Message from the President

“Imagine Rotary” is the 2022-23 presidential theme that RI President Jennifer Jones has coined and she is asking Rotary members to dream big and take action: “We all have dreams, but acting on them is a choice. Imagine a world that deserves our best, where we get up each day knowing that we can make a difference.”

Rotary International President Jennifer Jones imagines a Rotary where members act to make their dreams become reality and make the most of their club experiences. During her year, Jones will focus on four presidential initiatives that Imagine Rotary: advancing our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI); creating a welcoming club experience; empowering girls; and expanding our reach.

istrict Governor Mike Kennedy Sebalu in his inaugural messages has emphasized teamwork, “Together Everyone Achieves More”.

Amazing DG Mike explains that the Imagine Rotary Theme is like a blank cheque, leaving Rotarians to Imagine their actions this Rotary year and that he imagines rotary as an amazing organization made up of amazing people doing amazing things and achieving amazing results. It is from this notion that in District 9213, the word Amazing is tagged to all rotary themes and names, including “Amazing Presidents”.

The Club joined the rest of the Clubs in the District to begin the year with the Launch of the signature project of the District i.e Basic Education and Literacy Enhancement Programme (BELEP). The launch was actualized by the Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) Day activities which the Club celebrated at Dolphins International School, curtesy of our very own Rtn Derek Kyambadde. It was a memorable occasion where parents, Rotarians and pupils read books for one another symbolizing Imagine reading as a way of life theme. I would like to thank Rtn Derek and all the Rotarians who participated in the event in one way or another.

The Club finished strong in the last Rotary Year led by Change Maker President Priscilla Nakiboneka and certainly started strong this rotary year as well.

Club Administration Committee led by Chair Tony Galandi Kiire is poised to create a memorable club experience by ensuring effective and efficient club operations.

Membership Committee Chaired

by Boniface Azeirwe has led the way in constituting committee structures. I have no doubt that the committee will stimulate the club into increasing the number of club members which currently stands at 94 and our target is 106 by the end of the Rotary year.

Message from the President Our TRF Committee led by our beloved Olive Lumonya has amazingly started strong and has already registered a Rotarian in the Club for major donor recognition this rotary year, and this in none other than Rtn Harrison Mutikanga. I have no doubt that many others will follow in the course of the year.

I have already received numerous communications from our Youth Services Chair Juliet Rwatoro indicating an early engagement with the youth for mutual support in our humanitarian engagements.

Service Projects under the Chairmanship of Joseph Kizito Nsubuga has inherited a strong position in community projects and is enthusiastic in leading the Club to develop sustainable service projects. Rtn Dr. Jayne Nakato has led the way with an early submission of a school’s improvement proposal to the foundation for a global grant, this is in line with the District Signature project BELEP.

Our Amazing PR Chair has started the year by pulling off near impossible tasks amazingly.

You will recall that the Rotary Club of Kampala North joined the RC Kampala South in their installation fellowship on Monday 4th and I was surprised at the beautiful gift we presented to Kampala South in form of a memento, thanks to the last minute wit of Rtn Sharon and VP Charles Lubowa.

Indeed, in my one week of Presidency I have already met with progressive and useful engagements and experiences with all the club officers, Buddy Group Leaders and many Club members but unfortunately cannot narrate everything in this message.

Allow me to end by informing you that the District Governor’s visit to the Club will be on 15th August 2022. I would therefore like to call on all members to pay their dues as it is one of the requirements for the District Governor to visit.

Thank you friends for your Rotary Service as we Imagine the impact we will make as a team this amazing Rotary Year.

KANGA PROVERBS Pole pole ndiyo mwendo meaning “Slow and steady is the way to go”

N

ever rush for something. You might end up right where you began or losing out while others take your position and reach there before you do. I will tell you my story. In my earlier days, my primary school was looking for best athletes to take part in a sports gala. With confidence, I decided to participate in the rehersals. I was selected to run the 100m race with other girls.

We were at the starting point when the whisle blew. I took off with great speed knowing that I would reach the first. Hmmm…half way through the race I began to lose my breath which slowed my momentum. Before I knew it I failed to run and began gasping for breath. Meanwhile all other girls gained speed and reached way before me. I realized that the trick was never to rush, begin slow and gradually gain speed while you strategize for a win!

2022-23 President Jennifer Jones is eager to advance Rotary’s narrative

Jennifer is definitely an Energizer Bunny. She’s outgoing and very much a connector - Krayacich ennifer Jones, Rotary International’s first female president, is the perfect leader to spread the word about the good Rotary does in the world, and inspire its members to keep going.

Jones, 55, was born in Windsor, Ontario, and — save for a few post-college years working in the Turks and Caicos Islands and Manhattan — has lived there her whole life. The oldest of three children, she’d run lemonade stands to earn money to give to charity, and recalls organizing a carnival in her family’s yard to benefit kids with muscular dystrophy. “Growing up, my parents had given us wings to do service in our community,” she says. Today, her mom, dad, and one of her brothers and his wife

are Rotarians. Her other brother created a painting that inspired Jones’ presidential-theme ties and scarves.

Both Jones and Krayacich are originally from Windsor, but the two met in the Caribbean.

Burned out after finishing university and working in the newsroom at a radio station, Jones took time off and worked at a resort in the Caribbean, while Krayacich, a physician, had just finished his internship in Toronto and went to the islands to go scuba diving. They struck up a friendship, and when they both eventually moved back to Windsor, they started dating and got married shortly thereafter.

Jones started her own television production company when she was in her late 20s, wowing bank officials with her business plan, negotiating a lease, and investing in hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment.

“I’ve always wanted to carve my own path,” she says. “Sometimes that’s meant taking risks and making yourself open to new experiences.”

very month since I joined Rotary, I’ve looked forward to reading this magazine, especially the opening essay from our Rotary president. I’ll admit that as much as I appreciate a digital copy, I still revel in the tactile sensation of sitting down and leafing through the glossy pages.

As a communications professional, I have longed for the day that our stories were a regular part of mainstream media and that our flagship magazine might populate doctor’s offices, coffee shops, or anywhere else people sit, wait, and browse. It’s great that Rotary members are better informed about all we do, and wouldn’t it be that much better if more people knew our stories.

All this was top of mind as I thought about our plans for promoting Rotary worldwide in the upcoming year. Over the next 12 months, we are going to shine a light on projects that put Rotary service on display to the world, and we are going to do it strategically. Nick and I will focus on some of the highest impact, sustainable, and scalable Rotary projects from our areas of focus in what we call the Imagine Impact Tour.

We are inviting top-tier journalists, thought leaders, and influencers to use their channels to help us raise awareness by reaching people who want to serve but have not yet realized they can do it through Rotary.

But there was another important issue to consider — our carbon footprint. I take seriously Rotary’s emerging leadership position

on environmental issues. The example set by our members during the pandemic is fundamental to how we carve out our future.

That means we will harness digital technology to tell these stories — we will be tweeting, posting, and “going live” to anyone who will listen. We must consider our environment, and part of that means not always traveling but continuing to connect in meaningful ways as we have for the past two years.

Of course, we are social people, and we still need to be together.

We simply need to be more mindful of our decisions and think about how we get together just a little bit differently. For example, if we travel to visit a project, we will plan successive visits in neighboring areas.

So, what are your stories and who can help tell them? I hope you might consider your own Imagine Impact efforts — your story might be something you can promote just as easily on social media or during a Zoom call.

We all feel the impact that Rotary service and values have on us.

this is not about the primary one, even primary six cannot read.

Currently the emphasis is to make learners cram and pass exams but I have not seen any emphasis on reading, basic literacy.

You have heard that every region must start teaching children in their own languages, this is a good thing as long as children know how to read in their local languages, it enhances their way of understanding and learning. UPE is a good program but the majority of pupils in this program don’t know how to read,

As Rotary Club of Kampala North, we have come up with the program called Basic Education literacy Enhancement Program (BELEP) and we think we can use this project to push for basic education.

We believe we can make reading a way of life. To see children read as well as children seeing adults read and if it’s repetitive, our children will adopt the culture of reading. There is no knowledge that you can think of without reading,” Dr Isaac Okullo.

The Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular; FIRST; The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND; High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD; The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH; The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The tales of the 11th Presidential Installation of here is no better way to kick start the Imagine Rotary Year than by attending a Presidential Installation outside Uganda. I got an opportunity to represent the Rotary Club of Kampala North much as I am still a Guest at the 11Th Presidential Installation ceremony of the Rotaract Club of Kigali City that was held on July 2, 2022, at the Golf Eden Hotel Kibuye - Rwanda.

virtually handed over the Presidency with the exchange of the Presidential Chain and tools of power. It was an all-white affair.

We raised 340,000 francs during the Fundraiser towards their club project of reaching out/ supporting Teen mothers with sustainable solutions!

I also got an opportunity to step into Lake Kivu which is one of the African Great Lakes that lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and is in the

Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. It’s also believed that Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika.

All in all, it was an amazing experience and invited them to visit the Rotary Club of Kampala North when they get an opportunity to come to Uganda as well.
