Let me tell you about a time I almost lost it, completely and utterly lost it, over a spreadsheet. I was at a client meeting, the kind where everyone’s wearing stiff suits and the air conditioning is set to a frigid seventy degrees.Across the mahogany table, the lead consultant, a man who always seemed to smell faintly of ambition and desperation, was grilling me about key performance indicators. KPIs.The bane of my existence, I tell you. I understand their purpose, I really do, but the relentless pressure to optimize, to track, to analyze every single tiny data point until your brain feels like scrambled eggs is enough to drive anyone batty. The consultant, whose name I’ve mercifully erased from my memory, started in on the latest quarterly report. The numbers weren’t where he wanted them. My team, which I lead, had somehow failed to meet some arbitrary goal that he, of course, had dreamt up himself. He began a rapid fire series of questions each designed to make me look like I was failing to perform. My internal pressure gauge was starting to ping. My patience, usually a steel cable, was fraying dangerously close to the breaking point. I swear, I could feel my blood pressure spiking. The meeting was dragging on, and my vision was starting to narrow. I could hear my own heartbeat in my ears. Just as I was about to launch into a detailed explanation of the complexities of the market, the vagaries of consumer behavior, and the utter absurdity of some of his benchmarks, I felt something.Alittle tug. I looked down. My shirt. The one I had chosen that morning on a whim. I didn’t remember ordering it. But there it was.ATeenage Mutant NinjaTurtle had gently but firmly tugged it. Suddenly, I felt a calm.

The tug was gentle, almost reassuring. I glanced at the shirt again. The shirt was my newest fashion statement.Areal statement of my inner rage. It was theTeenage Mutant NinjaTurtles focused on KPI keeping people irritated shirt.Atotal whim purchase, I confess. I had seen it advertised online, a brightly colored image flashing before me while scrolling through what felt like a never ending stream of ads, and I had been immediately drawn to the sheer audacity of it.The idea of wearing something so blatantly, hilariously opposed to the corporate world’s obsession with KPIs resonated deeply with my own internal cynicism. And to be totally honest, I’m a sucker for anything NinjaTurtles. I imagined it would be a cheap novelty item, probably printed on some scratchy, thin material. Something I’d wear once or twice for a laugh and then discard. But it was different.TheTurtles, each displaying a different expression of simmering annoyance, perfectly captured my mood in that moment. The font chosen for the phrase was aggressively bold, almost shouting its message.Yet, despite all of this, it did its job, it calmed me down. The consultant’s voice seemed to fade, his accusations sounding less and less urgent. I took a deep breath and, instead of erupting, found myself explaining, in a calm and measured tone, the extenuating circumstances, the challenges faced, and the proactive steps my team was taking to improve future performance.
