When you started Year 7 we gave you a Passport to Senior School. Tonight as you leave us, we need to give you a new one - A Passport to Global Citizenship. You are well-travelled. Not because many of you have been abroad, but because you are well-educated. You know about the world and how it works; You know your own place within it.

You understand justice and what is right, and have a clear sense of what is not right. You are strong in mind, and pure of heart.

My prayer for you, my formidable children, is that whatever happens throughout your lives, you have the gift of peace always waiting for you within your own heart - because this is where true happiness resides.

The Class with the record number of twins ends up being a powerhouse of talent and originality.

An electric Showcase of what is best about our school. For the Year 12 Class of 2016, it has always been A Time to Shine. You Dared to Dream, and took us on a magical journey Over the Rainbow, wearing your Yellow Gloves. I look at you and see the flame of fire within each of you, all of different hues, all beautiful. And I can see that you have not even begun to realise the power that you have to impact on the world. I hope you never change - except to get stronger in your faith.

In a troubled and confused world, you are our singular hope for the future of our people and our planet. Go out into the world and make it a better place for all of us my dearest children.

By now, you would have received our Spring Fair Bulletin sent home and we look forward to your support for this wonderful event in our fundraising calendar. Our children definitely look forward to the Fair and we promise to bring some new forms of entertainment to keep all ages happy for the day. Please complete the form and send it back to your eldest child’s class teacher by the first day back in Term 4, Tuesday 11th October.

In Terms 2 and 3, Kingsford After School Care students have been studying different countries such as India and Germany. We have been doing many different activities and craft to do with these countries. We have made passports and each week, we collect a stamp from each country we visit. Our educator Julia has also been cooking traditional food every week and it has been delicious! We have learnt so much about the countries. The educators have been showing us pictures, word searches and facts about each country and all children have enjoyed it. We have been doing this program for around 4 months now and we have done 13 countries so far. Each week we display the flag of the country we are visiting on our display wall.

As mentioned, we invite parents to assist with running a stall and/or sponsoring. Please take the time to read the bulletin which you will also find attached at the end of this newsletter.

We are pleased to say that some sponsors have already come forward to support us which is fantastic news! The Lending Association is kindly sponsoring our BBQ and Angels of The Bay is sponsoring our photo booth. The children performed in Greek, the play written by Ka. Stella “Elia”. In attendance were His Grace, Bishop Iakovos, Fr Dimitri Kokkinos and Dr Stavros Kirimis, Consul General of Greece.

The audience were amazed by the many lines the children had to learn and the ease with which they delivered them.

Lots of fun is planned for a great day out for the children and to bring our school community together once more! We look forward to welcoming you to the Fair!

JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT With the term drawing to a close we give thanks for all the wonderful opportunities that we have been able to enjoy with the students and I wish you all a well-deserved rest.

CONGRATULATIONS Not even the damp and miserable weather could deter the Year 5 students who willingly performed at the Greek Festival at Parramatta on Sunday.

St Spyridon College, as one of the top four fundraising schools in NSW, were invited to take part in this presentation where IPSHA Federal President, Ms Deb Dalwood, presented a cheque of $137,862.10 to JDRF Australia.

Student representatives from each of the invited schools, gave a short presentation. Our Junior School Captains, Jamyson Gouveros and Adriana Drakoulis, accepted the certificate and spoke on our behalf… “…We premise our proud fundraising results on the values and principles which are taught at our school. At St Spyridon College, the harmonious development of students into intact, resilient and socially responsible persons, is promoted and nurtured. We value the community as an extension of our Orthodox Church. We have a duty to contribute to the welfare of others, and we work together as a school community to do this. Friendship, compassion and decency are our distinguishing characteristics. We thank everyone involved in this fundraising event.

The combined effort, support, encouragement and generosity, are a true reflection of dynamic community spirit known as ‘St Spyridon College’.”

THEATRICAL PERFOMANCE “ELIA” I would like to congratulate the 17 students of Year 5 who participated in the Theatrical Performance “Olive/Ελιά”, on Sunday 18th September 2016 at the Parramatta ‘Let’s go Greek Festival’. Not only did they perform breathtakingly, but what’s more they left the audience speechless with their moving presence. They are to be commended for being committed and doing their best even under heavy rain conditions. If they are able to be trustworthy individuals at this age, they will definitely be so as adults and this is more important than anything else they may achieve in their life. I congratulate them and their parents/grandparents for their enthusiastic participation!!!

JDRF PRESENTATION On Monday the 12th September, IPSHA presented a cheque to a representative of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) for the total monies raised by IPSHA schools that participated in, or donated money towards the IPSHA Fundraiser “Walk Around the World for JDRF”.

FINAL DEBATE OF THE YEAR FOR JUNIOR SCHOOL DEBATERS

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT

Both St Spyridon Debating teams ended the year on a high note! Our eight enthusiastic Junior School students hopped into the cars of our very generous parent chauffeurs and scooted off to debate a tricky topic, 'That education is the key to success'.

TERM 4 Term 4 begins Tuesday, 11th October, 2016 with a WEEK A timetable.

Students are to wear their Summer uniform.

Our negative team (including Joanna Kourgialis, Eleni Nicholas, Alexandra Bizannes and Jenna Perdikakis) were up first and managed to persuade their audience and adjudicator that self-motivation, passion and drive are essentially the keys to any kind of success.

Their opposition, argued convincingly, yet were no match for our negative team!

FOOD TECHNOLOGY Year 10 Food Technology have been extremely busy this term developing their culinary skills and artistic flair in food design.

They have been studying the area of Food Service and Catering, learning about establishment types, menus design and skills in recent developments and presentations.

Students’ assessment task was to invite a teacher for a two-course meal luncheon, whereby students designed, prepared and presented their food within a short time-frame and documented in a design portfolio. They successfully accomplished the task at the highest level of culinary skill and design. It was a task enjoyed by all. Currently, they are studying and analysing the current Food Trends in our society, due to consumer and technological influences. They have been able to analyse the effects of organic food, genetically modified and the overuse of electrolyte drinks. To keep up with current trends in food, students are developing skills in the latest craze of cake decorating, using fondant and creating naked cakes due to master chef influences.

Our affirmative team (consisting of Sophia Economou, Jamyson Gouveros, Christina Pascalis and Demetrios Paparsenos) argued that education provides better work opportunities and so leads to success. The team from Emmanuel worked hard to rebut our arguments but were unsuccessful.

Congratulations to both teams, your efforts were sensational!

Many thanks also to Mrs Bizannes, Mrs Pascalis and Mrs Paparsenos for assisting us with driving to our venue.

Last Thursday Student Council Representatives from Year 7 to Year 11 delivered warm farewell messages to our departing Year 12 who are now at the end of their formal schooling at St Spyridon College.

This is both a sad and happy time for us. We are all sad to see them leave our St Spyridon family, but we are also filled with great pride in having witnessed their development into wonderful young men and women ready to make their mark. At the ‘Farewell Assembly’ our youngest students presented Year 12 with cards they had made filled with well wishes for the future. It was heartwarming and joyful to witness students across the year groups with siblings and cousins in Year 12 share this event together. Congratulations are also extended to the 120 students from Year 7 to Year 11 who volunteered to be part of the Year 12 Doxology choir. They are to all be commended for their magnificent chanting the hymns. Thank you to Mr Picardi for preparing the students.

SHOWCASE 2016 During these end of Term Middle School assemblies we also take advantage of the many talents of our students by having them perform for their peers. Congratulations and well done to Year 9 Drama students and to Lena Tsalikis from Year 8 for her rhythmic dance routine.

Another example of the talent at St Spyridon was witnessed at Thursday evening’s SHOWCASE 2016 event. Students from across the year groups enthralled us with their showmanship and love of the performance arts. We clapped, tapped, and sang along to the tunes prepared by Ms Savva’s and Ms Livera’s music students, laughed watching the clever comic dramas pieces prepared by Mrs McCoy’s Drama groups, and admired the clarity and confident delivery of Greek dialogue by Mrs Faletas’ Modern Greek students.

Well done to all performers, students and staff who assisted in SHOWCASE 2016, and Year 7 who made their first stage debuts on this night, with their unique and hugely entertaining rendition of ‘River of Dreams’!

PREFECTS 2017 The first round vote by teachers and Year 11 students has now been completed and tallied.

This will result in a short list of applicants who will move towards preparing speeches that will be delivered next term before staff and peers.

A second round of voting will then be conducted. Students successful in proceeding on will prepare a portfolio of their achievements for interviews which will be held in Term 4. We wish all students well in their endeavours.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY The end of term Middle School Assembly celebrating the achievements of students in Term 3 was competently hosted today by Year 8 SRC’s Jordan Frazis and Nicola Skouteris.

Many students received an impressive number of certificates, testament of the great work that has been undertaken over the Term. At present

THE SECRET TO RAISING SUCCESSFUL KIDS? MISTAKES In an age where there is an increasing number of students falling victim to anxiety, depression and self-harm, educators, health

professionals and parents are left asking WHY??

Danni Miller, educator, writer, businesswoman and mother wrote an interesting article recently that is worth considering.

If we really want to set our kids up for future career success, rather than just drilling them for exam success, we should be teaching them to adopt Richard Branson’s philosophy and embrace failure “with open arms.”

According to Danni Miller if you “want to help your children succeed”, then what is needed is a “focus on their mistakes”. As adults, the single biggest mistake we make is our carefully staged, micromanaged, Instagram-filtered focus on perfection. This has led to a generation of kids and parents who are paralysed by the fear of failure.

Branson, who has had at least 14 of his own businesses fail, believes that as failure and rejection are an inevitable part of business, what will really set someone up for longevity is their ability to deal with these events.

We could all do with reframing our thinking on failure. And we could all do with celebrating more stories of those who not only tripped, but got up, dusted themselves off, and chose to simply put one foot in front of the other and move forwards again

Too often students feel so crushed by a school grade that was lower than they had hoped for that they fall into a panicked anxiety and or simply stop trying. Sometimes students mistakenly believe that a misstep will mean their life is ruined.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK Even though Year 12 Prefects no longer on campus leading the Friday assemblies, we will be continuing their STUDENT OF THE WEEK initiative.

The truth is that we are not defined only by our successes, but rather by how we manage our falls. Catastrophizing, or using the dark-edged shame as a device to elicit change, not only doesn’t work, but may have devastating consequences for someone who thinks there is no way forward and feels hopeless rather than hopeful.

Recently a Year 8 student approached his Modern Greek teacher Mr Vassiliades to thank him for teaching him Greek. Even though the teacher was appreciative he was also a bit confused and so asked why? The student then explained that whilst walking home from school last week he heard the distressed voice of someone calling out from the front lawn of their home. As the student got closer he noticed an elderly gentleman collapsed on the lawn, and so went in the front of the property to try and help. The student (who is not of Greek background) understood from the man’s speech that he was Greek, so he said “Yiasou” to him. As a result the elderly gentleman continued to frantically talk. The student did not understand most of what was being said so he used his phone to translate some of the words he recognised. It turned out that the elderly gentleman was calling for help and asking the student to go get his wife who was inside.

It is much more valuable to help children view their disappointments as a learning opportunity, a time of reflection and growth, a time for building resilience and strength as result of picking themselves up and moving on.

As adults we should be brave too about sharing our own failings for these give our children the sense that they also can move on after a stumble. Kids don’t need or want perfection from their parents, what they yearn for is authenticity.

In fact, the reality is that despite the cautionary tales we often feed our children, we are all instinctively far more drawn to those who have lost and learned. Even the Ancient Greeks knew that heroes who displayed bravery, resilience, resourcefulness and determination were far more likely to win hearts and minds than those who only ever sailed cautiously through life.

Year 8 student Zali Albertiri’s, good deed once again has shown that the students of our College have heart and understand the true meaning of care, responsibility and citizenship. Zali is a credit to his family and

school and is our last student of the week for this term.

Year 12 students of our Classical Greek studies program attended, at the invitation of our Classical Greek counterparts of Pymble Ladies College to participate, in a Greek Symposium held on September 14.

Within the scope of the Symposium, students Hara Lavdioti and Danae Kyriakaki were afforded the opportunity to attend the lecture of Associate Professor P. McKechnie on Herodotus Erato and also Bob Cowan’s speech analysing the critical aspects of Aristophanes’ Clouds.

A distinctly Ancient Greek flavour was the dinner theme as all attendees were crowned with a wreath and served traditional Greek dishes whilst our students had the opportunity to meet with fellow students of other schools in attendance (Grammar, Riverview, Xavier (Melbourne) and Pymble) where views were exchanged on the works of Herodotus and Aristophanes as these works constitute HSC material for this year’s examinations in Classical Greek.

Alexandropoulou (Classical Greek teacher), είχαν την ευκαιρία, ύστερα από πρόσκληση του ομώνυμου τμήματος του Pymble Ladies College, να συμμετάσχουν σε Ελληνικό Συμπόσιο, που διοργανώθηκε στις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου στο ομώνυμο Κολλέγιο. Στα πλαίσια του Συμποσίου οι μαθήτριες Hara Lavdioti and Danae. Kyriakaki, είχαν την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσουν τη διάλεξη του καθηγητού κ. P. McKechnie για το βιβλίο Ερατώ του Ηροδότου καθώς και την ομιλία του Bob Cowan, όπου αναλύθηκαν σημαντικές πτυχές του Αριστοφάνειου έργου Νεφέλες.

The Sydney Scholars Awards offer Year 12 students commencing studies in 2017 the opportunity to apply for scholarships ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 in value, for up to 5 years of study. An Introduction to Spatial Design This workshop provides students with an introduction to a variety of knowledge and skills required to navigate the field of spatial design. Like all design practices, this workshop introduces students to the importance of considered aesthetics, functionality, brief and cost issues.

Drawing Objects (but not as you know it) Led by prize-winning Sydney-based artist and senior lecturer, Peter Sharp, this workshop will reinvigorate the practice of still life drawing.

Workshop participants will rethink the meaning of line, positive and negative spaces, light and colour.

The group collaborated together to take part in various enjoyable activities such as Frisbee and soccer. The students once again proved their enthusiasm by being evermore eager to return to the museum and conclude their second and last activity. Without the tireless work and effort put by all teachers and staff along with the collaboration and enthusiasm of the students, the mesmerising Year 8 journey to the Australian National Museum would not have been possible, and was surely an experience to be forever remembered.

SCIENCE EXCURSION On the 9th of September, Year 8 had the privilege to attend the National Australian Museum in order to sum up their Term 3 Science studies on fossils and minerals while enjoying their learning time in a creative and different manner. Year 8 were accompanied by the Year 8 Science teachers.

When the Year 8 groups first arrived at the museum, they were fascinated with the numerous rocks and fossils the museum had to offer and were eager to learn more about them.

This led to the teachers and staff of the museum to split the students up into two groups and start to show them around the museum; both groups were captivated with the outstanding amount of rocks and fossils the museum had to offer and started to partake in various tasks to allow themselves to further advance their knowledge on the topic.

Students Recount: “Year 11 Physics Class were privileged to visit the IMAX Theatre, obtain an insight and enhance our knowledge on the wonders of space. Three documentaries that we watched substantially deepened our comprehension of astrophysics. This experience broadened our scope of the topic we are currently studying, The Cosmic Engine, and not only proved to be an educational endeavour but a fun one too.

Not to mention, our teacher Dr Lakshmi treated us to ice-cream!

Captured by the exquisite images of our galaxy, the ‘Milky Way’, and more specifically different supernova remnants like the ‘Crab Nebula’, the perceptions we initially had of the universe changed and heightened our sense of interest on the topic. We also learnt about the cause of natural disasters regarding our planet, that include earthquakes, but also enlightened us with how science enables us to take appropriate measures to keep people out of harm’s way and sustain minimal damage.”

YEAR 11 PHYSICS EXCURSION TO IMAX Preliminary Physics students are currently studying the module called Cosmic Engine. It has been a privilege to join them on a journey from the Earth to the edge of the Universe through the eyes of telescopes.

“Last week, we the students of Yr11 physics class visited the famous and the largest screen in the southern hemisphere, IMAX. There we experienced the extended knowledge of our preliminary topic: ‘The Cosmic Engine’ and learning how the human race has come so far through research and the development of the telescope to reach and reveal the answers of our beloved universe that we all live in and share. We watched three documentaries, The Hubble 3D, Forces of nature and Hidden Universe 3D”.

They got to learn about the challenges faced by astrophysicists and how information is gathered about distant stars and galaxies. The documentary Hidden Universe, allowed students to visualize the deepest reaches of our universe with unprecedented clarity through real images captured by the world’s most powerful telescopes in 3D.

Students also watched Hubble 3D which enabled them to witness the advancement in technology and use of space based telescope to obtain more information from our cosmic neighbourhood.

BOYS SPORT ISA BASKETBALL TRIALS th SATURDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2016 Nearly all of the boy’s teams competed in a tri series basketball trial between three schools.

Redlands, St Andrews Cathedral and St Spyridon College all met at Narrabeen sports centre and played against each other in an effort to prepare all teams for the regular season as well as give all coaches an opportunity to ensure that the right boys were selected in the correct teams.

ISA ATHLETICS Congratulations to the intermediate boys on winning this years ISA Division 2 championship shield.

It also gave the coaches an opportunity to see the strengths and weaknesses of each team and areas to work on.

Our 5 teams played in 10 games of which the St Spyridon teams won 7 and lost three.

Highlights included watching the Open boys win both games comfortably with a number of new boys joining the team for the first time.

The most impressive highlight of the day was watching the U17 boys win both games comfortably as well as the young year 7 boys tasting their first Basketball victory for the College against St Andrews Cathedral School.

In the U15 Boys it was great to see the growth of the boy’s skills in particular Peter Vassilis and Brendan Borodyansky who have made excellent gains in skill in the off season. The same could also be said of the some of the Open Boys who have also made significant gains in skill particularly George Andrianakos.

While the trials proved to be a fruitful experience and a welcomed one. All teams will be invited to train in the second week of the holidays on Thursday 6th October 2016
