Psalm Psalm 104:1–9, 25, 37b Second Lesson Hebrews 5:1–10 Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Gospel Reading Mark 10:35–45 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John.

So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

The Peace Offertory Hymn As newborn stars were stirred to song 1. As newborn stars were stirred to song when all things came to be, as Miriam and Moses sang when Israel was set free, so music bursts unbidden forth when God-filled hearts rejoice, to waken awe and gratitude and give mute faith a voice.

2. In psalms that raise the singer’s sense to universal truths, in prophet’s dark-toned oracle or hymn of three brave youths: the song of faith and praise endured through those God called to be a chosen people bearing light for all the world to see.

We value your friendship and are honored by your presence.

Over the last several weeks, as we have once again been open for the Sunday Eucharist, we have been reminded how important the monastery chapel, the monastic community, and our life of worship are to all of you. I assure you the feeling is mutual! Those long months, when we were closed due to the pandemic, were a challenge to all of us, on a great many levels.

When we reopened in July, our concern was to make the chapel, and our worship, safe and welcoming for everyone. This continues to be a priority for us. Balancing the health and safety of Brothers, staff, Residents, members of the congregation, and our occasional guest, many of whom fall into the vulnerable persons category, is a challenging task.

As you may know, toward the end of August, the Diocese of Massachusetts issued new guidelines regarding in-person worship. These guidelines include the permission to resume congregational singing as long as everyone is masked and keeps appropriately distanced. As I announced earlier, we have now had the opportunity to consult with medical professionals who know the Community, the physical limitations of the chapel, our style of worship, and the science of the virus, and who have reviewed the new guidelines. Because this is our home, and we Brothers spend over two hours each day in the chapel, unmasked, and because a number of Brothers are deemed vulnerable, we have decided to follow the advice of our medical consultants, and continue to ask you as members of the chapel congregation, to refrain from singing. We are aware that the opportunity to sing together is one of the things which people have missed the most. However, for the safety of everyone involved, and especially the Brothers, we ask that you allow the Brothers to sing on your behalf, including the service music.

Now that one time use bulletins are allowed, we are printing the text of the hymns to enable you to follow along and sing in your heart. We know this will not replace the joy of singing yourself but hope that it will enhance in a small way, your experience of this morning’s Eucharist. As our friends, we also know that we can count on your support in this matter.

Your friendship and presence are important to us. Please know that we are so glad you are here today.

Cambridge Half Marathon On Sunday, 7 November, Memorial Drive, in front of the Monastery, will be closed to parking due to the Cambridge Half Marathon. Parking passes will be available from Br James that day for people who normally park on Memorial Drive, and who instead park in one of the local parking garages.
