Enfants Terribles en Grote Meesters

aten we, in deze tijd waarin Nederland zucht onder zware bezuinigingen, eens lekker somber beginnen. Alles is al eens gedaan! Ziet u nog wel eens iets volkomen nieuws, iets wat aan niets en niemand is te relateren? Een donderslag bij heldere hemel? Nou? Of toch wel? Om heel eerlijk te zijn: elk jaar is het weer een flinke zoektocht.
En dan nu het goede nieuws. We zien misschien zelden compleet revolutionair theater, maar vaak genoeg voorstellingen die ons verrassen, met elementen die we nog nooit hebben gezien, althans nog nooit zó. Producties van makers die met originele ideeën losbreken uit bestaande vormen en aan de ketenen van tradities en genres rammelen. Wij zien het dus zo: niet alles is al eens gedaan, maar alles is ergens uit voortgesproten. Soms organisch en harmonieus, een enkele keer met enig functioneel geweld.

De laatste tijd is in de dans heel goed zichtbaar dat veel kunstwerken niet los van elkaar te zien zijn. Dus ook in Julidans. Dansmakers kijken om zich heen, verbinden zich met andere kunstvormen en bestaande kunstwerken. Dat klinkt misschien weinig spectaculair, maar ga eens naar CASSETTE van de Franse David Wampach. Hij legt een link tussen de lichtvoetige klassieke traditie (De Notenkraker) en de geplakte haren en glimlachjes van serieuze stijldansers. Wij hadden zoiets nog nooit gezien. Of een dergelijke voorstelling, op (of over?) de
rand van kitsch eigenlijk wel kan.... laten we graag aan uw oordeel over. Iemand die graag op het randje balanceert, is Dave St-Pierre. Hij klinkt het laatste deel van zijn trilogie over de liefde vast aan de twee voorgaande delen, die beide op Julidans te zien waren. Als coproducent brengt Julidans de wereldpremière van dit gekoesterde Enfant Terrible als openingsvoorstelling. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is hekkensluiter. Larbi (wij mogen hem zo noemen) is als regelmatig terugkerende gast van Julidans uitgegroeid tot Grote Meester. Hij liet zich inspireren door de geëngageerde Japanse mangatekenaar Osamu Tezuka. Op een heel andere manier verbindt oudgediende Marie Chouinard de ‘in kennelijke staat’ opgetekende droedels van de surrealist en mescalineliefhebber Henri Michaux (1899-1984) met live beweging. De Braziliaan Cristian Duarte haakt aan bij het schilderij The Hot One Hundred van Peter Davies en maakt zijn eigen top honderd van inspiratiebronnen: van Nijinsky en Pina Bausch tot Michael Jackson en Bruce Lee. Enzovoort, en zo verder. U ziet: alles heeft met alles te maken. De verbanden krijgen de ene keer meer nadruk dan de andere, maar relaties en dwarsverbanden zijn er. Wij nodigen u uit te komen kijken hoeveel moois daaruit is voortgekomen.

n these times, when the Netherlands is suffering the consequences of heavy spending cuts, let’s begin with a sombre picture. Everything has been done! Have you seen anything lately that is completely new, something that owes nothing to anything or anyone else? Totally out of the blue? Or have you? It involves quite a search to be perfectly honest.
And now for the good news. It may well be that we rarely see theatre that is completely revolutionary, but we do often see performances that surprise us, with elements that we’ve never seen before, at least not in the way they are presented. These are productions by makers who break out of existing forms with truly original ideas and rattle the chains of traditions and genres. So this is how we see it: not everything has already been done, but everything originated from something else, sometimes organically and harmonically, occasionally with some functional violence. The fact that many works of art must be seen in relationship to one another has become very apparent in dance of late. This is also true in Julidans. Dance makers look around; they connect with other art forms and existing works. That may sound less than spectacular, but take a look at CASSETTE by Frenchman David Wampach. He makes a connection between the lightfooted classical tradition (The Nutcracker) and the greased down hair and smiles of serious ballroom dancers. We had
never seen anything like it. If this kind of performance on the edge of kitsch is within or past the limits of the permissible is a judgement we gladly leave up to you. Someone who likes to balance on the edge is Dave St-Pierre. He hitches the last part of his trilogy to the previous two parts, both which were performed at Julidans. Julidans, in the role of co-producer, presents the world premiere of this cherished enfant terrible as the festival’s opening performance. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui closes the festival. Larbi (we may call him that) has achieved the status of Grand Master through his regular appearances at Julidans. He was inspired by the socially committed Japanese manga cartoonist Osamu Tezuka. Veteran Marie Chouinard makes a connection of a different variety between doodles drawn ‘under influence’ by surrealist and mescaline habitué Henri Michaux (1899-1984) and live movement. Brazilian Cristian Duarte picks up on the The Hot One Hundred by Peter Davies and makes his own top one hundred sources of inspiration: from Nijinsky and Pina Bausch to Michael Jackson and Bruce Lee. As you can see all things are connected. The connections are sometimes more emphasized, but there are always relationships and cross-references. We invite you to come and see the wonders that came from this cross-fertilization.
