The information in this publication is correct as of 31 Mar 2025 but the SSO reserves the right to change programmes or artists without prior notice.
Our 2025/26 season is a bittersweet one as it marks Maestro Hans Graf’s final year as our Music Director. We are immensely grateful for his exceptional leadership which saw the orchestra through the pandemic on to two triumphant tours in Japan and Australia, and a series of magnificent concerts in Singapore that have left our audience spellbound, and on more than one occasion, on their feet in rapturous applause. If you have not experienced our Music Director in action, I urge you to do so in his final season with us, and witness firsthand the remarkable synergy between him and our SSO musicians in highlights such as Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony and Holst’s The Planets in December and January respectively.
We also bid farewell this season to Associate Conductor Rodolfo Barráez, who has been an integral part of the orchestra since 2022. His vibrant musicality has resonated with both new and long-time audiences, especially at our community and Christmas concerts. Do join us this year so
you can see him weave his magic with a series of unforgettable programmes at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay, and Victoria and Esplanade Concert Halls. We are expecting packed crowds as always.
We are, of course, very excited to announce Maestro Hannu Lintu as our next Music Director from the 2026/27 season. The world-renowned Finnish conductor is no stranger to the SSO, having built a strong rapport with our musicians and concertgoers since his debut SSO concert in 2017. For those who want to reacquaint themselves with his virtuosity before his official appointment begins, Lintu is set to regale us with Shostakovich, Haydn and Mahler across two weeks in the upcoming season.
... and we’re just getting started.
This season, we also welcome back acclaimed musicians Simon Trpčeski, Yeol Eum Son, Rudolf Buchbinder, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Stephen Hough, Leila Josefowicz, Sayaka Shoji, Bertrand Chamayou, Leonidas Kavakos and conductors Masaaki Suzuki, Eliahu Inbal and Han-Na Chang. The orchestra also performs again with globally-lauded composerconductor Joe Hisaishi in July, and, we are thrilled to announce that, following his last appearance in 2016, legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma will make his much-anticipated return to present Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in September.
We also look forward to artists making their SSO debut including Leticia Moreno, Julia Hagen, Kolja Blacher, Juanjo Mena, Sergei Nakariakov and Mikhail Pletnev as composer-conductor, and our always-well-liked SSO Pops series, which, this season, comprises a film screening of Disney’s Fantasia accompanied by live orchestral music, as well as a bite-sized programme of audience-friendly works for concertgoers who are newer to classical music. Of note too is the Alpine Symphony in July which will feature stunning image projections that amplify the musical experience.
With 2025 marking our SG60 year, we are especially proud to showcase our Singaporean
talents this season, including pianist Churen Li, organist Isaac Lee, saxophonist Samuel Phua, President’s Young Performers Concert alumni Adrian Tang and Toby Tan, musicians from Ding Yi Music Company and re:Sound, and our former Artist-In-Residence Chloe Chua.
Additionally, internationally-recognised violinist Jonathan Ong and saxophonist Lin Chien-Kwan return to Singapore to take centrestage in the eighth edition of our SSO National Day Concert, which features new works by homegrown composers including Izharul Haq, Tan Chan Boon, Tan Yuting and Chok Kerong. Speaking of world premieres, don’t miss Jonathan Shin’s Piano Concerto and a new work by Wang Chenwei plus Joyce Koh’s Earth, a complementary piece to Holst’s The Planets. We are also delighted to welcome back The Hallé’s Principal Conductor Kahchun Wong to lead the SSO for a series of concert programmes specially curated in partnership with Wong. Look out for Wong’s take on Pictures at an Exhibition in April which will also involve our friends from the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and offer us a fascinating contrast to the Ravel version which the SSO will also perform.
Also definitely something to mark down in your calendar are the concert dates by the Singapore National Youth Orchestra – fresh from their JuneJuly 2025 tour of Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau – as well as the various SSO programmes featuring our sensational Singapore Symphony Choruses, particularly Nielsen’s cantatas of love and springtime in October. You also won’t want to miss our annual Children’s Day, Halloween, Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day festivities.
Over the last two seasons, we have been so encouraged by the 90% house average that we have been able to garner with your passionate support, and to see over 100,000 live concertgoers moved by our music each year. This inspires all of us at the Singapore Symphony to keep giving you the best of ourselves – and we hope you will find something this season (or rather, many “some things”) to inspire you in return!
Dear music lovers, concertgoers and friends of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra,
It is now ten years since I discovered Singapore and that I first conducted the SSO.
What a great feeling it was for me to be in this vibrant and friendly city – and even more to work with this excellent and enthusiastic orchestra! Never would I have expected that this first encounter could lead to such a wonderful and deep relationship. I was surprised, pleased and honoured when in 2020, I was offered the position of Chief Conductor and later of Music Director: I accepted with gratitude and without hesitation.
After the enormous initial hurdle of the pandemic, cutting down our work to a minimum, the resilience and strength of both administration and musicians and our good collaboration kept us in good condition, and we were more than happy to return to our former and even greater strength. We won back our audience and spread our wings to reach higher performance levels and conquer new and important repertoires, including many Singapore premieres.
Now, five years later, it is time for me to remember this beginning: I had said that I would be happy to work and lead the orchestra for a certain time. I feel, without sadness, that I have given to this happy collaboration as much input as possible, and that my efforts were generously rewarded by mutual respect, confidence, warmth and the success of our common work over all the years, in rehearsal and concert.
I am proud to see that the orchestra is in excellent artistic shape, ready and capable of reaching further heights of performance and success. It gives me pleasure and peace of mind to know the SSO’s
future is in the best hands: Hannu Lintu, with his fresh impact and ideas, will lead the orchestra to new levels of recognition, internationally and at home in Singapore.
That said, I want to draw your attention to this last season of mine which will bring to you – again – musical staples and monuments, interesting discoveries, world premieres as well as old favourites. And a proud array of remarkable soloists, from some young ones to discover to many famous ones to admire.
We open the season with two formidable towers of romantic greatness: Richard Strauss’s lush Alpine Symphony and Anton Bruckner’s enigmatic and deeply moving 9th Symphony. They are as different from each other as one can imagine but both are challenging players and listeners alike in the most gratifying way.
After many colourful and intriguing programs, popular and spicy, sweet and tangy, we end the season with two friendly, delicate and entertaining concerts at our intimate Victoria Concert Hall. The first is full of the
irreverent, humorous and virtuosic charm of French music. The other proposes an intriguing comparison/ confrontation of Mozart and Salieri, based on a small but sublime theatre piece by Russia’s all-time genius Pushkin, which was written not long after Mozart’s death and then turned into an opera a half-century later by the great Rimsky-Korsakov. Aptly titled Mozart and Salieri, this depicts Pushkin’s (wrong) hypothesis of Mozart being poisoned by Salieri. It reached world-renowned status because it laid the basis for the irresistible movie Amadeus. It is clearly based on a lie (‘alternative truth’) – but it earned Mozart a crazy popularity like never seen before and opened the ears of millions to his music. So in this case, we don’t mind that it’s all wrong!
I invite you to have a closer look at all the beautiful and inspiring programmes of our 2025/26 season. Together with all of us at the SSO family, I will be delighted to welcome you and your friends often at our beautiful concert halls, the splendid Esplanade and the elegant Victoria Concert Halls.
Wishing you many exhilarating moments with the SSO!
Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene with its 44-week calendar of events.
In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore through its school programmes. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. In 2021, the SSO clinched third place in the prestigious Orchestra of the Year Award by Gramophone. In 2022, BBC Music Magazine named the SSO as one of the 23 best orchestras in the world.
“a stunning display of technical brilliance, emotional depth, and musical unity.”
Weekend Notes on SSO
From the 2026/27 season, the SSO will be led by Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu, the fourth Music Director in the orchestra’s history after Choo Hoey (1979–1996), Lan Shui (1997–2019) and Hans Graf (2020–2026).
The orchestra performs over 60 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works, as well as community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the Home of the SSO.
Beyond Singapore, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States. In the 2024/25 season, the SSO performed to full houses at Asia Orchestra Week in Kyoto, Japan, and made its “dazzling – and true-blue – Down Under debut” (Limelight) in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
In May 2016, the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five-city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s second performance at the Berlin Philharmonie. In 2014, the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received praise in major UK newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions.
The SSO has released more than 50 recordings, with over 30 on the BIS label. Recent critically acclaimed albums include Herrmann’s Wuthering Heights (Chandos) and Scriabin – Poems of Ecstasy and Fire (BIS). A complete Mozart Violin Concerto cycle with Singaporean violinist Chloe Chua conducted by Hans Graf will be released in 2025 on Pentatone. The SSO also leads the revival and recording of significant works such as Kozłowski’s Requiem, Ogerman’s Symbiosis (after Bill Evans) and violin concertos by Robert Russell Bennett and Vernon Duke.
“The Singapore Symphony slings a dazzling – and true-blue – Down Under debut.”
The Limelight on SSO

Fielding quadruple winds, four Wagner tubas, two harps, organ, wind and thunder machines, cow bells, tam-tam and celesta on top of a standard orchestra, An Alpine Symphony is a musical odyssey from nocturnal embarkation to sunlit peak, forging its stalwart way through glacier, vertigo, storm and determination. Bach’s concertos are the pinnacle of Baroque finesse and splendour. They effortlessly encapsulate vigour, beauty and austerity in scores as succinct as they are unforgettable. Surviving only as versions for harpsichord, no one knows what instrument BWVs 1052 and 1056 were originally written for. But these were certainly the first solo keyboard concertos ever to exist, setting the stage for the piano. The formidable Polina Osetinskaya brings you the piano versions of these masterworks in this programme conducted by Swiss maestro Mario Venzago, who also leads the Singapore Symphony in Schumann’s noble Second Symphony.
This concert is dedicated to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, founding patron of the SSO.

Legend has it that his contemporary, the composer Antonio Salieri, poisoned Mozart out of jealousy, leading to the latter’s premature death in 1791, aged just 35. Is this true? Consider for yourself in this psychological drama – in essence, RimskyKorsakov’s version of the celebrated film Amadeus, if in a much darker, introspective 2-act operetta based on Pushkin’s play.
Specially curated by our Music Director Hans Graf, this final concert in the SSO’s 2025/26 season keeps you thinking as we present a piano concerto by each of the two composers: Mozart’s contemplative No. 14 and Salieri’s charming Piano Concerto in C major. A musical outing for families with fun activities in and around Victoria Concert Hall.
Beyond the concert hall, the SSO is committed to creating lasting impact through meaningful community engagements. Centred around building and deepening connections between individuals, groups and institutions, our work looks to create a musical ecosystem that enriches lives, welcomes diversity, inspires collective growth and cultivates a shared appreciation for the arts – all through the transformative power of classical music.
Every concert season introduces an array of community-driven initiatives, from free concerts to school programmes, that we hope will make live symphonic music accessible to more.
Touching nearly 20,000 from first timers to avid classical lovers, three weeks yearly, the SSO presents a signature series of free concerts at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Victoria Concert Hall, Magic Hour @ Raffles Hotel and SSO In Your Community in the heartlands. This set of concerts by the SSO continually strive to bring programmatic variety from familiar classics to thematic local compositions; and likewise for families, our colourful story-based Concerts for Children offer easy entryways into the classical world. Our youth musicians, the SNYO, actively participates in school performances and its chamber ensembles, at community events, fostering a broader appreciation for classical music.
Dedicated to creating a musical landscape that resonates with future generations, the SSO, Choruses and SNYO have embarked on an incredible journey, to reach closer to audiences through an extensive range of programmes that offer diverse learning opportunities and mentorship, from on-campus demonstrations to concert-hall experiences and learning resources.
Complementary to curriculum learnings, the SSO welcomes school groups to the concert hall through Music Excursions, SSO Demonstration Concert for School Bands, Performing Arts-Based Learning (PABL) concerts, goes to campuses with demonstrative performances Connect With Music!, and pre-concert workshops Concerts Unboxed!, and offers self-paced learning through digital resources PABL (Digital).
Other platforms that allow aspiring musicians to hone their skills and showcase their talents with the national orchestra, include the biennial National Piano & Violin Competition that brings participants before a panel of international adjudicators and crafted experiential events guided by our performing groups, such as The SSCC Experience and The Choral Encounter, where the artistic team and members of Chorus, Youth and Children’s Choirs introduce the world of classical singing to all, from beginners to serious vocalists.
Offering rigorous training programmes, the Choruses and SNYO each provide a well-rounded platform of opportunities for talent development. The Choruses draw membership from diverse ages, nationalities and walks of life. Choristers receive comprehensive training in performance etiquette, vocal and musicianship coaching, to perform in concerts with the SSO and in their own presentations. The SNYO nurtures young talent with a New Learner Programme for pianists aged 10-13 interested in learning an orchestral instrument. Members gain performance opportunities, explore diverse musical genres, and participate in Instrument Days, sectionals, and ensembles, all contributing to their musical growth. The programme also offers workshops, masterclasses, and coaching by SSO musicians and international guest artists.
Beyond our own, forging new partnerships remains key to our work of building a community of music excellence and spotlighting repertory diversity. The Venue Support scheme supports emerging local ensembles by sharing SSO expertise and venue for productions at the Victoria Concert Hall. SSO Organ Series presents local and international organists in a magnificent range of music, from traditional soliloquys to transcriptions of orchestral showpieces and contemporary compositions. SSO National Day Concert seeks to showcase Singaporean works and composers whilst making concert-going an inclusive experience with sign language interpretation and working with differently abled artists and performers.
In all that we do, the SSO, Choruses and SNYO seek to nurture, inspire and celebrate the best of musical excellence together with the community.
In our journey of over four decades in giving meaning to music, we owe our achievements and milestones to all who have helped build the SSO since day one — our passionate audiences, talented musicians and generous patrons who have placed your national orchestra on the world map.
