T

his holiday season, “It’s like riding a bike” will take on a whole new meaning to hundreds of metro area children thanks to the generosity of former OU football coach Bob Stoops and Heisman Trophy winner Jason White.

Why are bikes the gift of choice? White, the former Sooner signal-caller, is a big believer that there’s something special about the freedom that comes with getting a bike — a chance to get outside of the house to play.

Five years ago, Scooter Proctor brought an idea of raising funds to give bikes to local children in need to White.

“I think with all the things out there nowadays with the phones, the video gaming, you know, I think some of the love for bikes has been lost,” White said. “But I think when these kids, not knowing what they’re getting for Christmas, or if they’re getting Christmas, to deliver them a bike, it’s amazing to watch.”

“This is our sixth year,” White said. “He said, ‘You just need to come out and watch,’ and so I did. And we delivered 54 bikes the first year.”

Since then, the Bucks for Bikes campaign has ramped up thanks to the support of Stoops’ nonprofit, the HBC Champions Foundation, and White’s business, Air Comfort Solutions.

“It’s grown every year,” White said. “Last year we did a thousand bikes. … We’re shooting for 2,000 this year,” said White.

“What’s better than a child getting a bike? I mean, really, that’s as good as it gets.” Well said, Coach Stoops.

Overall, the 2026 schedule is one of the most difficult schedules in the country with matchups against six teams that advanced to the 2025 NCAA Championships and showdowns with all three championship final competitors. boydstreet.com

“Our nonconference is ridiculous,” Kindler said.

“We’re meeting Michigan at Michigan, and our opener is against Utah, UCLA and LSU, who are all in the top five in the preseason poll. So, we’re talking about that’s some crazy stuff right there. Very tough to do. This is probably our most difficult home slate that we’ve ever had in the 20 years that I have been here. In the SEC, you’re looking at Georgia coming in, Alabama coming in, LSU coming in, Auburn coming in. ... It’s going to be crazy at home too, not just away.”

Despite the challenge of the 2026 slate, the Sooners are embracing the opportunity.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Kindler said. “This is not something that we’re not used to. We definitely fill our schedule with those moments so that when the postseason comes, we’re ready for anything.”

As Oklahoma prepares for a new season with fresh faces as leaders, a challenging schedule and a new look rotation, Kindler has been impressed with several gymnasts who have stepped up with a new opportunity to compete.

“Keira Wells and Hannah Scheible are taking on additional responsibilities this year, and they are embracing it,” Kindler said. “Keira has never touched the uneven bars in the Lloyd Noble Center until the Sooner Spotlight in December, and she showed us a lot. She was able to really perform in the moment. I thought she did a phenomenal job. ... She has stepped up big time in the offseason, seeing the most improvement from any athlete is probably from Keira.”

Scheible was injured last year and unable to compete, and Kindler said she “looks incredible and has really committed herself in the offseason.” Kindler added she is likely to compete on three events, “which is huge for our team.”

While the Sooners will rely on a handful of newcomers to get back to the top of the women’s college gymnastics mountain, they return a ton of talent and production.

Faith Torrez is a key returner for the Sooners and brings a wealth of talent and experience to the team. Torrez finished last season ranked as the top all-around performer in the country. Her ability to perform under pressure and contribute high scores makes her one of the standout gymnasts for Oklahoma. With her leadership and competitive edge, Torrez is expected to play a significant role in the team’s pursuit of another championship run this season.

“She’s had a great preseason and honestly, it’s her leadership where we’ve seen the biggest jump,” Kindler said. “She’s had to really develop her voice this fall. That senior class was strong last year, and she’s kind of stepping into those shoes and being the voice for those younger athletes on the floor. I think that’s really where most of her growth comes. I’ve seen her improve on bars every

T

here is a dynasty brewing in Norman, Oklahoma. The University of Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team is not only the defending national champion but is also ranked as the No. 1 team in the country heading into the 2026 season. It’s safe to say the Sooners are on a roll.

OU has developed into the gold standard of women’s college gymnastics. Under the guidance of legendary head coach K.J. Kindler, the Sooners claimed their seventh national championship last season, with all of those titles having come over the last 11 years.

Despite the unparalleled success and having won three of the last four national titles, the Sooner machine has not slowed down. Kindler and her talented staff continue reloading the roster with unquestioned talent and resetting the high bar of expectations.

As OU begins its chase for championship number eight, the challenge of replacing the incredible senior class looms large. This group of “heavy hitters” included Jordan Bowers, Audrey Davis and Dani Sievers, who Kindler said “were incredible leaders for our team, not just on the floor but in the gym every day.” While they are no longer on the roster, all three are still closely connected to the program. Davis is back as a student coach, while Bowers and Sievers both still live in the area.

“Our team is navigating how to fill those leadership shoes for sure right now,” Kindler said. “I will say we have an incredible freshman class, and we also have some women that are really stepping up. There’s going to be some confidence building. No doubt about it. We definitely need to focus on that. We are just really trying to fill those shoes.

“These women (Bowers, Davis and Sievers) are hanging around,” Kindler continued. “They love it here. I think that says a lot about our program, and they’re certainly giving their support to this team. It’s hard to see them go, but luckily, they haven’t actually left the area. So, we get to see them on a regular basis.”

One constant with OU women’s gymnastics is the willingness to challenge itself. OU welcomes four top 25 teams to Lloyd Noble Center in 2026 with one of the most anticipated dual meets of the season slated for Feb. 20 against No. 2 LSU. Also traveling to Norman are No. 8 Alabama, No. 11 Auburn and No. 12 Georgia.

On the road, the Sooners face six ranked teams, including four preseason top-10 SEC foes. OU travels to No. 3 Florida, No. 7 Missouri, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 10 Arkansas and No. 14 Michigan and faces No. 18 Arizona at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.

single year. Bars were her nemesis when she walked in the door, and she really perfected that event. I can see her getting a 10 on that event, and she has definitely improved a great deal there. But I would say leadership is her No. 1 focus right now.”

Lily Pederson is back for her sophomore season after making a massive impact during her first season on campus. Pederson finished as an All-American on the vault and bars and was a member of the All-SEC Freshman team and was All-SEC on both vault and bars. Her work ethic and adaptability have stood out, and this year she could be a contributor in the all-around. Kindler said Pederson has grown the most on floor. While she was in and out of that lineup last season, Kindler expects her to be a staple on that event this year.

“She’s phenomenal on the other three events, and she has elevated the difficulty of her bar routine substantially this year,” Kindler said. “She was trying to learn a new release move on the high bar all last year, and it just didn’t come to fruition. We stuck with her same old same old, but this year, she is trying something new, something different and it will allow her to score 10 on bars. I don’t think last season she quite had that potential, so that’s huge for our team this season.”

OU also welcomes back returning All-Americans Addison Fatta and Elle Mueller, who will play key roles for the Sooners. In addition to the returning talent, the Sooners brought in the top recruiting class in the country, and the coaches understand the challenge of getting everyone ready to compete at the highest level.

“As a coaching staff, we’re very dialed in on readying them as soon as we can, and there’s a lot of learning that must take place in this very short five months that we have them before they take the floor,” Kindler said. “Certainly we’re looking for that in recruiting, but I actually think a lot of it is developed when they arrive, not only from guidance from the coaching staff, but I think our team is instrumental in kind of guiding them and leading them down the path. So that’s incredibly important.”

While the Sooners will count on the incoming freshmen to make an impact, the young returning core has Oklahoma in position to be considered the preseason favorites to repeat as national champions for the third time in program history.

“Last year we had 40% of our routines done by freshmen, the most in the NCAA,” Kindler said. “Honestly, to win a national championship with that percentage of your team being freshmen, true freshmen, that’s pretty remarkable. That just means we have a pretty stellar sophomore class, right?”

As the Sooners prepare for the incredible challenge of a daunting 2026 schedule, there is one challenge 24 | January 2025

that continues to be an uphill battle for women’s gymnastics — a consistent sellout crowd.

“The crowd makes all the difference in the world. It truly does,” Kindler said. “And there’s several reasons — the crowd obviously creates an energy in the arena that allows our team to kind of release themselves and to be inspired. And it’s not that they aren’t already. These women work so hard, but having that crowd there to support you, marching out of that tunnel, it’s immensely important for them to feel that support and inspiration when they march out.

“I think our crowd is a little bit of a late arriving crowd,” Kindler continued. “I would love for our crowd to be in the seats when that march in happens, because that is kind of the beginning. It sets the tone for the whole competition. And it’s also that moment where you can intimidate the opponent, and to be honest, a half-empty arena isn’t too intimidating for an opponent.”

Currently, OU ranks fifth in the nation for attendance despite being the No. 1 team in the country. The team’s remarkable success on the national stage makes the attendance challenge especially frustrating, as the athletes deserve to perform in front of packed stands that match their elite status.

“I think what I could say is this: We’re going to provide you the best show possible. You are going to see some of the best athleticism and creativity and artistry that you could ever see in any sporting event,” Kindler said. “But also, think of it this way, you are helping us recruit. Because I can tell you this, if I’m a recruit and I’m nitpicki ng the details, where should I go? And I’ve got an institution that sells out every single competition. And then I have an institution that’s half full some of the time. It is very persuasive to have that attendance.”

As Oklahoma prepares to defend its national title, several key factors must align for the Sooners to reach the top again. It begins with the continued development and consistency of their talented sophomore class — many of whom played an instrumental role as freshmen last season. Add the integration of a top-ranked recruiting class that adds depth while successfully preparing these newcomers within a short five-month window to be ready to compete at the highest level.

Another significant aspect is the team’s ability to foster a high-energy, supportive environment at competitions. Consistently filling the arena with engaged fans not only boosts athlete performance but also strengthens the program’s appeal to future recruits. Ultimately, a combination of internal growth, effective mentorship and external support from the community will be essential for Oklahoma to secure back-to-back national titles.– BSM

Following a 22-6 season and a state tournament berth, the Tigers return the nucleus of a team that dazzled with exquisite offense and pesky defense.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi signee Beau Billingsley headlines a dangerous scoring and defensive backcourt that also includes Montrel Combs-Pierce, Gideon Holt and Navy Football signee Addox Sanders.

Norman supplemented that core with transfers Caison Robinson and Aidan Cooper-Kelley, who head coach Cory Cole believes are great culture fits.

It’s a season of new for Norman girls basketball as Chad Thrailkill takes over the program. Along with him, there is new leadership for a Tigers team that appeared in the state semifinals a season ago and won 25 games. Seniors Ady Hybl and Avery Ragland and junior Bailey Johnson are now in elevated roles, but the same uptempo style of play remains.

First-year coach Jess Powell has a clear objective for his team.

“I like that every day is a new chance for our team to grow and understand what it takes to play with maximum effort,” Thrailkill said. “I also like the leadership from our two seniors in helping the process of expectations and growth.”

Powell has an excellent foundation to build his program on as he returns 126-pound state qualifier Jackson McCurley who, as a sophomore, is only getting better, as well as 285-pounder Oakley Caruthers, a defending regional champion and two-time state qualifier. Those two will be integral in helping guide the Tigers through a tough schedule that begins with top-ranked Edmond North.

The Tigers will have no problem generating points, and Cole is impressed with the strength and flexibility of his team, commending the squad for its ability to play at a fast or slow pace. That ability is crucial with an improved Piedmont and defending champion Deer Creek in the district.

“We have assembled a tough schedule, plus the district will be anyone’s to take,” Cole said. “It’s going to be a grind to compete again for our third straight district championship.”

Softball star Marcella Attar headlines a younger group that will also see more meaningful minutes for Norman. Their ability to defend along with the upperclassmen will allow the Tigers to compete in a very tough district with new challenges every night.

“We are focused on mastering the things that don’t take talent and using that as our springboard to getting a little better every day,” Powell said. “The goal is for each wrestler in the room to finish the season better than they started it and grow in the program.”

“We will run from no one, and we need to see the best to have a clear vision of what they look like so we can work to achieve that ourselves,” Powell said. “The schedule provides us an opportunity for a young team to do that and learn how to compete no matter the circumstances.”

SWIMMING

Norman High finished seventh for women and 12th for men in the state championships meet last season, a successful ending to a season that saw the program securely in the top half of the state. On the women’s side, Kaida Bradley returns after she posted a personal best in the 100-meter backstroke at state that placed her sixth overall. She, along with Gabby Beck and Kennedy Richardson, will keep Norman in contention.

Meanwhile, sophomore Max Short headlines a younger men’s program. Short gained valuable experience as a freshman and will look to build upon that productive year in 2025-26. Head coach Kent Nicholson believes that both the men’s and women’s team will feature competitive relay teams that he is excited to see compete with the likes of the Edmond schools.

It’s a new day for Norman North basketball, a team filled with new names and a new head coach. Jordy Harris takes over a program that won the district last season before being bounced in the area round of the postseason.

Longtime boys basketball coach Kellen McCoy assumes the reins of the T-Wolves girls program, and he already has a handle on what this team’s strength is offensively.

It’s safe to say head coach Justin DeAngelis is hyped up for this season, and for good reason. The Norman North girls program is set to roster the most girls it ever has for the 2025-26 season and will fill 10 to 11 weight classes, according to DeAngelis.

Jamarrion Hardeman is North’s leading returning scorer, but he will mesh well with sophomores Cam Collins and junior Owen Wynn, the first two of whom are elevations from within the Norman North program.

“How much this group of guys has enjoyed being around each other,” Harris said.

“And they play together really well, too.”

Football players Byron Mason and Rylan Humphrey are set to be contributors as well, and just like the football season, this basketball schedule presents nightly challenges.

“This district is going to be tough,” Harris noted. “Every team in it is good. A ton of great coaches, new players, it’s going to be tough to win every night in our district.

“Post play and transition offense is our strength,” McCoy said.

The elder statesman of the squad is 6-foot4 center Julieta Diaz, who has shown improvement in the offseason. She will be critical in opening up the game for young guards Kinley McCoy and Giada Gates and sharpshooter Ava Watkins.

McCoy has noted that this team has seen continued growth and development this summer, but the season will be competitive.

“Our district will be tough,” McCoy said.

“Our team will have to compete each night, and they will certainly be ready.”

Ava Granados and Lakyn Farrington, a couple of state qualifiers from a year ago, will be tasked as leaders for this rising program.

On the boys side, Kyler Lester and Jeremiah Harrison lead the way after both were state qualifiers last season. The team’s biggest improvements have been in the lighter weights, which are now classes that DeAngelis feels really good about.

The balance on both sides will be tested throughout the season as the T-Wolves’ schedule consists of powerhouses Tuttle and Stillwater.

“It should really test us and show what we need to work on,” said DeAngelis.

SWIMMING

The Norman North swim program is a veteran team. For the boys, Greg Williams and Patrick Nguyen lead the group as the top returners. Williams placed in the top quarter at state, and Nguyen having a good showing at the state meet as well. As a team, the T-Wolves finished eighth in the state a season ago.

On the girls side, Jemerie Brister and Maggie Koch will headline a deeper Norman North squad, and an eager one as well.

“They worked hard (during the offseason) and were excited to get to racing,” said head coach Kent Nicholson. Nicholson also remarked that the competition will be tough as the Edmond schools are strong again, but with a veteran, experienced team, Norman North should be up to the challenge.

It will be a new look Lions team in the 2025-26 season, after an impressive 21-8 season last year that resulted in a trip to the state tournament. Moore loses some key weapons such as Tristan Hankins and Roman Miller, but now there’s a chance for new faces to step into a bigger role.

The Lions had a strong finish in the 202425 season under head coach Robert Washington. Now, they prepare to take another step with talented freshmen and returning state qualifiers from a year ago.

Washington loves what both sides have shown leading up to the season.

The Moore girls and boys swimming team will have 12 returners and five new swimmers for the 2025-26 season. There’s excitement going into the season for the team and head coach Landon Adamo.

Head coach Gregg Hardin expects his young team to play with energy and effort.

“Our guys will compete at a high level on both ends of the court and do it collectively,” Hardin said.

The Lions don’t return any starters, but they’ll have senior Nate Torres, who averaged 4.5 ppg off the bench. Torres provides leadership on and off the court and will defend the opponent’s best guard.

Expectations are high at Moore, as they always are under Gregg Hardin.

“We want to continue the Moore Lion tradition of competing every game and hopefully peak in the second part of the season,” Hardin said.

Moore will have big matchups with Union and Owasso in the 2025-26 season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL It’s a new era for Moore girls basketball with first-year head coach Ashley Lamb taking over the reins. Lamb has over eight years of coaching experience that she is bringing to Moore.

It didn’t take long for Lamb to figure out what the strengths are for this club. She has noticed the positive attitude with the group of girls.

“We have learned pretty quickly this year that we have a positive and resilient culture during adversity,” Lamb said.

The Lions return two contributors in seniosr Michelle Anum and Jeriah Alexander.

Anum was an all-district honorable mention selection, while Alexander was the Sixth Man of the Year.

The girls are focused on getting better each time, whether that’s in practice or the games.

“This season will be one for growth and development,” Lamb said. “We plan to compete every time we step on the floor to the best of our ability. I think by the end we will surprise some people.”

“Our strengths this year are youth and heart,” Washington said. “We are a really young team this year, starting four freshmen. We are not scared of anyone.”

Sophomore Jalania Lang turned some heads in her freshman season for the girls, finishing with a record of 5-1 while competing at 125 pounds. She was a state qualifier last year and placed second in the PC Tournament.

The boys bring back junior Liam Taylor.

Taylor had a great sophomore campaign, placing fourth at the PC Tournament and having a record of 5-2. Now, Taylor is looking to take a massive step and become a state qualifier.

Washington believes this will be a great learning moment for his young team.

“This year will be a learning experience on how to wrestle in 6A and outworking our opponents. We will grow as a team,” Washington said.

Junior Isabella Doonkeen is another state qualifier who will be a pivotal part of the team for the girls, along with sophomore Autumn Steagall.

Sophomore Carson Sherwin and freshman Tre Stephens are talented underclassmen who will see a lot of time for the boys.

The Lions will have big tournaments on the calendar, such as the Moore Festival and regionals.

“We will need to stay together and believe in the process,” Washington said.

For Adamo, he wants to see his teams stay together and compete at a high level.

“Our team is always united and always representing the Lions in a mature and professional manner,” Adamo said. “We are dedicated to each other and being reliable.”

Elena Phan qualified for state in the 200 free, ending with a time of 2:15.8 for the Lions. Maddox McHenry broke the minute mark in the 100 free with a time of 59.3 seconds.

Christian Davis has also been one to recognize from his time on the 500 free at a 26.7 and the 100 breast at a 1:21.0.

The Lions nominated Alex Pershall and Samantha Davidson as their team captains for the girls and boys, which is a special acknowledgement.

Adamo loves the mindset of his team and the support around the Moore community.

“The team chemistry has grown through dedication, standards, goals and Passion,” Adamo said. “We have stepped up this year in terms of reaching out to sponsorships, growth in community involvement and setting harder standards.”

The Lions will compete in the Metro Senior Classic on Jan. 3 at Mitch Park, along with conference and regionals toward the end of the season.

It was an impressive season for the Sabercats last year, posting a 20-8 record and a trip to area under head coach Tim Stogsdill.

It’s a young group that Southmoore has on the mat for both the girls and boys, but they have experience and talent to go with it.

Southmoore swimming is geared up for the 2025-26 season, returning six swimmers from a year ago. Head coach Kamden Purcell has some talent back, names such as junior Kera Jaworsky for the girls and senior Kyle Pachankis for the boys.

Junior Tyson Pogi averaged 22 points per game last year, along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Pogi was the COAC Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2024-25.

The goal is always the same for Southmoore: Make some noise in the postseason.

“We always set a goal to be at the state tournament in March, and we’re going to work hard in doing that,” Stogsdill said.

Juniors Jasper Chaves and Gabe Willingham are both looking to add more production after a successful sophomore campaign.

Last season, Chaves averaged 12 points and 4 rebounds per game, while Willingham put up 6 points and 3 rebounds per game. Both were COAC All-Conference Honorable Mentions a year ago.

Now, it’s about putting all the pieces together for the Sabercats.

“We need to stay healthy,” Stogsdill said.

“Defend, rebound and take care of the basketball will be critical for us.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL It was a 4-21 record for Southmoore in the 2024-25 season, but the Sabercats return four starters and a ton of production on offense. Head coach Kayla Fourkiller said it was great for her team to gain experience last year.

“We are young, but they gained a lot of court time last season,” Fourkiller said. “We focus a lot on defense to develop that into our team strength.”

Junior Sabrina Hernandez was a bright spot for the Sabercats last year, averaging 8.5 points per game. Hernandez was a COAC Honorable Mention, as was senior Lexi Tompkins.

The girls return their state qualifier and team takedown leader, sophomore Myleigh Souza, who caught everyone’s attention last season. Souza competes in the 100-pound weight class and will look to put up more points for her team this year. Junior Marley Lewis was a state alternate in the 2024-25 season and will be another big piece in the girls’ lineup.

Jaworsky has been cutting time and has a track record of placing well in the 100 free.

She will be a key weapon for the girl and will play a role with the relay team.

Drake Picott and Nakwaine Carter are the only seniors in the boys’ starting lineup, mixed with some up-and-comers. Last season, Picott led the boys with 32 victories, while Carter finished with a record of 24-11 in the heavyweight division.

Pachankis is the top swimmer for the boys, competing in the 100 free and 50 free for the Sabercats.

Head coach Zac George has noticed improvement with his teams and the development over the years at the junior high and varsity level.

The Sabercats will honor their seniors toward the end of the regular season, but the work starts now to turn this into a successful season.

Sophomore Micco Taylor had 27 wins last season, led the team in takedowns and was a state alternate for the Sabercats.

“Most of the team has moved up a class from last year,” George said. “They’re stronger and in better shape. We had a great turnout this season with roughly 100 wrestlers across the junior high and varsity teams.”

“We want to become a better and stronger team,” Purcell said. “We’re looking forward to the senior meet, so we can celebrate our seniors and really give them all the spotlight.”

“I want to see us swim fast and hard every day, keeping with it and never skipping a day out of the water,” Purcell said.

For the Sabercats to take a big jump forward, it will be about focusing on the little things and working hard every day.

“Consistency will be a key for us,” George said. “We have to be in the room every day working together to get better and getting as much mat time as possible. Also, improving our technique and focusing on doing things the right way.”

“We are expecting our returning starters to use the experience they gained last year to lead and grow our young players,” Fourkiller said.

The Sabercats will be looking forward to playing in their in-district rivalries, along with critical district matchups late in the year.

“For us to have a successful season, we need to build team chemistry and keep players healthy,” Fourkiller said. “We harp on team defense, and we’ll need to put more points on the board on offense.” boydstreet.com

The Jaguars finished the 2024-25 season with a record of 22-6 and another trip to the state tournament. That is now back-to-back trips for Westmoore under head coach Todd Millwee.

Westmoore wrestling will start a new era with first-year head coach Bryson McGowan. McGowan has spent time on the Westmoore staff and has playing experience at Oklahoma City University. He brings back several key contributors for the 2025-26 season.

Westmoore has top returners back for girls and boys swimming. Head coach Scott Teel is excited about the opportunity and challenge ahead with his team.

It will be a new look squad for Westmoore after losing their top six players from a year ago. Junior Tristian Ladd will be the spotlight for the Jaguars after seeing playing time last year. Ladd is a shot creating guard that continues to improve his game.

Millwee talks about how important it is for his young guys to get experience early in their career.

“We’re expecting to reach our potential in February after a lot of these guys get more experience at this level, that’s what it’s all about,” Millwee said.

The Jaguars will also see production from senior Taveon Berry and sophomore Brayden Ball. They both will be active on the offensive end.

Westmoore will have big district matchups on the schedule, such as Edmond Memorial and Mustang.

GIRLS BASKETBALL There’s much anticipation and excitement around the Westmoore Lady Jaguars this season. First-year head coach Emma Andrews arrives at a great time and is in a comfortable spot in her first season. It helps when you return your leading scorer.

Senior Kyiah Prestridge exploded in her junior year, averaging 21 points, 5 assists and 11 rebounds. She was named MVP for the district and first-team all-conference.

Sophomore Aliyah Prestridge is another starter back for the Jaguars. Aliyah Prestridge posted 11 points and 7 rebounds last season and was a first-team all-district selection.

“Our fast-paced offense and aggressive defense are big strengths of ours,” Andrews said. “We have the mentality of setting the pace of the game, and I think that really plays well into the aggressive style of play.”

The Lady Jaguars will be a team to keep an eye on in Class 6A girls basketball, and they’ll have an opportunity to do special things.

“We want to make it and compete at the state championship,” Andrews said. “We want to take this program back to a high level that it was 10 years ago.”

The girls have eight wrestlers back from last year, led by senior Kyrain Perez. She is a two-time defending state champion and Fargo All-American in the 100-pound weight class. She finished with a record of 39-3.

Senior Kyrstan Perez will be another tough out on this team. Also a defending state champion, she was 40-1 in the 105-weight pound class a year ago. Senior Hannah Lopez will be a new addition to the team.

Lopez is a previous state champion and three-time state placer.

The boys return senior Jackson Yeatman who placed at state in his junior season.

Yeatman had a record of 27-15 last year in the 132-pound class. Seniors Gavin Chatham and Orlando McClain are expected to have a big season for the Jaguars.

“We want to see us get 1% better every day, despise complacency, grow together as a team and uphold the standards of Westmoore wrestling,” McGowan said. “If we do that, all the results we want and have earned will handle itself.”

“We’re looking to get better each time out and try to be swimming our best at regionals,” Teel said. “We don’t really worry about times and places until January when our times start to come down.”

The girls return their top performer, junior Madison Bowdler. Bowdler competes in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

The boys return three legs of two state qualifying relays in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Senior Ethan Hoang will highlight those relay teams. Hoang also qualified in the 100 backstroke last year.

Anhhao Nguyen and Andrew Trinh will be the other two legs that will be counted on to put up good times.

Newcomer Lincoln Reed will be plugged in for both relays and will be someone to keep an eye on.

The Jaguars are in good shape for the 2025-26 season with their experience and talented newcomers.

or more than 90 years, Primrose Funeral Home has served the Norman community, walking alongside families during some of life’s most meaningful and difficult moments. That legacy now continues in a new location designed to meet the needs of today’s families while preserving the compassion and care Primrose is known for.

According to General Manager Roger Allen, the decision to move was both practical and purposeful.

The original Primrose homestead had reached a point where upkeep became increasingly challenging.

“After more than 90 years, we just needed a new space,” Allen said. “We wanted something brighter, more open and more reflective of how families gather today.”

After careful economic forecasting and planning, Primrose received approval to pursue a new building. In September of 2024, an unexpected opportunity emerged. Allen received a call about a property for sale on North Flood Avenue, a highly visible and accessible part of Norman. The building, formerly a brewery, sparked interest and raised a few eyebrows.

Transforming a brewery into a funeral home is unconventional, but the bones of the building offered exactly what Primrose was seeking.

Primrose partnered with the architect who designed the original structure located at 3901 N Flood Ave to create a modern space with natural light and thoughtful design. The interior was rebuilt to support state-ofthe-art technology and flexible gathering spaces.

Allen said the new location expands what Primrose can offer the community. The Chapel at Primrose accommodates large services with ease, including overflow options, while The Venue at Primrose offers a versatile event center that can host memorial receptions as well as weddings, corporate events and community gatherings. Today, Primrose is now more than a funeral home. It is a place for connection, remembrance and celebration in all forms.

While the new building represents growth, the heart of Primrose remains unchanged, according to Allen. With the same caring staff, families can expect the same compassion that has defined Primrose for generations, delivered in a space designed for the present and the future.

While some are fascinated by this technology, others feel some apprehension, be it potential impacts to jobs or privacy violations, security threats or malicious uses.

Moore Norman offers a programming and artificial intelligence program for adults and high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing careers in technology. In the program, students learn to write Python code and apply it to solve real-world problems using artificial intelligence, while also learning more about the AI field and data science.

She has even benefited from the technology’s efficiency in her own work, such as through email filters or using ChatGPT as a way to brainstorm ideas for social media and marketing efforts.

Waddle said she’s also heard concerns that people have about AI, such as whether the technology will result in job losses as companies find more functions for the technology.

But each generation has seen jobs change and emerge as a result of technology, from the Industrial Revolution to the creation of websites to help promote companies, she said.

As AI is used more, “I think what we will see is a pivot or a change in restructuring of what some of our modern jobs look like,” Waddle said.

As more AI advancements materialize, Waddle encourages individuals to learn more about the technology.

“I think it’s totally OK and healthy to be cautious about technology,” she said. “With any new technology, there will be pros and cons.”

“Awareness is so important,” Waddle said, adding, “It definitely takes some awareness, some time and patience and openness to learn more about it.”

NEW YEAR, NEW MONEY HABITS: HOW TO STICK WITH IT IN 2026

I

f you’re like most people, you likely start each year with a list of resolutions to help you improve various aspects of your life. The list may include resolutions to help you become more physically fit, further your career growth and improve your personal relationships. Another category of resolutions you may make centers on those that affect your finances.

If the latter is true, there’s probably a good chance that your list of resolutions for the new year looks the same, year after year … after year. Yes, it’s easy to come up with ways you can improve at year’s end, but seeing those resolutions through and actually making them happen is another story entirely.

Spend less, save more, pay down debt — how can you make 2026 the year you actually stick to these and other financial resolutions?

Below, we’ve compiled a list of tips that can help you keep your financial resolutions throughout the new year.

SET MEASURABLE GOALS Don’t just resolve to be better with money this year.

Set realistic, measurable goals to help you stay on track and to ensure you’re actually making progress.

For example, you can resolve to increase your spending by a certain amount by the time you hit the midyear point, decide to trim your spending in a specific category by a set percentage or promise to pay all your bills on time for the entire year.

PARTNER UP WITH A FRIEND According to MyFitnessPal.com, dieters who share their food diaries with a buddy lose twice as much weight. It’s basic psychology: When we know we have to answer to someone else, we’re more likely to stick to our resolutions — and this works for financial resolutions as well.

Choose a friend who is in a similar financial bracket as you are and has a comparable relationship with money. Also, it helps if they have similar resolve to set and stick to those financial resolutions together. Set up a weekly time to review progress (or regression) you each have made, and make sure you both come prepared with details and proof to show how you’ve handled your money.

Bonus tip: To make it even easier, you can use a money management app, like Mint, to help you track your spending, find your weak areas and stay accountable for your friend.

WRITE IT DOWN In an era where some people can go without touching a pen and paper for days, writing down New Year’s resolutions can seem obsolete, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen. The act of putting your financial resolutions into writing will help to imprint them on your memory. Plus, you’ll have a list of your resolutions to reference throughout the year to help keep you on track.

Bonus tip: Writing doesn’t need to be physical in order to count. You can use a resolution-tracking app, like Strides, where you can record, track and reference your New Year’s resolutions at any time with just a few quick clicks.

s weight loss medications and quick-fix programs flood social media feeds, many patients are left wondering which options are safe, effective and sustainable. At Norman Regional’s Metabolic Weight Loss clinic in Moore, Drs. Raghuveer and Krishna Vadala offer a tailored approach, one grounded in medical expertise, dedicated time with patients and a long-term view of health.

The brothers launched the clinic to treat obesity as a complex medical condition rather than a one-size-fits-all problem.

“We’re a metabolic weight loss clinic, but we practice it through a primary care lens,” said Dr. Raghuveer Vadala. “In traditional primary care visits, weight often gets lumped in with a dozen other concerns. There isn’t enough time to really address it as its own risk factor.”

Both physicians said their interest in obesity medicine grew from their work in primary care and their own personal experiences, motivating them to pursue additional training and a board certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

A FOUR-PILLAR APPROACH TO WEIGHT LOSS The clinic’s care model is built on four key pillars: nutrition, physical activity, behavioral changes and medical management.

“That’s where we can really individualize care and help patients understand how everything works together,” Dr. Raghuveer Vadala explained.

Medical management may include FDA-approved weight loss medications, including GLP-1 therapies such as Wegovy and Zepbound, when appropriate.

They also help patients navigate insurance coverage, a significant barrier for those seeking treatment.

SUPPORTING PATIENTS ACROSS LIFE STAGES The clinic treats adults 18 and older and, in some cases, adolescents as young as 12. For younger patients, Dr. Krishna Vadala said the focus centers on lifestyle changes and family involvement before medication is considered.

“We’re very intentional about involving families,” he said.

“We prioritize diet, exercise and behavioral habits first.

Medication is only considered for youth when there are serious health concerns, like early-onset type 2 diabetes.”

This family-centered approach reflects a broader goal of addressing obesity-related conditions early.

BY: LINDSAY CUOMO “Obesity is closely linked to conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and joint pain,” Dr. Krishna Vadala explained. “If someone is exercising and eating well but still not seeing results, or if they’re worried about chronic conditions, then it’s a good time to come talk to us.”

LONG-TERM SUPPORT FOR BARIATRIC PATIENTS The clinic also provides care for patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery. These individuals often require ongoing follow-up to monitor nutrition, prevent deficiencies and maintain weight loss.

“We see many patients who need someone to help oversee that next phase of care,” Dr. Raghuveer Vadala said. “Weight maintenance is just as important as weight loss.”

A FOCUS ON LONG-TERM RESULTS As the new year begins, the doctors see a familiar surge in motivation, often accompanied by unrealistic expectations.

“One thing I always tell patients is that weight loss isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon,” said Dr. Krishna Vadala. “The slower you lose it, the more likely you are to keep it off.”

That philosophy shapes the clinic’s emphasis on long-term habits rather than focusing solely on the number on the scale.

“We look at the whole picture,” Dr. Raghuveer Vadala explained. “Are patients moving better, eating well, sleeping, managing stress? When you make it a lifestyle, that’s when real change happens.”

rowing up as one of eight kids in a crowded house taught Meredith Wolfley more about teamwork than any classroom ever could.

Space was tight, noise was constant and privacy was basically nonexistent. But what the Wolfleys lacked in space, they made up for in connection.

“We learned to solve problems together and rely on each other no matter what,” Wolfley said. “Looking back, that kind of family life laid the groundwork for my career as a firefighter — another place where you live, work and depend on your crew like family.”

In her later twenties, Wolfley was on the search for a career that offered purpose, challenge and room to grow while still fitting the kind of life she loved living.

That search led her to the fire service. Wolfley says her parents deserve all the credit.

“They showed me what it meant to work hard, to stick together and to find joy in the chaos,” Wolfley said.

“They didn’t just raise kids; they built a team.”

Wolfley said sports helped shape that same drive for her. She played competitive basketball for years, and that’s where discipline really clicked for her.

“You can’t fake preparation — you either put in the work, or you don’t,” Wolfley said. “That mindset carried straight into firefighting. Whether it’s staying trained, physically ready or mentally sharp, no one’s there to push you every minute. You have to push yourself.”

Over time, Wolfley became the “go-to” person to her family and close friends; when something needed fixing or when a fast solution was the only option, they called her.

“I loved that pressure,” Wolfley said. “It’s funny how that carried over because firefighting is exactly that — thinking fast, solving problems with limited tools and doing it all as a team.”

What’s important to Wolfley as a firefighter is to value every call she goes on.

“I always think to myself, ‘It’s the places you go and the people you see,’” she said. “I want to remember them. I want to make a difference, even in small ways. People call us on their worst days, and I get to be part of the solution. I get to bring a little calm, a little kindness, maybe even a smile to someone who doesn’t have the strength to find one themselves.”

Wolfley said she’s so grateful the citizens of Norman trust the fire department to show up, to listen and to help. It’s an honor she doesn’t take lightly.

“There’s so much more to this job than the physical side — though that’s vital,” she said. “It’s also about the mental side: having empathy, being steady under pressure and recognizing that everyone on your crew brings something different to the table. Not everyone’s the strongest or the fastest or the most mechanically inclined, but everyone has strengths, and when you know how to use them together, that’s when the magic happens.”

There is something very special and unique about the fire service.

“It’s not just about answering calls,” Wolfley said. “It’s about being of service wherever you are — whether that’s helping at a wreck, assisting someone who’s broken down in the middle of traffic or just being a friendly presence in the community.

“This career has been everything I didn’t know I was looking for,” Wolfley continued. “Every call is different, every day is unpredictable, and that’s what I love about it. When someone dials 911, they’re often living one of the worst moments of their life. To be the person who shows up, offers calm in the chaos and brings hope — that’s something I never take for granted.”

Wolfley said the firehouse can often be just as loud as the home she grew up in, and it’s built on the same foundation — teamwork, hard work and heart.

“I couldn’t imagine a more rewarding and fulfilling job,” she said. “I’m thankful for what I have.” – BSM This is a continuation of our series on public servants in Norman.
