ello everyone and welcome to the first edition of SSELP Together!

It is so fantastic to have the opportunity to see all the great work happening in our schools.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed towards this edition, particularly our editor Lee Siggs (teacher at St Theresa’s) and Kieron Sexton (teacher at High Hazels) for helping to bring this first edition together.

Firing our imaginations

By Gemma Thornton THIS year, Grimm & Co has partnered up with SSELP to launch Who's Your Neighbour: a creative exploration of the places we live - with a magical twist!

Fifteen primary and secondary schools across the partnership will participate in the programme, where the emphasis is instilling a love of writing and building community cohesion.

Grimm & Co has already worked with Arbourthorne Community Primary School, where A. Clerk and Paddy Lock from Hovels & Grime Estate Agents discovered that this place is a hive of magical energy, with characters such as Stuart Pooert wandering the neighbourhood.

We then ventured to Pipworth Community Primary School where we rehomed Gooseyman the humongous goose (he's settling in wonderfully).

And then we jumped just down the way to Phillimore Community Primary School where we were able to find Mishel the pixie with ten thousand, eight hundred and ninety-nine dragon heads -

the most luxurious home in the school itself.

Pride in new facility Integrated Resource classrooms open at Manor Lodge Acres Hill pupils have reviewed Holes by Louis Sachar Pic: Juli Kosalapova

PUPILS from Acres Hill have been putting pen to paper with a review of Louis Sachar’s award-winning novel Holes.

New York-born Sachar wrote the book, which was also made into a film starring Ghostbusters actress Sigourney Weaver, back in 2010 and it has gone on to become a modern classic.

Hagsa wrote: “I enjoyed the story because it kept switching between the past and the present.

“I didn’t like the part where

“My favourite character is

It is packed full of exciting events

Stanley because he got bullied. I would recommend this book to someone because it is interesting.”

Riley said: “My favourite part was when Stanley chased after Zero because even though they said you won’t find him he did.

“I did not like the start because there was not enough action and it took some time to get into. My favourite character was Stanley because he does lots of mischievous things.

“I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action as it is packed full of exciting events that end in drama.” T!

MANOR LODGE Community Primary and Nursery School has announced the opening of its brand new, purpose-built Integrated Resource (IR).

This wonderful additional classroom is attached to the main school building and in a lovely location next to the garden area.

The journey began on a sunny day back in August 2021 when the appointed contractors arrived at Manor Lodge School.

Their job was to bring to life the trust and school’s vision of an Integrated Resource for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Difficulties.

After months of planning, everyone was excited as the pneumatic drill. started its first job to lay the foundations of our new build. Despite all that the pandemic threw at us, from the first foundations to the last lick of paint, the energy and vision was maintained.

On January 28, the keys to the newly-built IR were passed over to the school.

It was with such pride that this was achieved that the school has decided to call its new IR ‘The Pride.’

When a pupil attends they will become a Manor Lodge Lion Cub and also a member of a class within the main school.

Sheffield South East Trust schools (SSET) has always wanted

to ensure that the city’s youngest pupils are catered for in a nurturing environment.

Within this setting, learning will be delivered by trained practitioners to promote children's independence and individual growth from an early age.

The school has pulled together a skilled team to enable children to access the mainstream curriculum as much as possible alongside inclusive, supportive and accessible learning experiences and interventions.

The school has welcomed Foundation Stage and KS1 children and their families into The Pride IR. Many attending have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and/or Communication and Language needs.

A spokesperson for the school said they were looking forward to sharing experiences and successes in the near future. T!

By Alison Blakemore PHILLIMORE pupils studied the Rights of the Child as part of the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award journey during a Citizenship Faculty Week.

The whole school looked at the plight of refugees. Y5 debated the question 'Does escaping from a

situation always bring you peace?'

Y6 explored the book 'Wisp' and produced artwork 'through the eye of the refugee' .

Y1 looked at what it would be like to live on an island where you had freedoms and compared it to an island where you did not have rights (Freedomia and Restictdom).

Y2 explored where our rights are evident during the day.

Meanwhile, Y4 designed a patchwork to represent each of the articles set out on the Rights of the Child and Y3 compared rights around the world.

Foundation Stage did some learning about families and being a good citizen. T!

Out and about with Buddy and Dom ST THERESA’S has continued its commitment to getting out beyond the four walls to help pupils learn more about our local area.

The Great Outdoors with Mr White Report by pupils Hollie and Beau CHILDREN at Wybourn Primary School are working with Mr White and their class teachers outside of their classrooms to make learning fun.

Throughout the year, Mr White will be working with children across school in every year group.

He loves to share his ideas and encourages all teachers to make learning as much fun as possible through outdoor learning.

As part of outdoor learning, children learn everywhere.

This could be in the corridors, the hall, the playground and any space outside of the classroom that is a different environment.

Mr White has been teaching outdoor learning from the beginning of the year and he has Miss Thornley’s full support.

Before Covid 19, Miss Thornley had booked training for staff to improve their knowledge of teaching outdoor learning. The training was called Beyond 4 Walls. Miss Thornley then asked Mr White to take over.

Outdoor learning is when you use the outdoors and nature as part of your subjects. Mr White explained how if you just take your books outside that is not outdoor learning and will never be.

An example of outdoor learning is in English lessons writing poetry about the weather because it brings the outdoors into children’s learning.

He loves the outdoors and outdoor learning because of how he grew up, which was mostly outside.

It is something Mr White is extremely passionate about.

“Although I was not quite like Mowgli from The Jungle Book”, he explained.

Mr White went to school in Ghana in Africa. His education at primary school was very different to education at Wybourn.

Growing up and attending school in Ghana made him resilient, resourceful and intellectual. Outdoor learning benefits the children in lots of different ways, such as their mental and physical health. It also helps them to be more active while learning about nature.

At the moment, Mr White works with class teachers to come up with great, adventurous ways to learn.

If he could, Mr White would be outdoors all of the time with his class. When he works outside, he loves it because he sees more smiles, laughs and cheerful children. Outdoor learning takes children outside of their comfort zone and challenges them.

Mr White said: “It doesn’t matter if a bug crawls over your work, the leaves fall from the trees or the rain lands on you! T!

Music helping to bring stories to life

Musical Stories engages children in musical fun and leanrning

WYBOURN Primary School have counted themselves lucky to be part of the Sheffield Music Hub ‘Musical Stories’ project organised in collaboration with SSELP.

The ‘Musical Stories’ project is designed to engage children aged 2-7 in musical fun and learning.

In class, pupils can listen and take part in a story with an original music soundtrack to compliment it.

According to reception teacher Jenny Bingham, the stories have all been thoroughly enjoyed by the children and are all real ‘page turners.’

She enthused that the stories have played a huge part in promoting reading for pleasure at the Manor Oaks Road school. Staff felt that the music that had been composed made the stories come to life and was a catalyst for the children to be

even more engrossed in the books than they otherwise would have been.

An unforeseen but welcome outcome has been that they found that the stories promote

The children knew the songs so well and we were totally delighted with their behaviour

conversation around some philosophical topics.

Jenny said the programme succeeded in its goal to enable children to become

‘enthusiastic and independent readers’ and ‘to be excited in the world around them.’

This was no doubt aided by two live performances from Polly Ives and musicians Elliott Bailey and Jack McNeill.

These performances helped the children to experience and develop new knowledge and vocabulary as well as having a fantastic, fun-filled morning.

All EYFS children and Key Stage 1 classes took part in ‘Musical Stories’ week during the summer term 2021.

Staff beamed about how the project had helped them discover new and quality children’s texts and many felt that teaching music in this way was positive as it strongly supported literacy and reading for pleasure.

The staff and pupils were not the only ones left delighted

with this collaboration.

Colleagues from the Musical Stories said: “We had a really wonderful day doing the Dinosaur Department Store.

“I am genuinely so impressed with the teachers.

“The children knew the songs so well and we were totally delighted with their behaviour, their engagement and enthusiasm.

“Really brilliant!”

Singing together as one again ArbourthorneCommunityPrimarySchool’s Rob Holdsworth reportsonOneVoice SHEFFIELD Music Hub organised the One Voice Singing Festival in 2021 in collaboration with SSELP. The event was originally planned to have all the children together singing at Sheffield Hallam Sports Arena.

However, because of the pandemic, the children from all the SSELP school’s and others in

Sheffield, sang on a live link from their schools.

One class from Arbourthorne Primary school was chosen to sing at the changed venue of Sheffield Cathedral under the direction of event organiser Laura Steelyard.

More than 4,000 children took part in the festival from 42 different schools across

Sheffield. The children learnt five songs, some of them with Makaton signs and other actions.

All the children worked really hard to know the songs off by heart and be ready for the big live event on July 13 2021.

The children were following Laura’s directions from the Cathedral on their screens in school and could also see all the other children singing at the same time as them.

While it wasn’t as special as originally planned, the children still got that shared sense of

community that singing together brings and the knowledge that children from all across the city were learning and the singing the same songs as themselves, which is a powerful connection.

Most importantly, more than 4,000 children had fun singing shared songs that helped lift their spirits and left lots of smiling faces at the end.

Romans march in to praise active travel efforts Magnus the Roman soldier was joined by pupil Qasim and Paula to mark the event at Phillimore.

PUPILS from Phillimore have been presented with their Platinum Active Travel Award.

The prestigious award was made

by Paula who brought along a very special guest, Magnus the Roman soldier, who told the children all

about the very first environmental law that was written more than 2,000 years ago by Vitruvius who was played by pupil Qasim in assembly.

There are only 24 schools across the whole of Britain to have

achieved this award and Phillimore is proud to be one of them.

The school also scooped more than 30 scooters and helmets for boys and girls to enjoy during school. T!

awesome, personal challenges and circuits.

Skating in a Winter Wonderland The children enjoyed a once-ina-lifetime experience of having an outdoor ice skating rink at the school.

It was a great way for pupils to show off their pirouettes whilst being physically active in the fresh air.

Who knows, Prince Edward might have the next Torvill and Dean on their hands!

Children learnt all about the importance of their physical health, mental health and well-

being.

Sessions and assemblies included elements such as the significance of sleep; the awareness of reduced screen time and the essential value of being physically active.

Amazingly, the trainee doctors also had the children practising their yoga moves.

Prince Edward prides themselves on having some fantastic, modern exercise stations; a flood-lit sporting arena and active playtime facilities.

One of the school’s main goals is to ensure that children have a positive attitude towards being healthy and keeping physically active so that they can live a balanced, happy life. T!

Staff edge out pupils in times table challenge Report by Umar, Ryan, Evie, Yodahe and Hannah SCHOOL staff at Manor Lodge have scored their first victory over the children in the half-termly times-table challenge competition.

It was a stunning, closely-fought battle which went down to the final question.

The win, completed by deputy headteacher Mr Yates, was a first for the teachers’ team and sets up a tense final few games to determine the winners this year.

The competition started strongly for the children’s team as Isla (the first participant) mentioned got off to a good start.

“I felt nervous and excited,” she explained before the match-up.

She went on to score two points in quick succession against the teacher which roused the partisan crowd in the classroom.

It was then Klay’s turn to face the now desperate Mr Yates.

Fellow teacher-turned competition judge Mrs BellWilliamson shouted the question 12 times 12 and Mr Yates yelled an answer of one, four, four instead of one-hundred and forty-four.

“Not accepting this answer seemed strange,” he bemoaned.

“I’m not convinced there was a

Yates, known locally as a sore loser and even worse winner, seemed determined to succeed and took the next five points!

Just when Y4 were starting to give up, Jacob became their last hope! Before they knew it, Jacob was scoring points from every angle and the Y4 joy was increasing.

Screams of joy started to echo around the classroom stadium. In a tense finish, the question was 9x12 and it threw both Jacob and Mr Yates as they both shouted the wrong answer.

Jacob later reported, “It felt tense; I thought it was funny when he got the answer wrong.”

He continued, “I thought I had the opportunity to win, but I got the wrong answer too.”

In an attempt to stem the attack from the confident teacher, Zaid, a self-confessed times-table guru, got up next to challenge Mr Yates.

When Zaid scored 1 up on the tally chart, Mr Yates unleashed his own ‘secret weapon’ … Y6’s Umar.

Would you believe it? It was brother vs brother!

The game was getting more intense since each question resulted in a draw.

Mr Yates finally stepped back in to try to clinch the victory once and for all.

When reflecting back about having his own brother as his opposition, Zaid said, “I felt scared since he’s better at maths than me but I feel very excited because I never thought I’d draw against my older brother.”

The match continued as a draw, right up until the very last question…it was all to play for.

The final question (6x12) was right into the clutches of Mr Yates.

“It’s one of my favourite questions!” he beamed. He’d gone

Despite the loss, the Y4s are ready and waiting for a rematch at the end of the term.

HAVE you ever taught your own educator a lesson?

Well, unbelievably, a crew of Year 6s have had a lot of fun: they slammed a whole team of teachers!

The victory took place at a dodgeball tournament at High Hazels Academy.

Every year group from Year 4 to Year 6 took part with each named after a country such as Iraq, Belgium or England.

The winning team (France) won all six of their games and were rewarded with a game against their teachers.

During the first half, most of the students had already begun to feel defeat as the teachers played with

confidence and conviction, Mr Heath showing his experience with many superb throws and catches.

While the students were uneasy about playing against fully-grown adults, their confidence and motivation grew.

One player, Musa, raged that sceptics were gossiping that they had cheated their way to the final but was delighted to prove them wrong in the end.

By the start of the second half, the children came back with fire burning in them.

Although they may have been against teachers, they wanted the win and they were willing to fight for it.

They caught, threw and dodged like grown champions eventually

winning the game with a lastminute strike from David, France’s talisman.

One defeated teacher, Mr Sexton, lamented that he was embarrassed to be defeated by children one-third his age and promised to come back with an even stronger team next year.

Controversially, Mr Sexton confessed the teachers hadn’t taken the tournament seriously enough and had not even organised a training session.

Despite Mr Sexton’s protestations, most people in attendance would agree that the skills of Team France would have wiped the floor with any team of teachers any day of the week. T!

Super-tasty takeaway alternatives Chicken and Banana Korma This mild chicken curry is packed full of flavour and it’s healthier than a standard takeaway korma.

Prep: 20 mins Cook: 40 mins Serves: 4 Ingredients • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil • 500g skinless, boneless uncooked chicken breasts, chopped • 1 large onion, chopped • 1 apple, cored and chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed • 2 tablespoons korma curry paste • 400ml reduced-salt vegetable or chicken stock • 25g sultanas or raisins • 25g chopped ready-to-eat apricots • 300g easy-cook long grain brown rice • 1 tablespoon cornflour • 1 banana, sliced • 4 tablespoons low-fat, lowersugar plain yoghurt • 1 tablespoons fresh coriander, chopped (to garnish) • 1 pinch ground black pepper Method 1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan. Add the chicken, onion, apple and garlic, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often. Add the curry paste and cook for a few seconds, stirring.

Ingredients • 4 soft flour tortillas (wholewheat, if possible) • 4 tomatoes, chopped • 80g hard cheese, grated (reduced-fat, if possible) Swappable or optional • 1 red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced • 150g closed-cup mushrooms, sliced • 4 handfuls mixed salad leaves • 1 carrot, grated • 2 celery sticks, chopped • 3 teaspoons dried Italian mixed herbs (optional) • 1 pinch ground black pepper (optional) Method 1. Preheat the grill. Arrange the peppers and mushrooms on a baking sheet and grill them for 4 to 5 minutes, turning once. Add the tomatoes and herbs, then season with black pepper. Keep warm.

Information If you like, add a sliced banana to the frying pan with the lemon zest and juice, and mix with the apple before sharing between the pancakes.

Getting to grips with STEAM A POP-UP mobile makerspace delighted pupils from across all age groups at St Theresa’s Catholic Primary School.

Experts from the Maker{Futures} programme at the University of Sheffield set up a fantastic array of activities in the school hall for pupils to try just before the end of term.

A growing movement internationally, maker education provides children and young people with the skills, knowledge and habits of mind to make projects in relation to real world problems using both high- and low-tech tools, materials and technologies.

The makerspace provides playful and creative ways to develop digital and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills through a STEAM approach that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics with the arts.

St Theresa’s children learned about robotics and electrical circuits as well as other skills including programming and woodwork.
