LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear readers,

Welcome to our inaugural issue of Inspire, the Arts Magazine of Auburn High School.

We hope you enjoy the wonderful artwork created by our

students who so bravely submitted their art to be published.

Approximately a month ago, in mid-May, I half-jokingly suggested to my Graphic Design class that we should create a magazine as a final project to help them learn about editorial design. It would also provide an opportunity for our student artists to display and share their artwork, as they have missed out on art shows, community gallery events, and portfolio days as a result of the pandemic.

What you see before you is

almost three weeks of frantic hard work and learning-by-doing on the part of my Graphic Design students, many of whom were seniors. They showed their dedication right up until the day before graduation. I am proud of them, and I hope you will be, too.

We would love for this to become a new tradition at Auburn High School, so look for information about submitting artwork and joining in on the editorial process next school year.

I can't think of a better way to end the school year (particularly this one), than to take a moment to appreciate the aesthetics and creativity of our school arts community. Enjoy!

"SPIDER-LYNX"

Jesus Lopez-Duran 9th Grade Biology Spider-Lynx or known as Selena is the daughter of Harley Quinn and SpiderMan. Selena is unique at a young age, copying her mother; how she paints her face and her manners. Selena paints herself as a clown to show no weaknesses. Because of that, she doesn't have any friends. People think she’s weird and strange but she doesn't care because when she is SPIDER-LYNX she feels appreciated when she saves the day. As SPIDER-LYNX, she can lift cars, run and heal faster than most humans. She has two lives, her life as a strange girl and the one where she saves the day. Her alliance is being a hero she would see her dad SPIDER-MAN save the day and see how amazed and how great full everyone was. She chose to be a hero too because she notices that you're more welcomed and loved when you're good than when you're bad.

12th grade AP Studio art "SUBMERGED"

A representation of the artist's feelings at the moment and is the piece they had so much fun drawing, "I felt as if my joy was slowly being drowned in darkness." It was also their first time experimenting with acrylic paint on paper.

"DANCING FREE OF THOUGHT"

An abstract painting in which the artist is incredibly proud of. "I was able to truly let myself loose and not worry about mistakes while creating this. All I did was listen to music and follow my gut feeling. Of course I thought about the decisions I made however, I did not let my anxiety take over" 20

"OVERWHELMED"

In those moments where she finally feels free with the ability to “fly” away, She forcefully pulls back down into despair. The creature's lack of gender also represents how lost she feels. She no longer knows who she is and feels as if she is nothing.

She usually starts her dreams as herself but ends up as someone else. It is as if she is slowly losing herself.

"SPLITTING MIGRAINES"

"This digital artwork represented how dead I felt." The artist felt as though their soul was slowly being sucked out along with their motivation.

When they have migraines it leads to usually feel exhausted. Around this time, the artist felt all the negative effects of those migraines without actually having them.

"HOPELESSLY CONSUMED"

The artist received inspiration from a nightmare where her spirit was pulled back into the darkness. The artwork demonstrates her spirit form slowly being consumed into the thick and suffocating darkness. The darkness prevented her from breathing until it killed her. She used Gouache, acrylic, watercolor pencils, glaze medium, and a brown oil pastel for this piece.
