Dr. S. Srikanta Sastri Gold Medal for student scoring highest marks in Ancient Indian History or Cultural History of Karnataka (in M. A. Course) Prof S. Srikanta Sastri, the well-known Historian was felicitated by the then Vice Chancellor Prof D. Javare Gowda at University of Mysore on 15.01.1973 in Humanities auditorium, Manasa Gangotri, Mysore. This grand function was attended by such luminaries as Dr S. R. Rao, Sri Thi. Tha. Sharma, Dr M. Sheikh Ali, Dr T. V. Venkatachala Sastry and Dr B. R. Gopal. The Festschrift “Srikanthika” was released by Dr T. V. Mahalingam – the renowned Professor of History from Madras University. Dr S. Srikanta Sastri was presented with a purse of Rs. 75,000.00/-, which he immediately presented back to the University of Mysore to institute a Gold Medal for the student scoring the highest marks in “Ancient Indian History” (M. A. History) or “Cultural History of Karnataka” (M. A. Kannada) during the academic year. “Dr S. Srikanta Sastri Gold Medal” was first given in 1974 and the last student to receive was Sri Pranesh Koulagi (M. A. in Kannada) in 2004. The University of Mysore had exhausted the corpus fund and hence no student was given Gold Medal after 2004.
Prof S. Naganath, second son of Dr S. Srikanta Sastri after a long-drawn correspondence with the University of Mysore, managed to obtain the above information through RTI (Right To Information Act). The Assistant Registrar (Administration), University of Mysore addressed a letter to Prof S. Naganath dated 27.01.2017 requesting him to deposit Rs. 1,00,000.00/- with the Finance Officer, so that “Dr S. Srikanta Sastri Gold Medal” could be revived.
