Parents, Don’t Forget to Have Fun Too! Time to DINEosaurus: A Recipe Book for Little COOKasauruses gets children excited about cooking from the youngest learners through independent preteen aspiring chefs. Learning engagement opportunities featured in this cookbook are number and letter recognition, early math concepts, fine motor skill development, listening comprehension, social skills, sight-word and reading development, nutrition awareness, chemistry, and earth science — just to name a few. This recipe book also provides opportunities to bond with friends and family members.

Just have fun! That’s the moto of Archie, the COOKasaurus. When children are having fun, they are learning from the world around them and more likely to want to learn more.

12 Time To DINEosaurus

The key to encouraging a positive learning environment is to make it fun! Little learners love to help. Include them in gathering the ingredients and utensils. They may need help with measuring, but will enjoy pouring the ingredients in. Older learners crave practicing independence. As they grow, start incorporating more independent skills into their repertoire. They’ll be cooking by themselves in no time!

Do you have a picky eater in your household? Teaching them to be a COOKasaurus can encourage healthy eating habits. Allowing children to have control over their food choices empowers them to make healthy decisions. Children may also be more likely to try new foods and eat healthier when they pick the recipe and either help to prepare, or as their cooking skills develop, prepare the meal independently.

Good COOKasaurus Habits One of the most important positive aspects of working in the kitchen a parent can encourage is learning to work in steps and best practices. As you work with your child and as your child begins to work on their own, they will begin to develop their own process that works best for them. In the meantime, use the structure below as a guide to building good kitchen habits that are sure to foster a successful and encouraging experience.

1. Read the recipe ingredients and directions together, or allow older learners to read independently.

2. Wash your hands.

3. Fill the sink with hot soapy water in preparation for utensil clean-up.

4. Gather all essential ingredients as well as measuring and cooking supplies.

5. Clean as you go. Be mindful about replacing ingredients that need to be stored at cooler temperatures. As you finish with an ingredient, return it from where it was gathered from. While mixtures are resting, cooking or baking, clean utensils that are no longer needed with hot soapy water.

This will make overall clean-up much more enjoyable when the recipe and meal is complete.

Be mindful of mixtures on the stove that may need stirring.

6. Set the table. This is another task children love to help with.

My kids like to pretend we’re in a “fancy restaurant.” We play music and get out the place mats and fancy napkins.

7. Serve the meal and enjoy!

My girls love to pretend they are the servers in the “fancy restaurant.”

8. When the meal is complete, clean up the dishes from the table and any remaining dishes from meal preparation. This encourages independence as well as a positive environment to begin their next recipe adventure.

Number & Letter Recognition Each recipe is associated with a letter and organized in alphabetic order.

Suggest to your child to verbalize the letter when he or she recognizes it.

As children develop, they can begin to point to, and say out-loud, the other letters in the recipe names. Older learners can begin to recognize sightwords shown in bold-red within the directions listing of each recipe.

Early number recognition (1-10) is featured in the ingredients listing. Use the contents page to find which page number a the desired recipe is featured on. Make an activity for your child to find the matching page number to enhance advanced number recognition.

Early Math Concepts For younger learners, point to and count each ingredient symbol in the ingredients section. Then count as you and your child include the ingredients in the mixture. For older learners, have them independently count the symbols and as they add the ingredients. [see fig. 1]

Discussing the number of sides and angles of each shape is a good beginning ingredient in the recipe for successful math techniques development. Then create a dialog about what other objects they observe that are similar to the pictured shapes on each recipe.

Shape recognition is a bench mark in math skill development. Each meal type is broken down into categories associated with a shape:

For younger learners, let them help measure ingredients with you or even let them do it themselves. Messes add yet another fun component to the process. Pouring and mixing ingredients into the bowl will encourage advanced fine motor skill development.

Listening Comprehension Begin by reading the ingredients and recipe out loud. Then ask them to repeat back which items are needed. For older learners, encourage them to repeat back the steps and ingredients in order. The steps of the recipe will further develop following simple instructions and listening comprehension. Begin step-by-step with younger learners and gradually add lengthier steps as the child develops their listening comprehension skills.

Social Skills When you are working with your learner in the kitchen you can encourage positive social skills by using words like “please,” “thank you,” and “great work,” whenever possible. Cooking together provides a great opportunity for those positive social interactions to be encouraged reciprocally. Soon they will use these necessary social skills in their own interactions.

Good Nutritional Habits Guidance Kids need good nutrition to grow and enhance optimal brain development.

It’s also important to encourage them to make good nutritional decisions.

Each recipe is marked with a food group icon. Encourage the children in your life to make good nutritional choices. Adding the component of fun to the mix will make it that much easier. Some ideas to consider are: cut carrot cross-sections into dinosaur footprints; layer drinks by mixing beverages with varying sugar levels (pour the highest sugar contents first) and pretend they are layers to prehistoric sludge pools; Reference the food pyramid chart for a visual reminder of the approximate recommended amount of servings per food group for your child’s daily nutritional intake. [see fig. 2]

INGREDIENTS: 4 CUPS fresh or thawed frozen broccoli 2 Tbs. Tbs oil DIRECTIONS: 1. Toss broccoli in olive oil 2. Spread a single layer of broccoli over a cookie sheet or large baking pan.

2 tsp. dill

1 tsp. sea salt 2 tsp. basil

3. Sprinkle with sea salt, dill, pepper and basil.

4. Bake in oven at 425° for 40 minutes.

The Broccoliosaurus was inspired by a real herbivorous dinosaur, known as the Brachylophosaurus , that lived during Late Cretaceous period over 88 million years ago.

An herbivore is an animal that only eats plants, such as the delicious broccoli you are about to enjoy!

INGREDIENTS: 1 8oz 8 oz Package baby carrots 2 Tbs. Tbs oil DIRECTIONS: 1. Toss baby carrots in olive oil 2. Spread a single layer of baby carrots over a cookie sheet or large baking pan.

1 tsp. sea salt 2 tsp. dill

2 tsp. basil

3. Sprinkle with sea salt, dill, pepper and basil.

4. Bake in oven at 425° for 40 minutes.

The Dilophosaurus was a fast-moving meat-eating dinosaur that lived 190 million years ago during the Early Jurasic period located in what is now the USA. It had a kink in it’s upper jaw that is similar to a crocodiles.

SERVES: 4

PREP TIME: 5 MIN.

COOK TIME: 12 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: 1 Package refrigerated crescent roll dough 8 Tbsp.

Tbsp pasta sauce DIRECTIONS: 1. Unroll pre-packaged refrigerated crescent roll, keeping the triangles.

2.

On each triangle spread 1 Tbsp. pasta sauce near the shortest side.

3.

Place 2 pepperoni pieces on top of the sauce.

4. Sprinkle the pepperoni pieces with about 1 Tbsp. mozzarella cheese.

16 slices pepperoni 1 CUP shredded mozzarella cheese

5. Roll the triangle the shortest side of the triangle toward the opposite point of the triangle.

4. Place on baking sheet allowing for 2 inches of space between each roll.

5. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top of the rolls.

5. Bake in oven at 375° for 12 minutes.

SERVES: 4

PREP TIME: 15 MIN.

COOK TIME: 15 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. cooked ground meat

8 leaves lettuce

8 Tbsp.

Tbsp shredded cheese

1 CUP diced tomatoes 1 CUP sour cream DIRECTIONS: 1. Have parents help cut the vegetables and cook the meat.

2. Heat taco shells in the microwave per package instructions.

NOTE: Hard or soft shells may be used.

3. Build each taco with each persons favorite toppings.

1 sliced avacado

1 CUP salsa

8 taco shells

4. If building a soft-shell taco,pile toppings in a rectangle across the middle of the shell making a rectangle. Then roll from one end of the circle to the other creating a cylinder shape.

The Tacosaurus was inspired by the real Psittacosaurus that lived during the Early Cretaceous period and was actually quite small, only about 6.5 feet long, compared to its larger dino friends.
