Featured Speakers Matt Miller- Matt Miller is an educator, blogger and presenter from West Central Indiana. He has infused technology and innovative teaching methods in his classes for more than 10 years. He is the author of the book Ditch That Textbook: Free Your Teaching and Revolutionize Your Classroom and writes at the Ditch That Textbook blog about using technology and creative ideas in teaching. He is a Google Certified Innovator (Austin ’14), a PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator, a Bammy! Awards nominee, and winner of the WTHI-TV Golden Apple Award.

After trying to do the traditional “teach by the textbook” for a few years, he launched into a textbook-less path where learning activities were often custom-produced for his students as well as infused with technology. He likes the results a lot, and his students do, too.

Matt has presented to thousands of teachers at dozens of workshops on a number of topics related to educational technology, world language instruction and more. He combines a conversational, engaging speaking style with loads of resources, leaving teachers equipped and inspired to move forward.

Dr. Stephen Knott Stephen F. Knott is a professor of national security affairs at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Prior to accepting his position at the War College, Knott co-chaired the Presidential Oral History Program at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. His books include: Alexander Hamilton and the Persistence of Myth; Secret and Sanctioned: Covert Operations and the American Presidency; Washington and Hamilton: The Alliance That Forged America; and The Lost Soul of the American Presidency. Professor Knott was designated a National Hamilton Scholar in January, 2017, by the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society for his outstanding scholarship, research, and writing on Alexander Hamilton.

Quinn Rollins Quinn Rollins has been a social studies teacher in Granite School District in Salt Lake City since 2004. Whether teaching children or adults, he believes in engaging students with humor, pop culture, and new perspectives. His 2016 book "Play Like a Pirate: Engage Students with Toys, Games, and Comics" was published by Dave Burgess Consulting. He's worked with the education programs for the University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University - Idaho, and Westminster College of Salt Lake City. Quinn has served as master teacher and mentor for a Teaching American History Grant, and for a National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History Workshop in Chicago, Illinois. He received the Utah Council for the Social Studies Secondary Teacher of the Year award in 2011, and the "Utah's Best of the West" award at the National Council for the Social Studies conference in 2015. He currently serves as the social studies curriculum specialist for Granite School District, and has presented at the national ASCD, Title I, AMLE, NCSS, and NCHE conferences.

Michael Larson Micheal J. Larson is a teacher in the School District of Menomonie Area in Menomonie Wisconsin. His interest in Henry F. Young began in the early 1980s while working on an undergraduate historiography paper. Mr. Larson is actively involved in many organizations including the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies (Executive Board Member), and National Council for the Social Studies. Active in local veteran affairs, he has facilitated the Annual Veterans Day Program at both Menomonie and Necedah High School since 1989.

Larson has attended many institutes to include the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, National Endowment for the Humanities, the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge, and for the 2017-18 school year, Micheal was a Life Guard Fellow at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. He published three articles in Teaching Lincoln: Legacies and Classroom Strategies (2013).

Karen Korematsu Karen Korematsu is the Founder and Executive Director of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute and the daughter of the late civil rights icon, Fred Korematsu. Since her father’s passing in 2005, Karen has carried on his legacy as a public speaker, educator and civil rights advocate. She shares her father’s passion for social justice and education and in 2009 established the Fred T. Korematsu Institute to advance racial equity, social justice and human rights for all. The Institute’s work has expanded from K-12 civic education to promoting public civic engagement and participation. Karen crisscrosses the country speaking to audiences from Kindergarten to Judges and inspiring and promoting Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution of January 30.

Karen’s work extends to advocating civil liberties for all communities and addresses current issues that draws upon lessons of the past. She has presented to Teachers College Columbia University, NY, New York and since 2012, the National and State Councils for the Social Studies and was Co-chair of the Annual National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Conference, 2017.

Tia Nelson Tia is internationally recognized as a tireless champion for environmental stewardship and climate change education. She spent 17 years with The Nature Conservancy in government relations, as a policy advisor for Latin America, and later as the first director of the Global Climate Change Initiative. For this work, she received the EPA’s Climate Protection Award in 2000. Tia returned home to Wisconsin to serve as Executive Secretary to the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, which included a gubernatorial appointment as co-chair of Wisconsin’s Task Force on Global Warming. She directs Outrider Foundation’s climate program.

The Making and Meaning of Dear Delia in the Classroom

Presenter: Michael Larson Dear Delia chronicles the Civil War letters of Captain Henry F. Young to his wife Delia, and her father, Jared Warner. Young’s regiment, the Seventh Wisconsin Infantry, was part of the famed Iron Brigade during the war. The letters cover innumerable themes related to Young’s military service including his view on slavery, African American soldiers, military leadership, and the hardships endured by the common soldier during the war.

Larson will demonstrate how to use Young's letters (as a primary resource) in the classroom through an analysis of several passages of the book.

Teaching Difficult History through Stories & Places: A Virtual Visit to Monticello

Hamilton and Washington

Presenter: Dr. Stephen Knott, Historian This talk will examine the most important collaboration in American history – the unlikely alliance between a wealthy Virginia planter and a brash immigrant from the Caribbean who went on to establish a “new order for the ages.” George Washington and Alexander Hamilton fought for the better part of twenty-five years to secure the American experiment in the face of bitter partisan opposition at home and determined enemies abroad. What makes Washington and Hamilton unique from other founding collaborations was that their bond was forged in the crucible of the Revolutionary War. This collaboration was vital to winning that war, adopting the Constitution, and creating the institutions necessary to secure liberty at home and respect abroad.

The unlikely partnership of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, and the brief Federalist moment they presided over, allowed the United States to build the institutions that launched the United States on a path to becoming a superpower. But perhaps more importantly, the two men devoted themselves to convincing their fellow citizens, as Hamilton, put it in a letter to Washington in April, 1783, to “think continentally.” If George Washington was the “indispensable man” of the American founding, then Washington and Hamilton’s collaboration was the “indispensable alliance” that determined the outcome of the founding and the creation of the United States of America.

Strategies for Integrating Economics into American History Courses

Presenter: Andrea Caceres- Santamaria Extended Session: Economics has been the motivation and impact behind many moments in America’s history. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis has written lesson plans using primary resources and active learning to engage students in learning about the economics behind our history. Students analyze economic data, role-play, and apply their knowledge to create economic models.

Historical events such as the Great Depression, Hamilton’s National Bank, and The United States in WWII are three of the historical topics covered in this session to highlight the lessons written on each topic. However, when framed as series of interwoven problems and investigations of competing or complementary narratives, history courses can become usable, engaging, and dynamic experiences for teachers and students alike. Sunday Afternoon Schedule “The Things They Carried”; Teaching Vietnam

Presenters: Carolee Blegen, Emily Transburg Through a written narrative we can understand the Vietnam War and other historical people, events, or subjects. This interactive presentation will allow for participants to become engaged in active discussion on using historical fiction to examine the Vietnam War. This high school history unit built around “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien has students examining the text using claimevidence-reasoning reading strategy. This process allows for students to make claims, create citations, and justify their explanations in relation to the historical fiction. To differentiate for diverse learners modified reading guides, text-to-speech, and immersive readers can be offered for those in need of that type of accommodation. The melding of historical fiction with an exploration of the Vietnam War, deepens students understanding of this seminal historical event. The unit concludes with a Tic-Tac-Toe project centering on “The Things They Carried.” The project allows students numerous ways to demonstrate growth. Dots, Dragons & Dreams: Using literature, compassion, connections and creativity to empower global learning & ignite informed action

Presenter: Susan Geidner From simple commitments to global projects-every student, regardless of age, can make a difference and make the world a better place through words, thoughts and actions. Participants will learn the wide range effect of taking informed action.

Learn how a group of kindergartners and a camel inspired a project to build a library in Kim Phuc's (well known as the "girl in the Picture") hometown of Trang Bang, Vietnam. Perhaps even more powerful than the physical library being built, are the ongoing lessons being learned, the connections being formed, and the educational bridges being forged throughout the journey. From this session you will walk away with strategies, ideas, opportunities, success stories, and examples of student impact. Additionally we will demonstrate how informed action can easily and successfully be student led and integrated across the curriculum. Sunday Afternoon Schedule Status Update: Teaching about Puerto Rico in Secondary Social Studies

Presenter: Gerardo Aponte-Safe Over 3.1 million U.S. citizens reside in the island of Puerto Rico, and over 5.4 million people in the U.S. have Puerto Rican ancestry; yet, social studies curriculum is often silent on Puerto Rican issues beyond the results of the Spanish-American War. Even the fact that Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917 escapes most people in the U.S. The 122-year relationship between the U.S. and Puerto Rico has been a long and complicated story of colonialism. In its most recent chapter, a socio-political financial crisis as well as the impact and aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017 have led to dramatic migration of Puerto Ricans to the U.S. What does the political status of Puerto Rico reveal about U.S. democracy? This session will provide resources and teaching ideas to guide high school students in understanding and discussing the political relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. gaponte@uwlax.edu

Controversy and civic engagement: Becoming aware of critical issues

Presenters: Dean Vesperman, Mary Wright, Emily Transburg, Carolee Biegen How do we get students to explore controversial topics in a way that allows them to practice the essential skills of citizenship?

Our presentation will help teachers explore how to use role play (legislative hearing) and structured academic controversies (SAC) to examine contentious issues of the past and present. These methods allow students to embrace core democratic values, become aware of critical issues and events that impact people at all levels of government, seek information from varied sources and perspectives, practice effective public decision-making, and collaborate with others as they enact participation in civic and community life. We will use the controversial topic of Native American reparations to model how to create a legislative hearing and subsequent SAC as a pedagogy for teachers to examine as they consider how to construct their own lessons. Seas, Trees, and Economies: Economics and the Environment

This set of lessons for students in grades 6-8 are written to actively engage them in understanding the relationship between our natural environment and the economy. The simulations in the lessons provide students with the tools they need to recognize fundamental tradeoffs to explain how and why choices are made. Session 4 Breakouts Making Social Studies Happen in Elementary School

Presenters: Matthew McParker, Charlotte Roberts It is well-documented that social studies in elementary schools has been devalued to the point that it is rarely, if ever, taught as a distinct subject. The researchers explored preservice teachers’ conceptions of social studies so that they could gain a better understanding of how to help teachers prioritize social studies instruction in their classrooms. Preservice teachers saw social studies as focusing on history, human interactions, and current events. They saw the value and purpose as learning from the past, becoming active citizens, having perspective on world events, and people being interconnected. Some expressed concern about it being undervalued in elementary schools. We will share how we structured a course responding to the realities of these perceptions and challenges of implementation of social studies to create a path forward for providing structured integration. We will provide tools and ideas that teachers can use to effectively incorporate social studies into their classrooms. mmcparker@uwlax.edu

American Indian Studies in Wisconsin

Presenter: David O'Connor The session will explore and identify ways participants can deepen their understanding of American Indian Studies of Wisconsin (often referred to as Wisconsin Act 31) content through texts and digital resources. Interested participants will have an opportunity to deeper their understandings of and explore ideas for implementing American Indian Studies content into their teaching and learning while being able to identify and explore various selected text and digital resources. Information that will be shared during the session will include, but not limited to information about Wisconsin American Indian nation’s histories, treaties, sovereignty, and cultures. Integrating Social Studies and Literature

Presenter: Jill Schmoldt There is an increasing amount of content that must be taught within the school day. This can present daily challenges for elementary teachers striving to help students master social studies standards in a rich, meaningful ways. This presentation will teach participants how to integrate key social studies standards using current best practices in literacy. Examples will include, shared reading, independent reading, shared writing, and whole class conversation. We will also discuss ways to integrate technology and student choice allowing students a rich learning experience. The instructor is a 23 year veteran elementary teacher who is also Nationally Board Certified in Literacy and has a passion for social studies. She is also a former elementary literacy coach who is now applying that knowledge within her first grade classroom. Learners will leave the session ready to try some new literacy strategies the very next day.

Engaging with a variety of primary, scholarly and secondary sources, high school US History students learn to write evidence-based biographies of little known (or even unknown) Civil War figures during one month of the War. Debate for Better Discourse to Look Forward on Current Issues and Solutions

Presenters: Jacobi Adam, Dr. J. Scott Baker This session will immerse educators (primarily grades 6-12) in classroom debate activities and drills/games to help students process current events as they discern fact from so-called fake news, and engage in higher-order thinking while cultivating critical listening.

Various formats of interscholastic debate will be shared, and how those can be implemented in the classroom and/or as extracurricular teams. Despite a rich heritage in debate, Wisconsin has dwindled to fewer than 5% of middle and high schools participating in interscholastic debate, compared to two-thirds participating in interscholastic speech (forensics). In recent years, more accessible formats of debate have made it much easier for busy teachers and students to take on the activity without undue burdens on their time. The presentation will be facilitated by consultants with the Harvard Debate Council, one of whom is a board member of the National Speech & Debate Association. adam@whsfa.org

The older Democratic Party and the new Knownothings reacted to the rising power of the Republicans and the perceived tidal wave of immigration, in this case, the Germans (the “48ers”). Reading, more than ever, has become an essential component of social studies learning. This leads to questions such as, how do we provide students with grade-level content if they do not read at grade level? How do we find enough text aligned to what we are teaching? What if my core social studies resource doesn’t provide enough material for my students to respond to inquiries?

Middle East Presenter: Andrew Askuvich This lesson examines some of the major environmental challenges in the Middle East, particularly around water resources, and the ways that Israelis, Jordanians, and Palestinians are cooperating to meet these challenges. Participants will develop pedagogic content knowledge about environmental challenges in the Middle East; regional cooperation among Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority to meet these challenges; and environmental cooperation as a path to peaceful coexistence. Participants will also experience and apply critical pedagogy around social and environmental activism in the Middle East by focusing on three case studies. Unintended Consequences: Cultivating empathy through instruction. With every decision there are intended consequences, but how do we predict those that are unintended?

History is not a random chain of events. Decisions made by common people and those in power have a ripple effect; we explore intended and unintended consequences in our history. We invite participants to look at history through a different lens as we introduce educators to the idea of "forethought" history. Participants engage in strategies for promoting critical thought, healthy debate and discussion among peers. We also explore image analysis to discern public opinion surrounding events through political cartoons. AWARDS INFORMATION Global Citizen Award--Team Rubicon Jake Wood and William McNulty Team Rubicon began when Jake Wood, William McNulty and a small group of other like minded military veterans saw the devastating impact of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and decided they wanted to help. They worked through friends and family to gather medical supplies and went to help. After that experience, they realized that their experiences as veterans put them in a unique position to be able to help areas in times of crisis and Team Rubicon was founded. Team Rubicon has two major goals: to help in situations where there may be an inadequate disaster response based on a variety of factors and to help reintegrate veterans into civilian life by providing them opportunities where their experiences and training can make them more effective in service to others. Team Rubicon has performed over 100 missions and worked a wide variety or domestic and international natural disasters.

Elementary Teacher of the Year--Kate Van Haren “He who teaches, learns.” Kate heard this proverb while learning and designing lessons in Ethiopia during the summer of 2018. For Kate, the ability to teach and to learn are inseparable. She has been fortunate to travel, teach, and learn in many different places around the world. Some of her unique experiences include teaching Lake Superior history from the back of a Voyageur Canoe, designing an outdoor learning class as a Peace Corps volunteer in Macedonia, sharing sustainable agriculture techniques on a farm located in the Yakama reservation, and playing English verbs and adjectives Bingo with students across rural Poland.

Each of these experiences has enhanced Kate’s own knowledge and teaching ability as she prepares her Pittsville 4th and 5th graders to be local and global leaders in their communities. In addition to finding creative and engaging methods to incorporate academic standards in curriculum, her favorite teaching moments are when students are able to make personal connections to their own cultures with communities of the past and present.

Kate models how to be a community leader by serving on various leadership committees within her school leads several afterschool activities and serves on the Pittsville Area Community Theater Board of Directors. Her travel and teaching experiences in traditional and unconventional classrooms have provided Kate with unique perspectives as she works with educators across the United States to design a curriculum that addresses the use of primary sources in elementary classrooms, teaches issues of human rights, and integrates sustainability standards into social studies topics. Through her life experiences, Kate tries to teach all of her students that learning is integral to being a leader, and happens in every aspect of living.

Middle School Teacher of the Year--Derek Oppelt This year’s WCSS Middle School Teacher of the Year is Derek Oppelt, a 6th grade social studies teacher. He has taught his entire 14 year career teaching at Onalaska Middle School. He believes strongly in having students become a part of history through reenactments and role playing activities that engage students in essential standards, such as students deciding how to allocate funds in the republic system of ancient Rome or putting on mock trials of ancient leaders like Genghis Khan. At Onalaska Middle School, he is known for doing whatever it takes to help kids succeed and collaborating with his colleagues to create exciting ways for kids to show high levels of learning. Most of all, Derek is proud of his two young sons growing into great people and his amazing wife, also a teacher known for inspiring others.

AWARDS INFORMATION High School Teacher of the Year--Elayna Clark Elayna Clark is in her 15th year teaching at Wausau West High School. She currently teaches AP Psychology and World History. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from UW Milwaukee in 2004 and her Master’s Degree in Teaching History in 2010. Elayna became a Nationally Board Certified teacher in Social Studies-History in 2018. She is highly involved in her school community and has served as a track and cross country coach, key club adviser, PBIS committee member, and Tech Mentor in the past. Currently, she is the Department Chair, Homecoming Adviser, Senior Walk Coordinator, WEAF Scholarship Committee member, and a district Professional Development teacher. Elayna has also had several professional development travel grant opportunities, including an NEH fellowship to South Africa and a Gilder Lehrman Fellowship to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City. She feels so lucky to be supported by the best colleagues, wonderful parents and extended family. Most importantly, she has the love and support of her amazing husband, and fellow teacher, Paul and their two young children: Henry (6) and Penelope (4). She loves spending time with her family & friends, traveling the world, working out, reading, and drawing.

Civil Rights/Liberties Award--Erich Utrie Erich Utrie is in his 26th year teaching 8th grade social studies at Jefferson Middle School in Jefferson, Wisconsin. Like most teachers, Erich wears many different "hats" in his building and also works part-time for the JEDI Virtual School facilitating American History and AP U.S. History courses. Erich's love for civics, history and economics is evidenced by his involvement with the iCivics Educator Network, EconomicsWisconsin Educator Advisory Council and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Simulations, role-playing and active decision-making are at the center of civics instruction in Erich's classroom. Students face the challenges of passing bills through Congress, running presidential campaigns, arguing cases in front of the Supreme Court and participating in multiple mock trials. For more than a decade, Erich has worked with local judges, lawyers and other court officials to facilitate a job shadowing experience for select 8th grade students at the local courthouse.

Erich is also a practitioner of "content cross-pollination" in the area of staff development. While serving as a Peer Facilitator at the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute or presenting at an EconomicsWisconsin conference, Erich finds a way to promote iCivics and other great resources to his colleagues. A representative democracy, market economy and learning all depend on the free exchange of ideas for mutual enrichment!

AWARDS INFORMATION SnavelyMichalko Award-- Pam Kaiser Pam Kaiser has been teaching Social Studies in the state of WI for 30 years!

Pam graduated from UW-Oshkosh with a bachelor’s degree in Broadfield Social Sciences and a minor in Political Science & Coaching. She also has her Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Teacher Leadership. She teaches in the Osceola School District at the high school, teaching AP Psych, General Psych, Civics & World Wars. She also stays busy coaching Boys & Girls Golf as well as advising her History Club, the Capitals.

Pam was appointed to the WCSS Board of Directors in 1998 and began working with Membership at that time. She became the Membership Director in 2008.

She feels blessed to work with awesome people on the Board as well as each of you here today. We are all volunteers on the WCSS Board of Directors, and if you have an interest in participating, please reach out to anyone on the WCSS Board.

Pam completed her National Board for Professional Teaching Standards: Adolescence and Young Adulthood/Social Studies-History in 2005, then renewed it again in 2016. She has also studied at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum through the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators. Connecting to High School Geography Standards through Forests of the World

Session 6

Presenter: Nicole Filizetti Wisconsin’s high school Geography standards ask students to evaluate the relationship between humans and the environment, and to look at population patterns and analyze changes over time. These concepts can be taught in a relevant and meaningful way by looking at the world’s forest resources. Participants in this session will get a hands-on introduction to Project Learning Tree’s “Global Connections: Forests of the World” curriculum, focusing on lessons that have connections to the Wisconsin Standards for Social Studies for high school Geography. We will also briefly discuss how these lessons, and geography students’ study of place, helps social studies classrooms connect with the Wisconsin Standards for Environmental Literacy and Sustainability. The American Dream: Bringing History to Life Through Roleplaying

Presenter: Zaynab Baalbaki Discover activities to help students examine their role as global citizens, especially as it relates to issues of environmental sustainability and the sustainability of healthy, educated communities. Engage in simulation games, concept mapping and data analysis to build awareness of population and resource use trends, and see how to fit these activities you’re your curricula for a range of social studies disciplines (geography, history, economics and civics). Skill-building that cuts across the curriculum – critical thinking, problem solving, articulating ideas and using new technology for research and modeling – will be addressed in the presented activities. Objects from around the world allow students to experience life around the globe with their hands. How can we best use cultural objects to enhance our teaching practice? In this hands-on session, we will explore ideas for using cultural objects in classrooms at all levels using examples from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Discovery Box program. Discovery Boxes are curated collections of cultural items paired with lesson plans and multi-media materials assembled by area-studies experts. Boxes include cultural objects, textiles, books, music, and/or films. Discovery Boxes explore themes related to cutting-edge research taking place on campus, offering Wisconsin teachers a current perspective on international affairs. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to leverage impactful, cost-free learning tools from PBS and PBS Wisconsin.

We will explore: Jo Wilder and the Capitol Case, a Wisconsin historical inquiry adventure game where students read, gather information and use evidence to draw conclusions and make arguments in support of their conclusions, and Wisconsin Biographies, a robust collection of media to enrich the social studies and literacy curriculum, using the stories of notable figures in Wisconsin history.

Authentic Assessments: A Pivotal Guide Through SBG & The New WI Social Studies Standards

Presenters: Kevin Hyde, Chris Schalewski Educators from Badger Middle School, located in the West Bend School District, have spent the last few years unpacking and becoming experts in the new Wisconsin Social Studies Standards, and have now deployed those standards in a Standards-Based grading environment. This session will allow teachers to get hands-on experience through a station approach of looking at authentic student work, reviewing assessment that lay the necessary foundation for our future adult citizens, while having discourse with colleagues around the state about what “proficiency” looks like. Yet, just like teaching your students every day, there is such fulfillment by taking on a student-teacher and watching them grow to be an amazing educator. Using the 1860 Census Report to Learn about a Missouri Community on the Eve of the Civil War

Presenter: Scott Scheuerell The presenter describes how high school history students can use census reports to learn about a community’s past. In the presentation, there will be a description of how students used an 1860 census report from Warrensburg, MO to learn about the population demographics of the community in Johnson County, MO prior to Quantrill’s Raid in Lawrence, KS. Students were engaged in a great deal of historical thinking to consider the diversity of its citizens. There were residents from Northern states, Southern states, foreign-born, and a few slaves. Many different occupations were found in the census and most of the population was aged 25 and under. Similar investigations can be conducted of communities across the state of Wisconsin and nation prior to the Civil War using census reports in the classroom. scott.scheuerell@loras.edu

Teaching Migration: A Global and Local Issue

Presenter: Hanadi Shatara This presentation discusses the teaching of migration and how it is a global and local phenomenon. Participants will receive lessons that discuss German migration in Wisconsin and US history, as well as the migration patterns in Germany and in the United States today. This interactive presentation will also allow attendees to practice one of the strategies of mapping migration patterns. Lastly, participants will learn about the Transatlantic Outreach Program, an organization that sponsors teachers to learn about Germany's history and culture.

Rethinking Social Studies

Presenter: Mark Grunske This session will challenge you to think outside the box by reimagining your social studies courses by building them around essential and compelling questions. This presentation will argue for abandoning the chronology of history courses and the traditional structure of classes such as government and economics. Imagine teaching units such as “Which is mightier, the pen or the sword”, “Do cross cultural interactions bring more positive or negative consequences”, “Are the current economic and social inequalities more similar or different to those in America’s past?”, “Is the American political and economic system just?” or “Rank the social movements from most to least successful” Units such as these lead to increased student engagement, are intentionally built to require students to think at deeper levels and more easily align with modern skill based standards. mark@grunske.com

Presenter: Jessica Brogley Jessica Brogley is a former K-12 technology integration specialist and currently serves as a teacher of educational technology in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin — Platteville. Besides being a Google Certified Innovator, Instructor, and Streetview Trusted Photographer, she’s also a Level 8 Google Local Guide. She has over 1800 photos with over 7 million views on Google Maps.

Now, she’s teaching kids why being an active user of Google Maps is amazing and how that increases technology skills, creativity, consumer awareness, geography skills, and community pride. Jessica will take you through the scaffolding of introducing Google Maps skills to students and provide you with a list of resources and tools for later use.
