A TRANSPORTATION HUB IN KALASIPALYAM

SITE LOCATION: Kalasipalyam, Bangalore, India

SITE AREA: 4,000 SqM (~1 Acres)

ACADEMIC PROJECT: Bachelor of Architecture

Semester 7 Design Studio (Individual work)

YEAR: August 2018 - December 2018

Bangalore is often envisioned as a product of futuristic structures of IT hubs, well-lit streets with cafés and pubs, and its infamous roads with a constant spread of traffic. But enveloped by these bright lights lies the heart of the city having a rather different aura altogether. Vibrant with colors, odours and the orderly chaos of the bustling crowd, this region treasures its cultural heritage rooting back to the beginning of the city. Despite contributing a great deal to city’s economy, this region, which was the foundation of the city is often overlooked and its historical background remains unknown to many.

The site is located amidst historic monuments such as the Bangalore Fort that was constructed by the founder of the city in the 16th century, the Tippu Sultan Palace that was constructed by the Islamic rulers who reigned in the 18th century, the Victoria Hospital and the famous flower market, KR Market established during the colonial period in the early 20th century. With a strong background in varied typologies and cultures, the site is expected to serve as the first point of welcome for migrant workers and tourists to the city and an intermediate transit point for local daily commuters.

The project is aimed to solve issues that have arisen by the continual practise of activities that were established over the past five centuries, in the current urbanized setting. Meeting requirements of today while sustaining age old practices among constraints such as overcrowding, vehicular traffic, unhygienic and unsafe environments were the main considerations while formulating the program for the site. Providing for a number of user groups and various activities without disrupting the existing transportation routes and its functionality was one of the key challenges that was tackled while designing this project.

A RECREATIONAL CENTRE FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

SITE LOCATION: Indiranagar, Bangalore, India

SITE AREA: 14,100 SqM (3.5 Acres)

ACADEMIC PROJECT: Bachelor of Architecture

Semester 8 Thesis Studio (Individual work)

YEAR: January 2019 - June 2019

Public recreational spaces are portrayed as a podium to celebrate the diverse inhabitants in a city and showcase its identity. But although these public spaces are meant to welcome everyone, there still remain certain user groups in minority who often find themselves at a discomfort while experiencing such spaces. One such user group is the visually impaired. Modern society has paved an alienated environment for this group by refusing to acknowledge them as abled human beings. They are denied equal opportunities and are forced to hide their existence among their shadows of the sighted population.

An insight into the lives of the blind population, upon encounters acquaintances with them, revealed a serious urge to take their own stand in the society and to prove their worth. Bangalore is home to several blind institutes that provide vocational and mobility training to help them attain jobs and make a living independent of any assistance. This project is intended not to add on to the existing typology of blind training institutes where they remain isolated from the general public but to provide alternative recreational facilities for their deserved leisure time.

The project is aimed to be an inversion of the usual, without the pre-dominance of the visual senses. The facility is intended to create an experience by celebrating the often neglected senses such as sound, haptic, and light and shadows. Focused on breaking the preconception of blindness as a disability, the proposal is directed in creating a cohesive environment encouraging mutual learning and interaction between the visually impaired and the sighted user groups. Enabling sensitivity rather than sympathy and highlighting their greater virtue and talents that were enhanced with the lack of sight.

Architecture must speak of its time and place, and this project explores trending innovative forms that are boundless, but also complement the beautiful landscape the site sits in. With public amenities in the lower levels, enveloped under a raised undulating landscape, the housing modules soar on the higher levels, capturing views of the hilly terrain surrounding the site.

The housing modules are designed as villas that comprise of each of the sharing units required, with a common lounge area and dining. This concept was developed to enhance the homely appeal and to encourage community interactions. Each villa module allows room for individual creativity and is flexible in use according to the residents’ requirements.

Komal Menda

Located in between a vast farmland in the outskirts of the city Bangalore, Mr. Raghu’s residence displays grandeur and richness, the depths of which are enclosed by a thoughtful composition of the external skin. Inspired by the planning of traditional courtyard houses, this project features private leisure spaces. An enclosed landscaped court surrounded by overlooking bedrooms and common spaces on three sides proves to be the most important feature by becoming the main focal point from any point of the house. Furthermore, pergolas and grilles for fenestrations display a dramatic play of light and shadows during daytime.
