The biting wind of the Canadian Rockies whipped around my face, stinging my cheeks a familiar redness as I stood shivering beside a roaring bonfire. The crackle of the flames was the only sound louder than the rhythmic drumming of a thousand excited heartbeats. I was at a music festival, an event I usually avoid like the plague. Crowds, noise, overpriced everything it’s all a recipe for my particular brand of misery.Yet here I was, dragged by my relentlessly optimistic friend, Sarah, who swore this festival was different, that it would “change my perspective.” I remained skeptical, my arms crossed tight against the cold. Sarah, oblivious to my inner turmoil, was already halfway through a particularly vigorous jig, fueled by the potent combination of live music and questionable beverages. As the headliner took the stage, a collective cheer erupted, and I felt a strange pull, something I couldn’t quite name, drawing me towards the energy of the crowd. The music began, a raw, powerful anthem, and something shifted inside me. I, surprisingly, found myself tapping my foot, then swaying, then… well, almost enjoying it. But the real game changer was when I looked down. I was wearing a t shirt, a new one I had impulsively bought at the festival’s merch booth. I was not expecting much, I hate most mass produced t shirts. I felt a connection, a sense of defiance, even a little pride.

The next morning, a different part of Canada altogether, but in the exact same situation. I had a similarly great experience at a lakeside cabin.Abunch of us had rented a gorgeous cabin for the long weekend. The pristine lake shimmered in the sunlight, and the air smelled of pine and fresh water. I’d brought my camera, intending to capture the perfect postcard views, and fully anticipating finding every little thing to complain about. I’m a perfectionist, you see. Everything must be just so. Even a slightly crooked photo frame can send me into a spiral. But as I sat on the deck, sipping coffee and watching the early morning mist rise from the lake, I felt something I hadn’t expected: contentment. And I felt particularly comfortable and relaxed. After the sunrise, the lake came alive with activity, and I, armed with my camera, ventured out for some pictures. But as the day wore on, I found myself wanting to be a part of the action, not just an observer. The people were laughing and splashing around in the water. I’m not one for that sort of thing, but for the first time in a long time, I just let it go and had fun with them. I really think my amazing t shirt was the catalyst.
