The BIG Re-think Tectonic Materiality of Interior Elements

Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel

Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain, Aparajita Basu

Assistants: Jay Odharia, Jhanavi Parikh

Brief Outline:

The Big Rethink is a series of postgraduate interior design studios focused on developing a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments within the interior design field.

This semester, the fourth one in the series, the studio challenges the concept of Tectonic Materiality of interior elements. It offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior elements and tectonic materiality through experience, organization and construction. The studio focuses on representing experiential and ephemeral qualities, planning and organising strategies, detailing and construction techniques, exploring the relationship of interior elements and tectonic materiality.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to:

Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. Ability to translate/represent the design argument/position/ approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position.

Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Rietveld Schroder House

Architect: Gerrit Rietveld

Year : 1925

Location : Utrecht, The Netherlands

Process:

The Schroder House is the only building that was designed in complete accordance with the De Stijl style, which was marked by primary colors and pure ideas.

The two-story house contains a transformable kitchen/dining/ living area, studio space and reading room on the bottom, and the second floor contained bedrooms and storage space, only separated by portable partitions. The flexibility of space meant that there was no hierarchical arrangement of rooms in the floor plan. The collapsable walls upstairs positioned around a central staircase were designed to provide the children with an option of pushing the partitions in during the day for an open play space and closing them at night for private bedrooms. The three criteria given by Mrs. Schroder about the rooms for her kids stated that a bed should be able to fit in two different positions, each room should have access to the water supply and drainage, and all should have a door to access the outdoors directly.

Current modern practices through a project representing a ‘Standardization’ Process:

A perspective play portrayed in a defined construct using different materials through juxtaposition of its properties as well as an artistic integration in order to suffice the aesthetical qualities of a volume . Hierarchial development through space making is achieved by creating multiple levels which lead on to other spaces in the same construct using staircases, bridges and most importantly the aspect of visual play is focused through the functionality of an element as well as a holistic approach towards the construct.

Creating an Interior design of only in terior elements excluding the architec tural aspects of the model. Here the element from Role 2 is de veloped further and designed a spiral staircase which will also shelter the Da Vinci dream machines as an dual purpose element. The joineries are simple and durable than any other complicated ones.

Forward:

Materials and its details, where one gets along with another, there is a unique identity created with each element designed. Versatility engages itself when different materials are integrated into a whole. Carlo Scarpa’s usage of material is a great example of how two material can integrate together to give a whole new expression to the volume as well as to the individual element.

Tectonics expressed through precision detail, a delicate combination of joinery, properties of each individual material and craftsmanship creates an analogous approach towards designing an element which in turn creates a volumetric perception of the space. Elements as a single identity is different when compared to the same put in a space. Elements defines the space quality, if materials used in creating the element has a certain expression again the dynamics changes. If two different materials integrate together, it changes the functionality of the element. Adaptability, versatility, hierarchy of each individual element helps in creating a language through which a space is constructed from various parameters and constraints. The different materials usage can be just a small element as a joinery detail or a total structure where the secondary material is just used for aesthetic purposes. But what if the integration of material is so encompassed to that, it creates a contrast or a harmony through which it’s perceived, it might be different for different users with respect to the context and its surroundings.

Manipulation of the same while keeping in mind of the physical properties of materials, helps in incorporating the juxtaposition of materials. Multiple typologies can be pursued while implementing the design. Stratification of materials can also change the dynamics of the element in turn changing the outlook of the constructed space. Hierarchy and aesthetical value becomes crucial in order to attain the eye of the user, but keeping in mind of the constraints of the constructed volume through which different functions can be used and complements in the same volume. -Carlo
