ANewly-Called Letter from Pastor Jon Haug Director of Congregational Life | Associate Pastor Greetings! I am Pastor Jon Haug, and my family and I are excited to meet you soon. My wife, Kara, and I dreamed of returning to California where we fell in love. We just assumed we would be retired and driving a Winnebago. But God had other plans for us… A few months ago, a seminary colleague of mine, Pastor Katy Grinberg, contacted me about an opening at an excellent church in Sacramento. In my initial conversations with Pastor Frank and Pastor Leslie, we got along easily, naturally. I began to wonder if God was calling me away from the familiarity of Michigan to a new place far away. As the call process continued, God kept opening doors until, on May 31, you, the good people of St. John’s called me as your next Director of Congregational Life. God is so good! Soon the Haug Family will be in Sacramento, and I am looking forward to working with your excellent pastors, Frank and Leslie, and the rest of the staff as well. When we visited in April, we witnessed a sung baptism, which made us even more excited about being part of your beautiful worship of God. I look

forward to meeting each of you and to working with you to enhance your -- soon “our” -- community’s self-care as we Live God’s Love in the World together. Kara and I are overwhelmed by the work we must do to sell our home and get our family settled, but we are leaning into our trust in the Lord. Please pray for us. We are leaving behind a lot and ask that you pray particularly for a good ending to our ministry in Michigan, that we may find a great place to live in Sacramento, and that our daughter, a rising first grader, will land a place in a wonderful elementary school. In addition we hope that Kara will find an opportunity to pursue her professional passion: sexuality education.

Before we know it the whirlwind transition from Michigan to California will be complete, and we will begin to call you family and friends as we grow together in Christ’s grace. We long for new connections as we live and learn about what God is up to in Sacramento. How unexpected and amazing is God? We’ll continue to find out together.
