The Word of God First Lesson Job 42:1–6, 10–17 Then Job answered the Lord: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’

Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me.’

I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends; and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. Psalm Psalm 34:1–8 (19–22) Second Lesson Hebrews 7:23–28 Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

Gospel Reading Mark 10:46–52 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?”

The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We value your friendship and are honored by your presence.

Over the last several weeks, as we have once again been open for the Sunday Eucharist, we have been reminded how important the monastery chapel, the monastic community, and our life of worship are to all of you. I assure you the feeling is mutual! Those long months, when we were closed due to the pandemic, were a challenge to all of us, on a great many levels.

When we reopened in July, our concern was to make the chapel, and our worship, safe and welcoming for everyone. This continues to be a priority for us. Balancing the health and safety of Brothers, staff, Residents, members of the congregation, and our occasional guest, many of whom fall into the vulnerable persons category, is a challenging task.

As you may know, toward the end of August, the Diocese of Massachusetts issued new guidelines regarding in-person worship. These guidelines include the permission to resume congregational singing as long as everyone is masked and keeps appropriately distanced. As I announced earlier, we have now had the opportunity to consult with medical professionals who know the Community, the physical limitations of the chapel, our style of worship, and the science of the virus, and who have reviewed the new guidelines. Because this is our home, and we Brothers spend over two hours each day in the chapel, unmasked, and because a number of Brothers are deemed vulnerable, we have decided to follow the advice of our medical consultants, and continue to ask you as members of the chapel congregation, to refrain from singing. We are aware that the opportunity to sing together is one of the things which people have missed the most. However, for the safety of everyone involved, and especially the Brothers, we ask that you allow the Brothers to sing on your behalf, including the service music.

Now that one time use bulletins are allowed, we are printing the text of the hymns to enable you to follow along and sing in your heart. We know this will not replace the joy of singing yourself but hope that it will enhance in a small way, your experience of this morning’s Eucharist. As our friends, we also know that we can count on your support in this matter.

Your friendship and presence are important to us. Please know that we are so glad you are here today.

Looking Ahead The Brothers will not be livestreaming our services beginning Tuesday, 26 October. We will resume livestreaming on Tuesday, 2 November with the Eucharist at 5:30 PM. In addition, there will not be a public, or livestreamed, celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday, 31 October.

The chapel will be closed that morning. We look forward to seeing you online or in person, on our return.

All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days We will be keeping All Saints’ Day on Tuesday, 2 November and All Souls’ Day on Wednesday, 3 November. If you would like to add a name to the list of the departed to be remembered at our All Souls’ Day Requiem, you can do that by emailing the name(s) to monastery@ssje.org and put All Souls’ Day in the subject line.

Cambridge Half Marathon On Sunday, 7 November, Memorial Drive, in front of the Monastery, will be closed to parking due to the Cambridge Half Marathon. Parking passes will be available from Br James that day for people who normally park on Memorial Drive, and who instead park in one of the local parking garages.

Bundle Up! With the cooler weather coming we encourage you to bundle up when you come to Church on Sundays. At least for the next few weeks we will be keeping the doors and windows of the chapel open as a way to enhance the ventilation. You may want to come equipped with hats and coats to help keep yourself warm!
