WHAT IS BRAIN TUMOUR?

The abnormal development of brain cells into a mass or tumour is referred to as brain cancer. There are two types of brain tumours: normal (not cancerous) and malignant (cancerous).

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS

Headache, nausea, vomiting, seizures, memory issues, and alterations in mood, vision, or speech are all potential signs of a brain tumour.

CAUSES

Although the exact cause of brain tumour is not known, there are number of factors linked to increase risk of brain tumour.

Genetics

Ionizing radiation exposure

Environmental factors

Age and gender

HOW TO PREVENT?

Unfortunately, there is no known technique to stop brain tumours from developing. There are several actions you can do to lower your risk, though:

Reduce ionising radiation exposure: Make an effort to reduce the amount of X-rays, CT scans, and other ionising radiation you are exposed to.

Tobacco smoke and other substances that are known to cause cancer should be avoided if at all possible.

Consume a nutritious diet: Eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may lower the risk of having a brain tumour.

Regular physical exercise has been associated with a lower risk of various cancer forms, including brain tumours.

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

You should contact a doctor if you have any recurring symptoms that suggest a brain tumour, such as headache, nausea, vomiting, changes in mood or behaviour, weakness or numbness in the limbs, or seizures. Early detection is the key.
