The humid NewYork City air hung thick and heavy that July afternoon, the kind of weather that makes even the most enthusiastic baseball fan consider staying inside. I, however, was heading to Citi Field, dragged by my perpetually optimistic friend, Sarah, who insisted we celebrate her recent promotion. Naturally, the only way to properly celebrate anything in Sarah’s world is with a Mets game. Now, I’m not exactly a baseball fanatic. I appreciate the strategy, the history, the athleticism, sure, but the sheer length of the games, the often lackluster performance of the home team, and the general cacophony of the stadium usually leave me feeling more drained than delighted. Nevertheless, I had agreed. Little did I know, this particular game was about to turn into a rather unexpected, and surprisingly enjoyable, experience. Sarah, beaming from ear to ear, was practically vibrating with excitement.And, I must admit, her infectious energy was starting to rub off.As we approached the stadium entrance, she pulled out a gift, a rolled up shirt, which she enthusiastically presented to me. I unrolled it with a raised eyebrow, fully expecting another Mets jersey, which, I thought, would only add to my potential misery. Instead, I found myself staring at something truly unique: a NewYork Mets Monkey D. Luffy One Piece shirt. My initial reaction, as a somewhat skeptical and critical individual, was one of utter bewilderment.

You see, I consider myself a person of refined tastes. I appreciate quality in all things, from my morning coffee to my evening cocktails, and especially in the clothes I wear. I have a very specific, bordering on obsessive, set of standards. Fabric must be soft, the cut impeccable, and the design, well, the design has to be just right.Typically, novelty t shirts, especially ones featuring a mashup of seemingly unrelated things like baseball and anime, are not something that would ever grace my wardrobe.They’re often ill fitting, made of cheap, scratchy material, and the graphics tend to be garish and poorly executed. My expectations, therefore, were incredibly low. I examined the shirt closely. The material, however, was surprisingly soft, a comfortable blend that felt immediately inviting against the skin.The print was crisp and vibrant, the iconic image of Monkey D. Luffy, the rubber-bodied protagonist of the anime One Piece, wearing a Mets cap and jersey. It was actually quite clever. I looked at Sarah, who was positively glowing. “Well?” she prodded, her eyes twinkling with anticipation. I had to admit, against all my preconceived notions, that I was intrigued. I slipped the shirt on right there in the concourse bathroom, fully prepared to be disappointed.
