The spotted nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes) lives in symbiosis with the Swiss pine. This passerine bird feeds on the seeds of the tree, which it picks from the pine cones with its pointed beak. In the autumn, the spotted nutcracker hides thousands of seeds as winter stock. It finds about 80 percent of these hidden seeds, and the remaining stock sprouts new Swiss pines. It remains a mystery how the spotted nutcracker manages to find the seeds it hid in the autumn in the snow-covered winter landscape.

The southernmost valley of the Grisons is known for its picturesque villages, rugged mountain landscape, and culture. The world-famous artist Alberto Giacometti and his family hailed from Val Bregaglia, and Stampa was the centre for her work. There are numerous works by this family of artists on display at the Ciäsa Granda Museum, Centro Giacometti, and Atelier Giacometti. The Palazzo Castelmur is also well worth a visit; it is home to an exhibition about Grisons confectioners as well as the historical archive of Val Bregaglia.

Even architecturally, the Muzeum is a work of art. Located on the site of a medieval monastery, the museum consists of the former rectory, the reception and farm buildings, as well as some new additions. From May to October, you can marvel at a unique glacier phenomenon in the Cavaglia Glacier Garden: the Glacier Mills (moulins or “pots of the giants”, as locals call them) that were formed by the Palü glacier. Over thousands of years, glacial water, debris and gravel have worked the hard rock, grinding huge holes – some of them up to 15 m deep – into the bedrock. Access only by train or on foot.
