Ideal locations to get outdoors in the Middle East; Adventure, exploration and discovery... …CLIMB A MOUNTAIN Most of the Hajar Mountain range lies in Oman, which runs in a north-south direction. However, the part lying in the UAE is abundant with rugged and steep mountains, and has plenty of deep valleys, providing you with excellent locations to set up camp.

Hiking over the Hajar Mountains is considered a very healthy and entertaining activity for hiking enthusiasts. It is up to you, whether you want to book a hiking trip during the day or double the fun by booking an overnight hike. Whatever you choose, you are bound to have the time of your life.

… VISIT A WADI This wadi lies along the Grand Canyon of Arabia. The route to this wadi or valley is one of the most dramatic drives on offer in the country, as it runs from coast-to-coast.

En-route to the destination, you pass by two valleys, each having their own distinct feel; Wadi Khab Al Shamis on the east and the wider Wadi Bih on the west coast.

The valley gives plenty of opportunities for hiking and offers a fantastic range of views for those that do take the walk. The main thing that attracts campers to this area is not the view from the wadi, but the wildlife experience that this region offers!

A trip to Wadi Bih is really a memorable wildlife experience, so don’t be alarmed to get woken up by the brays of wild donkeys even before the sun has fully risen! …SPEND THE NIGHT The Musandam peninsula is popularly known as the Norway of Arabia, because of its sheer sided fjords and dramatic mountains. Khor Najd is considered to be the place that offers the finest view of the fjords in the entire UAE region. Therefore, setting up tents and having a blazing BBQ grill going is one of the must-do activities in the area.

Khor Najd is the most visited region of Musandam. Many cruise rides to the fjords are offered in and around the Musandam area with a selection of different tour packages to choose from. Some of the cruise operators offer an overnight trip with camping facilities at a remote beach near the fjords, while others offer half-day cruise trips, with options for camping as well. It’s also the best spot to swim with wild dolphins.

In recent times, this place has managed to attract many tourists on its hot, yet exciting desert area. The dune areas are not very populated, hence it can be a good spot for picnics during winter seasons and for some breathtaking 4×4 drives. …HEAD INTO THE DESERT Ras Al Khaimah or “Top of the Tent” is the northern most emirate of the UAE. Ras Al Khaimah is home to the UAE’s most documented history and as most of the historical sites are located on mountain sides and at wadis, it is the ideal location to combine culture with adventure. For thrill seekers, off-roading in a 4x4 can be done throughout the emirate.

The famous Desert Camp provides an insight into the nomadic way of life and offers the opportunity to discover delicious native cuisines. One of the UAE’s largest water parks “Iceland Water Park” is also located in Ras Al Khaimah and if looking for fun and excitement, then Iceland Water Park is the perfect place for you and the family. While in the area, apart from visiting the local waterpark, you also have the opportunity to visit the famous falcon show.

CAMPING GUIDE:

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TENT Choosing the right tent is a complex decision that’s influenced by where, when you camp, and also how you camp. The three big items that affect your pack weight are your pack itself, your sleeping bag and your shelter.

Investing in a lightweight tent is important for reducing your total pack weight.

New to the world of camping? Follow our guidelines to choosing the correct equipment for your needs and wants.

How many people?

Tents are usually geared to fit 2,4,6,8 or 10 people inside. Consider how many people are likely to be sleeping in the tent at any one time and purchase the appropriate size. Large family tents with cubicles are available with different divisions, ideal to separate parents and children. However, if you are planning a camping adventure with friends, a simple, smaller tent is advised.

To ventilate or not?

For optimum comfort, tents should offer some form of ventilation. In the UAE there is rarely the worry of being too cold, but ventilation holes should be large enough to allow fresh air to circulate. In the UAE,

there is not ever a real concern of being too cold, so good ventilation will mean that everyone will experience the fresh air that you can only experience out of the city.

Which material?

The optimum materials for tents in the UAE are polyester and nylon. These materials are lightweight, waterproof and easy to wipe down and keep clean. Cotton tents are also available and are light weight and rainproof, however if they do get wet, the weight increases dramatically. Polyester and nylon tents will be prone to sun damage over time, so best to bag yourself a nice shady spot.

To pop or assemble?

Different tents require different assembly processes; some simply pop up and down, whereas more traditional tents require poles to be placed and correctly secured to the ground. These tents take slightly longer to erect than pop up tents but will offer more protection from nature’s elements, however pop-up tents are very light and portable.

Temperature

Temperature is the most important factor when choosing a sleeping bag; A sleeping bag’s temperature rating identifies the lowest temperature at which a bag is intended to keep the average sleeper warm. When a bag is described as a “20-degree bag,” it means that most users should remain comfortable if the air temperature drops no lower than 20°F. However, for camping in the UAE it is unlikely that low temperatures are ever going to be a concern, but if your plan is to trek Everest base camp, then temperature knowledge becomes a vital part of the planning process. It is advised to choose a sleeping bag that provides 5 degrees higher than the temperature at your location.

Material

The most common materials are nylon, polyester and taffeta, but there are other materials used that provide better insulation through a range of technologies. Ripstop is nylon or polyester that has heavier threads woven into the material. The heavier threads reinforce the shell, making it stronger and more resistant to both tears and moisture, while still remaining breathable. DryClime is a microfiber and these are very tightly woven materials that are strong and moisture-resistant. They are softer than Ripstop, because they lack the heavier threads sewn into the material. DryLoft is a fabric that has water-resistant abilities, but it remains very breathable, which means it offers great comfort. It won’t trap any moisture inside, so you’ll stay warm and dry on the inside and leave the wet and dampness on the outside of the sleeping bag.

Filling

There are 2 main fillers of sleeping bags; synthetic finer and goose feather. Where the synthetic fiber is often heavy and bulky, the goose feather creates a much lighter bag.

Weight

The weight of the sleeping bag is an important factor, especially if you are going on a long hike or trek. Typically Mummy sleeping bags weigh less than a standard rectangular bag, however it’s a personal decision on the level of comfort you require.

Shape

The main aim of any sleeping bag is to keep you warm, this happens by trapping a layer of ‘dead’, noncirculating air around your body.

Your body heat then warms the ‘dead’ air and the bag stops the warm air from escaping.

A basic sleeping bag will be rectangular in shape, with a zip running down each side; these bags offer freedom of movement, but are suited for warmer climates and not suited for more extreme conditions where you expect the temperature to be low.

Mummy shaped bags have narrow shoulder and hip widths and taper towards your feet, they maximise on warmth but some people find them restrictive due to less freedom of movement. These bags often feature a hood, which helps to cocoon your whole body.

nown as ‘the Swiss Machine’ Ueli Steck is the most acclaimed Alpinist in the world. A legend in his own right, pushing mountaineering to a new dimension and achieving what most would believe is unachievable. His solo speed climbs are the stuff of near fantasy; he climbed Annapurna’s terrifying South Face round trip in only 28 hours, The North Face of the Eiger in under 3 hours and the Matterhorn in just under 2 hours.

With visions to try to achieve the impossible, Steck is a man who pushes boundaries, inspires thousands and achieves great things.

Who inspired you to make mountaineering a career?

I was inspired by reading books by Walter Bonatti and Reinhold Messner; 2 of the greatest explorers of all time and I realised it was something I wanted to experience as well. They created their own mark on history and became legends in the sport, to be able not only to emulate what they achieve but to surpass it is very exciting.

What is your greatest achievement?

I enjoy everyday activities, having the freedom to run and climb everyday is what counts. I have done many climbs but there is not one that I regard to be better than the rest. I have worked very hard to be able to set new records and achieve great times, but the best thing is being able to do what I love and have been lucky enough to make it my career.

They have a small, yet powerful team and I like to be part of a small team. A team with less people who do the job well is better than a large team with people who are not fully committed. It is a brand that I feel passionate about and honoured to be representing. It has also opened new doors for me and given me new opportunities and areas of the world to explore.

What’s next on your list of adventures?

I have just returned from Nepal where I climbed with Tenji, who is the first Sherpa to have climbed the Cholatse North Face.

It was a very inspiring experience for me to have so much fun whilst climbing. I hope to return to Nepal as soon as the weather improves to climb Nupste South Face. The South Face is something I look forward to adding to my list of achievements.

WHY CARRY A CAMERA WHEN YOU CAN WEAR IT? The recently launched GoPro Hero4, lets you capture excitement-packed footage in a way that’s simply impossible with a conventional camera. Whether you’re looking for incredible slow-mo shots or awe-inspiring time-lapse, the GoPro makes it easy.

1. Check your angles: To pack in as much activity as possible, action cameras tend to have very wide angle lenses. When shooting at 1080p, the latest GoPro offers wide, medium or narrow fields of view; our preference is the narrow or medium options. Play around with natural light; look to create shadows in filming to add extra dimensions or if the camera is static, use light to highlight a person or object.

2. Make the most of the fish-eye lens Wide angle lens mean great fish-eye still images. Even better news is that this is great for selfies as you can fit lots of background; this is where a pole like the GoPole Grenade Grip comes in handy, letting you take a snap at arm’s length. Continuing the aquatic theme, the fish-gape selfie is now in fashion, so go gaping with GoPro! 3. Add a Filter GoPro have filters that makes the likes of Instagram look like child’s play. There are several options to choose from in particular a red filter makes a big difference when you’re filming underwater 4. Check Your Settings: Most of the settings can usually be left on auto, letting the camera work its magic. However, if you want to experiement, the GoPro will let you choose the white balance from 3000k for low light settings up to 6500k for places with lots of white light, like a brightly lit room or outside on a sunny day.

5. Mount it There’s an incredible selection of mounts available for action cams, ranging from the GoPro Fetch for dogs, to mic stand mounts and clamps for surfboards, heads and handlebars. Don’t be afraid to use gaffer tape; it keeps your equipment extra safe and helps you control your angles.

6. Context and Editing Short snippets of action are great, but monotonous footage can be arduous. You can use basic (and free) editing software such as GoPro Studio 2.0 to cobble your footage together and our main tip here would be keep it short.

Precise, to the point and with maximum impact.

7. Altering Time Simple editing software is available to slow down video that you’ve shot at higher frame rates for an incredibly cool slow motion result. For example, a video shot at 60fps can be played at half the speed by slowing it to 30fps, which will overly exaggerate the footage. The latest GoPros also have a Time Lapse Mode where you can choose the interval at which the cam will take snaps - 1 minute interval being the largest . You need to keep the camera completely still while filming a time lapse, so a tripod like the Gorilla Pod is probably in order here.

An inspiring individual who has learnt to respect the outdoors, whilst enjoying everything they have to offer What drives you to explore mountains?

Being able to see, touch, smell, hear, and taste the parts of the world where no one has ever been before. I’m inspired by the idea that it’s possible to do something that can be considered impossible.

Describe your perfect day in the outdoors.

Sleeping under a sky full of stars, having breakfast while watching the sunrise, climbing all day with my friends, opening a new route, living a dream and touching the sky from the summit.

What or Who inspires you?

A quote by Albert Frederick Mummery (1855-1895) has always stuck with me: “The true mountaineer is the man who attempts new ascents, and

equally, whether he succeeds or fails, delights in the fun and joy of the struggle.”

What has your mountaineering taught you?

It has taught me to respect nature and to appreciate the simple things in life. It has also taught me to love my life, to help people, to always think positively, and to share my emotions.

Besides climbing, how do you train?

I do a lot of ski mountaineering, trail running and sport climbing. I also do yoga (I’m a disaster, but it helps core strength), biking, swimming and working out in general.

What are your other interests?

Photography. Some people think it’s my second job... But it is just a passion!

talian Alpinist, Herve Barmasse was born in the shadow of the Matterhorn to mountaineer parents, so climbing and outdoor sports are in his blood.

His early career looked promising, as he excelled as a ski racer, but a devastating accident took that dream away. After a year of rehabilitation, hard work and perseverance he was able to stand at the base of the Matterhorn and climb the giant mountain.

Since that day, Herve has travelled the globe, conquering mountains that other experienced climbers shy away from, in the Alps, Pakistan, Nepal, China and Patagonia.

Although he has seen the world, he is very content on his own doorstep. He believes that, “all you have to do is choose the season, accept risk, and most importantly to search passionately to fulfil your dreams - that is all you need for your fantasy to run free”.
