The natural organic characteristics of timber often combined with very strong geometrical elements give my work its unmistakable style. I create furniture that is beyond the realms of the imagination, is tactile and totally unique, whilst retaining all the qualities of extreme comfort and practicality. Visitors to the studio will see a selection of various timbers in their raw and finished states, a portfolio of recently completed commissions, and a variety of finished works for sale.
My work is concerned with how our reading of paintings is dependent on prior expectation of what an art subject is. I am drawn to objects or places that have pattern or beauty as a result of functional design, as opposed to any deliberate aesthetic choice. My recent work has incorporated multiple viewpoints and compositions based on chance. Having been in Wasps studios for over a year now has allowed me to be more ambitious in both the scale and scope of my work.
directions: From the A75 take the A711 into Kirkcudbright. From St Mary Street, take a right turn onto High Street and the WASPS Studios are on your right. recommendations: Masterpiece sandwich bar (24 Castle Street, Kirkcudbright, DG6 4JD 01557 331131) offers a good selection of filled rolls, baguettes and salads, accompanied by an excellent choice of background music. A lovely woodland walk is accessible just a short distance from the studios. From High Street, head east up the hill past the Health Centre and the caravan park this takes you to Barrhill Wood, with beautiful views over Kirkcudbright and the estuary.

Broughton House (12 High Street Kirkcudbright DG6 4JX 0844 493 2246 www.nts.org.uk/Property/Broughton-HouseGarden/) is a great chance to see the work and studio space of ‘Glasgow Boy’, E.A Hornel.
