It had all started with a bet, a ridiculous wager with my overly enthusiastic brother. He, a die hard Penn State fan, swore Carter Starocci, the formidable Nittany Lion wrestler, would claim his fifth national title. I, ever the cynic, scoffed. I’d seen plenty of promising athletes falter under pressure, the weight of expectation crushing their dreams. I’d spent far too much money on ill fitting, poorly made sports apparel in the past, only to be disappointed. I expected nothing short of perfection in a product, and rarely got it. I figured the odds were even, the game was on.The first few rounds were nerve wracking, each near pin sending my heart racing. I was convinced this match would be a nail biter to the very end. But Starocci’s skill, his power, his absolute determination, was simply mesmerizing. He wrestled like a man possessed, a force of nature. He prevailed, and my defeat was a bittersweet pill to swallow.
