The flickering neon sign of “Ernie’s Pizza” cast a warm glow on the rain-slicked Sacramento streets. Inside, the aroma of garlic and oregano mingled with the excited chatter of a dozen of us, huddled around a table piled high with pizzas and half-empty soda bottles.Tonight was the culmination of a long-held tradition: the annual Kings season kickoff viewing party. My friend, Mark, the most die-hard Kings fan I know, had organized it. He’s usually a whirlwind of nervous energy before a game, pacing, muttering about missed free throws, and generally making everyone around him anxious. But tonight, he was different. He was radiating a strange sort of serenity, a calm I hadn’t witnessed in years. He kept gesturing excitedly at something, and I realized he was showing off his brand new shirt.

My initial reaction, I confess, was one of skeptical amusement. I’m notoriously hard to please when it comes to anything related to sports apparel.The graphics are often cheesy, the materials scratchy, and the fit, well, let’s just say it rarely flatters. I’m a stickler for quality, and I have a particular distaste for anything that screams “tourist trap.” But Mark, bless his heart, was practically vibrating with pride. He’d even gone to the trouble of wearing the shirt inside out when we first met at the pizzeria as a way to keep it a secret until he revealed it to his friends. “Wait for it, wait for it!” he’d said with a grin that would have made even the grumpiest of game officials smile. He was so pleased with his new garment, and seeing him so happy almost made me forget that the Kings were about to play a game. Mark was like a big, fluffy, happy dog that had just gotten his favorite new toy, and I was happy for him.
