W

ellness in the workplace has become a common denominator in occupational health and safety in the 21st century. As employers increasingly recognize the value of a healthy workforce, managers and leaders focus on the many factors that contribute to our well-being. So much more than simply the absence of disease, our health is also a testament to our social, emotional and mental well-being – and each of these dimensions requires employer support.

Volunteerism in the workplace has become a key way to promote wellness for employees at each organizational level. Such contributions to society have been well-documented (Entrepreneur, 2011) to affect employee performance and productivity, thus translating to greater satisfaction in the workplace.

In turn, employee volunteer programs have become an integral part of any recruitment and retention strategy. In

fact, in a recent study by Deloitte and Touche (2007), 62 per cent of Generation Y respondents claimed to prefer to give their time and talents to work at companies which offer them volunteer opportunities.

In addition to supporting individual

community allows employees to become a cohesive team in which their personal values and beliefs are acknowledged, thereby increasing their sense of loyalty and job satisfaction.

These factors combine to create healthier,

employees, corporate-volunteer programs also go a long way in demonstrating social responsibility, which enhances any company profile. Belonging to an organization that cares about its

happier employees, which is wellknown to counteract absenteeism. The Saskatchewan Public Service Commission, in a pilot project involving staff from four government departments, discovered a return on investment of $1.82 for every dollar spent on employee wellness programs when considering the financial impact of reduced absenteeism (Vance, C. 1991). In turn, less absenteeism improves productivity, which further supports the notion of creating a positive community– minded atmosphere.

At College of the North Atlantic, the Office of Alumni and Advancement and the Division of Learner Services are teaming up to launch their inaugural Ambassador Program. Designed to support both recruitment activities and learner outcomes, opportunities now exist for college learners, employees, retirees and corporate partners to become involved in this exciting volunteer initiative.

Chair’s Message taking risks written the first cheque and I certainly should not have written the second one.

I still lose money from time-to-time, but I am more diligent today and am getting better at picking winners.

Years later, I look back and think what a shame something like the Newfoundland and Labrador Angel Network (NLAN) didn’t exist then. All that experience and intelligence in one room to give a hand up to start-up and growing businesses would have been a godsend to a Newfoundland and Labrador over the past few decades.

Risk is inherent in everything we do.

W

hether it’s crossing the street or choosing a location for your business, we face inevitable risks every day. Perhaps our timing is off and we don’t quite reach the sidewalk or today’s trendy shopping area is tomorrow’s empty storefront. Even doing nothing has risk.

Anything is possible and none of us are really safe in every situation or decision.

Many of us learned in the dying days of 2008, that risk is more than a possibility when it comes to investments.

We woke up one morning in early 2009 to see pensions decimated, plans ruined and businesses failed. Investors learned that a superficial understanding of complex investment products and blind faith in the market can be dangerous.

But if you’re at all successful in business, then you’ve probably made more than one mistake in your day. If you’re really successful in business you’ve probably made a whole lot of mistakes.

I bet you learned from them too.

I think it’s OK to fail. I learned it from my mentors and I teach it to my kids. I also learned it from my mistakes, but I think I learned a lot more from those mistakes than how to gracefully fall on my face.

In one of my first investments, I wrote a cheque to a manufacturing company.

The cash disappeared quickly, so I wrote another cheque. That was also quickly eaten up. That’s when I bailed out. In hindsight, I know I never should have

In an interesting side-note, NLAN, which just celebrated its fifth anniversary, has put $1 million into local start-ups, and has 30 people looking to help businesses succeed.

Right now the Atlantic Canadian provinces are considering recommendations of a recent report on business development.

Those recommendations include creating a privately-run venture capital firm that would focus on “high-growth” sectors like clean technology, life sciences and information technology.

A suggested $50-million pot, with more than $25 million coming from private business, could foster a tremendous number of successful businesses. When combined with contributions from Nova Scotia’s Innovacorp, NLAN and other entities, we could reverse the trend of declining venture capital funding across the country – a trend that forces successful April 2011

startups to sell earlier than planned.

According to a recent article by Stephen Hurwitz, a partner at Choate Hall & Stewart LLP, it’s exactly that underfunding that’s “hollowing out” the Canadian technology sector and forcing a complete relocation to the United States. It’s suggested in the article that Canada’s extensive research and development tax credits have “in effect, (become) a subsidy to U.S. businesses that acquire these promising Canadian companies cheaply. “… (Further), much needed and sought after US capital that could richly fund that industry and those companies is being blocked by Canada’s cross-border tax laws.”

Right now is a great time to invest at home. Markets are rebounding, and there’s big work to be done in this province.

Too many of us send our hard-earned savings to central Canada to be invested in companies outside our province. Only minute amounts are invested locally. Even assuming we get decent investment returns over the long-term, it will still be a hollow victory if we end up in a golden rocking chair wondering why there is not enough business to keep our children here.

And if there’s anyone I’d like to pass along some investment advice to, it would be government.

I’d tell our governments to create an environment where development is encouraged and innovation can thrive, to create the industries that will support us when the oil is gone. And use the oil revenues to get rid of the debt that will inevitably drag us down otherwise.

Life coaching had its beginnings in the sports arena, but after being introduced into the business community in the 1980s, it has become one of the fastest growing professions in the world. Research supports significant return on investment for companies offering life coaching programs, be that to owners, managers or employees.

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google when asked for business advice said, “Everyone needs a coach. Every famous athlete has a coach … someone who watches them and gives them perspective.”

The term “life coaching” is generally used to describe the following; career coaching, personal coaching, workplace coaching and business coaching. Coaches are not consultants, and while they provide the life coaching process to lead you to successfully achieve your goals, they may not be content experts. You provide the expertise in your area and your coach keeps you focused and motivated in the implementation of your plan.

Life and work create challenges on a daily basis. Life can interfere with work and

vice-versa. Productivity at work depends on levels of focus and attention. If you golf, you know that if you take your eye of that little white ball just for a second, you won’t achieve the result you planned. How do you ensure employees are focused? Do you have their full attention? Is their eye on the ball?

Your business depends on you, your energy, your creativity, your personal and professional strengths, but it also depends on your employees. The human resource factor is paramount, not only to the success of your existing business, but to the ability to generate and capitalize on future opportunities. Where is your energy focused?

eople are an integral part of every business and how people and relationships are managed can make the difference between success and failure.

One of the most difficult dynamics at work is conflict.

Whenever we work with other people, conflict is likely to occur. Much of this conflict is creative and helps us be innovative problem solvers. However, some conflict is destructive and gets in the way of business. While conflicts are natural, they have the potential of undermining entire organizations, if people don’t have the skills to manage them.

Some surveys have shown that managers and executives regularly spend more than a quarter of their time dealing with interpersonal conflict. Consider that, in environments with more conflict, their resolution may take up more than 50 per cent of a manager’s time. Whether or not these numbers are accurate, it is clear that knowing how to manage interpersonal relationships is a critical skill for managers and employees.

Most organizations recognize the need to address extreme forms of conflict like harassment and bullying, many managers don’t have the skills to effectively deal with everyday conflict. In many cases, a manager doesn’t see a need to get involved if two employees can’t get along. While it may not be a manager’s responsibility to make employees like each other, it is critical to be aware of the impact of unresolved conflict.

Conflict often isn’t overt. People may appear to get along; they may be polite to each other, but underneath there could be unresolved issues that are eating away at the organization. These subtle types of conflicts are often more difficult to deal with.

Finding that elephant in the room is one of the most time-consuming tasks when working with organizations.

Feature professional development It’s not just for you - it’s for your business too

P

ersonal and professional development isn’t just for you, though we often think of ourselves first.

We anticipate having fun learning something different. We consider ways of improving the chance of getting a promotion.

But what we often don’t factor in, is the benefit to those around us. It’s a serendipitous benefit, or something we should be doing anyway, but personal and professional development makes our employers look and become that much better. That can’t be bad for our employers.

For more than 30 years, the Gardiner Centre (formerly the Bill Morrissey Centre for Management Development) has grown significantly because of the demand for personal and professional development needs among supervisors, managers and executives. We have seen programming grow from two to three seminars per quarter to two to three seminars each day – and that growth is due to the benefits clients receive from the experience.

The theme “personal and professional development, health and wellness” has always been at the forefront with the Gardiner Centre. Organizations can succeed only when their employees do. Employees can succeed only when provided with the environment for success.

The analogy has been used time and again, and it holds true of personal and professional development: the whole is only as good or as strong as the sum of its parts. If you develop the people who make up your company, you will develop the company as a whole. But this can be expected to work only if your company is organized to capitalize on that devel10

opment. How often do you encourage employees to attend professional development, but not know what they are attending? What does the employee hope to gain from the experience or what does your company hope to achieve as a result?

When that person returns to the office, do you have a plan for helping them apply the lessons in the workplace? Are you ready for the new ideas and energy that will be brought back to the organization? If you haven’t planned for it, you’re missing out on the greatest benefit.

Learning without the opportunity to apply the lessons can be dangerous. Practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes permanent. It is only when one practices doing things perfectly that the application become perfect. This has been known for centuries from the advent of apprenticeship programs. It was recognized that it was only through development and application that improvement can be expected. It has been further expanded upon in professions where continuous learning is expected and even required. Accountants, engineers, physicians and many other professions require their members to participate in training or other formal personal and professional development activities to maintain professional status. They aren’t wrong in this requirement. It comes with the commitment to being a professional.

We have heard it said that some employers refuse to spend money training people who will just leave them for another employer. In the words of William Vanderbilt, “The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave, is not training them and having them stay.”

opulation projections issued by the City of St. John’s are cause for oncern because population and business growth lag far behind public spending.

Population growth has been marginal over the past 25 years in the city, and even high growth projections for the next 20 years are relatively modest. In conjunction with business occupancy numbers being almost completely static for 10 years, the tax base has barely budged. Meanwhile, the city budget has grown from $105 million to $224 million.

In 2001, the population of St. John’s was 99,180 and analysis by the provincial government suggests it currently stands at approximately 102,580. In the city’s 2000 annual report, it notes that business occupancies stand at 3,609; at the end of 2009, that number stood at 3,535. (During 2010, the city began to track occupancies in a different manner, altering the ability to compare numbers year-over-year at present).

Belt-tightening could mean combating costly urban sprawl and unsustainable budget increases. It is possible that small corrective actions taken now could mean that large problems are avoided in the future. These problems could include even

larger tax hikes than have been passed to residents and businesses in the past number of years and reductions in public services and/or jobs. Perhaps the most troubling potential problem is that good future opportunities for the city and its residents and businesses could be passed up because of unsustainable spending today.

The city has an existing system to facilitate small corrective actions; now is the time to bring budget growth back in line with the natural growth of the population and business community. Businesses and residents will pay $174 million in taxes in 2011; in 2000, those taxes were just under $82 million.

And he’s willing to sweat if that means exceeding them.

o-owner of the successful local personal training club Definitions, Wahl and his business partner Mike O’Neil recently launched a new business pre-screening industrial workers for early signs of injury. They recently expanded into the Gulf of Mexico, where they’ve signed contracts with several major oil companies. By night he’s getting his doctorate in medicine.

Oh, and he’s also been named the Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE)2011 Student Entrepreneur Champion for this province, as well as regionally for Atlantic Canada. He’ll go on to the national competition later this year.

“I have a very understanding wife,” Wahl says of his lack of work-life balance at present. “They always say you don’t work a day in your life if you do something you love. My job is pretty rewarding. I get to go to a group of people and affect their lives. Give them advice that can save their life.”

Eight years ago, Wahl sold everything he owned and moved into O’Neil’s basement – where he slept on an air mattress – while they renovated the former Duckworth Street location of Definitions.

“Between the two of us we got our money together, but we couldn’t afford a contractor, or we couldn’t afford many contractors, so I started helping out while we renovated the entire building,” he says, adding that the company’s most recent location – on Stavanger Drive was also repurposed for the company’s use.

Further, the company has a focus on occupational health and safety – before an injury.

Wahl says the occupational therapist for the company, Laura Watson, was a perfect fit because she was frustrated helping people after the fact, without being permitted to comment on their lifestyle choices that could be hindering their improved performance.

He says the company is well aware of the liability that comes with not hiring workers based on physical ability, which is why it’s become successful so quickly.

“Every person that goes in there, they get a report on what’s going on, but we are giving them techniques and tools and tips in health and wellness and muscular-skeletal, you name it, to improve Mike Wahl their efficiencies,” he says. “We’re not taking workers and saying ‘Well, good see you later.’ We’re saying ‘You’re not that great, but you can do better.’ And telling continued on next page...

In recent years, the whole business model for Definitions has moved toward occupational health services, including ergonomics, job-specific analysis, return to work cases and the like.

But what makes Wahl proud of his work is that by giving the knowledge to a client,

he may also influence the way whole families look at nutrition and exercise.

“I take it seriously. People come to me and ask me questions that are the most private questions you can ask someone and my job is to give them advice.”

When he finishes his thesis – on reactivating the body and reversing the damages of lifestyle choices – Wahl says it may be time for he and his wife Leona, a geologist with Nalcor, to try a new challenge – kids.

New name in town There’s a new name in Labrador’s mining sector.

New Millennium Capital Corp. has announced an agreement with India’s Tata Steel to develop Labrador’s LabMag and KéMag iron ore deposits.

The two companies have agreed to work on a feasibility study, and have laid the groundwork for the development of the site should it be viable.

The Taconite Project consists of two magnetite iron ore deposits on the emerging Millennium Iron Range, which stretches 210 kilometres from western Labrador through eastern Quebec. The LabMag deposit is located in the Labrador portion of the range and the KéMag deposit is located in the Quebec portion. Together, the two deposits hold more than nine billion tonnes of reserves and resources that will potentially produce 22 million tonnes per year of concentrate, with a potential mine life of over 100 years.

Diversified funds Partners in the Hebron project are investing in the future workforce by creating a new scholarship program that will be geared towards engineering, geoscience, environmental science, chemistry Business News

and trades and technology students and split between students attending Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic.

The Hebron Project Diversity Scholarship Fund, which will total $1.5 million, will help female students, Aboriginal students, students with disabilities and other students that are of visible minorities.

The Hebron Project co-venturers - ExxonMobil Canada Properties, Chevron Canada, Suncor Energy Inc., Statoil Canada and Nalcor Energy – will also make a separate one-time contribution of $80,000, to two areas of research at Memorial University.

One will fund the study of the factors of fostering diversity in the science and engineering fields and how to retain those workers. The other will support math, science or engineering research led by a faculty member from among the four identified groups.

Employers of distinction

Two of our members have been named Employers of Distinction.

The Iron Ore Company Canada (IOC) and Fit for Work were presented with the awards at a ceremony held at the Sheraton Hotel and attended by nearly 200 business leaders.

IOC won in the large employer category, based on their contribution to the community, their plan to grow from within, and a commitment to health and safety.

Fit For Work was named Employer of Distinction in the small employer category, specifically for its human resources practices around continuous education, flexible work arrangements and engagement of staff.

Evergreen Recycling – another local company – was also recognized for their achievements through a Path of Distinction Award.

Membership member news Innovative funding A public-private partnership between the province and oil industry will result in a significant boost to the to offshore engineering research in Newfoundland and Labrador, according to Memorial University.

Suncor Energy and the Research & Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador (RDC) have signed on to a $6.8-million investment to expand the S.J. Carew Building which currently houses the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

The 1,090-square-metre extension – to be called the Suncor Energy Offshore Research and Development Centre – will create significant research space and a new synergy of collaboration among faculty, graduate students and industry partners.

The dedicated space will be used for research and industry collaboration related to the ocean technology and offshore petroleum sectors and is expected to help grow Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science R&D by $6-$8 million per year over the next five years and will involve approximately 100 full-time equivalent researchers.Â

Nalcor backs out of Parson’s Pond project

Nalcor Energy has announced that it won’t be drilling a third well at its Parson’s Pond onshore exploration project. “The results of our drilling, testing and seismic analysis have provided good quality data that has advanced our understanding of this West Coast basin,� said Jim Keating, vice-president, Nalcor Energy Oil and Gas. “What we’ve gathered through this program is one of the most extensive datasets that exists as a result of drilling to depths never reached in this area before.�

The project’s first two wells encountered gas shows while drilling. Analysis of the data from those wells mean the third location, which is located directly between the first two wells, will likely result in similar results and the test rig will be disassembled while analysis is done.

Keating said the company is committed to continuing research in the area.

There was some political upheaval around the decision, including the official opposition comparing the project to gambling with taxpayers’ money.

New look for HNL

Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador has gotten a facelift.

It was announced at the recent HNL conference that the brand has been updated. A new website has been launched, along with a new logo and a wider focus on the tourism industry as a whole.

The new logo – of a clothesline with quilts depicting different aspects of the province’s tourism industry – evokes the idea of fresh air and open spaces, according to the tourism advocacy board.

Newfoundland and Labrador is still flying high on the success of the oil and gas industry, but what about when the last barrel is sold?

That’s a question Aberdeen, Scotland is facing, according to a recent news article from Reuters, called “Scottish city prepares for life beyond oil.”Aberdeen spent nearly 50 years known as “the Kuwait of the West,” and about 40 per cent of its economy was based on offshore oil.

Now, disassembling the oil industry is an industry on its own.

There are lessons to be learned from the Scottish experience, including not waiting until the oil is gone to get into other industries – like renewable energy.

The St. John’s Board of Trade is currently working on research looking at the end of oil and diversity in this province. If you have any information or questions about either topic, we’d like to hear from you.

Canadians are catching on to credit card and debit card scams, according to a new survey.

The Visa Canada survey, shows that a relatively small number of people are doing engaging in risky behaviours when it comes to using their credit and debit cards.

“Smart” workforce investment Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries, Bluedrop Performance Learning and the provincial government have come together to create the opportunity for a smarter workforce in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The province will spend $1.8 million on the project called SmartForce NL, a program that will help all workers in the province.

The program will use social media and technology to provide human resources training to small and medium sized businesses here, hopefully helping business here compete with employers globally.

It will include access to thousands of free online courses and the ability to manage corporate and personal learning, for employees and employers.

Bluedrop Performance Learning created CoursePark, the online social learning network, that will be used for the programs.

Membership industry news When those polled said they didn’t use credit cards to make online payments, 38 per cent said it was because they didn’t feel it was secure.

Along with the release of the results, Visa Canada announced the launch of a new website, www.visasecuritysense.ca, which provides information to help people protect themselves from fraud.

According to the Financial Post article, Capital One Canada is working with CanadaHelps.org to raise awareness about charity fraud. “… They found that Canadians are generous in giving to charity but 65% worry about fraudulent charities, up from 51% in a similar survey released late in 2009,” the article says.

And in yet another Financial Post article about fraud, former CEO of Quellos Group Jeffrey Greenstein – who was convicted of tax charges in September – has started to serve his sentence, which includes talking to 46 business ethics students about fraud.

“If we don’t teach and preach ethics, any human can be tempted,” the professor of the class was cited as saying.

According to the Posts’ article, a recent study by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners shows that globally organizations lose five per cent of annual revenues

to fraud and that frauds committed by owners and higher ups are more costly than those committed at lower levels of the organization. They also take longer to detect.

Passing grade The province has again reached a new high grade in its most recent credit rating upgrade.

Standard & Poor’s Rating Services announced recently the province’s credit rating has increased from A to A+ - the highest rating the province has ever gotten.

Credit ratings are key factors when it comes to borrowing power and attracting investment. Provincial net debt has been reduced to $8.2 billion in 2009-10 from a high of nearly $12 billion in 2004-05.

The province is also experiencing strong economic expansion, with GDP growth of more than five per cent and an all time high employment rate.

Approximately 80 per cent of total provincial revenues are being generated from provincial sources.
