Firstly, a confession...
Between the ages of 17 and 20, I saw We Will Rock You in the West End around 25 times. I have a group of friends - some of whom are as far afield as Australia - that I met because of the show. We’ve celebrated 16th birthdays to 40th birthdays together, and we still talk every day
I mention this only to put into context what a special musical We Will Rock You is to me. Not as a diehard Queen fan, but as a theatre-goer. It’s the show that introduced me to the idea that a shared performance is a special thing. Friendships and bonds formed through performing arts - in whatever capacity - are unique.
It is always fitting that the Upper School Production is something which the Year 7 and Year 8 pupils work on together. It pushes them outside their comfort zone, it demands commitment and determination and, most importantly, it brings them together as a team. Every single one of the children in front of you tonight has played a role in the success of the show, and it has been humbling to see the patience, support and encouragement that they can offer one another when truly put to the test.
It is also fitting that We Will Rock You is the first production I’ve directed at St Hugh’s which has brought together the new ‘Dream Team’. Mark, Ann-Marie and Ellie - your dedication is unwavering and your enthusiasm infectious. Thank you for all of your incredible hard work.
To you, the audience, I hope that you’re able to experience the magic of the show that I did when I first saw it over twenty years ago!

The time is the future...
The place is the i-Planet we once knew as Earth...
Life is lived virtually and run by the reigning company, Globalsoft, as well as the menacing Killer Queen. No crowds gather, no bands play, no social interaction...nothing.
The rebellious Galileo Figaro and his new found companion, Scaramouche, find a way to “break free” from this fantasy life, meeting the last rock ‘n’ roll rebels, the Bohemians, along the way.
Can Galileo defeat the all-powerful Killer Queen and restore music and life to the world?
