Principal’s Message

Dear Friends,

With a busy year behind us, we have begun our 61st year with just as much energy as the previous 60. Our students and teachers are excited to continue the St. Pius X traditions we are known for while keeping the educational standard top notch. With a new year and a renewed energy, we keep our mission in mind throughout our weekly activities: St. Pius X High School, with its roots in the Catholic Parish, is a co-educational school, which educates young people to their full academic potential and enhances their growth of Catholic values and principles to serve the Church and community. Through a diverse and challenging curriculum, as well as an environment commanding excellence, St. Pius X High School strives to instill in every student an attitude of lifelong learning in the development of their spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical gifts. You cannot find the educational environment that we offer at St. Pius X at any other high school in the Northland. Our focus is Christ centered each and every day. Along with this comes high expectations for student achievement and behavior. Our students want to learn. Our students want to be surrounded by others who want to learn. Our students want to have faith in their lives. Our students want to be surrounded by others who want to have faith in their lives. With this formula in place, I am convinced we are the best option, and always will be, for high school students. Your support helps us remain successful each and every year. THANK YOU. Thank you for helping us to create a strong educational environment for our students. Thank you for contributing to our Annual Fund, Scholarship Fund, Endowment Fund, and Capital Campaign. Thank you for praying for our teachers, students, and alums. Thank you for valuing the St. Pius X education and tradition. As we continue to preserve the traditions in which St. Pius X High School is grounded, we also pledge to be good stewards of every dollar you give to our wonderful school. 100% of your donations benefit our students directly through scholarship assistance, operating costs, or building enhancements. This newsletter and report is full of the past year’s progress with capital projects, fundraising and our recent student achievements. Thank you again for your continued support and please continue to keep our school and students in your prayers. Sincerely, Joseph Monachino, Jr. Principal

The Class of 2017 In the past 60 years, many great students have passed through our doors. We take pride in each class, and its lasting impact on St. Pius X and our community. The Class of 2017 is no exception. It’s hard to describe a class in one word, but if we had to, that word would be “Genuine.” This Class of 2017 encapsulates intriguing, captivating, and charismatic students. They encompass the word GENUINE through their sincere, thoughtful, and authentic behaviors in the classroom, in athletics, as leaders, and as ambassadors. The largest graduating class in 36 years, this class of 113 students has maintained the academic excellence previous classes have demonstrated. The class will earn over $4.5 million in scholarships to colleges and universities. There are 10 Missouri Bright Flight Scholars, students scoring 29 or higher on the ACT. The students at the top of the class are Valedictorian Madeleine Quinn and Salutatorians Natalie Denzer and Tristan Ott. Besides achieving superior academic excellence, these three have participated in various sports and school organizations, and all three were inducted into the National Honor Society. Madeleine was honored as one of Missouri’s Top 100 Scholars; she will continue her education at Loyola Marymount University in California.

community. As outstanding role models for underclassmen, they have been remarkable in promoting school spirit, faith formation, team chemistry, and support for one another. From going to the March for Life in Washington D.C., organizing ministry to the homeless, resurrecting the SPX Pep Club, travelling to Guatemala on mission trips, and involving themselves in street ministry with the homeless, they have been leaders all the way. They have multiple extracurricular successes as well. Sean Bryant, Sydney Gardner, Sara Koster, Arcadia Mejia, Caroline Ramsey, Joe Ross, and Sara Watson competed at the State Music Festival. For the first time is the school’s history, the Women’s Basketball team finished second in State. Abby Hipp received the prestigious DiRenna Award honoring the top female basketball player in the KC Metro area. Natalie Denzer received the Barrett Wepler Academic Award, honoring the top basketball female scholar athlete. Abby will play basketball for Missouri State University and Natalie for William Jewell. Along with them, 8 other SPX graduates have signed to play at the collegiate level. As we send each of our graduates to their next endeavor, we send our prayers and well wishes for their continued success, honored that they are a part of our St. Pius X Alumni Family!

These students genuinely care about their school, each other, and the

Campaign News

Progress Continues $5.3 Million Raised

As we celebrated our 60th Anniversary

Year, improving our facilities was a major focus. Just last fall, we announced the $7 Million Campaign to renovate the former Convent and build an Athetlic Complex on 45 acres south of our campus. The renovation of the former convent is complete with Choir, Art, Yearbook, Newspaper, Broadcasting, and The Catholic Radio Network all settled in to the Fine Arts & Activity Center. The landscape is beautiful, with finishing touches being made on the outdoor classroom spaces and grotto. A variety of teachers have already been able to move outside for

4

an hour or two to hold a class in the outdoor classroom settings. Construction began at the new 45 Acre Athletic Complex south of the St. Pius X campus in the Spring of 2017. The new Athletic Complex will provide facilities for the sports we currently do not have practice and playing space for at our campus: track, baseball, softball, tennis, cross country and soccer. Currently, the fields are being seeded and electrical, water, irrigation, and drainage is being installed. After final grading and land preparation, the track and tennis courts will be prepared for surface installation.

“It’s exciting to see the progress at the fields. At this point, it looks like we will be able to use the track and tennis courts in the spring. We are excited to keep our students close to campus after school and hope, with the help of our community, that we are able to complete the rest of fields very soon,” commented Principal Joe Monachino, Jr. The rest of the fields will be completed as funds become available. Thank you to all of our wonderful donors who have made this project possible (listed on page 21-22). With your assistance, campus improvements will help us continue to remain strong and attract future generations of Warriors!

Donor Match Underway

Since the Campaign was announced in 2016, $5.3 of the $7 Million goal has been raised. In May, a generous donor offered a match of all funds raised through November 13th. To date, $360,000 has been raised as a part of that match. If you would

like to contribute to the Campaign, now is the time to double your donation!

Celebrating our Volunteers

An Evening of Gratitude

Joe Monachino, Jr. honoring past and present Giuseppe Sarto Recipients: Jesse & Phyllis Volz Valenciano, Robert Ringel, Jim Schulenberg, Gary Schmitz, Savina Balano Lee, Bill Duensing, Jr., Mike & Dana Baker Schwartz, Warren Robertson, Les Whisler, Greg Ringel, Mary King Scott and Al & Susan Hoffman Christifano.

As we ended the 16-17 school year, we were blessed to honor our

volunteers in a new space - The Logan Banquet Room - on the top floor of the Fred & Rosalie Ross Fine Arts & Activity Center. The beautiful new space held the 150+ attendees that not only came to celebrate our wonderful volunteers, but also to send off retiring teacher Gary Schmitz. Affectionately known as Schmitty, he taught thousands of students since he began his career at St. Pius X in 1976. He served in many roles over the years -- teacher, coach, fan, athletic director, volunteer, mentor, etc. Everyone will miss seeing Gary on a daily basis, but we know he will forever be a Warrior and we look forward to seeing him at games and events. Gary, along with outgoing School Board President, Les Whisler, were both honored with the Giuseppe Sarto Award for their long term dedication to St. Pius X. Les served six years on the School Board, three as President. Under his leadership, the board completed a Strategic Plan

and St. Pius X launched a $7 Million Capital Campaign. Thank you, Les, for your volunteerism and leadership throughout the years. Shelley Pileggi and Mark Huke from the Class of 1968 were honored with the 2017 Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award. Both Mark and Shelley are dedicated volunteers who have served as Alumni Class Reps, Callers and Chairs throughout the years. They, along with Steve Schmidt, chaired our 50th Anniversary festivities with an Alumni Open House and Reception. Shelley also served on our Board of Directors. We are grateful to Mark and Shelley for keeping St. Pius X close to their heart for so many years, and cheerfully volunteering their time to keep our school strong. We are also grateful to the entire Class of 1968 who take their calls and say YES year after year. A special thank you to all who came to the event and to Jimmy Cascone (72) and Cascone’s Restaurant for the wonderful food!

I would like to thank all the people who offered their congratulations on my recent retirement. I received many well wishes from faculty and staff, former and current students, parents, and friends. Whether a hug, handshake, card, email, or gift, I am blessed to be honored by so many. The St. Pius X community will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks again, Gary Schmitz 6

SPX Booster Club Alumni, parents and friends of St. Pius X High School have been meeting throughout the summer to form a Booster Club that will support and promote all sports and activity groups at St. Pius X. They kicked off the 2017-2018 school year by hosting the 34th Annual Tommy Simone Youth Football Tournament on August 19th. The football tournament hosted 25 youth football teams, ranging in age from 3rd to 8th grades. Our campus was full of excitement all day and the teams were greeted with St. Pius hospitality. Thank you to all who are helping to form the Booster Club and everyone who spent the day working at the Simone Tourney. We look forward to the next Booster Club event! Student Summer News As the students return to school in

the fall, we celebrate summer accomplishments. Again this year, we had a large group of students and parents go to Guatemala for a week to serve those in need by building stoves and water filtration systems. Students also attended several other educational and leadership institutes and camps throughout the summer months. Kate Pluenneke attended Girls State and Zac Racy attended Boys State. “My experience at Boys State was very beneficial. I learned more about my interests and future goals as well as gaining an understanding about my role in society,” commented Zac Racy. Andrew Hipp attended West Point’s Summer Prospect Camp. This was the second year he attended and was named best upperclassman tight end and defensive lineman at the camp. Several students attended and assisted at Camp Savio, a local Catholic youth camp. “I attended Camp Savio as a middle schooler and it has been a huge part of my faith formation; it’s my pleasure to now give my time back as a counselor. Plus, it’s the most enjoyable part of my summer!” said Olivia DiMaggio.

Warrior Classic Golf Benefit

June 6, 2017

With plenty of food, beverages and a beautiful day to be on the course, The Warrior Classic Golf Benefit once again delivered a fun day for the SPX Community. The tournament is held at the Deuce at the National in early June each year. Golfers begin their day with Scimeca’s Italian Sausages hot off the grill, Hiland ice cream bars, and plenty of cold beverages. Tee-off is at noon. As they finish, Pizza Shoppe has made a delivery and they enjoy dinner while waiting for the scores to be tabulated. Funds are primarily raised through sponsorships and player fees. There are also mulligans and raffle tickets to purchase the day of the event. All of the food and beverages are donated which helps keep costs down. Proceeds from the Golf Tournament help offset the costs of the new tuition discounts offered to families this year. This year was the first school year that we implemented tuition discounts for alumni, tithing parishioners and large families. Thank you to everyone who supported the 26th Annual Golf Benefit. We are so grateful to all of our players, sponsors, and volunteers for helping us raise nearly $35,000 to benefit St. Pius X High School.

Please consider supporting those businesses that support SPX! The golf sponsors are listed on page 21.

2017 Alumni Trophy Winners: Steve Messina (81), Chris Beaubien (14), Larry Messina (73), and Trey Keilbey

These tuition discounts were created by the Board of Directors beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. Funds are raised to off-set the cost of providing the discounts, called the “Fill the Gap” Campaign. Proceeds from the 2017 Golf Tournament were directed to the Fill the Gap Campaign as well. Thank you to everyone who supported the Warrior Classic and the Fill The Gap Campaign directly. Your assistance ensures that we can continue to offer tuition discounts to our school families.

Genevieve Berg Memorial The Kansas City Collection was created in memory of Mrs. Genevieve Berg, SPX English Teacher. Mrs. Berg taught for 25 years at St. Pius X (1957-1982). She was the head of the English Department for 18 of those years. English literature, particularly the works of Shakespeare, was her passion. Throughout her years at St. Pius X, she spent hours dedicated to numerous extra-curricular activities. She choreographed school musicals, took students on field trips to plays, served as a cheerleading sponsor, helped start a parents’ booster club and planned graduation ceremonies and awards banquets. She once said: “Whatever they needed to have done and didn’t have anyone to do, I did it.” In 1982, the year she retired, she was awarded the Giuseppe Sarto Award for outstanding service to the school. Mrs. Berg passed away in January of 2017. With memorial donations from friends and family, Mrs. Berg’s family chose to continue her legacy by providing students long-lasting resources in the form of books. The Kansas City Collection represents books intended for research into the ethnic and general histories of Kansas City. It will be cherished for years to come by the St. Pius X and greater Kansas City communities.

Remembering Sister Regina Mary Link, SCL Sr. Regina Mary Link, SCL passed away on June 4, 2017, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, KS. As her obituary reads and many alumni will remember, “she was a quiet, gentle woman of faith with a heart of gold.” Sr. Regina Mary, or “Sr. Mary Library” as we have heard her called, was the librarian for a combined 23 years at St. Pius X. She began her service to SPX in 1965 as librarian and religion teacher. She then served schools in Montana from 1968 to 1977 when she returned to St. Pius X, where she stayed until her retirement in 1997. She was presented the Giuseppe Sarto Award in 1995 for her dedication to students and St. Pius X. In addition, when the school was

renovated in the late 1990’s, the library was named in her honor. An excerpt from the SartoNews Summer 1995, honoring Sr. Regina Mary: “Sr. Regina Mary is a most worthy recipient of an award that recognizes dedication to students, Catholic education, leadership, and service to schools and community. As an invaluable resource person to students and staff, and the resident school historian, sister lives out these qualities in many ways. She co-sponsors the Academic Team, compiles alumni news for “Focusing on PiHi grads”, and keeps the school’s audio visual equipment in good working order. Sister, St. PIus’ number 1 fan, can always be found in the stands cheering the Warriors on. What Sister calls hobbies (recycling, reading and gardening/ yardwork) seem to the rest of the St. Pius X community, to be areas of great service. She seldom misses a tidbit in the newspapers about members of the St. Pius X community and keeps everyone informed. She often shares her reading “finds” related to education and specific subject matter with appropriate staff persons. The walk from her apartment to SPX always includes collecting aluminum cans, trash, or pulling a few weeds along the way. Aluminum can receptacles around the school are placed and emptied in large part by Sr. Regina Mary. Most of the green plants in school know the loving touch of her green thumb. Dozens of dieffenbachia plants have been sprouted by a single plant by Sister.

From June 2010 Appreciation Dinner - Jean Trapp (Deceased Sept. 2016), Sr. Mary Sharon Verbeck, and Sr. Regina Mary Link. All past Giuseppe Sarto Honorees.

12

Most deserving of the Giuseppe Sarto Award, Sr. Regina Mary lives out her love of God, for humanity, and for St. Pius X in all she does.”

Ways to Give to St. Pius X Fundraising is essential to our success as an institution dedicated to developing our students to be life-long learners, have respect for others, be team players and give back to their community. Listed below are the numerous opportunities that you can choose to support St. Pius X. It is only with the support of our constituencies that we have been able to carry out our mission throughout our history. Annual Fund - An organized effort to secure gifts on an annual basis to supplement the budget and to bridge the gap between what we charge for tuition and what it actually costs to educate each student. Each year, 5% of our Annual Fund is contributed to our Endowment Fund. Scholarship Fund - Need based Financial Aid is available to families attending St. Pius X. Families may apply for Financial Aid annually and each year awards are made based upon the overall need of each family. A gift to the Scholarship Fund helps enable students whose families struggle financially to attend SPX. Capital Campaign - The Warrior Pride Capital Campaign will raise funds to renovate the former convent and create an Athletic Complex near our Campus. Please see pages 4-5 for detailed information. Endowment Fund - Currently we have nearly $3 million in our Endowment. Interest from the Endowment enables us to make payments on the tax exempt bonds that were sold to finance capital improvement projects. Gifts to the Endowment Fund can be made as a multi-year pledge or a one-time gift. Fill The Gap - The Fill The Gap Campaign is an annual pledge drive that allows families to make a tax-deductible donation to SPX to allow us to keep the cost of tuition down. St. Pius X offers a variety of tuition discounts (alumni, tithing parishioners, large family, etc.). The Fill The Gap Campaign directly offsets those discounts. Matching Gifts - Your gift to St. Pius X could be doubled or even tripled, through a corporate matching gift program. To determine if your company offers this benefit, please contact your human resources office.

Alumni Tree of Life - For a gift of $300, you may place your deceased love one’s name on a leaf on the tree. This allows your loved one to be remembered throughout the year at St. Pius X, as well as during our annual Alumni Commemoration Mass. This donation can be made over a multi-year pledge or a one-time gift. It is an excellent way to remember your loved one and help St. Pius X at the same time. Donations will benefit the St. Pius X Endowment Fund. Events - Each year there are annual fundraising events hosted by SPX, the Parent Association, and student organizations. Two of the large annual fundraising events are the Parent Association Auction and the Warrior Classic Golf Benefit. The Parent Association event is held the first Saturday of February. Proceeds from this event are designated for projects that benefit the students above and beyond those budgeted by the school. The Warrior Classic Golf Benefit is held each year in June. Proceeds from the Golf Tournament go directly toward the Fill the Gap Campaign. Planned Giving or Memorial Gifts - You may designate St. Pius X for memorial gifts or create a memorial scholarship when a loved one passes. Although this decision comes at a difficult time, considering this in advance makes it easier and gives you time to think about what program or activity you wish the memorial gifts to benefit. You can also make a bequest in to St. Pius X in your will or trust.

Memorial Scholarships - Eddie Garcia Memorial Scholarship, Dena McMillin Memorial Scholarship, Ted & Mary Lillian Polito Citizens Scholarship, Robertson Scholarship, Joanna Valenciano Memorial Scholarship, Richard Walter Scholarship, Tim Werkowitch Scholarship, Colin Whisler Memorial Scholarship, Ruben Yanez Scholarship

Pillars of St. Pius X - The St. Pius X Pillar Wall is a great way to honor your parents or a former teacher or coach that played an important part in your life. For a donation of $500, you may place parents’ names or that special teacher or coach on our “Pillars of St. Pius X” wall in the atrium entry hall of the school. The gift is tax-deductible and can be a multi-year pledge or one-time gift. Consider saying thanks to that special someone by giving them a gift that will benefit the St. Pius X Endowment Fund.

We have tried to make this report as accurate as possible. If you have any questions or comments, please call the St. Pius X Advancement Office at 816-453-3450. This listing includes donations made between July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017.
