A

my and Bart VanderZanden’s family journey with the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon began in the mid-70s when Bart was a student at St. Matthew Parish School in Hillsboro.

Specifically he credits the “structure coupled with kindness” that school principal Sr. Alberta Schwall instilled in him and fellow classmates. Desiring the same educational balance for their sons, Luke ’12 and Drew ’15, Amy and Bart brought the boys to Valley Catholic in 2006. Their boys had excellent educational opportunities at Valley Catholic School, and through interaction with classmates, faculty, coaches, Sisters and Maryville residents, they learned how interdependent we are on one another. “Through the eyes of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, Luke and Drew have a distinct awareness of themselves,” says Amy, “even more so, an awareness of those around them, and that’s really important to us as a family and members of the community.” For the VanderZanden family, giving back, so that others can experience the care and opportunities afforded by the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, is effortless.

GRATITUDE AND GENEROSITY

Walt and Florence Weber

“This is our way of expressing gratitude to the Sisters for the role they have in our life.”

F

lorence (Giddings) Weber is proud to say she is a St. Mary of the Valley alumna from the class of 1941. She was a day student and remembers sweeping floors to help cover tuition. She holds fond memories of her days on campus and the relationships she established with the Sisters who at that time were part of the faculty. She had an affinity for math and recalls wearing a uniform in high school. Florence’s mother became ill during her senior year. As a result, Florence stayed home to care for her, which prohibited her from graduating. Florence becomes emotional when she speaks of the day that Sister Angeline Sohler and Sister Catherine Hertel presented her with an honorary diploma. “It was a happy day that capped off my education,” Florence states with a smile on her face.

Florence raised 5 children and had a 13-year career in nursing. Today, approaching 61 years of marriage, Florence and her husband, Walt, stay busy delivering surplus bread to the Sisters. Every Monday and Tuesday morning they drive to local stores where the day-old bread is loaded into Walt’s truck. Delivering bread to the Convent is something the Webers have done for 27 years. The bread keeps the Sisters’ pantry stocked, and is the Webers’ way of giving back to both the Sisters and to Florence’s alma mater. Florence kindly states, “This is our way of expressing gratitude to the Sisters for the role they have in our life.”

Letter from the Executive Director of the SSMO Foundation Dear Families and Friends of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, Valley Catholic School and Maryville, I am delighted to share the SSMO Foundation’s 2015–2016 Annual Report for gifts received through the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016. This report shines a light on our donors, whose faith and inspiration in the SSMO mission allow the SSMO Foundation to receive and steward gifts with confidence.

In the blink of an eye, our campus wrapped up another fiscal year, and as such, we have the opportunity to look back over a decade of spectacular development. From new and improved facilities to growing financial aid and endowments, the Sisters’ mission continues to flourish thanks to generous donors, committed faculty and staff, and leadership on all levels of every campus organization.

The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, residents of Maryville, and students at Valley Catholic School all benefit from the new and modified facilities and resources. We look forward to their lasting, meaningful impact on people’s lives for generations to come.

This year’s fundraising success was highlighted by thoughtful donors who utilized their employee matching gift programs to maximize their giving potential. Thanks to donor awareness and initiative, corporate support through employee matching gift programs increased nearly 200% over last year. As a community, we received gifts from more than 1200 donors, almost twenty percent of them gave for the first time ever.

CULTIVATING THE NEXT GENERATION

Rich Baek

S

everal years ago, feeling extremely blessed with a successful career and loving family, Rich Baek took a long hard look at his personal and professional life. He knew he was in search of something more meaningful, and after some soul searching, Rich established his personal statement: To cultivate the next generation of leaders through education. According to Rich, “Life is not all about you and your desires. It is important to contribute to something that will make you feel complete.”

Rich currently serves on the Board of Directors at the University of Portland and at Concordia University, Portland and is inspired by the deliberate coaching and positive influence of those who came before him. In his role as an ambassador for both organizations and as a Valley Catholic alumni parent, he is determined to do the same for others. “The Sisters’ story, and their sacrifices, model giving for all of us,” commented Rich. When he and his wife Rachel give in support of the Sisters’ mission, they know their gifts will be used wisely. They feel fortunate to be part of the growth that is taking place at Valley Catholic School. “Giving is a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

As a donor whose strategic gifts have changed the face of the campus, Rich will return time and again to support current and future students. He says, “I want to cheer for the Valiants’ football team on Friday night under the lights and treat myself to a free hotdog! I want to step back and see how a gift to the athletic facility multiplied into something much larger than ever expected.”

Letter from the President of the SSMO Ministries Corporation As the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon mark the 130th anniversary of their founding, I am struck by the sheer grandness of God’s providence which has enveloped, enlivened, enhanced and energized Sisters, students, residents, families and staff over the years. Without the generosity of family, friends and acquaintances who have been touched by all things SSMO, our mission and ministry, charism and core values would have little or no impact. A tiny seed sprouted in Oregon one day and became SSMO, VCS and Maryville. Our SSMO Foundation fertilizes and waters, and thousands contribute to help provide community care through faith and action!

Letter from the SSMO Superior General

I

n the early spring, the soil in the garden is tilled, just like it has been for generations at the Herinckx farm. Located in Verboort, Oregon, the thirty-seven acre farm where the garden grows is home to James and Doris Herinckx. It is the land James grew up on, and year after year, he follows the tradition his parents began so long ago, of growing produce for the Sisters. James sometimes spends seven hours a day on a tractor farming wheat and crimson clover or gardening, mostly gardening.

Doris stays busy helping out in the garden and baking in the farmhouse. James believes that 90% of the garden is planted specifically for the Sisters. He remarks, “I’m planting anyway, so why not share?” Once a week they travel from Verboort to the Convent where they cheerfully share the fruits of their labor. From apples to walnuts, and beets to zucchini, James and Doris provide produce for the Sisters.

Doris sums it up by saying, “We enjoy giving, because the Sisters have given so much.”

From almost the moment our Community was founded we have relied on the great generosity of our families and friends! From the Benedictine monks who supplied vital provisions and transportation for our founding Sisters to the recent donations of fruits and vegetables this summer, we have been blessed. From our first “begging” tour endorsed by Archbishop William Gross in 1887 to recent donations in support of the ESOL program and other ministries, we are deeply indebted to our families and friends. May God bless you abundantly.

A GIFT OF TIME AND PLACE

Adrian and Marie Hernandez

T

he job offer that came through on an improperly operating fax machine lead Adrian and Marie Hernandez from California to Oregon in 1990. In their relocation search for housing and schools, they found themselves on the corner of T.V. Highway and Murray Blvd., where the campus of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon took their breath away. They climbed the front steps to the beautiful brick Convent and knocked on the door. When the big convent door opened, they were greeted by a smile they will never forget! Sr. Fidelis Kreutzer shared with them that the 3rd grade class had one spot available for their daughter Ana Maria. At that very moment, both Adrian and Marie knew St. Mary of the Valley Grade School was the right place for their daughter.

It was the perfect fit for Ana Maria: She thrived as a student and today is a successful lawyer.

Today, Adrian and Marie find themselves back on campus, driving by that same Convent door, as they deliver their grandson to Valley Catholic Early Learning School. Their family tradition continues with the next generation of students. As Adrian Hernandez reminisces he happily shares, “Our lives have held an abundance of miracles, finding Valley Catholic School was one of them. We love the Sisters, and we try to follow their example of giving by being good stewards of all we have been blessed with. When we give, it makes us aware of just how blessed we are.” Marie echoed his sentiments by saying, “God has always provided for us, and now we want to pay it forward.”

Letter from the President of Valley Catholic School Simply put, our school would not be possible without the generosity and continued support of our donors. Across our school campus our donors attend events, contribute to make projects possible, and, generally, allow us to be the successful school that we strive to be each day. In the last year, Valley Catholic opened the performing arts season to a newly renovated auditorium, and anticipated the completion of a new science building, marking ten years of historic development on our campus. We are grateful for our donors and hope that you, too, are proud of all that we do as Valley Catholic in perpetuating the mission of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.

Letter from the President of Maryville

D

ee Wallo packs as much as possible into everyday life. A dedicated nurse for forty years, Dee has served as a volunteer at Maryville for more than two decades. She made Sundays at Maryville “Bingo Day,” and helped Valley Catholic students fulfill service hours by assisting her. Mentoring young people is something Dee really enjoys. When a student noticed Dee’s inconsistency while calling bingo Dee responded, “I alter the game just a bit so that everyone can feel like a winner!” These words have inspired Dee throughout her life.

Dee is eternally grateful to Sister Geraldine Bernards who was instrumental in transitioning Dee’s mother into Maryville in 1993. It was during that time that Dee began to volunteer, helping wherever there was a need. During her years of service at Maryville, Dee has worn many hats; she served as a tour guide accompanying residents on day trips, chauffeured residents to appointments and brought the Eucharist to residents who were unable to attend Mass. “Caring for others is my thing,” states Dee. It is a huge part of who she is – a humble servant with a zest for life!

Maryville donors play such an integral role in creating a home and a place of healing for those that both live at Maryville and those that are transitioning to the community.

Whether it is help with that special project, books for our library to help pass the day or flowers that add a dash of color, no gift is too small.

The residents and staff of Maryville thank you for your kindness and generosity. You make a difference!

COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE

Our Campus Grows The addition of new buildings and renovation of existing spaces caps a decade of campus capital improvements. These facilities will provide ample resources to support the SSMO-sponsored ministries. We are extremely grateful to our donors for their generous, lasting contributions to these projects.

ã The 13,000 square foot science building was dedicated in September 2016. The building includes five classroom laboratories as well as two prep rooms, a resource room and a greenhouse. The building provides space for faculty and students to explore and discover exciting opportunities in the world of science. æ The Kelly Auditorium renovation included a new sound system, seats, curtain, carpet and fresh paint.

The updated auditorium hosted Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to a packed house every night in March as well as numerous events for the entire campus. â The new 7,030 square foot maintenance building is being utilized by the Sisters and the maintenance team who serve the entire campus. It houses maintenance offices, shop, workstations and equipment/supply storage.
