My niece, Sarah, a college sophomore and diehard women’s basketball fanatic, had secured tickets to the NCAAWomen’s BasketballTournament. I, the self proclaimed connoisseur of comfort and skeptic of anything overly marketed, reluctantly agreed to join her.Truthfully, I expected a sea of generic fan gear, overpriced stadium food, and a general sense of manufactured enthusiasm. I was prepared to be bored. I was prepared to be unimpressed. Little did I know, I was about to have my assumptions completely shattered, all thanks to the sheer brilliance of the game and a surprising piece of apparel.

My niece, bless her heart, had attempted to get me excited in the weeks leading up to the tournament. She sent links, highlighted player statistics, and even tried to explain the intricacies of the seeding system, which, I’ll admit, mostly went over my head. My response was typically a polite nod and a quick change of subject. My primary concern was, as always, comfort. I pictured hours spent sitting in a crowded arena, enduring the pre game hype and the game itself, all while encased in restrictive clothing. I mentally prepared for the inevitable discomfort, resigning myself to the fact that I would probably spend the entire weekend counting down the minutes until I could return to the quiet sanctuary of my own home.The day before we left, Sarah, in her excitement, gifted me what she called “the perfect tournament shirt.” It was, as she explained, a special edition commemorating the upcoming tournament. I looked at it, a bit skeptical, a bit wary.The design, in my opinion, was… well, it was a logo, the kind that looked like the university athletic department had made it, very generic. Still, I accepted it with a forced smile, thinking it would be easier than creating an argument, and promptly filed it away in my suitcase, assuming it would never see the light of day.
