The salty sea air whipped at my face, carrying the scent of fried clams and distant seagulls.The sun, a fiery orb sinking towards the horizon, painted the sky in hues of orange and purple. I was on the very edge of the coast, a small pier jutting out, watching the waves crash against the weathered wooden pilings.This was my happy place, my escape from the daily grind, and most importantly, my refuge from the onslaught of…well, everything. But even here, with the vastness of the ocean stretching before me, I couldn’t completely escape the clutches of my own critical nature. I have a very specific set of preferences, a refined palate for quality, and a deep distrust of anything that smacks of the mass produced or the cheaply made. My friends often tease me about it, calling me a purist, a snob, a difficult customer.And truthfully, I don’t really mind. I know what I like, and I know what I don’t.And usually, I don’t.

This particular evening, I wasn’t alone. My nephew, Leo, a budding basketball fanatic, was with me. He was bouncing on the balls of his feet, his eyes shining with excitement. “Uncle David,” he blurted out, his voice a little higher than usual, “can we talk about the Celtics?The season is about to start!They are going to be amazing. They have a shot at the championship.” I had learned over time that indulging Leo, however brief, would eventually lead to something I actually enjoyed. So, I let him ramble, nodding occasionally, offering the barest minimum of conversational encouragement. He’d recently gotten into sports, and I’d been forced to begrudgingly educate myself on the intricacies of his passion. He wore his Celtics gear everywhere, his jerseys often slightly askew from all the enthusiastic movement. He had, like most kids, a vast collection of what I considered to be poorly constructed, logo heavy attire. He was, as usual, wearing one of his Celtics shirts.
