SPORTS COMMISSION ON THE ROAD

Colorado Springs

The biggest trip of the year took place October 30-November 1, 2025, when the Springfield Sports Commission team traveled to Colorado Springs to meet directly with United States Olympic and National Governing Bodies. The first day featured one-on-one meetings with several organizers, strengthening relationships and discussing future event opportunities. The highlight of the trip came on November 1, when the SSC team hosted 15 USOC rights holders for a unique early-morning tailgate before taking the group into Falcon Stadium to experience the battle for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy between Army and Air Force. This one-of-a-kind activation was extremely well received, offering a memorable experience that set Springfield apart by doing something no one had done before.

St. Louis

Lance Kettering and Stan Adams made a quick but successful trip to St. Louis on August 19, 2025, meeting with Game 7 Baseball and the Missouri Youth Soccer Association (MYSA). As a result of those meetings, the team secured three brand-new events with Game 7 Baseball at the newly renovated Killian and Cooper Complex. Discussions with MYSA also positioned Springfield as a strong contender to host a major USA Soccer event at the renovated Lake Country Soccer Complex.

Kansas City

Directly following the St. Louis trip, Lance Kettering and Stan Adams traveled to Kansas City on August 21, 2025, to meet with three event organizers. The day began with discussions with the NAIA regarding ideal championship bid opportunities, followed by meetings with USSSA Baseball and Top Gun Softball to explore hosting new events at the

renovated Killian and Cooper Complex. As a result of these meetings, six new events were successfully booked at Killian and Cooper.

Columbia & Jefferson City

On Tuesday, January 27, 2026 the team traveled to Columbia to meet with the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA), hosting a lunch and a round of Springfield trivia to reconnect with longtime partners and meet new staff members.

On the return trip to Springfield, the team stopped in Jefferson City to meet with Special Olympics Missouri, where they recapped the State Outdoor Games and discussed future event opportunities and continued collaboration.

The Springfield Sports Commission remains on the road year-round promoting Springfield as a premier destination for sports events. Through national trade shows, sales missions, and educational conferences, the team builds relationships with event rights holders, showcases local facilities, and strengthens Springfield’s position in a competitive sports tourism marketplace.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

LAKE COUNTRY SOCCER FACILITY SPOTLIGHT

The highly anticipated Lake Country Soccer Complex renovation was completed in March 2025, elevating the venue to one of the premier soccer facilities in the Midwest. Formerly home to 17 grass fields, a 1,000-seat stadium, and two indoor fields, the complex now features eight fully turfed, lighted fields alongside nine grass fields—dramatically expanding its event-hosting potential. These state-ofthe-art turf fields eliminate weather limitations, allowing Lake Country to once again attract major soccer and multi-sport tournaments.

The impact was immediate, with three major events hosted in 2025 generating an estimated $3.95 million in economic impact. The Ozark Coca-Cola/Dr Pepper Cup officially opened the facility April 5–6, welcoming more than 1,100 soccer players. That momentum continued with the Springfield Fall Classic on October 11–12, which drew over 1,750 players to compete on the new fields. The year concluded with the Special Olympics Missouri State Outdoor Games on October 17–19, showcasing the complex’s multi-sport versatility by hosting a 32-court bocce tournament on October 18 and a four-field flag football tournament on October 19, with a combined total of 900 competitors. With this early momentum, the sky is the limit for the Lake Country Soccer Complex in 2026 and beyond.

NEW SOCCER EVENT FOR NEWLY TURFED FIELDS

Springfield will host the Central Midwest Subregional Center and College ID Camp on June 27–28, 2026, welcoming top boys and girls soccer players U9–U18 from across the Central Midwest Rush subregion. Athletes from Rush clubs throughout the region will come together to train, compete, and showcase their skills while being evaluated for future Junior Rush Select teams, Rush Select Academy opportunities, professional trials, and college recruiting exposure.

The event fulfills a vision first announced in April 2020, when the Springfield Sports Commission and Southwest Missouri Rush committed to bringing a national Rush event to Springfield. That goal will come to fruition in 2026.

The Sports Commission anticipates participation from approximately 400 visiting families and 200 local athletes, with an estimated $392,000 in direct economic impact. Hosting the camp is made possible by the region’s newly turfed soccer fields, which provide the capacity and quality required to support a high-level national development event and further position Springfield as a premier destination for elite youth soccer.

“We are excited to host the first ever Rush Soccer Midwest Select ID Camp, bringing in over 600 players from Rush Soccer clubs throughout the Midwest. Rush Soccer is the largest Youth Soccer organization in the world and we can’t wait to show them the Springfield hospitality.”

USA ARCHERY AND SPORTS

COMMISSION TAKE OVER HAMMONS FIELD

Baseball and archery are rarely mentioned in the same sentence—but that changed on August 15. In a creative effort to add value to the 141st USA Archery Target Nationals & U.S. Open, the Springfield Sports Commission partnered with the Springfield Cardinals to host a USA Archery Takeover Night during the Cardinals’ game against the Wichita Wind Surge. The entire evening was themed around archery, highlighted by the Cardinals wearing special archery-

commemorate the occasion. The night opened with 2024 Paralympic gold medalist Jason Tabansky throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. Fans also enjoyed a special meet-and-greet with USA Archery Olympians Casey Kaufhold, Jennifer MucinoFernandez, and Catalina Gnoriega. In the sixth inning, Tabansky was interviewed live on the Springfield Cardinals Radio Network, sharing his Paralympic journey and helping promote the sport of archery to a broader audience.

“Archery is a sport that doesn’t always receive widespread public attention, and for the Springfield Sports Commission to have the entire community recognize our organization and athletes in such a first-class way was truly amazing to see,” said Richard Flemming, Senior Director of Communications and Marketing for USA Archery. “The bar has been set extremely high for any future destination looking to top what was done this year.”

“Archery is a sport that doesn’t always receive widespread public attention, and for the Springfield Sports Commission to have the entire community recognize our organization and athletes in such a firstclass way was truly amazing to see.”

USA Archery

Ultimately, the goal was to show USA Archery that when an event of this magnitude comes to Springfield, it becomes the number-one focus of the community.

“That commitment is what gives us a competitive advantage over similarly sized destinations,” said Stan Adams, Director of Sports Business Development for the Springfield Sports Commission. “Providing athletes with once-in-a-lifetime experiences and focusing on the small details is what keeps them coming back year after year.” This one-of-a-kind activation delivered a memorable experience for athletes and fans alike while showcasing Springfield’s innovative approach to event hosting, which ultimately led to a 2nd year contract for the event.

ARCHERY CALLS SPRINGFIELD HOME FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2025 & 2026

Nearly 400 elite archers from across the United States and around the world competed for 30 national championships at the USA Archery Target Nationals & U.S. Open, held August 13–16 at Betty and Bobby Allison Sports Town. Sanctioned by World Archery, the event attracted competitors of all ages, including international athletes representing Taiwan, Italy, and Canada.

“This was the highest-rated event we’ve ever had. The indoor facility, allowing athletes to cool off during the competition, really put the event over the top.”
Amanda Mangum

The championship is one of the most prestigious events on the archery calendar, offering athletes the pportunity to set world records while earning U.S. Archery Team eligibility and valuable national ranking points. The event’s stature was matched by its economic impact, generating an estimated $958,000 in direct spending during the week-long competition and further reinforcing Springfield’s reputation as a host for elite, internationally recognized sporting events.

“Springfield was a fantastic host for this event. The entire community made us feel like we were the most important thing in town,” said Amanda Mangum, Director of Events for USA Archery. “The Springfield Cardinals wearing archery-themed jerseys was the most unique activation anyone has done for us in our history.” Mangum added that athlete feedback highlighted the overall experience, noting, “This was the highest-rated event we’ve ever had. The indoor facility, allowing athletes to cool off during the competition, really put the event over the top.”

Following the success of the event, USA Archery committed to returning to Springfield and expanding its footprint. The organization has signed on for a second year and will add a third event to its Springfield lineup.

“We truly enjoyed hosting such a first-class national event at Allison Sports Town and are extremely excited to sign an extension and grow the event even further,” said Stan Adams, Director of Sports Business Development for the Springfield Sports Commission.

The 142nd USA Archery Target Nationals & U.S. Open will return to Springfield August 12–15, 2026.

NATIONAL CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOL BASKETBALL COMMIT

TO STAY IN SPRINGFIELD UNDER NEW FIVE YEAR AGREEMENT

Springfield will continue to serve as the home of the National Christian HomeSchool Basketball Championships (NCHBC) through 2030 following a new five-year agreement with the Springfield Sports Commission and Visit Springfield. The extension secures one of the city’s most impactful national sporting events and reinforces Springfield’s reputation as a trusted host for large-scale championships.

Since first coming to Springfield in 2009, the NCHBC has grown into the world’s largest homeschool sporting event and a cornerstone of the community’s annual sports calendar. Each March, the championship welcomes more than 400 teams and approximately 3,500 athletes and coaches for a week of competition featuring more than

1,000 games. The event activates more than 20 venues across the region, including college campuses, high schools, private facilities, and park board gyms, creating a collaborative footprint few destinations can replicate.

“Since 1992, NCHBC has been the world’s largest homeschool sporting event, and Springfield has been the heart of our tremendous growth. With a record-shattering 408 teams in 2025, it’s clear that the city provides the perfect foundation for our event.”

The NCHBC also delivers substantial economic impact to the Springfield area. The event generates an estimated $6 million in direct economic impact annually and produces more than 6,000 hotel room nights each year, supporting local hotels, restaurants, retail, and attractions. Over the life of the new agreement, the projected economic impact is expected to exceed $30 million through 2030.

“Springfield has proudly welcomed the National Christian HomeSchool Basketball Championships since 2009, and we are thrilled to continue that tradition,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “This event reflects the strength of our facilities, our community partnerships, and our commitment to delivering an exceptional experience for participants and families.”

NCHBC leadership cited Springfield’s longstanding support, venue availability, and community collaboration as key factors in extending the agreement.

NCHBC IN SPRINGFIELD

The 2026 National Christian HomeSchool Basketball Championships will again bring thousands of athletes, families, and fans to the Greater Springfield area March 16-20, continuing one of the city’s most significant and recognizable annual sporting events.

AAU REGION 16 TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

DELIVER MAJOR IMPACT

Springfield proudly hosted the AAU Region 16 Track & Field Championships June 25–29, 2025, welcoming 2,160 athletes to Parkview High School and JFK Stadium for four days of high-level youth competition. As a key qualifying event for national competition, the championships brought together elite track and field athletes from across the region, along with families, coaches, and spectators, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere throughout the week.

The event generated an estimated $2,353,190 in direct economic impact for the Springfield community. Hotels, restaurants, retail, and local attractions all benefited from the influx of visitors, while the competition itself showcased Springfield’s ability to successfully host complex, multi-day championships.

Despite periods of challenging weather, the event ran smoothly thanks to the dedication and professionalism of countless partners and volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure athlete safety and a positive experience for all involved.

“This event was a true example of what makes Springfield special,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “We are incredibly grateful to Parkview High School and Springfield Public Schools for their commitment and flexibility, especially when weather challenges arose. I want to specifically thank the staff at SPS Central Administration, Athletics Director Josh Scott, Assistant Athletics Director Jason Michel, and Jay Miller, Parkview High School’s track coach and primary event contact, for their tireless efforts and leadership throughout the week. Their dedication made this championship possible.”

In addition to its regional and economic impact, the championships proved to be a strong fundraising opportunity for Parkview High School. Through concessions operated during the event, nearly $12,000 in net profits were generated in support of Parkview athletics and programs, highlighting how major sporting events can directly benefit host schools and local organizations.

The successful hosting of the AAU Region 16 Track & Field Championships further cements Springfield’s position as a trusted host for high-profile youth and amateur sporting events, driven by strong facilities, committed partners, and a community that rallies together—even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

“We are grateful for the city of Springfield, Sports Commission, Springfield Public Schools and Missouri State University for hosting and rolling out the red carpet this year.”

Region 16 President

SPRINGFIELD DELIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP STAGE FOR MISSOURI USA WRESTLING

Springfield once again demonstrated its capacity to host premier sporting events by welcoming the Missouri USA Wrestling Championships to Wilson Logistics Arena across three weekends during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The championships were delivered through a collaborative partnership between the Springfield Sports Commission, Visit Springfield, and Wilson Logistics Arena.

More than 3,500 youth wrestlers—boys and girls representing communities from every corner of Missouri—traveled to Springfield to compete in the championship series. The steady influx of athletes, families, coaches, officials, and fans generated more than $2 million in direct economic impact for the greater Springfield area. Local hotels, restaurants, and small businesses benefited from the multi-weekend footprint, reinforcing Springfield’s reputation as a reliable and welcoming championship host city.

Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission, emphasized the importance of leadership and facility investment in attracting and retaining events of this scale.

“Events of this caliber are made possible by strong facilities and dedicated professionals,” said Kettering. “Aaron Owen, Casey Owen, and Olivia Grellner at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds have played a critical role in elevating Wilson Logistics Arena. Their vision and commitment continue to open doors for championship-level events while creating meaningful, long-term benefits for our community.”

Missouri USA Wrestling State Chair Pat Ream highlighted the organization’s mission and its focus on providing broad, inclusive opportunities across the state.

“Missouri USA Wrestling is committed to delivering safe, high-quality wrestling opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers,” Ream said. “By offering competition across multiple disciplines— Folkstyle, Freestyle, GrecoRoman, and Beach Wrestling— we continue to grow the sport and develop excellence at every level.”

The 13th Annual Sports Commission Awards, held in partnership with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and presented by title sponsor Elliott Lodging, took place at the Gillioz Theatre on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The event recognized over 250 outstanding high school athletes. Highlights of the evening included a blue carpet arrival, photo booth and selfie station, refreshments, and a printed event program. Customized videos showcased each sport and nominee, with all nominees welcomed to the stage and award winners announced live.

MULTIPLE COMPLEX COLLABORATION FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The Springfield Sports Commission officially kicked off its threeyear partnership with Special Olympics Missouri by hosting the SOMO State Outdoor Games October 17–19, beginning with the lighting of the Olympic Torch during the Opening Ceremony at Cooper Tennis Stadium. The event welcomed more than 900 athletes competing in flag football, bocce, softball, tennis, and golf, and generated an estimated $1.9 million in economic impact. Competitions utilized multiple venues across the community, including Greene County Parks facilities, Lake Country Soccer Complex, and Evangel University.

“This is by far the most personally fulfilling event I have ever been a part of,” said Stan Adams, Director of Sports Business Development for the Springfield Sports

that the Cooper Corridor should be seen as one major sports complex rather than four separate facilities.”

Three of the five sports were contested within the Cooper/Killian/Lake Country complex in 2025, with four of the five scheduled to be hosted there next year—highlighting the area’s ability to support large-scale, multi-facility events.

After being hosted for many years in Jefferson City, Special Olympics Missouri evaluated opportunities to enhance the State Outdoor Games experience for athletes, coaches, and families. As part of that process, Springfield emerged as a strong host option based on several logistical advantages.

“Many factors led us to select Springfield, but one of the most important was the proximity of venues,” said Craig Hall, Director of Competition and Outreach for Special

Building on a successful first year, the SOMO State Outdoor Games will return to Springfield October 16–18, with an expected increase in athlete participation and continued economic impact for the community.

NXTPRO Hoops, based in Lincoln, Nebraska, first brought its PRO 16 series to Springfield in 2024 and followed up in 2025 with a Middle School age event.

Looking ahead, the partnership will grow further in 2026 with two NXTPRO Hoops events scheduled in Springfield, set for April 10–12 and July 3–5. Both tournaments will utilize the Strafford Sports Complex and Field House Sports Center. Each event is projected to host 50–60 teams, with an estimated $780,000 in economic impact per weekend.

“We are proud to continually build our event relationship with NXTPRO Hoops,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission.

MINI GOLF

The Springfield Sports Commission Mini Golf Championship reached new highs in 2025, marking the most successful year in the event’s history. Hosted at Getaway Golf, the sixth annual fundraiser welcomed 260 participants and was supported by a record 45 event sponsors, highlighting strong community engagement and growing support for the Sports Commission’s mission.

The event generated nearly $15,000 in net proceeds, with funds directly supporting efforts to attract and host sporting events that drive economic impact and community benefit across the Springfield area. Participants enjoyed an afternoon of friendly competition while supporting sports tourism initiatives.

Competition was strong across both courses. Springfield Public Schools captured the International Course Team Championship with a team score of 172, while Josh Scott earned International Course Individual Champion honors with a score of 40. On the USA Course, 4M Building Solutions claimed the Team Championship with a score of 166, and Austin Propst secured Individual Champion honors with a score of 41.

The Springfield Sports Commission set an ambitious goal to become the Midwest’s premier rugby hub, and in 2025 that vision became reality.

GAINING POPULARITY IN THE SPRINGFIELD AREA

RUGBY

After never hosting a rugby event prior to 2025, Springfield welcomed three major rugby events at Betty and Bobby Allison Sports Town, partnering with two national governing organizations and establishing the city as an emerging destination for the sport.

Across the three events, 32 club and collegiate teams traveled to Springfield, generating an estimated $1.1 million in direct economic impact for the community.

“When we set the goal of becoming the Midwest’s rugby hub, I’d be lying if I said I expected to land this many events in such a short period of time,” said Stan Adams, Director of Sports Business Development for the Springfield Sports Commission. “We’re excited to carry this momentum into 2026 and beyond.”

The rugby season kicked off May 3–5 with the USA Club Northern Super Regional, which featured top men’s and women’s club teams from Divisions I, II, and III representing the Midwest, Rocky Mountain, and Mid-America Rugby Unions. Fourteen teams competed over the three-day tournament, producing an estimated $678,000 in economic impact. Sean Cox, President of the Mid-America Rugby Union, praised the venue, calling it one of the best facilities he has hosted or played at in the Midwest and expressing confidence that Springfield will host additional rugby events in the coming years.

Momentum continued in November as Allison Sports Town hosted the National Collegiate Rugby Western Regionals. From November 14–16, twelve women’s teams across three divisions competed for six national championship berths. The following weekend, November 21–23, six men’s teams competed, with two advancing to Nationals.

“Springfield could not have been a better host,” said Kelsea Thompson, Events and Eligibility Manager for National Collegiate Rugby.

“The facility was first class, and the proximity to downtown was a huge hit. We’re extremely excited about bringing these events back in the future.”

A SPRINGFIELD STAPLE

THE BASS PRO TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

The Bass Pro Tournament of Champions remains one of Springfield’s signature sporting events. Established in 1985, the tournament is widely recognized as America’s highest-attended high school basketball tournament, and the 41st edition once again delivered on that reputation. The event is hosted and directed by the Springfield Public School District.

Held January 15–17 at Great Southern Bank Arena, the event drew more than 24,000 fans over three days and generated an estimated $670,685 in economic impact for the Springfield area.

The tournament continues to showcase the strength of Springfield’s partnerships. The Springfield Sports Commission proudly served as sponsor of the press backdrop and media room for the tournament.

“The Sports Commission is excited to once again support the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, one of the most celebrated high school basketball events in the country,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director. “Supporting an event of this caliber is a privilege as it brings elite competition to Springfield and highlights our community on a national stage.”

The Sports Commission also continued its partnership with SMC Packaging Group, which elevated its fan-facing display for a third consecutive year. SMC’s creative team introduced a three-dimensional locker-room-style installation featuring

custom jerseys and school colors, drawing strong engagement from fans and media alike.

Tournament Director Josh Scott praised the event’s national profile, noting that the 41st TOC featured five of the top eight teams in the country, with many athletes expected to compete at the NCAA and professional levels.

The eight-team field included local teams Kickapoo and Logan-Rogersville, along with Principia (MO), Wheeler (GA), Bartlett (TN), Paul VI (VA), St. John Bosco (CA), and Calvary Christian (FL). The championship game saw Calvary Christian defeat Paul VI, 78–64, with Cayden Daughtry earning TOC MVP honors.

ROLLER HOCKEY

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

COMING TO SPRINGFIELD

Springfield is proud to host the National Collegiate Roller Hockey National Championships April 15–19 at Brightspeed Ice Park. The event is expected to bring 50–55 collegiate teams to the community following a competitive national bid process and generate an anticipated $1.1 million in direct economic spending.

To accommodate the championships, both ice sheets at Brightspeed Ice Park will be melted down and converted into full roller hockey rinks, highlighting the venue’s flexibility as a Springfield-Greene County Park Board facility capable of hosting national and regional events.

“We are thrilled to bring this event to Springfield,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “After more than 10 years of pursuit, the timing finally aligned, and we’re excited to host a new national championship event in our community.”

USA BMX BACK AT WILSON LOGISTICS ARENA

For the third consecutive year, Springfield will welcome riders, families, and fans from across the country as it hosts the USA BMX Show Me State Nationals at Wilson Logistics Arena on February 13–15, 2026. The premier indoor BMX event continues to showcase Springfield’s strength as a destination for national-level competitions.

In partnership with the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds team, the Springfield Sports Commission will once again support one of USA BMX’s most anticipated indoor events. The most recent Show Me State Nationals attracted 857 riders from 39 states and three countries, generating an estimated $1.1 million in direct economic impact and approximately 2,399 hotel room nights for the local hospitality community.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to host an event of this caliber at Wilson Logistics Arena,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “Springfield has become a favorite destination for indoor BMX, and we’re proud to welcome the BMX community back.”

FROM MINI GOLF TO GYMNASTICS: BUILDING EVENTS THROUGH

The Springfield region will host the Missouri USA Gymnastics Advanced State Meet for Xcel Silver & Gold on March 27–29, 2026 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds West Hall. The event is hosted by Ozark Mountain Gymnastics in collaboration with the Springfield Sports Commission and is expected to bring between 800 and 1,000 gymnasts from across Missouri.

“For many years, I’ve enjoyed participating in and supporting the outstanding events organized by the Springfield Sports Commission,” said Jeremy Brokate, owner of Ozark Mountain Gymnastics. “They have consistently delivered exceptional experiences for athletes and our community. When we became owners of Ozark Mountain Gymnastics, this long standing partnership naturally led us to collaborate on the upcoming gymnastics event, and we are deeply grateful for the Commission’s continued support and dedication to making it a success.”

“The Springfield Sports Commission has consistently delivered exceptional experiences for athletes and our community.”

The championship will showcase the flexibility of the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, with West Hall converted into a gymnastics competition venue that demonstrates the facility’s ability to support a wide range of sports and event formats. The Sports Commission will enhance the overall event experience by providing a custom photo backdrop, giving athletes and families a designated space to capture memories from the weekend.

The partnership behind the event reflects relationships built through Springfield’s broader sports tourism efforts. Longtime Sports Commission supporters Jeremy and Cheyne Brokate of Brokate Janitorial have been involved in past Sports Commission events, including the Mini Golf and BigShots Golf Challenge. As their involvement in the gymnastics community grew, it created an opportunity to collaborate in a new way.

“This event is a great example of how relationships matter in sports tourism,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “When partners like Ozark Mountain Gymnastics and the Brokates come together, it allows us to support local organizers while continuing to showcase Springfield as a great location for gymnastics!”

SPRINGFIELD

The Springfield Futsal Shootout returned to the Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town in January 2026, once again turning the indoor facility into a high-energy home for futsal across two championship weekends. Hosted by Lake Country Soccer and SWMO Rush, and presented by the Springfield Sports Commission, the event continued to build momentum as a signature winter tournament for the region.

The tournament featured competition across multiple age divisions, with U7–U13 teams competing during the first weekend and U14–U20 teams taking the courts the following weekend. In total, 150 teams participated in the 2026 Springfield Futsal Shootout, welcoming clubs from communities across Missouri and surrounding states. With a strong percentage of teams traveling from outside the Springfield area, the event generated an estimated $900,000 in direct economic impact, supporting local hotels, restaurants, and businesses throughout the region.

Beyond the numbers, the Springfield Futsal Shootout highlighted Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town as a premier indoor facility with the flexibility to host a wide variety of sports and event formats. The venue’s adaptable layout, modern amenities, and spectatorfriendly design allow it to support everything from youth and amateur competitions to large-scale championship events.

“The Springfield Futsal Shootout shows what’s possible when local clubs, facilities, and partners work together,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “It’s not just about the matches on the field—it’s about creating an experience that supports our community and strengthens Springfield’s reputation as a trusted host city.”

With another successful year complete, the Springfield Futsal Shootout continues to play an important role in the region’s futsal calendar while reinforcing the value of collaboration in sports tourism. The 2027 event will be held January 8-10 and January 15-17 at Sports Town.

The Springfield Sports Commission continues to elevate Springfield’s standing as a premier sports destination through intentional planning and strategic collaboration. Following the success of its 2019 Sports Tourism Strategic Plan, the Sports Commission again partnered with the Huddle Up Group (HUG) to complete an updated Strategic Plan in 2025, designed to reassess, evaluate, and reboot priorities for the next phase of growth.

The original 2019 study proved transformational for Springfield. Its recommendations helped drive major facility investments, including turf upgrades at Lake Country Soccer Complex, Killian Softball Complex, and Cooper Baseball Complex, as well as the development of Wilson Logistics Arena. Collectively, these projects expanded Springfield’s capacity to host high-profile regional and national sporting events and strengthened its competitive position in the sports tourism marketplace.

The 2025 Strategic Plan was presented to the Sports Commission Board of Directors on November 17 and shared with community stakeholders and constituent groups on November 18. Jon Schmieder, CEO of the Huddle Up Group, traveled to Springfield to lead the forum and facilitate discussions.

Key takeaways from the study reinforced the importance of developing an anchor indoor sports facility, advancing the branding of the Cooper/Killian Sports Corridor, and enhancing overall Springfield Sports Commission branding. Additional recommendations included deeper board engagement through a program to better market the organization and tell its story to community partners.

“This third-party assessment confirmed our growth as a top-tier sports commission,” said Executive Director Lance Kettering. “It also provided valuable insight into where we can improve and highlighted the community assets—like an anchor indoor facility— that will be essential to Springfield’s continued success.”

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

with DALE REPLOGLE

Q: Are you originally from Springfield? If not, what brought you here?

A: I grew up in Marshfield, Missouri. After graduating high school, I moved to Springfield to attend Drury University. Following college, I married my wife, Melanie, and we decided to stay in Springfield to build our careers and raise our family.

Q: Why did you decide to join the Springfield Sports Commission?

A: Elliott Lodging holds a board seat on the Springfield Sports Commission, and the previous member reached their term limit. I was asked to step in and fill the open seat.

Q: What role does Elliott Lodging play in driving tourism and local business in Springfield? How does this align with the Sports Commission’s goals?

A: Elliott Lodging owns and operates 13 hotels in Springfield. We have always been strong supporters of local tourism organizations because we see the direct value they bring in driving tourism and group business to the community. This partnership closely aligns with the Sports Commission’s goals and plays an important role in helping our hotels – and Springfield as a whole – remain successful.

Q: When you are not working, how do you like to spend your free time?

A: I enjoy traveling with my wife and children, as well as hunting and fishing.

Q: What has been the most rewarding moment or accomplishment of your career so far?

A: That’s a tough question. Spending over 25 years with the company and earning the trust of ownership –culminating in my promotion to CEO a few years ago – would be at the top of the list. I’m also proud of my work in securing state funding to support several local projects that would not have been possible without those resources.

Q: What are your favorite sports now compared to your favorite sports growing up?

A: Not much has changed since I was a kid. Growing up, my favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals, and I watched or listened to most games during the baseball season. I’m still a huge fan today. I’ve also always supported the Kansas City Chiefs, and over the past decade, watching Chiefs games with friends has become a weekly tradition. In addition, I enjoy watching and supporting Missouri State Baseball and Baylor University Basketball, as my son attends school there.

TINAUGURAL GREAT 8 CONFERENCE & MARKETPLACE HELD IN SPRINGFIELD

he Springfield Sports Commission is proud to be a member of the Great 8 Destination Alliance, a collaborative group of forwardthinking, non-competing sports destinations committed to sharing best practices and strengthening the national sports tourism industry. Springfield joins an accomplished group of peer communities including Colorado Springs, Colorado; the Treasure Coast, Florida; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Lake Tahoe, Nevada; Erie, Pennsylvania; Plano, Texas; and Fox Cities, Wisconsin.

Participation in the Great 8 Alliance reflects Springfield’s commitment to collaboration over competition. By working alongside destinations with shared values and complementary strengths, the Sports Commission continues to refine strategies, expand relationships with rights holders, and elevate the overall event-hosting experience for athletes and organizers.

That commitment was on full display when Springfield was selected to host the inaugural Great 8 Conference in May 2025. The three-day conference opened May 27, welcoming alliance members and more than 30 sports event rights holders for focused discussions on collaboration, efficient use of resources, and building long-term partnerships in an increasingly competitive sports tourism landscape.

The conference also provided an opportunity to showcase Springfield’s destination assets. Attendees experienced a welcome reception at Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, private multi-venue facility tours, one-on-one appointments with rights holders, and a private suite experience at a Springfield Cardinals game.

“We believe this alliance creates meaningful opportunities for collaboration and shared growth,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “It allows destinations to exchange ideas, strengthen relationships, and elevate their collective efforts to attract future events.”

Following the conference, alliance leadership praised Springfield’s hosting efforts, noting the city set a strong standard for future Great 8 conferences. The alliance will reconvene March 31–April 2, 2026, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

SHOW ME MISSOURI SPORTS: ONE STATE. ONE TEAM. ONE MESSAGE.

The Sports Commission is an active participant in Show Me Missouri Sports, a statewide partnership built on collaboration, shared success, and a unified vision of positioning Missouri as one of the nation’s leading sports tourism destinations.

Show Me Missouri Sports brings together destinations from across the state, including Branson, Cape Girardeau, Chesterfield, Columbia, Explore St. Louis, Joplin, Kansas City, Maryland Heights, Saint Charles, Springfield Sports Commission, St. Joseph, and the St. Louis Sports Commission. Together, these partners work collectively in an increasingly competitive sports tourism marketplace.

The group partners together and attends two major conferences and trade shows each year, presenting a consistent, statewide message to event rights holders that highlights the depth, diversity, and flexibility of Missouri’s sports venues and communities. Members also openly share meeting notes, industry insights, and event leads, creating a strong flow of information that helps identify opportunities faster and match them to the right destination.

While each destination actively promotes its own assets, collaboration always comes first. If an event isn’t the right fit for one community—due to venue needs, facility requirements, or timing—the shared goal is simple: keep the event in Missouri. By working together to connect rights holders with the best-fit destination, the group helps retain economic impact statewide and strengthens long-term relationships.

Advocacy is also central to the group’s mission, including recent support for the Missouri Amateur Sports Tax Credit program passed during the June 2025 special legislative session.

“Working with Show Me Missouri Sports is most rewarding as it allows Springfield to work to not only bring events to Springfield but also collaborate for other communities in Missouri,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission.

“Working with Show Me Missouri Sports is most rewarding as it allows Springfield to work to not only bring events to Springfield but also collaborate for other communities in Missouri.”

Phase two of the $25 million renovation project at the Cooper Park Sports Complex is coming to a close. Killian Softball Complex’s renovation was completed in January 2026 with Cooper Park Youth Baseball Complex being fully completed in Spring 2026. The improvements to the two diamond complexes included upgrading the diamonds with synthetic turf and repaving all of the concrete parking lots and walkways. Killian Softball Complex saw the upgrade to turf on all five diamonds as well as the stadium field as well. While Cooper Park Sports Complex experienced the upgrade to turf diamonds on all five of their fields. This resulted in eleven total diamonds being upgraded to synthetic turf!

“The installation of turf at Killian and Cooper Sports Complex means we have safer, more consistent playing surfaces for our athletes of all levels year-round with fewer rainouts and schedule changes”, said Jill Simmons, Assistant Director of Recreation for the SpringfieldGreene County Park Board. “We will save significantly on watering, mowing, fertilizing, and constant repairs – freeing

up budget dollars and staff time for other community needs while maintaining excellent field conditions. Additionally, high quality sports facilities allow us to host regional and national level tournaments that bring visiting families to town, supporting local businesses, and generating pride in our community.”

“The importance of this project will be felt by the entire Springfield community for a long time to come”, added Stan Adams, Director of Sports Business Development for the Springfield Sports Commission. “The renovation of these diamond complexes will allow us to bring in even larger baseball and softball tournaments to Springfield and help us create a lasting impact in the Springfield sports community.”

SPORTS

The Springfield Sports Commission has secured a robust slate of Top Gun Events, Game 7 Baseball, and USSSA Baseball tournaments for 2026, reinforcing Springfield’s momentum as a premier destination for diamond sports following recent facility upgrades.

For the 2026 calendar year, Springfield has already booked three Top Gun Events, three Game 7 Baseball tournaments, and six USSSA Baseball events. Together, these tournaments are projected to generate more than $6 million in direct economic impact, while maximizing

use of the newly renovated, all-turf fields at Killian and Cooper Sports Complexes.

“Springfield has a large base of competitive baseball and softball teams, and now we have facilities that match that level of play,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission. “The completion of the Killian and Cooper renovations allowed us to swing for the fences and land multiple diamond events for 2026.”
