ST. PAUL’S METHODIST FOUNDATION OF HOUSTON

2021
REPORT
ANNUAL
ESTABLISHED ENDURING&

YOU ARE A BIG REASON WHY ST. PAUL’S is an established and enduring part of the Houston community. Over the years, our roots have burrowed deeper below the surface, ensuring longevity and vitality of ministry on behalf of this city and the people who call it home.

This annual report is filled with names of people who are committed to St. Paul’s lasting presence and pursuit of the common good—of Willing Friends, of members of the new Cornerstone Society, of donors who have honored friends and family with memorial and honorarium gifts, of donors long passed whose generosity continues to support the church, and of the volunteers who serve the Foundation.

The report also includes financial information about the state of the endowment and the various funds that support the church building and facilities, church programs, mission grants, and scholarships.

But the real story of the Foundation’s work in 2021 lies in what has been accomplished through the generosity of donors past and present: the upkeep of this historic building and campus; grants to further spiritual growth; support for 35 non profits assisting persons in our community struggling with homelessness, hunger, grief and other challenges; and scholarships to more than 45 students.

The generosity of each person who has contributed to the St. Paul’s Foundation has resulted in our thanksgiving to God and our thankfulness for each of you who has made this work possible.

tending HEALTH

WHEN A SEED IS FIRST PLANTED, it requires extra tending—someone who is dedicated to caring for it, looking after it, giving it their attention.

For several years now, the seed of a dream has been tended: the dream of having a health clinic on St. Paul’s campus as a way to serve neighbors in need.

Thanks to funds provided by St. Paul’s Methodist Foundation of Houston as well as an exciting partnership with the University of Houston’s College of Nursing, a new health clinic and telemedicine hub opened in St. Paul’s Abraham Station building in September 2021.

The new health clinic is adjacent to the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC), which provides food and clothing assistance for homeless individuals and low-income

families. In a complementary way, the clinic’s primary goal is to provide healthcare to people experiencing homelessness or who are uninsured and cannot otherwise afford to access healthcare.

“We want to continue to provide care to the most vulnerable in our society,” says associate pastor Rev. Andrew Wolfe, who spearheaded the effort to establish a health clinic at St. Paul’s. “It’s a basic right to get quality healthcare.”

“It went from an idea stage to a reality with full funding,” Rev. Wolfe continues. “In the midst of a pandemic, this came together.”

Preparations began back in 2018, when at the Texas Faith and Health Summit, Rev. Wolfe met Shainy Varghese, a professor at UH’s College of Nursing. With much intentionality and planning, a partnership

was eventually formed between St. Paul’s UMC and UH’s College of Nursing. In its first three months of operation (Sept.–Dec. 2021), the clinic helped clients manage diabetes and high blood pressure. St. Paul’s volunteers have assisted with client check-in processes and staff have provided preventive services, such as vision screening, vaccinations, and screening/ referral to mental health services.

By fall of 2022, the clinic plans to expand its hours, begin nursing student clinical rotations, and fully implement telehealth capabilities.

Isn’t it amazing what can happen with a well-tended seed?
The clinic on St. Paul’s campus is open one day a week and, in its first three months of operation, has already served 42 neighbors.

FLOURISHING alongside our neighbors

The Cornerstone Society’s investment in FAM Houston has supported an urban farming enterprise called Shamba Ya Amani (Farm of Peace). Led by refugees and immigrants, the 4-acre farm is providing healthy food for resettled families and cultivating meaningful relationships in our community.

Members of the Willing Friends Society have indicated their intention to support St. Paul’s through their estate plans.
