62% from families whose income is at or below the federal poverty income guidelines, the contrast to life here in the 80’s is evident. What Ms. Salvador knows for sure is that, “these kids need us now more than ever and it’s my turn to give back to a place that has given me so much.” Even as ongoing efforts to fund scholarships continue, miracles abound. Upgrades to the sprawling 17½ acre campus are vast as outside funders, now woven into the very fabric of PMA, are eager to invest in the school and help carry out its mission.
Ms. Salvador concludes with an eager invitation, “Leadership holds the school in steady hands and hearts, PMA’s Advisory Board is strong and dedicated, alumni is reengaging everyday… it’s truly a wonderful time to be a Warrior! If you haven’t been involved in a while, I urge you to come see what all the fuss is about. As an alum I am so proud of the work being done here, come visit and I guarantee that you will be too!”
PMA Athletics on the Rise Our overall athletic program continues to show stellar progress. Over the past year, both the Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer teams earned CIF Playoff berths, as did Boys’ Volleyball. Cross Country has enjoyed several consecutive years of Preliminary and Finals qualification in CIF for our Boys’ and Girls’ teams. Track & Field sent several Warriors to the CIF Prelims and Finals once again. The big news is that, after a 22 year hiatus, our football program has risen quickly in three short years and is being recognized in several publications; most notably the CIF Top Ten where our undefeated Warriors are ranked #1 and earned the #1 seed in the CIF Playoffs in Division 14. A CIF semifinal victory over Vista del Lago propels PMA into the first CIF Football Championship game for the first time in the school’s history against South Torrance High School on November 29th. The spirit of the great athletes and teams of Pius X and St. Matthias is still present. Our current Warriors continue to dedicate themselves to Pride, Virtue, and Purpose while keeping the traditions of Pius X and St. Matthias alive. Go PMA! Go Warriors!
