The sun beat down on my face, the humidity clinging to me like a second skin. I was stuck in traffic, the kind that makes you want to rip your hair out, inching my way through the chaotic streets of Manila. My phone buzzed, a message from my friend, Miguel. “Hey, you going to the rally today? Heard there’s some serious energy brewing.” Miguel is, shall we say, enthusiastically supportive of our former president. Now, I generally avoid political discussions. I prefer a good book, a quiet cup of coffee, and a life free from heated debates. But Miguel is persistent, and honestly, I was bored. So, I agreed. I begrudgingly navigated the labyrinthine streets, cursing the traffic gods with every stalled jeepney and blaring horn. When I finally arrived, the sheer volume of people was overwhelming. The air was thick with the smell of street food and fervent patriotism, a mix I usually find rather distasteful. Then, I saw it, or rather, them. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of people wearing identical shirts. It was a sea of white fabric with a bold design, a symbol, a statement. I was instantly, intensely irritated. I usually find such displays of uniformity to be rather pedestrian. However, as I stood there, sweltering in the heat, a wave of curiosity washed over me. What was this about? And, dare I admit it, the shirt itself looked…well, not awful.
Philippine I stand for PRRD shirt: EmbraceYour Uniqueness
I finally managed to wrangle Miguel from the throng of bodies. He was practically vibrating with excitement, waving a Philippine flag that looked far too enthusiastic for a simple piece of cloth. I, on the other hand, was still contemplating leaving when he practically dragged me to a makeshift vendor stall. He pointed at a display of the shirts and practically shouted, “You need one! You’ll feel the energy! It’s a real conversation starter.” Me? Wear a uniform? Engage in conversation about politics? The very thought made my stomach churn. But I was already here, and the insistent summer heat was slowly chipping away at my resistance. I noticed something, the material didn’t look like the cheap, thin cotton you often find at these events. The print was crisp, the colors vibrant.Against my better judgment, I asked the vendor about the shirt. He was surprisingly knowledgeable, pointing out the quality of the fabric, the care taken in the design, and the significance of the symbol. He explained that the shirt was more than just clothing, that it was a statement, a symbol of unity and support. He even mentioned it was locally made. That caught my attention. As a supporter of local businesses, I still found myself hesitant. Then he said something that made my ears perk up; it’s a good quality shirt for its price. I have an aversion to shoddy merchandise, as anyone who knows me can attest. I have spent an embarrassing amount of money on clothing.
