In loving memory Michael Matthew Ferrell This season, we celebrate and honor the life of our dear friend, mentor, and all around force of artistic life — Michael Matthew Ferrell. Michael had (and will continue to have) an everlasting impact on the national, Twin Cities, and Spotlight Education theater community. He walked alongside our programming from the very start and changed more lives than he will ever know. Michael’s rehearsal environment was rooted in hard work, growth, endless energy and love, much like his life. He had an extraordinary ability to demand artistic excellence while always giving space for exploration, trying new things and most importantly, encouraging one another to be our individual and collective best in any given moment. Having been with Spotlight Education since the first Showcase in 2000, Michael’s handprints are embedded within the Triple Threat and Featured Dancer curriculum. He will remain a part of the memories and our story at Hennepin Theatre Trust, forever having impacted our past, present and future. To the man who could never quite stand still, we promise to never stop moving.

Dear friends, It’s already clear that this year’s Spotlight Showcase is a display of talent and hard work. What might not be as apparent is the optimism and hope built into this event. Students had every reason not to try. This performance is evidence of their irrepressible resilience and drive to create. Showcase is a culmination of a year’s work, and this year’s theme is Spotlight Belongs To Us. These students have taken difficult circumstances and owned their responses. They showed up all year — physically, mentally, emotionally, creatively. Undoubtedly, these students deserve a standing ovation. We would also like to offer our gratitude to you for supporting Spotlight students. It is because of you that we are here celebrating Minnesota’s dedicated students and their year of working through theater evaluations, a rigorous rehearsal process, and collaboration with professional theater makers. A special thanks goes out to our Showcase sponsors: PNC Bank, Sun Country Airlines, United Properties and Hilton. Your support provides this opportunity to shine at a time when students need it — and deserve it — the most. We also thank our donors, whose ongoing support allows us to provide transformative arts education experiences statewide. We thank our educators, teaching artists and community representatives for their hard work making Spotlight Showcase 2021 a reality. Seeing students dance and sing their hearts out in front of their schools and along Hennepin Avenue is an affirmation of how our statewide programming helps students build confidence, sense of community and theater skills.

2021 Spotlight Belongs To Us
Thanks also goes out to the Spotlight Education staff. This production would not be happening without their hard work over the past year. The results show a deep commitment to providing Minnesota’s students and educators every possible opportunity to receive support while learning and growing. This year has been about many things: grief, loss, support, strength, community, passion, to name a few. It has also been about action. We hope you are inspired by the unstoppable action of Spotlight students to continue supporting young artists. As someone who shares our commitment to Minnesota’s youth, we’re excited to share with you this celebration of our state’s outstanding high school musical theater talent. Enjoy the show! Sincerely,
Mark Nerenhausen President and CEO

Theatre Educator
Theatre Educator Award Each year, Spotlight Education recognizes an outstanding educator for their work with theater students and the advancement of arts education. Congratulations to our 2021 Theatre Educator Award Recipient:
“Growing up in the arts I have met many amazing people who have shaped me into the artist I am, but none as vibrant and passionate as Ms. Karki. I first met Karki when a freshman-year me went to audition. I didn’t know a single person at Totino-Grace, but when I saw Karki surrounded by laughing students, I knew I was home. She immediately welcomed me into a community of support, and I will forever be grateful for my time in Totino Grace arts. Christine Karki’s program has given me lifelong lessons of perseverance, professionalism, and, most importantly, community.” — Halle Audette, Totino Grace student
