TAVERNA NIGHT 2011 These days it is not often that our generation gets the chance to indulge in and share a platter of charcoal BBQ kondosouvli with their parea to hop hand-in-hand to a heart pumping hasaposerviko, sing along to an old sousta sung live by the Olympians in a social school scene where almost everybody knows your name. Only Taverna night can offer us such a fun filled family night we all want to be a part of … and that, it was, on Saturday 20th August.

This year we offered our guests a traditional Taverna-style menu with a variety of platters prepared by Harry’s catering together with live entertainment by the Olympians. The culinary change was welcomed and appreciated especially by the small group of P&F committee members who were able to work less and celebrate more with all families, friends and staff of our College who came along on the night. Raffle, lucky door and balloon bursting prizes were plentiful with uncanny multiple wins by two competitive tables on opposite ends of the hall which had us all amazed and entertained. Congratulations to our prize winners and a special thank you to our prize donors who gave so many quality gifts so generously.

VACATION CARE (GWC) Dear Parents, We have updated our policies and procedures recently. The following is for your information. It applies particularly to vacation care.

Electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras and electronic games: Nintendo DS and PSP are not permitted at any of our Centres. If a child brings an electronic game, camera or mobile phone, staff will keep this in a safe place until parents/carers arrive. Staff may also ask children to hand in certain games/toys that may be at risk of being damaged etc.

A special thank you is expressed to Harley Economou from Digital Press together with Sophie Balayannis who prepared our tickets and flyer. We also extend a warm thank you to Elia Economou, the Parish President for his MC role during the course of the night. Finally, we sincerely thank all of you who attended and supported this fundraising event with an extra special thank you to the College staff who came with their families.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN POINTS Our school is taking part in Woolworths Earn & Learn community program. From July 18th to September 18th 2011, Woolworths will give you one Earn & Learn point for every $10 you spend in store. Points will automatically appear on your shopping dockets. AFL AND THE IC11 INTERNATIONAL CUP As part of the build up for the recent 11th International Cup AFL Event held in Sydney and Melbourne, Ms Danielle McCarthy (Year 6 Teacher) captained the Sydney Women’s AFL Allstars Team (SWAFL) to victory over the Canadian Northern Lights National Team. The game was held on Thursday August 11th at 7:30pm at Macquarie University Oval, Ryde. It was a huge success for Women in AFL. The Canadians were tough opponents who went on to compete in the IC11 Tournament against USA, Papua New Guinea, Ireland and the Australian Indigenous and Multicultural Team.

Notably, this is the first time there was a Women’s International Cup for AFL. Ms McCarthy volunteered as part of the support crew for the Australian Indigenous and Multicultural Team throughout the week long IC11 event in Sydney.

Well done Year 6!

On Friday 12th August, our Junior School Debating team hosted a debate against Kambala in our new Multi-purpose room. The topic was ‘That Beauty is Only Skin Deep.’ Each school prepared

both an Affirmative and Negative team and two debates were held. The results of each debate were very close and our Negative team won our first ever debate! Congratulations to the entire Debating team for their dedication and effort this year so far.

After studying the unit Conservation of Antarctica in HSIE, Year 6 worked in groups to prepare a TV segment. In this TV segment, students explored one or more issues threatening Antarctica in the future. During this creative task, students effectively applied knowledge learnt in the unit and were introduced to the basics of effective cinematography.

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT VISIT BY WUHAN SUNSHINE CULTURE AND ARTS SCHOOL STUDY TOUR On Wednesday, 17th August, 2011 we hosted The Principals and students from the Wuhan Sunshine Culture and Arts School as part of a Study Tour organized by Mr K. Haag, Director, Australian Centre for International Education. The day included: tour of the Senior School, performance by our visitors, performances by music and drama students, lunch prepared and served by Year 11 Hospitality students.

THANK YOU On behalf of Year 12, I would like to thank all the staff and students who contributed to the success of the Year 12 barbeque on Thursday. A special thank you to Mrs Diakanastasis, Mrs Balayannis, Mrs Kringas, Mrs Mio, Mrs Grillakis, Ms Gambriell and Mr Georgoulopoulos for their contributions, and especially to Mr Kaldis for organising the day. RESPECT AND PROGRAM

a Personal Statement in the form of an essay of approximately 300 words in length, outlining the reasons for your preferences o relevant supplementary documentation o full academic records for Year 11 and Semester 1 and/or trial results of Year 12 – if available.

Each application is considered on an individual basis. Applicants who have met admissions requirements, will be invited for an interview which will be conducted by a member of the academic staff. After the interview, the university will decide whether they made you an offer to one of your preferences. o

UNDERSTANDING

This week Year 9 attended the second part of the Understanding and Respect Program. This involved travelling to the Jewish Museum, where they engaged in discussions about racism with students from Kambala, Moriah, and Granville Boys, listened to presentations from speakers who had experienced racism and genocide in Armenia, Cambodia, Africa and Australia, as well go on a tour of the museum led by Holocaust survivors.

All participants were left with much ‘food for thought’ and a greater awareness of the need for understanding and respect of difference.

UNIVERSITY OPEN DAYS are being held from mid August to mid September. The list of days has been on the noticeboard for several weeks. The Broadway universities, (Sydney, UTS and Notre Dame) will hold their days together this Saturday on 27th. Charles Sturt Uni are holding a Communication and Creative Industry Information Day on Sat 27th at the National Maritime Museum, Uni of Western Sydney’s Open Day is on the 28th at Parramatta, UNSW will be 3 September, Macquarie on 10 September and Australian Catholic Uni on 3 and 10 September. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are encouraged to attend these days as they can be fun as well as being informative. Ask a couple of friends to go with you or go with your parents.

PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE All Middle School students should have handed up their reading logs this week. These will be examined and students who have qualified by reading a minimum of 15 PRC listed books in their age range and 5 own choice books will be registered online. Any student who has not handed up their reading log in Pastoral Care must make sure the pass these on directly to Ms Kokinelis by Monday or risk missing out on a certificate.

OPTIONS FOR 2012 On Wednesday this week, I gave a presentation, talk and handout to all the Year 12 students during Pastoral Care. This talk covered the various aspects of post Year 12 options – universities, TAFE Colleges, private colleges and university colleges and the procedures for applying to them. Parents should ask their Year 12 student to show them the notes of the talk and to discuss what options that they are looking towards. I want to see all of the Year 12 students in the next few weeks after their Trials are over to discuss what options they are looking at for next year. I may be able to suggest some

On August, 20, 2011, selected students from Sydney visited the program “Fact or Fiction: Science Films Probed”, as part of the Ultimo Science Festival at the University of Technology Sydney. The program consisted of questions that challenged science fiction ideas and technologies in popular sci-fi films.

Classic sci-fi hits such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Back to the Future, Terminator 2, Die another Day and Cocoon were mined for their outlandish ideas and then taken to account by the hosts.

THE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL On Monday I went to the Athletics Carnival.

First I ran in the race.

Then I was given a ribbon.

Next I played many different games.

After that I enjoyed having lunch with my friends.

Finally I went home.

It was fun.

Questions such as “Could a light sabre become reality?” and “Could you make yourself disappear with an invisibility cloak?” were featured in the show. The show was led by the comedian Peter Berner and the Editor-in-Chief of Cosmos Magazine, Wilson da Silva.

In the interactive 90-minute session, participants watched a film clip of a particular sci-fi film, and then voted on whether each technology was fact, partly fact/fiction, or completely fiction, before ANSTO scientists provided the answers with explanations. Most were very surprised by the realities of the technologies!

φιλίες που έκανα στο σχολείο, να κρατήσουν και στο µέλλον.

ελληνικής γλώσσας του κατόχου του. Η εξετάση αυτή διεξάγεται µία φορά τον χρόνο και περιλαµβάνει διάφορα επίπεδα που απευθύνονται σε παιδιά (8-12 χρόνων), εφήβους και ενήλικες. Ενθαρρύνουµε όλους τους µαθητές του σχολείου µας να συµµετάσχουν µελλοντικά στην εξέταση αυτή, ώστε η προσπάθεια και η εκµάθηση ελληνικών τόσων χρόνων να οδηγήσει σε έναν τίτλο αναγνωρισµένο.

Φοβάµαι πως δεν θα πάρω τους υψηλούς βαθµούς που χρειάζοµαι για να περάσω στο πανεπιστήµιο. Φοβάµαι πως χωρίς την ασφάλεια του σχολείου, δεν θα µπορώ να αποφασίσω για τον εαυτό µου χωρίς τις συµβουλές των καθηγητών µου. Αλλά, ευτυχώς έχω την οικογένειά µου, που θα είναι πάντα στο πλευρό µου και θα µε βοηθήσει σ’ αυτή τη δύσκολη µετάβαση ... Λοιπόν, εδώ σ’ αφήνω, έχω άλλο διαγώνισµα αύριο! Θα τα ξαναπούµε σύντοµα.

Αγαπηµένο µου ηµερολόγιο, ∆εν το πιστεύω ότι σε δύο εβδοµάδες θα γράψω τις τελευταίες εξετάσεις µου και θα τελειώσω το Λύκειο! Εργάζοµαι πάρα πολύ σκληρά για να πετύχω κάτι και έχω πολύ άγχος και αµφιβολίες αν τελικά τα καταφέρω. Αισθάνοµαι επίσης πίεση από τους γονείς µου, από τους καθηγητές µου, αλλά ιδιαίτερα από τον ίδιο µου τον εαυτό!

Το σχολείο µου, µου έχει προσφέρει διάφορες ευκαιρίες για να βελτιώσω τις γνώσεις µου κι επίσης έχω πολλές, ευχάριστες αναµνήσεις από αυτό. Έχω δηµιουργήσει στενές σχέσεις µε διάφορους καθηγητές, οι οποίοι µ’ εχουν βοηθήσει και υποστηρίξει πολύ. Επίσης έχω συµµετάσχει σε διάφορες θεατρικές παραστάσεις και συναυλίες του σχολείου όπου έπαιζα πιάνο ή βιολί. Αυτές ήταν πάντα πολύ ευχάριστες δραστηριότητες – ιδιαίτερα επειδή είχαµε περίπου µια βδοµάδα χωρίς σχολική εργασία!

Αγαπητό µου ηµερολόγιο, Σήµερα είχα το πρώτο από τα τελευταία διαγωνίσµατα του σχολείου και τώρα νιώθω στενοχωρηµένη γιατί σκέφτηκα όλα αυτά που θα µου µείνουν αξέχαστα από το σχολείο! Όλες τις κατασκηνώσεις που κάναµε µαζί,τη φιλία και την προσπάθεια των καθηγητών µας να µας µάθουν πέντε πράγµατα, τις χαρές και τα κλάµατα στα οποία είχαµε τους φίλους µας για βοήθεια!

Οι σχολικές εµπειρίες θα µου µείνουν για πάντα αξέχαστες ειδικά επειδή είχα τους στενούς φίλους µου µαζί µου.

Σε λίγο, θα µου λείπει η καθηµερινή ρουτίνα του σχολείου, ακόµη και το κουδούνι, που µας θύµιζε ότι το διάλειµµα τέλειωσε και τώρα πρέπει να πάµε στην τάξη για δουλειά και µάθηση. SENIOR SCHOOL

Κάτι άλλο που θα µου µείνει αξέχαστο είναι το πρόγραµµα ανταλλαγής µαθητών. Αυτή ήταν µια εµπειρία που θα θυµάµαι για πάντα. Μέσα από αυτό το πρόγραµµα είχα την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσω µια άλλη χώρα, την Ελλάδα και να µάθω για τον τρόπο ζωής των Ελλήνων. Ήταν φανταστική εµπειρία!

ISA ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Tuesday 13TH SEPTEMBER Time: 8.30 am—5.00 pm Sydney Athletics Centre, Homebush Bus Times: One bus will be leaving Brighton RSL at 7:00am and another bus will be leaving St Spyridon College at 7:00am. Both buses will be returning at approximately 5:45pm at Brighton RSL and St Spyridon College.

Αισθάνοµαι πολύ µεγάλη αβεβαιότητα για το µέλλον µου έξω από το σχολείο επειδή όλοι οι συµµαθητές µου φαίνεται να ξέρουν τι θέλουν να κάνουν µε τη ζωή τους αλλά εγώ δεν έχω ακόµη µια ξεκάθαρη ιδέα. Εντάξει, αυτό δεν είναι απόλυτα σωστό. Κατά βάθος, θέλω να σπουδάσω στη Νοµική Σχολή του πανεπιστηµίου της Οξφόρδης, στο Λονδίνο! Αλλά φοβάµαι µε τα αποτελέσµατα που παίρνω µήπως δεν τα καταφέρω. Οι καθηγητές σ’ αυτό το πανεπιστήµιο είναι οι πιο πεπειραµένοι και οι φοιτητές όλοι έχουν υψηλό επίπεδο. Ενδιαφέροµαι για τον κόσµο και τη δικαιοσύνη γενικά και θα ήθελα κι εγώ να είµαι φοιτήτρια εκεί – ιδιαίτερα επειδή είναι στο εξωτερικό! Τι ευκαιρία!

BOYS FUTSAL STATE CHAMPIONS

Venue: Penrith Sports Stadium, Herbert Street, Cambridge Park Thursday 18th of August the U/16’s boys St Spyridon Futsal team attempted to be the first team in the senior school’s history to be crowned State Futsal champions.

The boys have tried now for the past two years and on each of those occasions made the final only to loose narrowly. Determination and resilience are renowned in boys sport at St Spyridon and this U/16’s squad are no different putting the disappointment of the last two years behind, the boys were committed to the cause and were confident that this year no obstacle would stand in the way of success. The boys were exceptional in their pool games, this included a win over Bossley Park who were no doubt the most difficult opponents in their pool.

Η µαµά στο µεταξύ, δεν σταµατά να µου θυµίζει ότι «η πολλή δουλειά τρώει τον αφέντη», αλλά δεν καταλαβαίνει πόσο διάβασµα έχω! Είµαι πτώµα από την κούραση και το άγχος! Θα φύγω τώρα, έχω πολλά να κάνω όπως προφορική εξέταση στα Ελληνικά αύριο και εξετάσεις στα Αγγλικά. «Τα πολλά λόγια είναι φτώχεια!» Τελικά, έχουν δίκιο που λένε ότι τα σχολικά µας χρόνια είναι τα καλύτερα της ζωής µας! ∆υστυχώς το καταλαβαίνω τώρα που ήρθε η ώρα να φύγω απ’ τα θρανία του σχολείου.

In the knockout rounds the boys faced a determined Sule College, the team that defeated the boys two years ago in the final, this time the outcome was quite the opposite - the boys defeated them 9-1 and cruised to the semi finals where John Edmunson High School was waiting.

Ειρήνη Υ.Γ. Νοµίζω πως θα υποβάλω µια αίτηση για την υποτροφία που προσφέρουν στο πανεπιστήµιο της Οξφόρδης!

After 3 years of qualifying for the State Title the boys now had a reputation and a rivalry to match with many schools. John Edmunson is one such school after the boys defeated them in last year title race they were eager to try and reverse the result. The St Spyridon boys lifted and played a very sound and tactical game that helped them win the battle for the ball and subsequently their thirst and hunger proved to be the difference with Chris Kolistasis hammering home the winner in extra time after they played a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

To all the boys congratulations for a good year in Open Boys football.

It seemed surreal that the boys were yet again in another final and behold this time a new opponent. Homebush Boys had defeated Endeavour Sports in their respective Semi final.

The match played out like a final with our boys taking an early lead and then suffering two quick goals before pegging back one to 2-2 before the fulltime whistle. At this point Panos Armenakis clinically finished off a beautiful through ball from the Captain Petro Stefadouros and clinched not only the game 3-2 but the first senior school STATE FUTSAL TITLE.

OPEN BOYS FOOTBALL The 2011 Open Boys football season has been one that is mixed with success and disappointment.

Early in the year the boys managed to win the highly contested Greek Orthodox College outdoor soccer competition and were in high spirits about the prospects of the season ahead in the ISA. The ISA Season came down to the very last game and only a win could have secured a semi final birth unfortunately the boys lost 3-1 to Redlands and as such found themselves narrowly missing out on a semi final birth.

The Open boys soccer team could not have been a success this year without the support of the Year 12 boys who even during their trials attended the fixtures at such a stressful time in their academic lives.
