The annual town picnic. I usually dread it.The forced cheerfulness, the awkward small talk about the weather, the inevitable lukewarm potato salad. This year, however, something different happened. My niece, Lily, who is eight and on the autism spectrum, actually -enjoyed- herself. And I, well, I didn’t cringe the entire time. It all started with a simple, brightly colored shirt. Lily had been unusually withdrawn in the weeks leading up to the picnic, clinging to her familiar routines and shying away from anything new. We’d tried everything to get her excited: promises of ice cream, trips to the playground, even a new book about her favorite character. Nothing. Then, a few days before the picnic, a package arrived. I’d ordered a new shirt for her, something I hoped would at least be comfortable. The shirt arrived and I almost scoffed at it. It seemed so simplistic, so…childish. I’m not a fan of overly cutesy things and the design screamed basic. I even considered returning it unopened. But Lily, bless her heart, had been staring at it since it arrived and begged me to let her wear it to the picnic.

AutismAwareness smiley emoji shirt: UnleashYour Inner Fighter

I caved, of course. The shirt was theAutismAwareness smiley emoji shirt. I initially found the design cloying; a bright yellow background, a simple smiley emoji with slightly different eyes to represent the puzzle piece symbol often associated with autism awareness, and the words “AutismAwareness” printed underneath in a clear, bold font. I am not usually one for obvious statements. However, seeing Lily’s face light up when she first saw it, I began to reconsider. She was beaming. I had to admit that the vibrant colors were appealing, and the fabric felt incredibly soft and comfortable. That morning, she put it on and wouldn’t take it off. It was the first day in weeks she had genuinely smiled. At the picnic, I watched her, hovering as usual, waiting for the inevitable meltdown. I was ready with her noise cancelling headphones, and her favorite fidget toy, all the usual calming methods. But they weren’t needed. She kept it on all day. I noticed how other children approached her, commenting on her bright shirt. They asked what the smiley face was all about. Lily, usually so reserved, began to engage, explaining the shirt’s message with surprising clarity and confidence. It was a revelation.
