The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp

Message from our Executive Directors Our JCCs are in an unprecedented phase of growth, paving the way to both an exciting new chapter in our history and a bright future. In their own unique ways, each JCC has become a hub of community engagement and the centre for Jewish life. Our “J”s have become destinations for people to live up to their aspirations and dreams...to learn, grow, to stay in shape, and put themselves and their families on paths to meaningful lives. We are very pleased to announce that our membership continues to climb at a healthy rate, our Daycares and Preschools are at or nearing capacity and the Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp has cemented itself as the premier Jewish day camping option throughout the city. We are also excited to unveil an enhanced program lineup, designed to meet the needs of all ages. These exciting additions include; a new arts and culture department, TRIBE team training (small group :itness training), KidFit (group exercise classes focused on children) at the Schwartz/Reisman Centre, the expansion of Kachol Lavan and JRoots to the Prosserman JCC, the introduction of our new J school of Israeli dance, and more house league and elite sport offerings than ever before!

These enhancements were driven by conversations that you’ve had with our dedicated sta:f team. We value all of your suggestions and insights that are provided through surveys, run-ins around the JCCs and through all of our events. Your thoughts and opinions are invaluable as we are consistently trying to achieve our mission to provide your family with meaningful and well rounded experiences.

Tradition. Culture. Education. Inclusion. These are the principles that guide us. It’s what you can expect from every program and every employee of the JCC. Welcome to the community. We’re happy to have you. Our children, teens and family programs range from new-mom get-togethers and children’s birthday parties right up to computer programming courses for teens. And we’re extremely proud to offer two community drop-in programs so anyone can come by and see what’s happening. Whatever your children are into, at the J, you’ll find a way to help them get better at it.

With all of the exciting developments, it is with pride that we also present to you the Fall 2014-Winter 2015 program guides, complete with a new look and feel. Each book captures the energy and warmth, while showcasing the opportunities and possibilities that exist within the “J”s. Our goal was to capture that with our new branding, and to show you that there is truly something special about this place. Looking forward to seeing you around the “J”s. B’Shalom

Housed in the David and Esther Freiman Childhood Education Centre, this program helps children maximize their self-expression and reach their full academic and social potential while connecting to Jewish traditions. Through creative and hands-on experiences, we create an educational and cultural environment to support the development of each child’s social, cognitive, language and motor skills. Our interactive curriculum is founded upon the richness of Jewish values and tradition. We incorporate the Hebrew language and place emphasis on Tzedakah, welcoming guests, acts of kindness and Tikun Olam. Shabbat and holidays are also a large part of our curriculum and are taught through literature, music, exploration and play. We are pleased to offer children and families full access to all of our facilities and programming including music and dance to sports and art. Our extended hours meet the needs of working parents.

daycare and preschool - full day programs (7:30 am - 6:00 pm) Toddlers (ages 18 months - 30 months) The multi-sensory hands-on curriculum for our youngest students introduces fun, educational activities vital to development. We use art to encourage curiosity, build language and social skills, and develop fine motor skills — and our sensory activities and simple games encourage counting and recognition skills. Jewish component: We use Jewish holiday and Shabbat celebrations to introduce simple Hebrew words, blessings and songs, as well as day-to-day conversation. Preschool – Full-Day Program (ages 2.5 - 3 years) The preschool rooms focus on building independence and problem-solving skills. The education/recreation balance stimulates a variety of cognitive, fine and gross-motor skills that lead to pre-reading and pre-numeracy readiness. Jewish component: The Hebrew vocabulary begins to take shape, and Jewish values are introduced through Shabbat and holidays and day-to-day conversations.

Nursery Daycare (ages 3 - 4 years) This curriculum stresses self-esteem and social development. It includes many prereading activities, as well as free expressive art to enhance fine motor development. Jewish component: Counting in Hebrew is introduced, along with the Aleph Bet. Jewish holidays, traditions and Shabbat celebrations continue to be meaningful experiences.

Unique to the Prosserman JCC Daycare & Preschool – Sheva The SHEVA framework is a way to think about Jewish values and how we incorporate them in the education that we provide to the children at the Prosserman JCC. Sheva is an initiative of the Jewish Community Centre Association of North America which we are proud to be affiliated with. Sheva helps us to look at our curriculum through a Jewish lense to ensure that our program reflects Jewish values such as mitzvah, tzedakah, community, respect, peace and inquiry as it pertains to children’s learning in this instance.

Junior Kindergarten (ages 4 - 5 years) Both Ontario Kindergarten Program and Early Learning For Every Child guidelines inform this program, which focuses on literacy, numeracy and fine motor-skill development. Jewish component: Hebrew is offered twice a week to further enhance the values of Tzedakah, holiday traditions and vocabulary. Senior Kindergarten (ages 5 - 6 years) Guided by teachers and informed by the Ontario Kindergarten Program and Early Learning For Every Child guidelines, students embark on word recognition, begin to read and start preparing for life in primary school. Their curiosity is challenged through exposure to enrichment units, such as science and current events. Jewish component: “Seeing the World through Jewish Eyes” is the focus for the celebrations of the Jewish holidays and traditions. Hebrew continues to be offered twice a week and Hebrew vocabulary is expanded through storytelling.

Special Programs For Children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis We offer one of the more comprehensive programs for children on the autism spectrum, made possible by the Lily and Michael Rosenberg Philanthropic Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto. We use the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis, a safe and effective way to teach skills. The instructor’s role is to facilitate the group based on the program goals. It is not a consultative approach. At the end of the session, participants will receive a written progress report based on the program goals. Learners will be grouped into a maximum of 8 on their individual skills and ability levels. Social Skills Groups The goal of these programs is to build children’s social and recreational skills in a safe environment while providing every participant the opportunity to identify and expand on their individual talents. Early Learners (ages 4 - 9 years, 8 students) Designed for lower-functioning children, this group’s activities target basic social practices like returning greetings and tolerance for others to help promote talking, sharing and self-expression. Activities like art and interactive games build the children’s recreational and fine motor skills.

Intermediate (ages 10 - 15 years, 8 students) This group focuses on initiating and maintaining simple conversations; joining and leading activities; cooperation; handling conflicts with positive strategies and functional communication; increasing tolerance; and prosocial behaviours such as helping out and showing empathy for others.
