MESSAGE FROM ROBERT

A Dear Friends,

few months after I was named Head of St. Andrew’s — but long before I moved to Maryland and began working here — I received a letter from a St. Andrew’s parent. Inside the envelope was a newspaper clipping about that year’s disappointing record for the boys’ basketball team and a terse note asking me how I intended to fix the problem. Not my happiest memory from my transition to St. Andrew’s!

Competitive student-athletes find excellent challenges and opportunities at St. Andrew’s, and school spirit around athletics is on the rise.

The mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is to know and inspire each child in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service.

Fast forward 12 years to last January, when an alumnus I hadn’t seen in some time asked me about the same basketball team this past season: “Are we really ranked in the top five in Montgomery County? How did that happen?” Good question. In many areas, our athletics program has improved significantly in recent years. Competitive student-athletes find excellent challenges and opportunities at St. Andrew’s, and school spirit around athletics is on the rise.

St. Andrew’s will never be an “athletic factory.” That’s not only because we routinely play against larger schools in highly competitive leagues. The central yet balanced role of athletics comes from our culture and mission. Our best players (and their families) routinely tell me that their top priorities — like the school’s — are personal growth and academic preparation for college. Our coaching staff, despite their competitive

fire and aspirations for their players, have the same priorities. At St. Andrew’s, our exceptional faculty and supportive environment matter more than win-loss records.

So from where has the recent improvement in our athletic program come? First, we’re doing a better job of developing our younger students’ skills and passions for athletics. Our Middle School has grown in recent years and the level of play for those teams has increased. Key to that progress was the inclusion of sixth-grade students on our Middle School teams beginning five years ago. By the time our veteran student-athletes reach Upper School, they have mastered the fundamentals, are dedicated to their teams’ success, and have bonded with our coaching staff — essential factors for good junior varsity and varsity programs. In the process, we have largely eliminated the issue of students transferring from St. Andrew’s to a peer school for athletic reasons.

Our best players (and their families) routinely tell me that their top priorities — like the school’s — are personal growth and academic preparation for college.

Several years ago the school decided to complement its highly dedicated full-time coaching staff (comprised primarily of classroom teachers) with select “outside” varsity coaches who would connect with our students and use their networks and

reputations to attract more student-athletes to St. Andrew’s. This decision recognized the ever-increasing expectations our full-time faculty have for their own teaching, and the time those expectations require. Varsity-level coaching has also become far more demanding in terms of time, skill, and professional development. Our focus will always be to have the most expert, growth-minded faculty and staff teaching our students, whether that teaching happens in a lab, on a stage, or on a court. Our best “outside” coaches have become top candidates when fulltime positions arise, validating this intentional, relationship-centered approach to staffing.

We will continue to focus on areas of our sports program that are ripe for improvement, always insisting that athletics complement our supportive, student-centered culture rather than undermining it. We are excited about how our growing enrollment and planned facilities’ expansion will strengthen St. Andrew’s in every pillar: academics, arts, athletics, and community life.

In closing, thank you for supporting your children and St. Andrew’s so strongly. As you will see from the numbers and the stories on the following pages, 2013-14 was an extraordinarily successful year for St. Andrew’s, and 2014-15 promises to be even better. Thank you making our school’s growth and distinctive strengths possible.

SCHOOL UPDATES PARTNERSHIP

St. Andrew’s Announces Research Partnership with Harvard Graduate School of Education Faculty

O

n November 4, 2013, St. Andrew’s proudly announced a research partnership with faculty of Harvard Graduate School of Education with a letter to the community. The partnership, between the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning and, among others, Kurt Fischer, considered the father of educational neuroscience, brought St. Andrew’s into the International Research Schools Network. St. Andrew’s became just the fourth school in the nation and sixth in the world to join the IRSN. As part of the partnership, St. Andrew’s named five teachers and six students as CTTL Research Fellows. Phyllis Robinson, Dr. Ian Kelleher, Kristin Cuddihy, Amy Helms ’03 and Christine Lewis traveled to Harvard in November to meet with Harvard professors and begin to brainstorm on what research question they would tackle this year. In January, those professors came to St. Andrew’s to speak to the community and also meet with the student fellows.

Brian Bies ’14, Michael McDonnell-Diaz ’15, Danny Knauss ’15, Gabi Gedo ’15, Zoe Gray ’15 and Bobby Radecki ’15 also traveled to Harvard with the teacher fellows in May to attend a symposium held by the IRSN. They were the only high school students invited to the symposium.

This fall, Harvard came back with initial results of their study and it shows a direct relationship between student happiness, motivation, and academic success. This confirms our long held belief that happy learners are better learners. Look for more on this relationship and the study’s results in the coming months.

ST. ANDREW’S LAUNCHES LION-CUB PROGRAM

E

veryone needs a friend. Someone to look up to, someone who can make them feel comfortable in a strange and intimidating place. With that in mind, the Lion-Cub Program was launched in the fall of 2013.

Aimed at providing our Lower School students with mentors

and familiar faces on the Postoak Campus, while giving our Upper School students a leadership opportunity and connection to the school’s youngest students, the program connects kindergarten students with freshmen that they will get to know over the next four years, culminating with their third grade year when they arrive as a student on the Postoak Campus.

In its initial year, sophomores and first graders were paired up as were juniors with second and third graders. The pairs visit early

in the year, walk together in the Walkathon, sit together at allschool chapels, and even make art projects for each other.

TENTH GRADE BEGINS GREAT WORKS PROJECT

MACDONALD HALL UNDERGOES RENOVATION

W

hat makes a novel “great?” Tenth graders were challenged to answer this central question in their English classes by their teachers Susheela Robinson and Evan Brooke this year. “The Great Works Project” held in early May in MacDonald Hall was a celebration of what the students concluded qualified as a great work based on their reading of their chosen novels.

The evening was a culmination of a year’s worth of work

for the students, highlighted by the display of each student’s poster on their chosen book as well as presentations by the five finalists who, like all their classmates, were vying to have their selected book become a part of the tenth grade English curriculum for the 2014-2015 school year.

In the end, Richard Royle and Bobby Radecki were chosen the winners by a panel of judges for their respective books Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

his past spring and summer, MacDonald Hall experienced a complete renovation, creating a high-quality theater and musical performance space. The project, fully funded thanks to generous donors, is part of a long-term

campaign to upgrade campus facilities.

Work began during spring break when the lighting grid was raised by more then two feet to create better sight lines. At the same time, new acoustic tiles were installed throughout the ceiling and entire hall was painted. In the summer, new retractable theater-style seats replaced the old bleachers, creating a more inviting and comfortable space. A new floor and new stage door panels were added to give the room a warmer and more modern feel. Lastly, the quality of the sound and lighting systems were greatly upgraded, benefiting our performers and audiences alike.

very year, Lower and Intermediate School students gather in the courtyard on

the Potomac Village Campus to bless the animals. Parents bring pets from home, students bring stuffed animals or pictures of pets, and after much singing and ukulele playing, the school chaplains bless the gathered animals.

The 2014 Blessing of the Animals was held on Oct. 1.

MEMUNA MCSHANE ’15 FEATURED ON ESPN

I

n August and September of 2013, a film crew from ESPN repeatedly visited the halls and fields of St. Andrew’s. The reason for their visit

was a member of the Class of 2015 – Memuna McShane.

Born in Sierra Leone, Memuna became an international symbol of peace and hope at the age of 2 when she lost

her right arm during the country’s civial war. Her journey was highlighted on ESPN’s award-winning newsmagazine E:60 with the feature first airing on October 15. To watch

HOMESTAY

ST. ANDREW’S EXPANDS INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM

T

here are more than 525 students at St. Andrew’s, so you could be forgiven for not noticing a trend among 1% of the student body. Nonetheless, there is a trend developing. As

of the start of the 2014-2015 school year, there are five international students at St. Andrew’s, and three of those are members of the Homestay program. The Homestay students live with members of the St. Andrew’s community, such as Cheryl and John Butz, parents of sophomore J.C. Butz. They are currently housing Eric Xue, Eric Xue, a freshman from China.

“Having Eric in our home has been a fascinating experience for our family,” Cheryl Butz said. “We have learned about each others’ cultures and about ourselves. The boys have developed a great relationship. They study together and play together. We teach each other all kinds of things every day. Eric is an outstanding young man. We are happy to have him be a part of our family!”

ON THE HORIZON

“What’s Next?” – Head of School Robert Kosasky

A

few weeks ago an alumni parent asked me: “So, Robert, what’s next?” She had come by campus to celebrate the renovated MacDonald Hall, and to experience the comfortable seating and improved aesthetics first hand.

When her children were at St. Andrew’s, they had celebrated the expansion of the school to grades preschool-12 and the installation of our beautiful synthetic turf fields. She had cheered on the creation and dramatic growth of our Center

for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL), and took pride in telling friends that St. Andrew’s had the best faculty and professional development program in Washington.

“What’s next?” at St. Andrew’s is always determined by what’s best for our students and their learning. With a first-rate faculty, a happy and supportive culture that leads to extraordinary outcomes, and great classrooms and fields and now a great auditorium and theater, what do our students still lack?

Space. Space for our bas-

ketball and volleyball teams to practice and compete each day without waiting for gym time. Space for our dance and wrestling programs to flourish. Space for our students and staff to work out and develop lifetime habits of fitness. Space for students to socialize and learn in new ways. Space to conduct educational research and to train our next generation of master teachers.

Last year our Board of Trustees kicked off the Students at the Center Campaign, which will fund the construction of a new Student Center along the back of campus.

“What’s next?” at St. Andrew’s is always determined by what’s best for our students and their learning.

This beautiful new space will double our gymnasium space, create state-of-the-art fitness and athletic training facilities, and provide a beautiful new dance and wrestling studio.

We will be ready to put the first shovel in the ground when funding allows. I

n 1998, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School moved into a new campus in Potomac.

But that wasn’t the only major move by the school that year. That same year, St. Andrew’s boys’ athletics moved from the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference (PVAC) to the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC). Two years later, in the fall of 2000, girls’ athletics moved from the PVAC to the Independent School League (ISL).

In just over two decades in the PVAC, the boys’ and girls’ teams had won more than 65 league titles. In the 15 and 13 years since the boys and girls, respectively, transitioned to their new conferences, they have combined for 13 MAC and ISL championships. Despite this dip, there is no doubt that athletics at St. Andrew’s is thriving and as strong as it has ever been.

In 2008, former Athletic Director Tim Rose reflected on the change in leagues, saying “The competition in the MAC and ISL is tougher than in the PVAC, but it has been good for the program,

and we are still able to win some championships. We don’t dominate like we used to, but it’s one of the best things St. Andrew’s has done.”

Rose’s view is one that is shared by the current Athletics Director, Al Hightower, who has been at the head of the program since 2001.

“I think the quality and seriousness of athletics at the school has increased ten fold,” Hightower said. “Our teams have realized that in order to be competitive, coaches and athletes have to be willing to commit to working harder.

The results have been solid. St. Andrew’s has consistently placed a respectable amount of all-league athletes on the various teams. The golf team won an unprecedented four straight titles between 2007 and 2010. We have also established more of a presence outside of the league by winning eleven boys and girls state championships and defeating teams from the much bigger Catholic league and the IAC. Since we joined the MAC and ISL, we have become more competitive not only in sports, but more attractive to students

who are interested in our leagues’ peer schools.”

Head of School Robert Kosasky agrees with Hightower’s assessment, pointing less to the quality of the competition and more to the devotion of those involved.

“We have strengthened our athletic pillar primarily through the dedication of our players and coaches,” Kosasky said. “Our teams invest enormous time in practice and training, and despite competing regularly against larger schools, believe that they can win. I’m a huge believer in developing students’ positive mindset in athletics, just like we do in our classrooms. Our coaches keep getting better as well, with excellent veteran leaders working closer with high-impact recent additions to our coaching staff.”

At the heart of the school’s ability to compete against often larger schools has been the commitment of a group of dedicated teacher-coaches, many of whom have been coaching at St. Andrew’s for over a decade, whose passion for teaching and coaching has

helped student-athletes to perform at their best.

The value of the teacher-coach model, according to Kosasky, “is knowing and inspiring students in all areas of school life. The great history teacher may inspire a strong student to give cross country or soccer a try, or inspire one of his players to put forth more effort in class.”

Both Hightower and girls’ soccer coach Glenn Whitman concur with Kosasky’s perspective.

“I think it is a tremendous asset because teachers get to see students in their environment and students can build a better relationship with a coach

that they have access to during the day,” Hightower said.

“Connection and modeling,” said Whitman, who is also the school’s Dean of Studies and Director of The Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning.

“Student-athletes see me in both an academic, scholarly role as their history teacher, as well as an athletic role that should be a reminder of their dual roles as well.”

In an era that has seen the increasing “professionalization” of coaching at the independent school level, with more and more schools looking to hire outside coaches to work with student-athletes, St. Andrew’s is in a growing minority of

schools that have held onto the teachercoach prototype. Its adherence to a model that grew out of the English boarding school tradition of the 19th century underscores that St. Andrew’s is firmly committed to educating the whole student by recognizing that the athletic arena is an extension of the classroom.

In doing so, St. Andrew’s expects and cultivates in its teachers a respect for students as complex and unique individuals who bring to the table more than just a one-dimensional aspect of being simply a student, an athlete, or an artist.

While this independent school “triple threat” — the teacher who is also a coach and an advisor — may be a thing of the past at many schools, more than 80% of the St. Andrew’s faculty ably handle such multiple responsibilities on a daily basis.

When a student is able to get to know their teachers in a variety of settings, be it the classroom, the soccer field, or the stage, it shows them that individuals need not be defined solely by one thing, but rather are encouraged to try new things and explore their own interests.

The experience of learning in such an atmosphere allows the student to grow in innumerable ways and also understand that being well-rounded in life opens an individual up to new and positive experiences.

According to the National Association of Independent Schools, “The school’s athletic program should be an essential part of the education of students, fostering the development of character, life skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork.” It goes on to state, “Coaching is teaching: Coaches are, foremost, teachers. In this spirit, coaches have a strong collegial relationship with other educators and

contribute to the school’s understanding of the whole child.”

The school has good reason to prize the longevity at which its coaches have been at the helm of their respective sports. Whitman, who has coached at St. Andrew’s for 11 years, is the norm among faculty at the school. He has consistently produced outstanding girls’ soccer teams and led the program to an ISL banner in 2001. From his perspective, “having a consistent coach is integral to growing any program, so I see that as one benefit. Being both a teacher and coach also allows me to keep tabs on the girls throughout the school day as well.”

Science department head Kris Mohlman, who has been the boys’ tennis coach for 11 years and coached the girls team in the past as well for a number of years, is also convinced that his “program has benefited from consistency in philosophy and coaching style which has led to consistency in results. I also think I bring a lot of passion for the sport and that transfers to my players.” That passion has produced boys’ teams that have never lost to rival Georgetown Day School and his girls’ varsity squad winning the ISL A tournament in 2005.

English teacher Morgan Evans has literally built the wrestling program during his decade long tenure. “The team has increased in size since I came here,” Evans said. “One of my strengths is showing students who might not have seen themselves as wrestlers how amazing this sport can be.”

Evans rightfully takes tremendous pride in the individual accomplishments of his wrestlers. “Daniel Parker placed in the National Prep tournament, so he stands out in terms of achievement,”

Evans said. “Will Carr was the wrestler who worked the hardest in the off-season and truly loved the sport the most.

mind, because he was really the only wrestler at St. Andrew’s when I first got here. Coaching him to a MAC championship seems like a long time ago now, but for a brand new head coach, it was helpful to have a role model and team leader like Nat.” The 13-year coaching partnership between history teacher Alex Haight and math instructor Gregg Ponitch has created, they believe, a climate of “consistency, familiarity, and stability” for the boys’ soccer program while winning a MAC title in 2003. Eleven years later, they have a team that has been ranked in The Washington Post Top Ten this fall and has a legitimate shot at winning the MAC title again.

Likewise English teacher Mike Davila and history instructor Dave Brandt have won a MAC title and six small school state championships coaching the boys’ cross country squad together since 2002.

Visual Arts Instructor Gary Wyatt is the dean of St. Andrew’s athletics, having coached cross country and track at the school beginning in 1980. He has partnered with his sister Verna Van Wert for many years to create a winning tradition for the girls’ cross country team. In their time together, they have won the 2005 ISL title not to mention five small school state titles.

Beyond the integral role that longstanding teachers have played as coaches in the success of St. Andrew’s sports, Kosasky credits the “strengthening of the Middle School sports program and the inclusion of sixth grade in our interscholastic sports program five years ago as a key decision” to the evolution of a competitive athletic program at the high school level.

“The installation of our superb turf fields in 2008 was also critical,” he says.

“Our athletes enjoy the best playing surfaces in our leagues, and almost never miss a practice or home game due to weather. The fields have also helped draw more students to St. Andrew’s.”

Hightower attributes the increasing competitiveness of St. Andrew’s sports program to the fact that “having to be competitive in one of the best leagues around has caused St. Andrew’s to step up its game.” He also believes “having veteran coaches has paid off when competing in the league. The hiring of new coaches who are innovative and willing to reach out to the community has also been a huge factor in creating successful

teams at the school.”

“The hiring of excellent head and assistant varsity coaches has been transformative,” Kosasky said. “These coaches have drawn many great student-athletes, and great kids, to St. Andrew’s, and they have raised the level of play on their teams and on their Middle School and JV ‘feeder’ teams as well. These coaches are such great people that we have been eager to hire them full-time as openings occur, so that they can learn from and contribute to their colleagues and the school culture even more deeply.”

A case in point has been the hiring of Kevin Jones, the boys’ basketball coach since 2011. Jones inherited a

considerable rebuilding project at St. Andrew’s when he took the job as head coach. The Lions finished with a 6-18 record during the 2010-2011 season and won just one league game in the MAC that season. Since Jones took over the program in 2011, the team has been on an upward trajectory improving with each season. During the 2013-2014 season, Jones led the Lions to a team a school-best 18-win season.

“I just think it’s good to see that we’re able to compete at this level,” said Jones, who now works at the school as the Assistant Director of Admissions and who has used his significant connections within the greater community

to draw talented players to the school.

“When I took this job three years ago, we couldn’t beat Montgomery County Public Schools. Now, being able to beat public schools in this county and being ranked in The Washington Post just shows how our program has grown over time. That’s all I want to see as a coach — growth and improvement. And we’re definitely improving and growing as a program.”

Jones’ recent success on the court is what Hightower believes is key to the future enhancement of St. Andrew’s continuing to achieve in the arena of athletics. “I think we need to continue to have innovative coaches who can reach out to a broader community,” Hightower said. “The challenge is how to do that while doing the other things within the school. Attracting student-athletes to the

school is crucial. There are so many great private and public schools in this area and they all want the scholar-athlete.”

An additional challenge for the St. Andrew’s athletics program includes the increasing specialization in sports whereby athletes choose to focus on attaining success in one sport at the expense of playing multiples sports. As Whitman astutely notes, “It is a shame that we have lost the multi-sport athlete, girls who play three sports or at least two.”

“The level of league play has increased dramatically in the last decade for many reasons,” Kosasky said. “Our girls and boys cross country teams routinely win small-state championships while battling to finish in top half of their divisions.

Our boys basketball team was ranked in top five among all private and public Maryland schools last season, and currently our boys soccer team is ranked in the top ten in greater Washington, yet both teams will need to improve to win a league banner.”

Dane Smith, a former Division I lacrosse player and coach at Robert Morris University was recently hired to coach the boys’ lacrosse team. “The major challenge is building an athletic identity for St. Andrew’s,” Smith said.

“St. Andrew’s will always carry a great academic reputation, but the every-day student does not identify the school with athletics.”

“I think we must continually try to spotlight our athletics at all cost,” he explains. “In doing this, I believe enrollment will increase and that in itself is the other challenge we as coaches face. The number of able bodies we have to play our sports is limited, and this limits development as seen in teams not having JV

Toward that end, Kosasky, the Advancement Office, and the Board of Trustees has committed themselves to increasing the importance of athletics at St. Andrew’s while not sacrificing the central mission of the school: educating students in an inclusive environment.

“I hope to see that improvement as we attract and develop more great players and coaches, but not at the expense of the school’s balanced, supportive culture,” Kosasky explains. “We won’t ever become a school where teaching and learning or our joyful environment are less important than win-loss records.”

school faces, in Kosasky’s estimation, is addressing the expansion and improvement of its indoor athletic facilities. “We have begun a major capital campaign to fund and build a new Student Center, which will include a new gymnasium, a complete renovation of our current gymnasium, a beautiful fitness center, and state-of-the-art locker rooms and athletic training space,” Kosasky said. “The Student Center will also include space for dance, wrestling, community gatherings, and the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning. This stunning new building will transform the Postoak Campus and our students’ experience here, and will draw even more great students to this wonderful school.”

For coaches like Whitman and Evans, the school’s leadership’s commitment to improving athletics is a move in the right direction as the skills and values learned through sport benefit the individual throughout their life.

“It has been great to be part of the enhanced emphasis we place on athletics, not only as we pursue winning seasons and winning ISL banners but also because of the things sports teach athletes that cannot be acquired anywhere else,” Whitman said. “Most of our athletes’ soccer careers will end upon graduation, but learning how to train for an upcoming season, commit to a team, push through adversity, these are skills that crossover into all facets of life and will be called upon again and again by each player I have coached regardless of their abilities as a soccer player.”

Evans could not agree more. “We have dedicated coaches and passionate athletes at St. Andrew’s,” Evans said. “I think we are headed in the right direction in terms

of a “critical mass” of athletes that take their respective sports seriously, even in the offseason. This will create a culture of hard work and a mindset of constant improvement which can only benefit the school and, more importantly, the athletes as they move forward in their lives.”

Message from the Board Chair

A

s we return to campus this Fall, you will notice many changes both in our physical facilities and in our leadership structure, particularly on the Postoak campus. In MacDonald Hall, the hard, uncomfortable metal bleachers have been replaced with beautiful, state of the art stadium seating for which students, faculty and parents alike are extremely grateful.

The lights, sound and flooring have been upgraded or replaced so we now have a fabulous new performing and gathering space for our campus community. This project was made possible by the generosity of our St. Andrew’s families, past and present, and was accomplished in a few short months. It is a testament to the power of a collective community effort to meet and fulfill the needs of our school, and every one in our community benefits from this generosity.

And with the start of a new school year, it is an opportune time to reflect on the meaningful traditions we share as a St. Andrew’s community. Opening Chapel at National Cathedral, Alumni Weekend, the bag pipes leading the procession into St. Andrew’s night, and of course graduation for our seniors at National Cathedral in the spring, are all traditions that are embraced community wide. And since we are a relatively young school, we have the opportunity to create new traditions for our community, such as the Lion-Cub program, which connects our Upper School students with students from the Lower School campus. Watching many of our “Cubs” see and greet their “Lions” during opening chapel was heartwarming indeed and speaks to increased cross-campus connections we continue to develop and build upon.

Yet there are times when some traditions do come to an end.

For the first time in many years, John Holden did not deliver his Fresh Start speech. After 28 years at St. Andrew’s, John retired, beginning his own fresh start. Yet John’s presence is still felt throughout St. Andrews. During opening assembly I overhead more than one person mention John and his fresh start speech.

One of the great pleasures of serving on the St. Andrew’s Board is seeing how our entire community works together to bring our distinctive mission and values to life. Our engaged community dedicates countless hours volunteering which support and enrich our programs on both campuses. The financial generosity and philanthropic spirit of our community

have placed St. Andrew’s in a position of exceptional fiscal strength. And from this position, we have embarked on a campaign to bring the physical facilities on par with the excellent level of teaching and programs offered at St. Andrew’s.

The recently launched Students at the Center Campaign will provide much needed improvements to the Postoak campus and allow St. Andrew’s to maintain its competitive edge in the increasingly crowded field of independent schools. The new Student Center will include a new gymnasium for athletics and school-wide community events; dance, wrestling and multipurpose space; a state of the art fitness center for students, faculty and staff; locker rooms; and a renovation of the current gym to include air conditioning and the Holden Court gym floor. The Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL) will have dedicated office and meeting space to allow for continued growth of its programs and offerings. And the hallmark of the new facility will be the Commons. This space between the two gyms will become the heartbeat of the campus and provide our students with a space to gather, to create and to compete. The natural light-infused design will offer display areas for student art work, meeting rooms for student-run clubs and an open area gathering space. Our effort is off to an excellent start as we have quietly raised $6 million for this landmark effort.

In the coming year we will be sharing many details about the Students at the Center Campaign and offering opportunities for you to become involved in this truly transformative time in St. Andrew’s history.

Until then, I would like to thank all of you for your commitment and your support to St. Andrew’s. Our community appreciates your generous support and volunteer efforts each and every day. And most importantly, I would like to thank our teachers for their dedication and devotion to their craft, of which our children are the beneficiaries.

Welcome New Trustees

ach June, St. Andrew’s Board of Trustees

welcomes new members.

Seven new Board members join the ranks this year.

Al Antenzana is the parent of a pair of St. Andrew’s Lower School students. With a second grader, Ashley, and a preschooler, Anthony, he is familiar with all aspects of life on the Potomac Village campus. As a successful lawyer, he is familiar with building a practice from the ground up, something he has done locally. A graduate of Bishop McNamara High School, he received a B.A. in Business Management as well as his law degree from University of Maryland. In 2001, after several years working in area firms, he opened his own practice. Within a year, his future wife, Rebecca, joined the practice. Currently, Antezana & Antezana, which specializes in litigation, personal injury, and workers’ compensation, has offices in Gaithersburg, Wheaton and Takoma Park.

Peter Antoci joins the St. Andrew’s Board in an ex-officio capacity, having been appointed as the Bishop’s Representative. An associate rector at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., he has a long career as an educator both prior to, and since becoming ordained. He earned a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University, a Ph.D. from Catholic University and he attended Virginia Theological Seminary. From 1990 to 1998 he worked at Jubilee Housing as director of development and then as executive director.

From 1998 to 2003 he worked at The Shriver Center, UMBC, as the director of the Peaceworker Program. In 2001, he was ordained and he served as the Episcopal chaplain at the University of Maryland.

He also published a book, Reflections on the Spirituality of Campus Ministry: A Play in Four Acts.

Oliver T. Carr, III returns to the Board after one year away. The President and Chief Executive Officer of Carr Properties, a $1.5 billion asset real estate investment trust focused on the ownership, acquisition and development of high-quality office properties throughout the greater Washington, D.C., area. In 1994, he co-founded Carr Capital Corporation, a privately held real estate investment company. Later, he formed Columbia Equity Trust and took it public through an initial public offering.

He served as the Chairman and CEO of Columbia Equity Trust (NYSE:COE) before leaving to start Carr Properties. Carr is a graduate of Trinity College where he earned a B.A. in Urban Studies, with a concentration in Economics. He later received a Master’s from MIT in Real Estate Development. His son, Chris, is a 2012 graduate of St. Andrew’s and currently attends Bowdoin College, while his other son, Andy, is a current member of the Class of 2018.

Rudy Casasola is a parent of two St. Andrew’s students, Johnny (Class of 2017) and Thomas (Class of 2020).

He is also the father of a St. Andrew’s graduate, Alex (Class of 2014). Rudy earned a BA in history from University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from University of Maryland. He has professional experience in wholesale distribution, industrial food services and print media circulation but the past 20 years has been spent in the IT industry. Since 1993, he has worked at Presidio where he has been a part of every acquisition during his time there. He has held every position in the company’s Sales organization and is now President of the company’s South office, which includes all of Presidio’s Federal business.

He oversees sales, service, marketing, finance and human resources.

David Dekker joins the St. Andrew’s Board in an exofficio capacity as the School’s Counsel. A graduate of Denison University with a law degree from Cornell University, he is a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. At the firm, he focuses on civil litigation and dispute resolution.

He has handled cases on both the plaintiff and defense side and his experience includes actions at the trial and appellate levels involving complex insurance coverage disputes, construction claims, real property, suretyship and other commercial matters. In 2010, Legal 500 named him one of the eight leading Real Estate and Construction practitioners in the country. In 2013, The Washington Post named him one of Washington, D.C.’s Best Lawyers. Last year, BTI named him one of the 40 “most valuable” practitioners to corporate counsel worldwide, in any practice area. His son, Tommy, is a member of the Class of 2018.

Eva Kanupke joins the St. Andrew’s Board in an ex-officio capacity as the President of the St. Andrew’s Parents Association (SAPA).

A native of Philadelphia, she graduated from Emory University with a degree in Art History. She holds a Master’s from George Washington University in Museum Studies.

At the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, she served as an Exhibit Project Manager for the Museum’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation.

She then joined the Museum’s Office of the Capital Campaign where she worked with highprofile donors like Polo Ralph.

Currently, she is the Director of a single-family office, serving as a liaison between family members and advisors and attorneys. She holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is the mother of a St. Andrew’s student, Adrian, a second grader.

Blair Watters becomes a St. Andrew’s trustee and brings with her prior experience serving on a Board. She is on George Washington’s Medical Faculty Associates Board where she has served for two years and she also is the Chairwoman of the George Washington Hospital Women’s Healthcare Board. A graduate of Westmont College, she is currently a Partner at The Madison Group. She handles issues related to telecom, banking, commerce, trade and tax. Prior to The Madison Group she was a Democratic Leadership Aide for the House Democratic Caucus, serving under Chairman (now Senator) Bob Menendez as Director of Special Projects. She managed policy taskforces related to tax, budget, crime military, jobs and economy. She is the mother of two daughters, one of which, Marin, is a member of St. Andrew’s Class of 2024.

Leadership Gift Clubs:

uring the 2013-2014 school year, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School raised nearly $800,000 toward annual giving. This level of generosity is yet another example of our community’s commitment to support the Lion’s Fund, which plays a vital role in ensuring that we provide our students with everything they need, from the classroom to the athletic field or art studio.

The Lion’s Fund allows us to attract and retain excellent faculty, provide financial aid to deserving students and to continue to offer great academic and athletic programs to our students from preschool through Grade 12.

n the Spring of 2008, Pierre Omidyar ’84 made two challenges —one to the Board of Trustees and one to Alumni. Pierre challenged the Board to donate an additional $1 million beyond the $2 million they had already given to the Touchstone Endowment campaign, which he would match with a $1 million gift. Christina Goldbaum ’10 Drawn to Africa

B

eing curious and compassionate.

Learning about the greater world.

Getting out of one’s comfort zone. Serving people other than oneself.

Such qualities are at the heart of a St. Andrew’s education and ones that Christina Goldbaum ’10 fully embraced during her time at St. Andrew’s, fostered at Tufts University, and continues to build upon as she begins a career in photojournalism in Africa.

A 2014 graduate of Tufts with a BA in Political Science, Goldbaum spent three months this past summer working for The Cape Times

as a reporter in Cape Town, South Africa. She will follow that with a year working in northern Kenya through a fellowship she received from Princeton University’s “Princeton in Africa” program. The fellowship will allow her to produce videos, photo essays and written articles on pastoral communities in Northern Kenya for The BOMA Project, a U.S. nonprofit and Kenyan NGO “with a proven track record, measurable results and a transformative approach to alleviating poverty and building resiliency in the drylands of Africa.”

Goldbaum, who entered St. Andrew’s in 7th grade, credits the school for instilling in her “the idea of service,” something for which she dove into with gusto. In her time at St. Andrew’s, she helped lead HEART, a community service club, worked at the Latino Student Fund outside of school, volunteered at the Genocide Intervention and helped promote the message of Invisible Children, an organization founded to bring awareness to the nefarious activities of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Central Africa, and

its leader, Joseph Kony.

The Cum Laude graduate also found time to be active in student government, played lacrosse, acted as a tour guide, participated in Model United Nations, and served on the Student Advisory Board. t her graduation this past May, she won the Saint Award as well as the Senior Paper Award for her research on Genocide Awareness and Prevention.

She is also thankful for the excellent education she received at St. Andrew’s.

As she notes, “The teachers made a real impact on me.

Before she had even entered Tufts as a freshman, Goldbaum began exploring Africa in a major way during her high school years inspired by both “curiosity and moral outrage,” having traveled to South Africa with former Performing Arts teacher Roy Barber not to mention journeying

on her own to Tanzania and Rwanda.

Having always been attracted to what she described as sometimes “uncomfortable” places as well as having grown tired of what she calls the often “singular narrative,” and a false one at that in her opinion, on Africa as presented in the media — “poor people who have no agency and who rely on others to help them,” Goldbaum found through her travels in Africa that many Africans were actually working very hard to help themselves as well as their fellow countrymen.

Goldbaum’s experiences in Africa drew her to Tufts’ International Relations program for college as it had many international students

and great opportunities to go abroad. During her four years at the university, she quickly involved herself in the work of international development. From the beginning of her freshman year through her senior year, Goldbaum worked as a Program Director for Building Understanding Through International Learning and Development (BUILD), a Tufts student led, collaborative rural development organization serving communities in Guatemala and Nicaragua.

While initially interested in international development work in Central America, a course in narrative and documentary practice during her junior year brought Goldbaum back to her love of Africa. Inspired by her professor Gary Knight, a noted photojournalist, Goldbaum began to lose interest to some degree with development work, noting that “it leaves one questioning what can

really be done. In some ways, it can beat the idealism out of you and make you quite pessimistic.”

Discouraged, but still desiring to connect with people to bring about positive change, Goldbaum’s yearlong participation in the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice taught her “to shape global issues into narrative and compelling multimedia stories by training her through extended field work to identify and tell non-fiction narratives that can act as vehicles to explain larger, complex issues to a general audience.”

At her graduation this past May, Goldbaum’s commitment to service was deservedly honored as she not only graduated Magna Cum Laude, but also received recognition from Pi Sigma Alpha (National Political Science Honors Society) and won the Anne Borghesani Memorial Prize for international research, the Presidential Award for Citizenship for outstanding work in community service, the Marshall Hochhauser Prize for altruism, and the Alumni Association Senior Award for outstanding leadership and extraordinary service to Tufts and the greater community.

Goldbaum has nothing but praise for the outstanding education she received at Tufts. She especially credits “the exemplary Institute for Global Leadership for valuing the importance of taking what

one learns in the classroom setting and applying it to the real world and vice versa.”

She states, “I was able to get a tremendous practical education from my work and travel abroad that informed the theory I learned in the classroom.”

The question for someone who has experienced so much at a relatively young age is “What’s next?” To that Goldbaum replies, “I don’t know. I have had the opportunity to work in a lot of different sectors — social entrepreneurship, small business, health, poverty reduction, and women’s rights. On a fundamental basis, I am greatly interested in human rights.”

For the immediate future, Goldbaum looks at her next year working in South Africa and Kenya as a way enhancing her skills as a journalist and “rooting myself in Kenya for the foreseeable future.”

“I love working in Kenya and have a lot of good friends there,” she states. “I’ve seen the resilience they demonstrate in the face of tremendously difficult circumstances, and feel a responsibility to show that agency to a Western audience. My goal is to illuminate the complexity and nuances of this region to the rest of the world, in the hopes of broadening the current narrative.”

E

ach year I am truly excited about the start of the school year because every person, each one of us, gets a fresh start. In a school we all leave for the summer and return having changed from the person we were before we left in June.

To grow as a person and for the fresh start to work for you, you have to set personal goals. I suggest committing yourself to two or three measurable goals, meaning you can really tell if you are attaining each one, especially choosing a goal to work at something you are not so good at doing. You only become a stronger and better student and person by working on what you are the poorest at doing. It is hard work to take what you most likely don’t like to do, and work relentlessly and consistently, to persevere at improving that aspect of your personality or skill as a successful student.

As many of you have heard me say before, but it never changes, we each spend the 24 hours that are available to us each day in four fundamental ways.

Connecting with others, establishing deep and meaningful relationships with family, friends, peers and colleagues.

Maintaining our health: eat, exercise and sleep.

Following a passion: something to look forward to that we love to do and that you will bring with you to college.

Doing our job: being a student or teacher or an administrator running a school.

What will your goals be to improve at what you are the weakest?

A relationship goal might be: 1. I will really listen to my friends 2. I will work at being empathetic, truly trying to feel what others are feeling.

3. I will be honest.

4. I will take responsibility for my actions.

5. I will allow my friends to change and be different.

6. I will be myself and drop all the roles that cover up the real me. I don’t feel great when I am not the real me.

A health goal might be: 1. I will eat breakfast each day.

2. I will eat three pieces of fruit every day.

3. I will drink only one soda per day.

4. I will exercise vigorously at least three times a week for 30 minutes.

5. I will sleep 8 to 10 hours each night. Sleep is what allows our brain to function at peek efficiency. Getting sleep helps us to remember things, an memory is what learning is all about.

In your job as a student, a goal might be: 1. I will get to school on time.

2. I will work on my writing skills and take advantage to rewrite papers when given the chance.

3. I will persist and persevere until a project is completed in excellent fashion.

4. I will do each homework assignment thoroughly and remember to bring it to school.

5. I will keep my laptop charged.

6. I will go for history reading help twice a week.

7. I will take a risk to try one new thing at school this year.

8. I will try out for the fall play, the winter musical or the Middle School musical.

9. I will work actively at learning about me and how my brain learns.

10. I will do every drill at 100% at practice.

11. I will take real pride in all that I do at school.

The Passion goal: find time to do it so that you have something to look forward to and to bring with you to college.

There are two groups in this room: 1. Students, teachers and staff members who are new to the St. Andrew’s community. This group has the purest fresh start. AND

2. The returning, veteran students, teachers, and staff members in their second, third, fourth, 13th, 19th, 28th, 35th or 36th year at St. Andrew’s. This group has a fresh start, but each person in this group needs help from all the rest of us returning veterans to allow a fresh start.

You who are new can be the person you truly want to be. This is a tremendous gift. New students, you won’t have this opportunity again until you go off to college.

All returning veteran students, teachers and staff members, look at the person sitting or standing to your right, now your left.

Very likely this person is a returning veteran you know. Friends expect you to be the same way you were when you left last

June. Friends will be uncomfortable with you being different.

Please let your friends change. Each returning veteran has two responsibilities: to take advantage of your own fresh start and to let your friends have a fresh start. Release your friends from having to be the way they were when they left last June. This is the greatest gift that you can give to your friends.

So I challenge you, be the person you want to be. Remember, the only person you can control is yourself. The fresh start opportunity only comes once a year. Take full advantage of it and let your friends take full advantage of their fresh start. Each one of us has a responsibility to do both.

his has been an exceptional evening for our school and me. It is rare that so many members of the extended St. Andrew’s community get the chance to see each other, catch up on what’s happened in the intervening years, and celebrate

the existence of the school. This is the strength of St. Andrew’s, this extended family that makes this school such a wonderful institution. It has been pure joy for me to work here for 28 years and to help facilitate the relationships and connections united under the theme of educating young people for college. I have loved coming to work each and every day with people who love working with kids.

St. Andrew’s will continue to thrive. I am totally confident of that because of the deep caring, energy, and spirit that was shown tonight and is a palpable presence each day throughout the buildings at St. Andrew’s. I truly thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Make it a great remainder of your day.
