Featured Speakers Mandeep Kaur- Mandeep is Business and Leadership Coach and an advocate for the Sikh Community in Wisconsin. Mandeep is a survivor of the 2012 Sikh Temple shooting in Wisconsin. This is the 20th anniversary of this horrible attack on our Sikh neighbors. Mandeep will educate us about the Sikh community, their history, culture and religion. Following her keynote opener, there will be a workshop to help educators learn how to teach about Sikhism, free curriculum about Sikh history, religion and culture, as well as an introduction to curriculum from the University of Pennsylvania called “Teaching After 911” which will help educators connect this event to the impact on marginalized communities across our nation.

Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings

Professor Emerita and former Kellner Family Distinguished Professor in Urban Education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction and was Faculty Affiliate in the Departments of Educational Policy Studies, Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis and Afro American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Current President of the National Academy of Education.

2005--2006 president of the American Educational Research Association. LadsonBillings’ research examines the pedagogical practices of teachers who are successful with African American students. She also investigates Critical Race Theory applications to education.

Anton Schulzki Anton Schulzki has been a teacher with District 11 in Colorado Springs since 1983, and has served as department chair, as well as on numerous committees at the district, state, and national levels. Schulzki has been active in NCSS since 2001 as a conference presenter, a House of Delegates representative for the Canada Community, and House of Delegates’ Steering Committee member and 2010 Steering Committee chair. Schulzki served on the NCSS Board of Directors in 2010 in his role as steering committee chair and served 2013-2016 as an elected board member. Schulzki recently completed a term as president of the Colorado Council for the Social Studies.

Sikh Temple shooting survivor Mandeep Kaur and the Sikh Coalition of Wisconsin will help you to learn about Sikhism and Sikh culture and history in the United States and Wisconsin as well as connect to see how the aftermath of 911 impacted the Sikh community in Wisconsin.

The University of Pennsylvania recently launched The Teaching Beyond September 11th Project which is a multimodal curriculum for high school and college educators and students about the ongoing global impact of 9/11, focusing on the years 2001-2021. The Sikh Coalition worked to create the module on 2012 about the Oak Creek shooting. Gain access to these materials through this workshop.

Saturday AWARDS Morning INFORMATION Schedule Global Citizen Award--Madeline Uraneck Just because a woman has traveled solo through, held jobs in, or studied in 64 countries doesn’t make her a global expert.

Just because she’s circled back to revisit Japan 8 times, Sweden 11 times, and Norway 12 times doesn’t make her an accomplished linguist. But it does make her willing to self-identify as “global citizen.”

I feel comfortable being in many of the world’s more isolated spaces, such as a tiny village on a mountain top. I love temperature extremes, from cross-country skiing in snowy forests to summer plunges in icy waterfalls to wandering across wind-blown deserts.

My best surprises come from the remarkable people I meet, the strangers who reach out a friendly hand to guide me to a mosque or a dance hall, then bring me home to their own hut or living room. Small children sense my family radar and become good guides and language teachers. Even though I am a woman without children, I have more families than most.

As I explore the grand patchwork of ethnicity and cultures, I find that people share my desire for creativity, joy, and peace. On these pages, I share some reflections and will value your responses.

WCSS Teacher of the Year— Toni Fink As a second-grade teacher at the Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School, I am proud of my Latinx heritage and have had the privilege of growing up in Milwaukee, living in two Spanish speaking countries, and exploring five more. These experiences help me connect on a personal level with my students and families. I am passionate about seeing my students do well, both in and outside the classroom. I strive to engage students to become empathetic, active citizens. My favorite part of teaching social studies is bringing in the students’ personal experiences and knowledge. Milwaukee is such a diverse community that everyone has something to contribute to our collective learning. My goal is to be creative in effective teaching strategies, meeting students where they are, and helping them grow to their fullest potential. I continue my personal quest to keep learning FOR my students and FROM my students. As a matter of fact, I am currently being tutored by my students in the basics of Pokémon. :) When I am not teaching, I enjoy learning new things, cooking, reading, nature and being with family and friends.

Civil Rights/Liberties Award— Erin McCarthy Erin McCarthy is a a National Board Certified 8th grade social studies teacher at Greendale Middle School.

She is the 2020 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. During her 10th year teaching in 2022 she took a leave of absence to complete research in Greece as a Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Grantee investigating how education ecosystems welcome and create a sense of belonging groups who are often excluded.

AWARDS INFORMATION SnavelyMichalko Award-- 2021 Recipient Sherri Michalowski Sherri is currently in her 40th year of teaching. Thirty-three of those years have been teaching 8th-grade social studies for the Elmbrook School District in Brookfield. Sherri has an elementary education degree from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. She earned her Masters Degree in Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University in 1998 and became a Nationally Board Certified educator in early adolescence social studies.

Sherri has been a member of WCSS since 2013; since then, she has served as a Southwest delegate, President-Elect, President, and Past President.

Before her involvement in WCSS, Sherri served as a teacher consultant and a cocoordinator of the Wisconsin State Geographic Bee for the Wisconsin Geographic Alliance. Currently, Sherri finds great fulfillment collaborating with individuals entering the field of education. She works with student teachers from a range of colleges and universities, presents at local and national conferences, and teaches in Mount Mary’s education program.

In 2012, the National Council for Geographic Education awarded Sherri their Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2018, the Wisconsin Association of Colleges for Teacher Education granted Sherri their PreService Educator Mentor Award. In 2019, the School District of Elmbrook honored Sherri with studentnominated Elmbrook Influential Educator Award.

Sherri has been married for 36 years to Ski, who is a retired special education teacher. They have two children: Alexandra, 26, and Nick, 25. In her free time, Sherri likes to spend time with her family and friends and loves every opportunity she can take to travel.

SnavelyMichalko Award-- 2022 Recipient Christine Kadonsky Christine Kadonsky has been teaching U.S. History at Wausau West since 2001.

She was impressed by WCSS when she attended her first conference as a preservice teacher. Christine has served on the WCSS Board for 18 years, including roles as the Awards Committee Chair, Recording Secretary, Vice President, EdCamp organizer, conference presenter, and unofficial WCSS shutterbug. She was honored to be selected as the 2018 WCSS Distinguished High School Teacher of the Year.

Christine completed her MA – History as a James Madison Fellow and later served as the 2010 James Madison Congressional Fellow. She has served as a Teacher Fellow and Teacher Facilitator for teacher institutes at Mount Vernon. Christine has been recognized as a 2018 Herb Kohl Fellow, 2014 Wisconsin VFW High School Teacher of the Year, and 2010 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year from the Gilder Lehrman Institute.

Christine believes in the WCSS Mission to support and advocate for social studies education, teachers, and students. She continues to be grateful for the opportunity to work with outstanding educators – past and present WCSS Board members – as we strive to fulfill the WCSS Mission.

Christine is honored to receive the WCSS Snavely /Michalko Award and she remembers fondly her dear friend Sally Michalko.

Jennifer Morgan, a middle school social studies teacher at West Salem Middle School in West Salem, Wisconsin, has been elected to the position of Vice-President of the National Council for the Social Studies. In addition to teaching, Jennifer is a past president of the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies and currently serves as its Executive Director of External Affairs.

Jennifer received a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and a Master of Education degree from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Jennifer served on the NCSS Board of Directors from 2015-2018. She chaired the Rho Kappa Advisory Council during the creation of Jr. Rho Kappa and a new scholarship for high school members.

Vote, and be Counted: Educating Students about Wisconsin Elections Mar 12

Session 1

Presenters: Wisconsin Elections Commission Wisconsin Elections Commission is developing a public education campaign focused on two main topics: how elections in Wisconsin really work; and why elections in our state are so important. This non-partisan initiative would target high school students via social studies/civics classes and other school groups to prepare them to be educated voters. Meanwhile, a public facing media campaign will parallel and complement the classroom piece. Attendees will get a sneak preview of the initial content that will become available for use beginning in the early fall of 2022, leading up to the general election in November. A goal of this interactive session is to bring teachers together to brainstorm ideas about how they would use this content in their classrooms and give them an opportunity to contribute to the classroom media and discussion formats and topics.

Cultivating Civic Culture in Your Classroom

Presenters: Caryn Rossiter, The Cato Institute Explore and address the state of public discourse and partisanship in the country. Learn how to set an example of constructive engagement on areas of disagreement while providing opportunities to emphasize areas of agreement in your classroom discussions.

The workshop will demonstrate different methods to model and promote civil discourse in your classroom /school.

The Evolution of Hip Hop: Knowledge of Self leads to Informed Action

Session 1

Presenter: Andrew Hartman Middleton-Cross Plains School District Attendees will be introduced to the current research and theories behind the hip hop pedagogical approach to civic and social justice education model - the theoretical understanding that underpins the Evolution of Hip Hop teaching model and cross-curricular marriage between Fine Arts and the Social Studies. Resources, readings and literature will be made available both through handouts and via online portal.

In this session participants will join in a “typical day” of the course, Hip Hop Evolution. This includes a typical “cipher” and participation in the five pillars of hip hop. Attendees will learn how the principles of hip hop pedagogy and instruction are used to create a social studies classroom that creates a culturally inclusive classroom that develops advocates and activists for the 21st Century.

Presenters: Linda Dean, Museum of the American Revolution Philadelphia Presenting a well-rounded history of our nation requires teachers to present diverse perspectives and experiences. The Museum of the American Revolution’s new Finding Freedom online interactive resource explores the stories of five real people of African descent living in wartime Virginia as they contemplated their best opportunities for freedom, liberty, and self-determination. Discover the many helpful features this resource offers teachers and students and explore opportunities for using them in your classroom in this case study of two of those featured individuals, Deborah and Eve. This presentation would be suitable for middle and high school teachers.

Building Media Literacy Skills with Wisconsin’s Learners

Presenter: Nick Ostrem, PBS THIS SESSION WILL BE LIVE STREAMED FOR VIRTUAL ATTENDEES How do your students know that the information they find online is accurate and honest? How do they know if the viral video they watched isn’t a deep fake used to spread misinformation? These questions are at the driving force of a nationwide movement toward improving media literacy, which the National Association for Media Literacy Education defines as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and act using all forms of communication. Media literacy is an increasingly important tool for our young people and it will take work from all of us to improve media literacy skills for our students. This session will share free classroom media and professional development resources to build your media literacy expertise from PBS Wisconsin. Participants will have time to explore resources and discuss tools and strategies for building media literacy with students that can be integrated into the classroom tomorrow.

Presenters: Alyssa Mussa, Act 31 Coordinator Milwaukee Public Schools & WCSS SE Delegate Board Member Elementary teachers are invited to learn about print and digital resources to uphold and surpass the expectations of Wisconsin Act 31.

Participants will learn tips for planning lessons and how to evaluate materials for teaching about Native American histories, cultures, treaty rights, tribal sovereignty, and contemporary happenings.

Unsettling Narratives: Teaching About Indigenous Genocide in North America

Session 2

Presenter: George Dalbo, Clinton School District & Doctoral Student UMN-Twin Cities How did we come to own these United States? From first encounters between Euro-Americans and Indigenous peoples to modern-day reconciliation and Indigenous resistance movements, this session will examine ways to teach about the history of Indigenous Nations in the United States from 1600 to the present through the lens of genocide and settler colonialism, exploring the legacies of colonization, forced removal, assimilation, and genocide. Ultimately, we will turn our focus to historical and contemporary narratives of Indigenous survival, refusal, resistance, and resurgence. Aimed at middle and high school teachers (teaching a variety of social studies disciplines), participants will come away with both frameworks, unit and lesson ideas, and resources to use in their own classrooms. No advanced knowledge is necessary. This session will examine content germane to both ACT 30 Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Act 31 American Indian Studies in Wisconsin.

Presenter: Dr. Andrea Arenas UW-Madison, Jeremy Ault & Santiago Chaves Escuela Verde This presentation is for middle school and high school teachers who are interested in incorporating more representative histories into their classrooms. This presentation will highlight the work of Escuela Verde, a public charter high school located in the Silver City Neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jeremy Ault and Santigo Chavez of Escuela Verde designed an on-line course entitled Human Voice. The course utilized the text and oral histories of the Somos Latinas History Project (Somos Latinas).

The Teaching Beyond September 11th Curriculum Project Presenter: Dr. Ameena Ghaffar-Kucher, University of Pennsylvania The Teaching Beyond September 11th Curriculum Project provides educators with materials and pathways to explore the ongoing consequences of 9/11 through a social justice lens. This multi-model curriculum contains 20 stand-alone modules that include over 50 lessons across six themes. The lesson plans have been developed by a diverse range of inter/national scholars, practitioners, and community leaders who are from (and/or work with) various communities impacted by 9/11 and foregrounds perspectives that are often overlooked. The curriculum is open access and freely available to all.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the curriculum to Social Studies educators in Wisconsin and to showcase how to use and integrate the lesson plans into high school curricula. Simulations of specific lessons as well as discussions on teaching sensitive topics will be part of the series. The interactive workshop will be conducted virtually making it easy for anyone who is interested to attend.

Presenter: Erika Lowery, Institute for Curriculum Services, San Francisco, CA Where does antisemitism come from? This is a question that students often ask when learning about the Holocaust. This session gives teachers the tools and materials to help students better understand the history of the longest hatred.

learning spaces Presenters: DMichael Hartwell, PBS Imagine being a student and only seeing inspiring things about people like you during one month in the year, or not at all. Media, in all of its forms, has immense power to shape ideas. Digital media can influence how we see others, and how we see ourselves. It can break down barriers, create powerful role models, and provide a meaningful starting point for fostering a culturally responsive learning space. This session will highlight free, standards-aligned PBS digital media resources that can bring accurate, local, and authentic representation of diverse identities to classrooms across the state. We will highlight brandnew features in our popular (and completely refreshed) Wisconsin Biographies collection, Wisconsin First Nations resources, and we will touch upon additional new resources that can bring representation to your classroom from our standards-aligned and free Wisconsin-produced educational media collections.

“Bamboo Behind Barbed Wire: Incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans During World War II”

Presenter: Ron Kuramoto, Executive Director of Peace Learning Center of Milwaukee. President of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) – Wisconsin Chapter. Executive Committee member of the Asian American Pacific Islander Coalition of Wisconsin.

This workshop will introduce educational resources, curricula, instructional guidelines and other useful classroom tools to explore: • What caused this large scale denial of civil rights to occur in America without any legal due process?Including APIDA Histories and Narratives in K-12 Classrooms: Benefits, Barriers, and Best Practices • What educational lessons can be learned from these tragic events?

• How can educators help insure that these legal atrocities never happen again?

Civic Dialogue through Role Playing in a Town Hall Meeting

Session 3

Presenter: Dr. Edric Johnson, UW-Whitewater This session reinforces the importance of civic dialogue as an essential part of citizenship within a society. Key components of planning and implementing a drama-based teaching strategy (Town Hall Meeting) will be introduced in this session. Students step into role and explore multiple perspectives to make decisions about a problem or a proposed change. Three social studies curricular entry points are found to be the most productive as a starting point which include literary text, informational text, or human dilemma. Although this strategy can be applied at various grade levels (K-16), participants will be invited to embody a town hall meeting from the literary text, The Lorax.

Additional teaching tips include how to: 1) to present the issue in role; 2) ask for opinions form individual townspeople; and 3) complicate the issue further and keep multiple sides of a debate alive.

A failure to implement: Teaching the 1968 Kerner Commission Report and its effects

Session 3

Presenter: Dr. Dean Vesperman, UW-River Falls, WCSS King (2020) challenged teachers to aid students in examining the fact that the values of justice, freedom, equality, and equity have been intentionally ignored. This central principle of teaching Black History is exemplified in the events surrounding the riots during the summer of 1967, President Johnson’s creation of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, the Commission’s recommendations, which were rejected by Johnson, and history or race relations since 1968. This presentation provides an interactive framework unit teachers can use to meet the challenge put forth by King (2020). The will be an interactive presentation for middle or high school teachers, which will include an examination of the Kerner Commission Report, discussion of various pedagogies to use while examining the document, and an interactive discussion about teaching race relations post Kerner.

Sunday Afternoon Schedule Media Literacy (Resource Evalution/Bias/Fake News) & Current Events for Any Classroom

Presenter: Adam Jacobi & Dr. J. Scott Baker, Ph.D. Teachers can hold short debates on any issue in which they want students to better understand multiple perspectives. This session will immerse educators (primarily grades 6-12) in classroom debate activities to help students discern fact from so-called fake news, and engage in higher-order thinking while cultivating critical listening. Various formats of interscholastic debate will be shared, to implement in the classroom and/or for extracurricular teams. Despite a rich heritage in debate, Wisconsin has dwindled to fewer than 5% of middle and high schools participating in interscholastic debate, compared to two-thirds participating in interscholastic speech (forensics). In recent years, more accessible formats have made it much easier for busy teachers and students to take on debate without undue burdens on their time. The presentation will be facilitated by consultants with the Harvard Debate Council, one of whom is a board member of the National Speech & Debate Association.

Best Practices (THIS SESSION WILL BE LIVE STREAMED FOR VIRTUAL ATTENDEES) Presenters: Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan, The Asian American Education Project The contributions of Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) communities are often omitted, marginalized, or misrepresented in K-12 curricula. Including APIDA histories and narratives in educational programs is an effective and long-term solution for combating hate and ignorance. Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan is the Co-Executive Director and Director of Curriculum Development for The Asian American Education Project. She is also the inaugural Director of the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Center at San Diego State University and the author of 350+ children's books, mainly about APIDA content. Previously, she was a teacher educator and a K-8 classroom teacher. In this workshop, she will share FREE curricula, resources, and professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers. She will discuss the importance of teaching APIDA histories and narratives. She will examine benefits, barriers, and best practices.

Cultural Citizenship and Puerto Ricans in NYC: An Inquiry Unit

Presenter: Dr. Gerardo Aponte-Safe, University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse This session presents an Inquiry Design Model (IDM) unit for 9-12 social studies about a historical case study on the educational experiences-struggles and resistance--of Puerto Rican migrants to NYC in the mid-20th century using the framing of cultural citizenship, “the ways people organize their values, their beliefs... and their practices based on their sense of cultural belonging” (Silvestrini, 1997, p. 44). The goal of the IDM is to guide learners to understand cultural citizenship as civic engagement, especially by marginalized communities, to move to a fuller understanding of citizenship. The IDM centers on the experiences of Puerto Rican migrants in New York City public schools after World War II, unpacking Puerto Rican experiences of marginalization due to language and culture, despite their status as U.S. citizens. Additionally, the unit presents examples of community organizing and partnerships as a form of resistance to marginalization and an exercise in cultural citizenship.

The Teach Different Method: A Simple but powerful strategy for engaging students

in deep conversations Presenter: Dan Fouts, Teach Different Now more than ever students need a learning space to have conversations where they are able to connect their personal experiences with academic content. This workshop introduces a teaching method for holding engaging conversations using provocative quotes, claims, counterclaims and essential questions-- and shows how to apply these conversations within a social studies curriculum.

Participants leave this workshop with a scalable go-to routine AND the practical tools for starting and managing a conversation using a famous quote from civil rights activist Audre Lorde- “Your silence will not protect you.”

Primary sources expose students to multiple perspectives on important topics and issues of the past and present, as well as help students develop critical inquiry skills. This interactive session will introduce teachers to a variety of source analysis tools and the ways they can support their instruction.

Kids as Curators

Presenters: Kate Van Haren, Pittsville Public Schools & WCSS Board Member; Toni Fink, Milwaukee Public Schools Empower students with primary-source skills! Learn and practice strategies with non-text-based sources to engage diverse learners, including urban, rural, EL, and immersion students in digital and non-digital formats. Participants will interact with culturally relevant primary sources. A specific focus will be placed on sources that do not require high proficiency of English language reading ability.

Activities include establishing an artifact museum with actual artifacts in the presenter space. Participants will document their artifact using a manifest similar to what curators use in museums. In tour groups, participants will visit a presenter-created online museum..

Different exhibits will feature websites of available places to find resources for classroom primary sources including the Library of Congress, state historical societies, and museums. Research is based on the work of the Inquiry in the Upper Midwest project by the Minnesota History Society and the book Digitally Supported Disciplinary Literacy for Diverse K-5 Classrooms (2020)

1:00pm-2:50pm (Extended Length Workshop Session) Teaching on Genocide and the Youth-Led Democracy Movement in Myanmar Presenter: Dr. Mary McCoy, UW-Madison This presentation will offer a frame for teaching on genocide, democracy, and repression in Myanmar. It will explain the military’s genocidal campaign against the Rohingya, Facebook’s role, and what happened to Aung San Suu Kyi, who ignored the genocide and defended the military against international charges. Finally, it will provide an insider perspective on the youth movement that erupted against the February 2021 coup, jailing Aung San Suu Kyi and commencing a horrific crackdown. It will conclude with optimism as a new generation, Gen Z, rises up to reclaim the future, expressing solidarity with the Rohingya and all minorities and determined to restore democracy.

Two UW-Madison School of Education grad students will also present a K-12 curriculum project using letters to American students from Burmese students on facing the crackdown and loss of democracy. One is Burmese and will answer questions about Myanmar, her life, and the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).

Taking informed action: Doing Democracy in the Classroom

Presenter: Dr. Dean Vesperman, UW-River Falls The Wisconsin state standards, NCSS C3 Framework, and the inquiry design model all promote that students need to know how to take informed action. Taking informed action prepares students for active citizenship in the classroom, school, community, society, and nation.

This interactive presentation for secondary teachers will demonstrate various methods that students can take informed action both inside and outside the classroom. We will cover how students can create surveys, write op-eds and news articles, generate letters to legislators, create public service announcements, posters, develop social media pages, conduct interviews, attend public meetings, and so much more. Key presentations will focus on creating surveys for students to conduct, write letters to the editor, create social media posts about what student have learned, create video public service announcements, and historical monologues. We will then discuss with participants the four types of taking informed action, be informed, be engaged, be a leader, and be the change. This will include working in small groups to explore how teachers can have students take informed action.

From ‘Primitive’ Refugees to Olympic Gold Medalist: A History of Hmong Americans

Presenter: Dr. Nengher Vang, Associate Professor, History Department, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater “What is Hmong?” “Who are the Hmong people?” Questions such as these were frequently asked on mainstream social media after Hmong-American gymnast Sunisa Lee won gold in the Tokyo Olympics gymnastics all-around competition in July 2021. More than 50,000 of the 300,000 Hmong in the United States live in Wisconsin alone, and many of these Hmong Wisconsinites have called Wisconsin “home” ever since their initial resettlement in the state in the mid-1970s. Yet, many educators, policymakers, and individuals in Wisconsin still have not heard of or know much about them. This session is designed to provide an overview of Hmong American history with an emphasis on their involvement in America’s secret war in Laos in the 1960s and the multiple impacts of that war on their lives. It highlights the ongoing struggles as well as the incredible accomplishments of Hmong refugees/Americans since their arrival in the United States in 1975.
