EQUESTRIAN PROGRAMME
We aim to ensure that all students regardless of their chosen discipline learn a range of skills that demonstrates safe handling skills, capabilities of care for their horse and, safe and successful riding in a varied environment.
Based on the riding foundations on dressage, show jumping, cross-country, fitness and conditioning, we have developed levels from introductory to advanced. Once competence is reached by the student, they are awarded a certificate and progress to the next level. All students start at the same level and those more competent quickly move though the levels, gaining certificates along the way.
Horse welfare is very much in the forefront of what we do. Therefore, we aim to progress students from being competently able to care for their own horse to caring for a variety of horses to a high standard, identifying illness and injures, treatments, as well as travel and competition care. These skills are also recognised, and certificates awarded as they achieve each level.
It is also important to us that students get a firsthand experience of the wide range of equine related industries within the surrounding area, which can lead to an equine career pathway. We have termly field trips which showcase the racing, breeding, yearling preparation, veterinary and sport horse opportunities.
Emphasis is placed on student safety, and to provide an environment that is safe, supportive, and positive for students so that they can be successful in their learning experience.
We ensure St. Peter’s Equestrian Centre students have a quality equestrian experience supported by facilities and coaching that will help reach their long and short-term goals.
Our experienced and qualified coaches work with each rider to set goals and design a programme where progress can be monitored, and objectives or goals are worked towards and modified as required.

Dressage
Tailored to suit you and your horse, private dressage lessons are available with our experienced coaches. With a 20m x 60m dressage arena full time, students can develop their test riding skills as well as complete practice dressage tests to prepare for competition. Lessons cater to those wanting to learn the foundations of dressage or the seasoned dressage competitor, as well as jumpers wanting to improve their flatwork for jumping.
Poles
A great way to build strength and improve the horse’s way of going, poles sessions provide riders the opportunity to learn a variety of skills including rhythm control, balance and rider position.
Show Jumping
With a full set of show jumps on offer, students can practice and refine their show jumping skills in group or private sessions. Fortnightly practice evenings are run alongside the lesson programme to prepare students for competition. Lessons cater for students who are just starting to learn to jump, through to competitive riders.
Show Hunter
Show Hunter provides a solid foundation for correct and technical riding. A full set of Show Hunter fences are available to allow students to prepare for competition and practice their skills.
Cross Country
Our large cross country paddock boasts a variety of different fences to enhance cross country training. Whether you are an event rider or looking to add some variety to your horse’s training, cross country sessions are a great addition to a training programme.

Horse Management
Being able to care for your horse safely and independently is an essential part of horse ownership. Our Horse Management programme has been developed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to be safe and confident around horses. Topics include handing, grooming, saddlery and equipment, health, and farrier care. Guest speakers are also brought in to expand further on different topics.
Practice Nights
Run fortnightly, practice nights offer students the chance to ride a dressage test in front of a judge and/or jump a show jumping/hunter course in preparation for competition. These are the perfect opportunity for those new to competing to learn the rules and processes involved, or for more advanced competitors to give their horses valuable competition training.

WEEKEND FEEDING AND RIDING
The Equestrian Centre is open with supervision for advertised periods twice per day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Outside of these times, the centre is closed for riding to students who do not have an accompanying adult.
Weekend Riding
The staff member present is in charge, and all the students must always comply with the instructions of the staff member. In the event of an emergency all people on site must follow the instructions of the staff member in charge.
Riding may be limited to certain areas; the staff member in charge will advise you of this.
No student can ride without supervision. Parents wanting to supervise their child/ren to ride their horse outside of staffing time must complete the Parent Volunteer process.
If no riders or less than three riders book in for supervised time, the time advertised for riding may be reduced.
Weekend Feeding
Horses will be checked and fed twice a day by staff.
Students can request for their horses to be given hard feed during the weekends by premixing their feed and placing it in the allocated area in the feed room. Staff are also able to prepare feeds and care for horses if students are unwell or absent.
Leave Weekends
Horses can stay on site during leave weekends. Staff will be available to feed and check horses during this time. No riding supervision will be offered.
RIDING PROCEDURES
At St. Peter’s Equestrian, we hold ourselves and our riders to the highest of standards. Therefore, there are a number of riding procedures that must be followed:
Leading Horses
Horses must be lead in a halter and lead rope which is in good working order. When being ridden, horses must be in a bridle – they are not to be ridden in a halter at any time.
Tacking Up
Horses can be groomed and tacked up in any of the top yards. For day students who have a float or a truck, horses can be tied to these, or in the top yards. Floats must be attached to a car if horses are being tied to them.
Student Attire
Students must be dressed appropriately and safely for riding and caring for their horses. While riding, students must wear a helmet compliant with current safety standards. Back protectors that meet current safety standards must be worn during cross country. Riding boots with a heel must be worn when riding a horse. Fully covered in shoes, such as riding boots or gumboots, must be always worn around horses.
When riding, students must wear long pants such as jodhpurs or riding tights, and a shirt with sleeves, such as a polo shirt or tee shirt. Singlets are not permitted for riding. The St. Peter’s Equestrian riding top is recommended.
Riding
During lessons or independent riding, horses must be wearing appropriate tack for the activity being carried out. Tack must be in good, safe condition. Bareback riding is permitted but a bridle must be worn at all times when riding. Students must always be considerate of the other riders and horses around them, particularly when riding in shared spaces.
Horses should be warmed up and cooled down appropriately before and after their lessons, for at least 5-10 minutes. After riding, horses should be washed, sponged or brushed to remove all sweat and dirt, and then appropriately rugged to return to the paddock. Students should check their horses over for any injuries, shoeing issues or ailments after their ride.
Supervision
All riding must occur under supervision from a St. Peter’s Equestrian staff member or supervised by their parent. Parents wanting to access locked areas must have completed all the steps required and seek approval from the Head of Equestrian. Riders may only be supervised by their own parents, unless permission is given from both parents and the Head of Equestrian.
HORSE CARE EXPECTATIONS
The welfare of the animals in our care is of high importance to us. This is why we have clear guidelines and expectations of all of our students when it comes to the care and management of their horse.
Daily Inspection
Students should undertake a daily inspection of their horse to ensure that it is in good health and free from injuries. A student must check the following:
• The eyes, nose and mouth of their horse are clean and free of any discharge
• Legs should be cool to touch and free of swelling
• There are no signs of lameness and/or discomfort
• A normal number of droppings have been passed
• That feed has been eaten and the horse looks bright and alert.
Feed and Water
Hay is fed out twice daily to horses as part of the equestrian fees. Hard feed is to be supplied by students at their cost if their horse requires it.
Students are expected to hard feed their own horse in the afternoon if their horse requires it, unless otherwise arranged by staff. The Equine Coordinator will distribute hard feed in the morning.
Water troughs should be checked daily, and students are expected to clean their troughs at least once per fortnight, although weekly cleaning is recommended.
Rugs
Horses should be rugged appropriately for the weather conditions. Students should monitor the temperature under the rug to ensure their horse is comfortable. Consult staff if you need assistance with choosing a rug for your horse.
Cleaning of Paddocks and Yards
Students are expected to keep their paddocks clean. This includes picking up manure and cleaning their troughs. It is advised that students muck out their paddocks daily, but this must be done at a minimum of once every three days. Troughs should be cleaned fortnightly, or weekly during summer when it is hot.
Yards are available for students to use. These must be cleaned of all manure and hay after they have been used.
Top tip:
Speak to a member of the Equestrian Team if you have any questions regarding a suitable rug to purchase.
