Expanding the Frank C. Love Cancer Institute For us, people are what matter most.

Their stories. How we can play a role in their lives and make a difference in their treatment are what drive everything we do. They are why we have launched a $4.5 million campaign to double the size and make improvements to the Frank C. Love Cancer Institute, so we can better serve families across Oklahoma. And it’s all only possible with support from people like you.

Cancer has touched most of our lives. The number of cancer patients seeking our care continually rises - a 48% increase in just the last five

years! Our patients tell us they choose Saints for our compassionate care and because we treat them like family. We are honored they rank us in the top 6% in the nation for patient satisfaction.

By offering exceptional care and comfort during a difficult time, we hope to offer families a home away from home. To help us reach this goal we have received two tremendous matching gifts from the Chickasaw Nation and P.B. Odom III family. Their gifts will double donations and bring us closer to expanding the Cancer Institute.

Building a Legacy People like Peggy and her late husband Sam, who came to SSM Health St. Anthony for care after his bladder cancer diagnosis, are building a legacy and helping us continue to provide for others. For Peggy and her family, St. Anthony isn’t a place of sadness. It is a place that offered comfort and hope throughout their journey.

In 2009, Sam’s struggle began with bladder problems. Soon after, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. After surgeries and treatment, Sam seemed to be recovering. By 2013, the cancer was back, leading doctors to remove his bladder. Next came a tumor on his sciatic nerve, followed by cancer in his shoulder. Later on, problems arose with his kidneys and heart. After fighting a long battle, Sam passed away in August 2016.

Because of his care at SSM Health St. Anthony, Sam lived seven years longer than his original prognosis. While challenging, those years brought Sam joyful moments, like attending his granddaughter’s wedding. Peggy credits the doctors and staff for the extra time they shared.

“People ask me, ‘Why would you go back there?’, and I tell them, ‘Because Saints isn’t the reason he is gone. He was a fighter, and we came to a place that helped him fight.’”

Peggy knows the value of having a place to feel at home when you can’t be at your own.

“If you believe in something with all your heart, you will want to donate and make it better for the next generation. My heart is here. This is the last place I was with him, and the memories are wonderful.”

REMEMBERING SAM When Sam originally began treatment at Saints, his prognosis was less than a year. Through Saints’ care, Sam lived 7 years longer. Peggy makes sure to honor Sam’s memory and the people who helped him fight his fight every year.

The Chickasaw Nation will match any donation to the Cancer Campaign dollar-for-dollar. First time making a donation? The P.B. Odom III family will also make a matching gift to the Foundation for all new donors.

Dedication of S.K. & Mira Bhatia Heart & Vascular Unit In January, we were humbled and honored to announce an exciting renovation made possible by a gift from former Saints cardiologist Dr. S.K. Bhatia.

Dr. Bhatia was a beloved member of the hospital staff until his passing in 2017.

“During his 43 years at St. Anthony, Dr. Bhatia gave our organization a gift of his time and service through his leadership and problem solving,” said Joe Hodges, SSM Health Care of Oklahoma Regional President. “His generosity did not end with his passing, as his gift to the Saints Heart & Vascular Institute will continue his vision of providing exceptional, compassionate heart care for our patients in a new, state-of the-art environment.”

Dr. Bhatia’s generous one million dollar gift provided for a full renovation of the fourth floor, south patient wing, dedicated as the new S. K. & Mira Bhatia Heart & Vascular Unit. The wing features upgraded finishes in the patient rooms and bathrooms to create an uplifting, light filled space conducive to healing. It is also more welcoming to family, as three patient suites provide ample room for family and guests to visit and spend the night.

NICU Grand Opening

Last November, SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital opened its new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the third floor of the Midtown campus. The $1.4 million NICU is a nurturing environment designed to care for ill and premature newborn infants, with a capacity for 15 neonatal

babies. The level II NICU will allow the babies to eat, sleep and grow safely and comfortably. Donations to the Foundation contributed towards the family-centered care furnishings for the new unit.

The SSM Health name was added to all Oklahoma ministries this year. Uniting under one name gives us an opportunity to show that our Mission, our physicians and staff, and our services are all aligned. It also demonstrates our commitment to honoring our heritage and carrying on the legacy of our founding Sisters.

Operating as SSM Health St. Anthony, we will continue to build upon our rich history. From where we were, to where we’re going, our legacy is part of our drive. We are part of something bigger—a calling to continue the work of the original Sisters who gave of themselves for others.
