Teller County Guide an introduction

I brought some of my relatives from Kansas up Ute Pass to visit this area that’s become so dear to my heart. They were awestruck.

The scenic trip up the pass dotted by picturesque towns like Green Mountain Falls, Chipita Park and Cascade. The vibrancy and charm of Teller County’s largest city, Woodland Park. Lovely Divide, the portal to the mining camps. The geologic wonders of Florissant. The moment-in-time snapshot from more than a century ago that is Victor. And finally, the confluence of rich history and modern fun in Cripple Creek.

Past and present coexist seamlessly here. Few places can make such a boast. Through

the wonderment of my kinfolk, I was reminded of how much I appreciate this area myself.

Here, we cherish what was while keeping open minds and open arms to what can be.

Is it any wonder that so many people visit? Is it any wonder that so many wish to stay?

In this annual magazine, we offer visitors and locals alike a sampling of where they can eat, drink, play and even work in Teller County. Of course, there are so many options in each of these categories that it is unrealistic to try to list them all.

Remember when the Ice Festival was the lone winter attraction? When in the winter we were mostly a way stop for eager recreationalists on their

way to the ski slopes.

No more. Ice Castles, the Victor Troll and the opening of the palatial Chamonix Hotel and Casino has made the area a year-round destination.

For work, Teller County has an eclectic mix of small businesses like Anderson Enterprises and the PBJ Ranch along with larger employers like Charis Bible College and the Cripple Creek and Victor Mine. In addition, there are many jobs available among the bustling Cripple Creek gaming and hospitality industry.

There is no shortage of places to play. Natural wonders like Florissant Fossil Beds and Mueller State Park are enjoyed by thousands each year. Zeb’s

can help you with the gear to make the most of your outing in the wild. The historic Butte Theater is a treat, as-is Woodland Park’s famous dinosaur center and the Lowell Thomas Museum in Victor.

Colorado is famous for its brewpubs and other places to get a libation and relax. Teller County has a good variety of such establishments and some amazing views to go with them like 110 Reserve and Over Ice. You want food? Everywhere you turn there are amazing options. We’ve touched on a few here, but for a broader view, check out our “Teller County Guide” magazine.

WORKING IN PARADISE

AN INSIDE LOOK AT SOME OF THE TOP BUSINESSES IN TELLER COUNTY

Anderson Enterprises, Inc.:

Innovating to meet a need

Interpretation of the old English proverb “necessity is the mother of invention’ can be construed to mean: when the need arises, one is likely to be inspired to come up with a solution.

Carl Anderson of Anderson Enterprises, Inc. identified a particular need for the efficient printing of architectural blueprints to make his construction business more responsive and, in the process, created a new company to provide multiple services for the community.

“My primary company is construction,” Anderson said, adding that 2024 celebrates his 20th year in Teller County as a full-service construction company with a commitment to the very highest building standards, quality and craftsmanship.

Anderson Enterprises specializes in custom home building, having grown to serve the needs of both residential and

commercial industry; from custom homes and commercial properties, to remodels, additions, decks and complete office rebuilds.

According to Anderson, during the planning and organization stages of design, bringing a vision to fruition requires acute attention to detail through architectural and engineering plans. Since plans are the foundation of construction and key to ordering materials, setting timelines making modifications, and determining costs, Anderson says it is crucial to have blueprints early on in the process.

“Having blueprints helps to make the construction process run smoothly and I was having trouble getting blueprints printed with a quick turnaround. When a customer sends me a PDF and wants to talk about (the project), I need the blueprints in my hands,” Anderson said.

Thus began the genesis of ABC Printing, or Anderson Blueprint and Copies Printing.

24, provides printing and copy services for a wide array of tasks including custom print jobs including business cards, books, pamphlets, instruction manuals, posters, photo and art printing, resume’s, reports and, being key to Anderson’s ability to conduct his own construction business, blueprints. The shop also offers Notary, photo prints to digital, scanning, Email, shredding, and a growing number of other services.

“Dalton (David), is our primary person at the print shop. He figures it all out and provides artwork and design consultations,” Anderson said. Dalton has been with ABC Printing since 2021.

Another important note emphasized by Anderson is their commitment as a locally based company to the hiring and retention of local employees. Currently they employ up to 16 people.

“Our crews live, shop, and raise their families right here in Colorado. We care about the growth and health of our communities and frequently contribute our skills and services in numerous community activities and projects for the benefit and advancement of the very areas in which we live,” states the website.

Additionally, the company is “always looking for those individuals who are interested in entering the construction field and want to get started in a construction career.”

Anderson said in order to accommodate their growing business, they further deepened their roots for and purchased the building on Highway 24 several years ago for expansion.

Looking at future prospects, Anderson says “What we do is solid. We are always adapting, improving and innovating to make our company more efficient and to make our projects run more smoothly for our customers.”

PBJ Cattle Company practices ethical ranching

Before gold mining and casinos, the rural Teller County economy was rooted in agriculture and ranching, key to the state’s early history and an important economic and cultural driver. Prior to gold fever introducing the mining industry in the 1890s, ranchers were driving livestock across the terrain to get them to market.

In a hat tip to those earlier days, many locals will recall when western cowboys paraded down U.S. Highway 24, Woodland Park’s main thoroughfare.

Over 100 years ago, animal husbandry practices and treatment was considered to be less humane. It must be acknowledged that today’s feed lots and kill plants are where livestock meet the end of a life cycle and, according to PBJ Cattle Company partner Jessica Burton, represents just over one percent of the industry.

“Ninety-eight percent of the ranching industry are people like us,” Burton says of the family owned and operated Double Eagle Ranch in Divide.

Changing times drive changes in practice, and many ranching businesses have adapted; PBJ has innovated to meet today’s consumers’ demand for beef and desire for humane treatment of animals.

The PBJ Cattle Company produces “all-natural high altitude premium grass-fed beef” and “some of the finest beef and yak products in all of Colorado,” according Burton, daughter and business partner with her mother and father.

The 1,000-acre ranch accommodates happy and healthy

herds of beef and yak that are humanely and ethically raised, boasting a “ranch to table” trajectory to the consumer.

Burton says PBJ has adopted Dr. Temple Grandin’s animal welfare practices to ensure their cattle “live comfortable lives from beginning to end.”

Burton believes prioritization of animal welfare improves the quality of meat for consumers.

“We believe that it is our obligation to honor and respect our livestock by handling them in the most humane ways possible. We have done that by incorporating Dr. Grandin’s entire design into the handling facility.

“We create low-stress environments for our cattle from ranch to slaughter. This includes spacious pens with plenty of room for roaming and 100% cattle insensibility to eliminate stress and pain to the animal. We ALWAYS use effective, humane handling practices with our cattle,” Burton said.

“Cattle that experience serious levels of stress and spikes of adrenaline produce tougher meat. By eliminating animal stress, we are also improving the quality of the meat,” Burton says.

For more information about Grandin practices, visit www. grandin.com.

PBJ Cattle Company, offers retail cuts and ground beef and yak including grain or grass finished beef and grass finished yak halves or wholes. Ground meat is from one single animal, not co-mingled, and all premium primal cuts included. They also sell whole and half orders.

PBJ offers year-round market style shopping for ground

The Butte Theater: Shining Star in Cripple Creek

A partnership between the city of Cripple Creek and the nonprofit organization Friends of the Butte has enhanced the performances at the historic Butte Theater.

Built in 1896 the Butte is known for the melodramas, where audiences hiss and boo the villain while cheering the heroine. Under theater manager, Zach Sztanyo, the melodramas continue in June.

The Butte features community play-

ers as well as professional actors in its schedule. In March, the Missoula Children’s Theater performed the play “Rapunzel.” The actors are a traveling theater group based in Missoula, Mont.

An outreach to others, the youthful performers spend a week with students at the Cripple Creek/Victor School, casting the show and rehearsing for the one-day show.

The schedule continues with “The Butler Did it,” a British farce to be directed and acted by community members from The Butte. Performances run from March 29 to April 14.

The community season wraps up with “Cripple Creek’s Got Talent,” where the locals get the opportunity to satisfy their inner actor. The show May 10 is a fundraiser for Friends of the Butte.

The professional season starts the second week in June with a melodrama, followed by a musical in mid-July, a Halloween show in October and a Christmas performance in December.

In a town known for gaming and the rattle of chips, the clanging of machines, the Butte provides cultural relief, an amenity that wins with a variety of shows. Concessions and a full bar are available.

Lynn and George Jones are the owners of Zebz Outfooter in Woodland Park.

Zeb’s helps you gear up for play

There’s a sense of outdoor adventure at Zebz OutFooter in Woodland Park. Specializing in outfitting customers for hiking, running, walking, or strolling, Zebz does business in a log cabin on the city’s main street.

The exercise vibes are in the ambience of the setting, the historic cabin, the shoes, boots, the backpacks, the beanies, each inviting a feeling of energy, evoking a let’s-go-outside sense of play.

“It’s been a crazy and fast first year,” said Lynn Jones, who with her husband George opened the store Dec. 3, 2022.

The Joneses, who also own Colorado Gear Lab, have a marketing shtick which influences how they stock the stores. “We are building our inventory by listening to our customers,” Lynn said “What products do they want us to bring in? A lot of what you see is a direct result of that.”

Zebz Outfooter is noted for hiring local high-school students, another distinguishing point for the business at 102 W. Midland Avenue.

Lowell Thomas Museum a treasure trove

A vibrant piece of history, the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum holds treasures that reveal the story of the famous gold camp of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On two levels, the museum sets the scene for what life was like back in the day. Visitors can even pretend to be miners as they pan for real gold and gems. For the community, to see people panning from a trough on the street is akin to street theater, Victor style. The museum pays tribute to its namesake with displays of the famous journalist, author, and world traveler. A free video features Thomas speaking about his life.

There are rooms decorated in themes that enhance the museum’s historic memorabilia, books, historic maps and postcards, Victorian jewelry, old-time games, puzzles, gold ore, rocks, and minerals.

Throughout the summer, the museum hosts walking tours of Sunnyside Cemetery, along with other specialized programs. For information, check victormuseum.com or call (719) 6895509.

Dinosaur center has achieved national fame

Along with beautiful scenery, spectacular mountains and trees, Woodland Park happens to be the place where world-famous paleontologist Michael Triebold established his laboratory and exhibit space.

Visitors come from all over the world to see remnants of the pre-historic world, evidenced in the skeletons of dinosaurs that have visitors gaping, adults and little kids.

To add to the mystique of the ancient world, Triebold brings the museum into the 21st century with discoveries that tell stories, perhaps ones with no ending.

For instance, in the summer of 2022, museum curator Anthony Maltese discovered the bones of T-Rex in a field in the Hell Creek Formation in South Dakota. The find was the culmination of a 25-year search.

A visit to the resource center incorporates exhibits and drama reflected in watching the paleontologists at work. There is also a Prehistoric Paradise Gift shop to enhance the mood inherent in visiting a prehistoric world.

Goodwill is the place to be in Woodland Park

The Goodwill store in Woodland Park thrives as a resource for people with an eye for a bargain. But bargaining, or getting a smashing deal, is only part of the allure of the second--hand store. But this one fits the new-fangled jargon for clothes, goods, furniture and decorating items. Upcycled merchandise is what Goodwill offers. You name it, they probably have it. To judge from informal conversations with dozens of people from all around Ute Pass, paying for new stuff is well, not cool. A check with fashionable women unveils pride in being dressed at Goodwill, professional wear as well as casual. Fashion boots? Goodwill has them. Scarves? Yes.

Picture frames, too. A well-known artist buys many of his frames at Goodwill while another one decorated her entire home with items from the store. She’s a regular like hundreds of others who often have to park their cars in the street, as the lot fills up fast.

Another advantage is that it’s a place to meet friends, for everybody who knows a deal when they see one shops at Goodwill. It’s a playground for people who get a kick out of sharing their latest finds, perhaps with a little grin to go with story.

110 Reserve is a happening place in Woodland Park

A place to gather with a come-on-in vibe, 110 Reserve became an instant hit as the place to see and be seen.

A bar/restaurant that enhances the downtown scene in

Woodland Park, 110 Reserve is a social gathering place where everybody knows your name. Or if they don’t at first, they soon will.

The success of the establishment is chiefly due to the vision of Pam Mikesell who zeroed on the proverbial ace in the hole, one with a view of Pikes Peak. “We have this amazing courtyard which had never been utilized before,” said Mikesell, who opened the reserve in July 2021.

The bar’s specialty drinks are unique: 110 Especial Margarita, Smoky Old Fashioned, Cucumber Cooler, for instance. Draft beers recognize regional brewers such as Bristol Laughing Lab, Oskar Blues, Eddyline Summer Shandy, Red Leg and Goat Patch.

For the menu, Mikesell relied on the expertise of her friend, Glenda Southard. An experienced chef, Southard created a menu bonanza that includes chicken satay bowl, Caprese Panini, Pita Patty Melt and a pork sandwich with Hatch chilies. Then there’s dessert, cheesecake and chocolate cake, for starters.

If every business needs a gimmick, Mikesell has one in Big

Red, the vintage truck in the courtyard background, a landmark that distinguished the reserve. To top it off, the artist, Lois Sprague, pays tribute to Big Red with a painting inside.

The interior of the main room reflects Mikesell’s eye for design – walls of tin, the painting, guitars – sometimes people just grab one and start playing, and a community table that promotes the camaraderie.

Hutchison has put her touch on the bar, with purple lights and an array of colorful liquor bottles on a mirror background. Wines of Colorado is a restaurant on a creek You can’t miss it. The Wines of Colorado on Ute Pass in Cascade casts a signal that it’s the most popular place within miles, maybe thousands of miles. Evidence is in the constantly packed parking lot.

A venerable institution on the Pass, Wines specializes in Colorado wines and Western ambiance.

Arin and Dawn DeMay bought the bar/restaurant from Francie and Marv Parliament two years ago. The DeMays renovated the place with tables crafted of wine barrels with oak tops.

But the kicker is Fountain Creek that runs alongside the restaurant and elevates outdoor seating to luscious, heavenly, even.

The wines feature vintners such as Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City and others in Salida, Palisade, Denver, and Littleton.

The DeMays kept the popular Buffalo Burger but added items such as Buffalo Lasagna and Chicken Parmesan while featuring Reese’s Peanut Butter Pie and the favorite, Carrot Cake.

Bierwerks Brewery puts city on the beer map

Hot or cold outside, people gather on the patio at Bierwerks Brewery on Woodland Park’s main street. The obvious camaraderie reflect the city as a place where people gather for conversation and good beer.

Brewed right there on the premises, Bierwerks has been attracting a range of customers since opening in 2010. But the beer! Take the Helles, Munich syle blonde lager, or the IPA’s Crank Yanker or Grapefruit Mango, or maybe the Delirium Tremens, they’re all popular choices.

The food, too, complements the beer, with Colorado Sausage, Wisconsin cheese, warm pretzels and salami/ cheese platters, In addition to the patio, Bierwerks recently added an upstairs deck.
