Dear Friends,
At the heart of all our efforts to grow and transform St. Louis Children’s Hospital is our unwavering commitment to do what’s right for kids. Every child deserves to have access to highly specialized, high-quality pediatric care — care that will provide them every opportunity to overcome illness and injury and live life to the fullest. Thanks to supporters like you, we are making great progress toward our goals.
As you will read in this report, we reached many milestones in 2023, including the 30th anniversary of St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation. None of these significant achievements would have been possible without philanthropy. Whichever way you supported us in 2023, please know how grateful we are for your generosity.
Thanks to you, we continue to grow and innovate to ensure children receive the best healthcare possible. We’re so grateful to have donors like you alongside us on this journey. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We hope you enjoy learning more about the progress you’ve made possible over the past year.
Warm Regards,
Trish Lollo

We Do What's Right for Kids
Founded in 1879, St. Louis Children's Hospital is one of the premier children's hospitals in the United States.
In 2023, U.S. News & World Report again named St. Louis Children’s Hospital and its physician partners at Washington University School of Medicine among America’s Best Children’s Hospitals. The publication ranked St. Louis Children’s within the top 12% nationally (No. 23), and we continue to be ranked the top children’s hospital in the St. Louis region.
This is the 15th consecutive year St. Louis Children’s has been ranked among the top 25 children’s hospitals nationwide. St. Louis Children’s is nationally ranked in eight pediatric specialties evaluated by the report — more than any pediatric hospital in the region — exemplifying its extraordinary breadth of expertise.
St. Louis Children’s is one of only 8% of hospitals in the U.S. that have achieved American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition®. The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice and is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.
St. Louis Children’s currently ranks as the eighth largest children’s hospital in the U.S. and serves not just the children of St. Louis, but those from every state and more than 80 countries around the world.

Caring for More Kids Closer to Home
St. Louis Children's continues to expand our reach throughout the St. Louis region and beyond through emergency departments at other BJC HealthCare hospitals, our Healthy Kids Express mobile units, after hours convenient care and specialty care centers. St. Louis Children's recognizes the benefits of branching off the main campus and has plans to continue to add locations in the coming years.
The Power of Giving
Every day, families come to St. Louis Children’s looking for answers and treatments they can’t find anywhere else. Established in 1993, the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation exists to support these patients through necessary programs and services that fall under three pillars — research and discovery, community health improvement and excellence in care. The financial support the Foundation received in 2023 was one of the highest levels in history. We benefited from the generous support of individuals, corporations, foundations, and dedicated organizations and community fundraising groups. No matter the donation size, your support helped us fulfill our mission to do what's right for kids!

Research that Saves Lives
Your gifts to support pediatric research advance the biggest scientific discoveries in child health. Together, we’re able to attract and retain worldclass Washington University investigators and empower them to do what they do best: bring academic research into real-life trials with game-changing results for children.
The Children’s Discovery Institute
Thanks to generous gifts, the Children’s Discovery Institute (CDI), a collaboration between St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the Foundation and Washington University School of Medicine, added two new centers in 2023 to bring the total number to eight. One of only a few centers for pediatric research in the United States, the CDI is unique in its cross-disciplinary, collaborative approach to rigorous science intertwined with worldclass patient care.
The McDonnell Pediatric Cancer Center (Cancer Center) is dedicated to transforming the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancers. The Cancer Center is a partnership between Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, combining the most advanced research — including genetics, cellular function and clinical trials — with an unparalleled ability to translate those research findings into groundbreaking, real-world treatments. A deeper understanding of how cancers emerge and develop, and how those processes can be stopped, will accelerate breakthroughs that give kids and families hope. One in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday.
Elizabeth and James McDonnell III made an extraordinary gift to establish the Cancer Center. The McDonnells have been long-time supporters of research, clinical trials and the development of more precise therapies that will change the future of cancer care for children — both inside these walls and around the world. We are deeply grateful for their generosity and leadership in establishing this transformational center.
The Center for Pediatric Immunology (Center) is revolutionizing patient care and bringing incredible outcomes to children with a wide range of conditions and complex illnesses. As global experts in basic research and translational science, we enable more kids to live long, healthy and fulfilling lives.
The Center will change our approach to identifying and treating inherited disorders early in life — and will draw patients from across the country and around the world.
The Center for Pediatric Immunology is one of only a handful of institutions worldwide to serve as both a research center focused on discovering the genetic bases of diseases and an access point for multidisciplinary care for patients with rare immunebased diseases. The way forward is through innovative, collaborative science. The Center was established with a compassionate gift from an anonymous donor.

Extending Our Reach Beyond the Hospital Walls
Whether they come through the doors at one of our clinical facilities, step aboard our Healthy Kids Express mobile units, visit with us at a community hub or see a behavioral healthcare specialist while at school, St. Louis Children’s is here to provide extraordinary care that meets the needs of every child. Only through your gifts are we able to extend healthcare access beyond our doors and into communities throughout St. Louis.
Removing Barriers to Access Ensures Children Receive Care Closer to Home
In February 2023, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University unveiled the first mobile pediatric diabetes unit in the nation. The program, which is part of the Healthy Kids Express umbrella of services, visits schools throughout the St. Louis region to help students manage diabetes and prevent the disease. All services are free of charge and covered by generous donations to St. Louis Children's Hospital Foundation.
Providing mobile care in their neighborhoods helps to remove barriers to diabetes care and other services that help save their lives. Program staff aim to educate, empower and equip families to feel comfortable navigating their chronic conditions, or for those with pre-diabetes, help prevent them from developing the condition altogether. Students are screened for diabetes complications through blood and urine tests, and checked for retinopathy, an eye condition linked to diabetes that is the leading cause of preventable blindness. The mobile unit team discusses nutrition with children who are at risk of developing diabetes and properly trains students and school nurses on how to inject insulin shots and use insulin pumps and glucose monitoring machines.
St. Louis Children's Hospital is one of the world’s leading treatment and clinical research centers for diabetes, providing comprehensive care for pediatric patients throughout the entire diagnostic and treatment process. As the metro area's largest pediatric diabetes program, the diabetes team sees patients from Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas and Kentucky for treatment. It is also the only pediatric hospital in St. Louis accredited by the American Diabetes Association. Historically, St. Louis Children's Hospital was the first to treat a diabetic child in the United States with insulin.

After many successful years working with youth at Supporting Positive Outcomes with Teens (SPOT) — a freestanding clinic in the city of St. Louis — a formal partnership between Jennings High School and St. Louis Children's was created to deliver the same comprehensive healthcare at a location within a high school. Founded in 2008, the SPOT at Jennings is an innovative behavioral health and medical drop-in center designed to address health, social support and prevention needs. The youth served at Jennings represent a population that would not typically receive the vital care and services they need, yet the SPOT is there to provide much-needed assistance. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the SPOT at Jennings, located in north St. Louis County, has now completed its fifth year of operation.

The most important thing to know about the SPOT is that you can go to them for mental support, physical support and more. It’s also a wonderful environment for students to go and calm down and rejuvenate.”

Care Made Possible by You
Families come to St. Louis Children’s Hospital from around the world because we are committed to providing the extraordinary care that every child deserves. Through your gifts we are able to offer wraparound services that exceed expectations and provide necessary support for these patients and their families every step of the way.
Families Come First
Navigating healthcare can be challenging. That’s why so many families rely on St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s Center for Families, which is 100% funded by the Foundation. The Center for Families (the Center) provides collaborative, compassionate and supportive family resources to help families navigate their healthcare experience. Recognizing that families are coming in more vulnerable, stressed and facing more urgent situations than ever, the Center is open 24/7, 365 days a year to assist.
The Center’s refrigerator and freezer are stocked with nutritious, grab-and-go snacks and drinks. Baskets of chips, cookies, cereal, granola bars, macaroni and cheese and more sit on the counter. The Center is known for having the best coffee, tea and hot chocolate! It would not be a “home away from home” without the occasional celebratory treat. Best of all, families are simply told to help themselves when they come in.
Colin, 19
We continue to improve the patient and family experience as evidenced by the continued record-level volumes of families who come to the Center for resources. In 2023, this included an increased number of outpatient families bringing their medically complex children for all-day appointments, making the drive from hours away to receive specialized care, including therapy services, radiology, outpatient procedures and more.
St. Louis Children's Champion
Frequently, people come to the Center for Families because their child has been transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital and they did not pack any clothes, or they had no idea that they would be staying for weeks instead of the overnight visit they prepared for. More than 1,100 parents were provided clothing in emergency situations. The Center for Families also provides items such as laundry detergent, fabric softener sheets, deodorant, soap, feminine hygiene products, combs, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hand lotion and hair dryers. We have phone chargers, iPads, a business center and a notary. There is a quiet room that families utilize to decompress from the stressors of being bedside.
In the Center, medical librarians and pediatric nurses fulfill requests for trusted medical information for parents, patients and the public. Families can also find information about local and national support groups for medical conditions and health information resources including educational books, videos and
Excellence in Care — 2023 by the Numbers
iPads to borrow to view online resources at the bedside. The Center also teaches lifesaving infant CPR and provides Anytime CPR kits for home practice that include a CPR manikin, practice DVD with guides and written instructions.
The Center also continues to provide computer access, printing, faxing and copying services for patients and their families, who must juggle work and connections to insurance providers while also focusing on their child’s care. Many parents and caregivers must continue to work while their child is a patient because their financial or employment situation does not allow for them to completely focus on their child.
Our Center’s services continue to respond and grow in order to meet families where they are. And, with an increasing demand for education, information and assistance, our Center for Families remains an essential service at our hospital.

A Legacy of Philanthropy Lives on
Planning for the future demonstrates a commitment to furthering our mission.
Sally and Don Morton were well known in St. Louis, where they lived for 48 years. While they continued to show devotion to their family throughout the years, they also showed devotion to their community. Sally volunteered at their church, local school and several organizations. Don focused his volunteer work on local sporting and aviation organizations and St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Don was very humble yet very proud of his volunteer work. He saw it as an opportunity, and no job was too big or too small for him to take on. Tiffany Schroeder says her dad felt valued through his interactions with the patients and their families and it brought him so much joy.
Sally and Don passed away two weeks apart in the summer of 2023 at the ages of 86 and 89. They were married for 59 years and left behind a legacy of philanthropic dedication they built together. Tiffany and Todd remember their parents always choosing to financially support the causes they were involved in,
and with a gift in their trust, they were able to continue that support even beyond their lifetimes. “St. Louis Children's Hospital was very important to my dad,” Todd Morton says. “My sister and I are thankful for his time there and we were happy to facilitate his support of St. Louis Children's through their trust.”
Don and Sally participated in a complimentary and confidential values-based estate planning service offered through the Foundation’s partnership with Thompson & Associates, which helps clients navigate the complexities of estate planning, working with individuals to identify personal values and develop strategies to ensure their estate plans reflect those and align with their overall financial and family objectives.
“I definitely believe they instilled a sense of philanthropy in me,” Tiffany says. “It is very ingrained in my sense of self that you share your good fortune and help others. I don't feel that it was ever forced on me, it was just what you did!”

Parent’s Perspective
“I love this hospital. This place is where I want her to get her treatment. Donorfunded programs like the garden, the playroom and Child Life are her favorite things. Every time, even when we just come to pick up a prescription, she's like, 'Take me to the garden. Take me to the playroom.' I have to tell her, 'Bella, we can't go in there. We're not patients right now.' She just loves it up there. To all the donors, thank you. We appreciate you. You make it a lot easier for the kids.”

Through Kaylee's Eyes
“To all the donors, thank you! You have no idea the impact that you make. You make the difference between somebody merely surviving or really living life to the fullest. Without donor-funded programs like art therapy, music therapy and child life, I would merely have existed. I wouldn't have enjoyed anything about the hospital. The hospital would have been such a traumatic experience for me that I wouldn't be able to name one good thing about it, but you bring life to the hospital. You are the reason that we can thrive."

Parent’s Perspective
“My message to the donors — thank you for your support. Your donations help families like us who have reaped the benefits of services like MRIs in the Joe Buck Imaging Center. Those MRIs are lifesaving. And without that, we wouldn't be where Rylee is at now.
Without the donations that support the neuro rehab program, we wouldn't have a thriving 18-year-old kid who's walking and talking again. So thank you for thinking of not just us, but all the other families that are going through this with their children. Because of those services, these families can have their kids back."

Through Selah's Eyes
“Many of the programs and services that I utilized would not be possible without your gifts. Donors like you helped me return home to my family and allowed me to celebrate more birthdays than I ever could have imagined. My story is just one of thousands that would not have been possible without your help. Thank you for all you have done for St. Louis Children’s Hospital."

Cheers to 30 years! From left, St. Louis Children's Hospital Foundation Development Board Chair Ryan Davis, Friends Board Chair Madeline Akins and Foundation Board Chair Charles Windsor raised a glass to celebrate the boards’ work to serve the health needs of children in our community for three decades. Board alumni came together on October 19, 2023, at CITYPARK to honor the past, present and future work of the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation.

St. Louis. This means no waiting in line for rides! Complimentary dinner will be served in the Six Flags World’s Fair Picnic Grove and drinks and music on the parent patio. In addition, guests can feast on unlimited complimentary popcorn, soda, pretzels, lemonade, funnel cakes and ice cream. All arcade and video games are discounted and merchandise in select shops will be 40% off.

Each year Play Date has a new theme accompanied by exciting interactive games and activities, followed by a seated dinner, program and fantastic after-party with live music.
