Supporting Success

Libraries and Study Centre There are libraries at Kings Road (1st floor of tower block) and Goschen (1st floor of C block). They are well-equipped, modern, friendly environments that offer a wide range of print and non-print materials. Both libraries have plenty of study space, including provision for silent study and group work. PCs are available for accessing e-books, e-journals, the internet etc. Many of these e-resources may also be accessed from a home computer. Some digital equipment (e.g. Netbooks) is also available for loan to staff. Further PCs are available in the Study Centre at Goschen, on the floor above the library. A teaching room with computers is also provided in the Innovation suite at Kings Road and can be booked in advance through MyPC, or at the library counter. You will find experienced and qualified staff in all four locations to help with your enquiries. For further information please contact: ext 5368

Study Support

Our librarians provide support to teaching and learning within the College, while coordinating across all faculties and meeting curriculum specifications. Our College (HE) or Tutor (FE) Librarian can train you (and your students) to develop your information skills, as well as provide research skills sessions covering topics such as: plagiarism, referencing, effective searching/evaluation of the internet and the use of Subject Gateways (providing approved materials that support academic integrity and are also suitable for use in assignments). Library inductions/information sessions are available to new and extant staff, on either an individual or group basis. Please become familiar with the library catalogue and send us your suggestions or requests for new stock items. Our Learning Resources Moodle pages (accessible via the Student Intranet) also contain guides on the use of InfoTrac, e-journals, e-books, web and subject guides. For further information please contact: ext 5378

Reading Lists Reading lists are vital for all students, whether in FE or HE, studying on long or short courses. Our mission is to liaise with teaching staff in order to make these lists accurate, relevant, of appropriate level/ size and to provide a sufficient number of copies (electronic where possible) in order to satisfy demand. We are not just interested in the textbook approach but also in ‘wider reading’, which can enrich the learning experience and lead to higher grades. Share your reading lists with our Reading List Assistant who can advise you on new editions of core titles and suggest new items. For further information please contact: ext 5378

Whether you are producing short-run course booklets, a one-off poster, Moodle film or a full range of promotional materials, the MAPP team will ensure that it forms part of a consistent, coordinated approach to communication, which follows the College branding and maintains DDA compliance. It also provides self-service copiers on all College sites. For MAPP services at Goschen, visit the Print Pod on the 2nd floor, C Block. For further information please contact: ext 5316

Off-air Recording We are pleased to offer off-air recording services and are licensed to record programmes from most Freeview channels. Selected by librarians, these are constantly being added to library stock to provide relevant and engaging resources that assist with course delivery, as well as for more general educational interest. Staff can request programmes for inclusion into library stock, or for their department. If a programme or series is required, which we do not have in our collection, we will endeavour to source it from elsewhere. We also offer a VHS-to-DVD transfer service (copyright permitting) and radio recording service. We are committed to providing a fast, efficient response to all queries and requests. For further information please contact: ext 5368

Digital Equipment Our Libraries can loan a range of digital equipment to staff to support curriculum needs and develop classroom teaching. This includes: Digital Cameras, Flip Videos, COWS (Computers on Wheels), Netbooks, Kindle e-readers, iPads and Optivote sets (an Electronic Voting System (EVS) which is used to support multi- choice quizzes on Moodle). The Technology-enabled Learning Implementation Team (TeLIT) can deliver and support equipment use if required. This collection will be regularly reviewed, so we welcome any feedback on how useful you find these items, as well suggestions for new items, as this will help us with evaluation when we are purchasing new equipment. Ask our staff about special equipment loans to students with disabilities, we may have an item that will help your student succeed. For further information please contact: ext 5378

Learning Technology Support The Technology-enabled Learning Implementation Team (TeLIT) supports the application and development of learner-facing technology. Ask the team for ideas, advice, structured training, workshops, clinics and practical support for any aspect of technology that enables and enhances learning: for example, using the Interactive Whiteboard, the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle), Optivote & digital equipment. The team is currently working through the 3-year action plan that accompanies the new (July 2011) Technologyenabled Learning Strategy (which may be accessed via the college intranet).
