ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL                            St. Paul’s continues to grow and thrive! During the school year 2018-2019 we successfully taught 282 children and St. Paul’s had for the first time ever, a second section of kindergarten! This of course meant growth in the excellent teaching staff for our school. Our science curriculum received accolades through our Science Olympiad Team’s first place regional win and third place state win. We were also awarded a 10K grant from the Brown Foundation to increase the robotics curriculum by purchasing robotics kits for 5th – 6th grades, adding to the 3rd- 4th grade kits we already have. We also started a new coding program in lower school and were able to triple our upload internet speed because our growth in technology education continues to soar! The Tricentennial of New Orleans was of major focus, affecting the social studies, art, music, sustainability and service learning curriculum. St. Paul’s celebrated with various events scheduled each month of the year. We completed the NOLA Notebook and 5th – 8th grade art students made ceramic tiles of historical faces and places, as well as present day faces important to New Orleans. We had a birthday party for our city, complete with a birthday cake of beignets and a second line. We even made historical New Orleanian scarecrow figures for our annual pumpkin patch. Enhancing the facilities, we moved the computer lab to be part of the library, creating one continuous research space for students. We also completed a FEMA project to replace lighting in the gym building of the school. This was one of 2 remaining FEMA projects left from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Because we have outgrown O’Ferrall Hall for many performances, we also added sound panels to the gym walls, enabling the gym to double as a performance space. After school choices expanded this school year. Besides our busy schedule of volleyball (including the 7th and 8th grade volleyball team winning the Metro League Championship), students enjoyed flag football, basketball, tennis, First Lego League, Book Club, Chess Club, and music lessons. For the first time in many years, our students could sign–up for golf in the spring! Lower school students could sign-up for soccer, Minecraft, and new to this year, STEM classes and Arts and Craft classes. Fundraising was the highest it has been in many years. We increased Pumpkin Patch income by 42% and Gala income was 46% higher than budgeted goal. The focus for much of our fundraising was to replace the deck and oak trees. Our annual fund and all of our fundraisers make so much of our growth possible! Our growth is exciting and far-reaching! Our students continue to benefit academically and socially from this growth and our entire community is enriched! Charleen Schwank

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD WINS 5 YEARS IN A ROW!                            Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division. St. Paul’s competes in Division B which is made up of middle schools, grades 6-9. Each team can consist of a maximum of 15 team members. Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, and parents bond together and work toward a shared goal. Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances. In Elevated Bridge, an engineering whiz and a kid from wood shop can become gold medalists. Similarly, a talented builder and a student with a good science vocabulary can excel in Write It Do It, one of Science Olympiad’s most popular events.

ST. PAUL’S AWARDED STEM GRANT                            St. Paul’s Episcopal School’s STEM program was awarded a $10,000 grant from The Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation to enhance the school’s fourth through sixth grade robotics, engineering and technology program. Our school presently uses LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 Core sets for third and fourth grade which allow students to use LEGOS to build robots and program or code them to do basic functions such as turns and back and forth motions. The grant will allow the purchase of LEGO EV3 Comprehensive Solutions to be used for fifth and sixth grades. The EV3 is a higher level coding system that uses the LEGO blocks. In addition, WeDo 2.0 sets will be purchased. STEM-related opportunities are added to the workforce each day. Our school finds it vital to develop a cutting-edge plan designed to monitor student learning taught through real-world projects in a hands-on, engaging process that will motivate, challenge, and inspire. The program will also help the various learning styles and academic levels of our students by moving them through an actual engineering project in which students rapidly comprehend the relevance of what they are learning. STEM spirit abounds at St. Paul’s whether it is through our STEM night for lower school students or our award-winning Mindstorm Robotics team. Maybe a Minecraft Challenge course, or HTML website design, or CSS language for graphic enhancement, or Kodu game design are for your child. From the youngest student to our eighth graders, St. Paul’s offers STEM activities to challenge and to spark creativity.

ST. PAUL’S STUDIO BAND                            The St. Paul’s Studio Band meets for a full class period during middle school study hall once a week. Band members must commit to giving up numerous recesses for sectional practices, and additional full band performance rehearsals throughout the school year. The Studio Band accepts just about any musical instrument and band members are primarily made up of 5th-8th grade middle school students. Occasionally, by request of the band director, a 4th grade student can participate in this middle school activity. All band members are required to take private lessons outside of school hours on their performing instrument, and a private audition on his or her instrument is also required prior to being admitted in the band. This audition allows the director to see if the child knows the notes on their instrument, can read basic music, and is ready for the commitment. The Studio Band does various performances with the school choir throughout the year. For Christmas, they perform at Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, the Christmas Tree Assembly at school, and the neighborhood Holiday’s on Harrison celebration. In the spring, the band and choir put on a grand dinner theater style performance called the St. Paul’s Jazz Jam.

Our Little Saints Parade is one of our favorite events of the year! Our precious royalty King Taylor and Queen Juliette reigned with grace, poise and enthusiasm.

All Hail, King and Queen of Little Saints Mardi Gras Parade.
