Just One Man’s Opinion So You Want to be a Tour Director?

For most of my adult life, one of my occasional job descriptions has been “Tour Director.” My friends and family probably think I spend my days laying on the beach, carousing the cocktail establishments well into the night, or whatever. Of course, they have no idea what the responsibilities might be. They are many, but the benefits are many also. And while about one day a year an itinerary does afford me an afternoon on a beach or by a pool; and I do attend the drag show in a nightclub in Key West once a year… those are truly exceptions. I get to go to a lot of great places, see a lot of wonderful things, travel with some pretty nice people.

It’s a great way to make a living, no doubt about it.

But once in a while, the job does have its moments. 24 hour moments. Allow me to explain. Our recent Rose Parade by Plane or Train is a good place to start. I was escorting the ten people flying down to Southern California. Chris Galloway was in charge of the 32 people who were traveling in the private Silver Lariat car on the back of the Coast Starlight, operated by Amtrak.

(That last phrase is the most important one in the paragraph… operated by Amtrak.)

I awoke at 3:45am to shower, shave and head to the airport. While still groggy, I open my ipad and pull up the Amtrak web site. Much to my dismay, I find that the train which was 20 minutes late in Oregon when I went to bed, is now 4 hours behind

schedule and still in Oregon. Good that I checked on the train before my shower, because as the overnight cobwebs cleared, I was formulating a plan.

At 5:05am, Chris arrives at my house. (We only take one car to the airport, saves on the high parking fees.) This is an important time to remember, because Chris’ work day is just beginning. It won’t end for 24 hours and 5 minutes. I inform Chris of the train delay and tell him I’ve decided, even though some people have already been picked up, to send them all back home and go back and pick everyone up 4 hours later. (The group is to travel to Oakland to “catch” the train. The private car is hooked to the Amtrak (there’s that word again) train to ride to Los Angeles.

I head to the airport, to meet and greet my ten folks. We fly to LA, go to the Farmer’s Market for a delightful guided tour, make a stop in Hollywood and finally end up at our hotel in Burbank at 3pm. All has gone well for the fly-away group.

The news is not as good for the train group. Four hours late becomes five, then six. The group makes its delayed departure from Sacramento about 10am. Chris and Greg take them on a short tour of Treasure Island to kill time and utilize restroom facilities. The 6 hour delay becomes 7. At roughly 4pm, the group boards the train. At 4:47, the train finally begins the trip to Los Angeles, 8 hours late.

Surely Chris went back home to sleep for those four hours before the restart, right?

Well, no. Chris went to the office to pick up supplies to stock the bus, knowing that if Amtrak didn’t make it for some reason, the group would be traveling to LA by SuperCoach and would need supplies.

That’s what you do as a Tour Director, you plan for possible scenarios and try to create options. Chris and Greg were doing just that. Meanwhile, Clayton and Kevin were checking out possible things for people to do in Oakland while waiting on the train, and possible meal stops if the bus has to travel all the way to LA. I speak to Chris and he says even though they aren’t making up time like our Amtrak friends (?) had planned, the train is moving in a forward direction. Meanwhile, the winds are howling in Burbank. Power goes out in part of the city twice, palm trees are down on I-5. I’m sitting there, about 9pm, thinking I’m about to hear from Chris at any moment, telling me they are stuck in Ventura with a tree across the tracks. But the call/text doesn’t come.

On the train, the folks have been wined and dined in style. Burt and his crew know how to take care of people, and our gang was pretty hungry, having had nothing but snacks all day. The beverages flow and soon the parade-goers are all dozing as the train makes its way to Southern California.

At 3:45am, my phone buzzes bedside.

(I’d love to tell you I was waiting up for them, but who are we kidding, I was sound asleep.) It’s Chris, telling me they are on the bus and heading for the hotel. I get up, hop in the shower for a minute to wash out the cobwebs (wait a minute, wasn’t that how this story started, in the shower) and head downstairs to meet the bedraggled travelers. We have double and triple checked the keys, and because of the late (early?) hour, folks are taking their own bags to their rooms. Fifteen minutes after the bus pulls into the hotel driveway, the last traveler heads to the elevator.

We are scheduled for a tour and lunch at the Reagan Library. We create a new schedule, Continued on page 6

Ralph Bunn is becoming a familiar name to many of you. Not only is he frequently out on tour, but he’s also our Blueberry Photographic Society Grand Prize winner for 2014. Ralph recently joined me on “A Tender Tennessee Christmas.” Following, he offered to make a souvenir disc for everyone including still photography set to music as well as selected video clips from the six concerts we attended. Ralph produced the presentation, copied the discs, even packed them for mailing. All he asked of me was the postage. I had the treat of watching the disc last night with one of our fellow travelers and it was brilliant! Ed. Note: Wow. $450. When Gateway Canyons (about an hour from Grand Junction, CO) opened a decade or so ago, we were able to get rooms, through a connection in the GJ Convention Bureau, for only about $150 a night. They are nice rooms and it’s a beautiful place, but I can’t imagine paying $450 a night. Guess we were wise to get there ahead of the crowds.

Did you know…

HOT OFF THE PRESS: As the paper goes through the rotary printing press friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off the press it is hot.

The expression means to get immediate information.

A SHOT OF WHISKEY: In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a “shot” of whiskey.

PASSING THE BUCK/THE BUCK STOPS HERE: Most men in the early west carried a jack knife made by the Buck Knife Company.

When playing poker it was common to place one of these Buck Knives in front of the dealer so that everyone knew who he was.

When it was time for a new dealer, the deck of cards and the knife were given to the new dealer. If this person didn’t want to deal he would “pass the buck” to the next player.

If that player accepted, then “the buck stopped there.”

RIFF RAFF: The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north to south.

Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts which were considered cheap.

The steering oar on the rafts was called a “riff” and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class.

COBWEB: The Old English word for “spider” was “cob.”

SHOWBOAT: These were floating theaters built on a barge that was pushed by a steamboat. These played small towns along the Mississippi River. Unlike the boat shown in the movie “Showboat” these did not have an engine. They were gaudy and attention

grabbing which is why we say someone who is being the life of the party is “showboating.”

CURFEW: The word “curfew” comes from the French phrase “couvre-feu,” which means “cover the fire.” It was used to describe the time of blowing out all lamps and candles.

It was later adopted into Middle English as “curfeu,” which later became the modern “curfew.” In the early American colonies homes had no real fireplaces so a fire was built in the center of the room. In order to make sure a fire did not get out of control during the night it was required that, by an

agreed upon time, all fires would be covered with a clay pot called a “curfew.”

HOGWASH: Steamboats carried both people and animals. Since pigs smelled so bad they would be washed before being put on board. The mud and other filth that was washed off was considered useless “hog wash.”

BARGE IN: Heavy freight was moved along the Mississippi in large barges pushed by steamboats. These were hard to control and would sometimes swing into piers or other boats. People would say they “barged in.”

(When the bus loads at 9am, my ten people who flew are joined by 7 folks who just straggled in a few hours ago, and they head to the Reagan Library congratulations to the hardy 7.)

Finally, the day/night is over. The light of day is just starting to peak over the mountains when Chris and I fall into our beds. I look at the clock. It’s 5:10am.

Couple of things worth a mention. Kudos to our travelers on the train. When they came into the hotel, no one said a cross word.

Some even smiled and said thank you. What a class act the entire group was. And then there was the Tour Director. From the comments directed to me, sounded like they thought their leader had held the day together. With a little help from his friends, Chris had completed a 24-hour shift as Tour Director. One final comment. If you are ever on a schedule to get somewhere, don’t call Amtrak. Train travel is timeless, I’ve heard people say. Now I know what that means. It means you don’t know when you are leaving or when you will get there. Timeless. And so it goes…

Changes Announced for the Gold Passport Program

The last few months have been a chaotic whirlwind for Merrill Mixer and her husband Steve. They have been selling and giving away possessions, storing keepsakes, and packing their bags for an exciting new adventure! They have wanted to live a simpler life abroad so they decided to take the big step and do it now rather than later. Merrill’s husband has served as a pastor, and changes at his church opened a window and they decided to move up their retirement plans a bit.

Merrill says, “We didn’t want to look back and have regrets.” They hope to travel slowly – renting apartments and living as locals instead of as tourists, to experience big city living and village life, picturesque mountain towns, tranquil countryside and coastal beach communities. There is only a loose framework of an itinerary – very hard for a Tour Planner!

In February they head for South America to explore Ecuador and Colombia for 15 weeks before they take an Alaskan cruise with family. Our frequent Traveler program, designated as Gold Passport, will have some changes coming June 1, 2015. All Gold Members with Gold Passport balances will receive a detailed notice of the changes in February.

The program is now over 20 years old. No changes have ever been made to the award chart, despite the fact it is now 50% easier to get to the big prize on the award chart. For the program to be financially viable, some changes must be made. We are notifying you now to give you a chance to use your points at the old levels. These changes will only impact awards at the 40,000 point level or higher. Awards below that amount will be unchanged.

The reason for the changes are somewhat mathematical. Actually, changes should have been made every 5 years or so, to adjust for inflation. This is because our program offers a “balloon” award at the top level. The new top level will be 70,000 points. There will be new awards at 50,000 and 60,000 points. The award at 40,000 will increase slightly with the new chart and the 50,000 point award will decrease. The top award will be $3,000 as opposed to the old $2,500.

Gold Passport Members will receive a detailed chart of the new awards, along with an updated account statement of your points, in mid-February.

A Note About Last Minute Changes in Home Pickups We need your help with something. Pickup schedules for trips offering door-to-door service are prepared approximately two weeks prior to departure. This is a very time consuming process, figuring out who goes in which car, what size car goes on which route, timing between stops, etc. It is a mammoth job each and every time.

Here’s the challenge we need your help with: When you call us within two weeks of departure and say, “Oh, by the way, my traveling partner wants to be picked up at my house.” Or, “I didn’t tell you this when we registered, but we live in two different addresses and my traveling partner needs to be picked up in Elk Grove and I live in Roseville.”

Changing one person can set off a chain reaction that causes the entire group to have to be re-dispatched. You can help us by calling the office at least two weeks prior to departure with any changes in home pickup locations.

In fact, this itinerary does not provide more than a glimpse of that magnificent city, and instead shows you the rest of the island. Fly to Vancouver and catch the ferry to Nanaimo. After an overnight, head for the west coast of the island and the town of Tofino.

The paved road has only gone to Tofino for 40 years, so it’s an unspoiled region. Stay 2 nights at the Tin Wis Resort. Visit old growth forests, beautiful gardens and visit a local tea room.
