The start of the 2021-2022 school year presented a few challenges, but as expected, Texas high school coaches found a way to maneuver around the obstacles and provide a great start to our UIL competition season.

Football, volleyball, team tennis and cross country are in the middle of their district schedules as certification is less than a month away. The next month of competitions will decide post-season births, home field advantage for playoff games and gold ball winners. In addition, boys and girls basketball teams begin practice in a few weeks as they prepare for the start of their season. Over the next month, dreams will become reality and there is nothing like high school sports in Texas!

To all the teams, coaches, fans and schools that participated in “Our Day to Shine” ….THANK YOU! If you have not participated in the “Our Day to Shine” benefit program, I want to encourage you to do so with your upcoming scrimmages. Money raised for this cause goes to our coaches and players that experience hardship cases during the year.

THSCA Academic All-State teams will be recognized throughout the year. Coaches should check the THSCA calendar for the nomination deadline in their respective sport.

Volleyball and cross country nominees should be submitted by November 1. Don’t miss an opportunity to bring positive recognition to your athletes and your program.

Additionally, please consider nominating one of your talented young coaches for the R.O.C.K. Coaches Mentoring Program class of 2022. Nominations are now being accepted online in the THSCA member portal for coaches in their 1-5 year of coaching.

The deadline to nominate is December 1, and you can find more details about the nomination process on page 29 of this issue. This program provides vital support to our younger generation of coaches, and we need to seize every opportunity to foster their development and keep them in this great profession!

Best of Luck to everyone as we continue the fall sports season. Continue to lead by example and provide the guidance your players, coaches and communities deserve.

Obituary

COACH CLYDE RAY ALEXANDER

Coach Clyde Ray Alexander was born July 9,1936 in McKinney, Texas to Winnona Fay (Proffitt) and Hubert Lee Alexander. He passed from this life August 11, 2021.

Clyde graduated from McKinney HS where he played football, in 1955. After graduation, Clyde spent a year at Tulsa where he played center for the football team. In 1958, he married his after high school sweetheart Sandra Miller. He served in the army from October of 1958 until September of 1960, some of that time in Germany. After coming back to Texas, Clyde would finish college at North Texas State Univ. with a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1962. He then started his career in the job he would love for over 40 years.

Clyde started teaching and coaching in the fall of 1962 at McKinney JH. During the summer of 1963 and 1966 he would achieve his Masters degree from North Texas. In 1963 he moved to Rockwall HS where he would join lifelong friend Jim Hess in coaching a team that would win the AA State Championship that year. He served as Rockwall’s Head football coach from 1965 to 1967. Next, Clyde would find himself coaching linebackers for the Highland Park Scots until 1969. Baytown Sterling was the next stop where he would join Hess again, as defensive coordinator from 1970 to 1972 as well as 1977 to 1979. Between those trips in the fall of 1972, he opened Clear Lake High as its first Head Football Coach.

As his children were becoming older, in 1979, Clyde made the jump to the college ranks with a job at Howard Payne Univ., from where his daughter Vicki would graduate. At Howard Payne, he served as defensive coordinator. In 1982, he would move to Stephen F. Austin State Univ., where he coached, with Hess again, not only linebackers in football, but also golf. While at SFA the football team would be a co-champion of the Gulf Star conference in 1985. In the spring of that year he coached he NCAA Division II runner-up National Golf Champion. Clyde won golf coach of the year honors from the Gulf Star Conference and the NCAA district coach of the year and co-National coach of the year in Division II. He was inducted into the Hall of Honor for Golf at SFA in 2006. His son Greg would graduate from SFA in 1986. Clyde, then spent a year at Round Rock Westwood from 1989 to 1990. In January of 1990, Clyde went to New Mexico State Univ. where he spent 7 years as defensive coordinator with Jim Hess once more. He came back to Texas to coach at Klein Oak HS in 1997 where he spent one season then moved to Klein Forest HS where he would again coach football but finish his career teaching health and coaching golf. He would retire from coaching in May of 2011.

He is preceded in death by his parents Fay and Hubert Alexander of McKinney, sister Lonita Raines of Branson, Missouri, his son Kenny Marc and his daughter Lonelda Godejohn. He is survived by his wife Sandra and daughter Vicki of Katy, son Greg of Montgomery, son-in-law Kevin Godejohn of Cleveland, Texas, grand children Austin, Hunter and Garrett Alexander of Spring and Cory and Cayla Godejohn of Cleveland, sister-in-law Nelda McCroskey of Allen and nephews Jeff, Scott and Kyle McCroskey and Gary Ray and Billy Don Barnes.

A memorial service for Clyde Alexander will be held on Saturday November 13, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. Rest Haven Funeral Home 2500 State Hwy. 66 East Rockwall, Tx. 75087. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be made in Clyde’s memory to Texas High School Coaches Association Education Foundation. COACH J.G. CARTWRIGHT

Obituary

J.G. Cartwright, the retired Boyd HS Football Coach for 35 years, passed away on August 26, 2021 at the age of 76. J.G. was born September 22, 1944 to Vid and Virginia (Harp) Cartwright in Godley, Texas.

He was united in marriage June of 1994 to Jan Gray in Grapevine, Texas. J.G. graduated from North Texas Univ. with a bachelor’s Degree. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, coach, and friend to many who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vid and Virginia Cartwright; his wife, Jan Cartwright; and sister, Jenny Sue Robinson.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his daughter, Christy Cartwright of Roanoke; his 3 sons, Robby Cartwright and wife Sara of Decatur, Chris Kinnaird and wife Laura of Denton and their children, Scott Kinnaird and wife Jamie of Omaha, Nebraska and their children; 5 grandchildren, Hayley Myers, Alex Raasch, Colby Raasch, Jett and Cale Cartwright; his brother, Jan Cartwright and wife Dottie of Austin; numerous extended family members and a host of friends.

COACH RICHARD DALE EDDLEMAN

Richard Dale Eddleman, age 86, of Amarillo, Texas passed on November 1, 2020, surrounded by his family.

Richard was born August 20, 1934, to Bruce and Helen Eddleman in Turkey, Texas. He graduated from Quitaque HS and received his Bachelor’s degree from West Texas State Univ. and his Master’s degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State Univ. Richard married his wife, Gay Lynn Callaway of 59 years on May 26, 1961. He was a teacher and coach for 31 years and influenced many lives over that period of time. Coach Eddleman relished and cherished acts of kindness and associations in later life with former players and students. Richard began his teaching career in Idalou, Texas in 1961. He also taught and coached at Abernathy, Lockney, Groom, Horace Mann JH, Caprock HS, Canyon HS, and finished his career at Randall HS. He served in the Marine Corps for three years. Richard was a faithful servant of the Lord who worshipped and served as an Elder for many years at Anna Street Church of Christ. He was a member of Gideons International and would hand out Bible’s to students at local high schools. It was common place that someone would recognize him regardless of where he went and he reveled in talking with each of them. One of his pleasures for decades was spending time sharing a cup of coffee with “the coffee crew”.

COACH KEVIN OBED HERNANDEZ

Obituary

Kevin Obed Hernandez was born in San Antonio, TX to Cesar Hugo Hernandez and Edilia Esperanza Godoy on July 19th of 1992. Kevin was raised in a Christian household and taught great values. He was baptized and growing he regularly attended Maranatha Church in San Antonio. Since he was little he liked to sing praises around the house with his guitar. His other passion he found in the game of football. He loved, lived and breathed the game; playing throughout grade, middle and his high school years. After graduating from Roosevelt HS in 2010, he began his studies in kinesiology and continued playing football at Ripon College in Wisconsin. Furthermore, after hanging up his cleats he continued his path in educating and received a Bachelors from Texas A&M San Antonio in 2018, then earned his Master’s Degree in Special Education from The Univ. of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2020.

He was a long time member of Extreme Youth Leadership then worked for nearly 4 years at Reagan HS as a Special Education teacher, PALS sponsor, and assistant football coach. Like coach would say "The only thing bigger then Kevin is his Heart" Kevin’s family and friends were especially important to him just as his students, athletes and coworkers throughout his career. He always took care of their needs before his own. His love, care, and generosity towards others truly defined his life.

COACH ANTHONY RUIZ

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that our beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend Anthony L. Ruiz entered eternal rest on September 14, 2021 at the age of 40. Anthony was born in San Antonio, Texas to Richard Ruiz and Caroline (Martinez) Tovarez.

Anthony had a passion for football. He was a graduate from McCollum HS in 1999 where he found the love for the game on the field. He then graduated from Palo Alto College receiving his Associate Degree.

Anthony completed all three levels of certifications through National Standards for Athletic Coaches. In 2015, he graduated from Texas A&M Univ. where he earned his teaching degree. He volunteered his time coaching Pop Warner football for the South Central Cougars and Wolverines for many years. Anthony also volunteered his time coaching the San Antonio RUSH and the San Antonio Warriors Semi-pro football. He was loved by his Warrior family. He walked along the sideline with head coach Glen White. His experience with the Warriors was very special to him. He taught and coached at several schools including St. Mary’s Hall, Kingsborough MS, Lamar MS, Brooks Academy, Temple, and Runge HS. The Runge Community have taken in Anthony as a true Yellow Jacket. Anthony was a very humble, dependable, kind-hearted, playful spirit, and family oriented person.

He had his own way of keeping in touch with everyone by sending his random messages to make you laugh. He made a difference in many people’s lives. He is going to be missed and loved by everyone who knew him.

COACH EDWARD "EDDIE" WOLSKI JR.

Edward Leo “Eddie” Wolski Jr., age 75, of Round Rock, passed away on September 3, 2021. Eddie was born on October 21, 1945, in Big Spring, TX to parents, Edward Leo Wolski and Lettress Montez LovvornOwens. He was raised by Lillie Odessa and Charles Wilson Lovvorn in Coahoma, TX. Eddie graduated from Coahoma HS in 1965, and it was during this time in high school, where he exceled as an all-district offensive and defensive tackle, that he realized his love of football and coaching that he would carry with him his entire life. It’s also during this time that he met his mentor and lifelong friend Spike Dykes, who helped him early in his career get his first coaching job. After graduation, Eddie went on to Angelo State Univ. where he played football until a shoulder injury ended his playing career.

His passion for learning was always present and he went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from Sul Ross Univ. in 1986.

It was also during his time at Angelo State that he met and married the love of his life, Diala. They met in 1966 and married in August 1967 at First Baptist Church in Andrews, TX. Eddie and Diala’s early life together was an adventure, as he was the head coach at Shallowater from 1974 to 1978 after assistant jobs at Alice, Mexia and Odessa Permian. Wolski then went to Midland Lee where he was an assistant football and head track and cross-country coach from 1978-1988. He helped coach a Lee team that advanced to the 1983 state championship game and also coached in the 1989 THSCA All-Star Game. During this time, he also served on the THSCA Track Advisory Committee and THSCA Board of Directors. He later served as the Asst. Executive Vice President for the THSCA for 15 years. His many duties included supervising the exhibition hall and the THSCA All-Star camp at the association’s annual coaching school; He finished the last 15 years of his career with the U.I.L. first as a Waiver Officer, and for the past few years as special assistant to Dr. Charles Breithaupt. Eddie received many honors and awards during his long career - Texas High School Football Hall of Fame (2004); City of Houston Proclamation – Eddie Wolski Day (July 25, 2004); City of Palms Football Hall of Honor (2005); Midland ISD Hall of Legends (2017); Angelo State Golden Ex of the Year (2020).

Eddie was preceded in death by his very special grandparents, Lillie Odessa and Charles Wilson Lovvorn, as well as Edward Leo Wolski and Lettress Montez Lovvorn-Owens. He is survived by his loving and supportive wife of 54 years, Diala Wolski, and their 3 children, Steffeny (Tim), Trey, and Brad (Krystal), and their 7 grandchildren, Courtney, Austin and Hayden Montpas, TJ and Jon Wolski, and Parker and Gage Wolski; siblings Sharon Box, Barbara Clarke and Jeff Owens; and many other loving nieces and nephews.

Eddie was very proud of his family and always loved giving anyone an update on his kids and grandkids. Eddie impacted the lives of everyone he met, and he never met a stranger. He was an incredibly generous person who helped loved ones and strangers alike. Countless young men and women he coached and met along the way looked to him for wisdom and guidance, and he was always there to lend an ear and provide comfort and help. For someone to love others as he did, to be as kind and giving as he was, they had to be blessed with the Spirit of Christ. During his entire life, Eddie was a Christian who loved God. As Jesus commanded, “love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12). That’s how Eddie Wolski lived his life.

National High School Academic Excellence Award The THSCA has partnered with The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Football Hall of Fame and state High School Associations from all states for the creation of the NFF National High School Academic Excellence Award. This award will be the first nationwide recognition honoring individual high school football teams for excellence in the classroom. Football coaches, you should be receiving an email in mid-October outlining the protocols for nomination. Nominations will be submitted directly to THSCA beginning in November.

They all appreciate it, deserve it, and need it! District play has begun, and playoffs are on the way. The hours being put in are countless! Be there. Be strong. You are keeping it all together! Just remember to take time for you and your coach! Remember, it’s quality not quantity that matters now. I also want to remind you that in order to take care of everyone and ALL THE THINGS, you must take care of yourself too!

ACING SPECIAL TEAMS

have can contribute to the success of their team but often are unwilling to place the better athletes on those teams. Maybe it is the fear that they could get injured or simply that they wish to get more kids involved in the program. I faced a similar

situation when I was placed in charge of all special teams. I had worked with various aspects of these units for some thirty years but had never had the final say-so as to alignments, personnel, and areas of concentration. Immediately, I realized there would be limited practice time for such units. Another

dilemma-for better or worse- was working for a head coach that believed that these were the units that could be successful by allowing players that were backups to get on the field. Though there was nothing wrong with this way of thinking, I was immediately faced with two questions. The first was how you get the most out of players that may not be as talented as the starters.

Second was what motivations could be used to make these teams more attractive.

The answer came in a “blast from the past.” Drawing from my history background, I remembered several lessons dealing with WWI. The thing that struck me about that war was the bravery, cunning, and resourcefulness of those that were in airplanes. Many of the planes they flew were sometimes pieced together with bailing wire. The men on both sides were considered very “special” in that they were facing many situations that were fluid and changing with each specific mission.

Of all those “fearless young men in their flying machines,” the “Ace” was the pilot that stood out. They not only exhibited extreme bravery but also cunning and resourcefulness. This example led me to start thinking about the correlation between those young flyers and football team members of today.

The goal became to create a recognition program for the special team players that would be unique for them. The key would be to incorporate “kills.” To be politically correct, one must realize that “kills” referred not how many of the enemy that they could send to their demise but rather how many planes they took out of action. Matter of fact, a code of honor demanded that pilots were not to be attacked after leaving their damaged aircraft.

Relating it to football then would be in the form of ending the play (tackles, great runs, great blocks, etc.) or creating situations deemed as an outstanding performance (recovering a fumble, return for a TD or long run, or even throwing the block to spring that great return). Just like the WWI pilot, a player could become an “Ace” by accumulating enough such feats to distinguish himself from the pack during a season.

In creating such a program, three questions had to be answered. First was how many kills would constitute an Ace. Second was to define a “kill” specific to each area of kicking.

Third would be what recognition would be awarded to the individual player for his noted achievement.

The answer to the first question was 13. If a player could accumulate 13 or more kills in a season, he would be designated as an Ace for that year. The number 13 was an arbitrary number on my part that would require a player to have more than one kill in at least three games during the season while having at least one in each of the other games.

In today’s high scoring games, the number could be increased. At the time, it was not a number that was impossible to attain but harder than one would think. In our first season with the system, we had one player to achieve the designation of an Ace. He actually had 19 kills but no other player reached the lucky number of 13. We had three players that tied for second with nine but none were aces because they failed to reach the plateau number. The second year we had two players reach the magic 13 (one with 17 and one with 15). Kills were not cumulative, so everyone started at zero each new season. Playoffs were simply a continuation of a particular season.

Since we didn’t have planes to place decals on to keep track of numbers, I created a poster located in the locker room that all could see but high enough that no one could get to without a step ladder.

On that poster, I kept a week to week running total. It became interesting that players (even those not involved in the units) started looking at that poster at the start of each week to see the results. As players got closer to that special number, the excitement in the entire locker room began to grow. What surprised me was that word spread around campus. It was not unusual to be quizzed by students not in the program as to the standings.

It was my sole responsibility to keep the charts and posters for each game which eliminated any questions as to what plays would count as kills. Tackles had to be first contact to stop the return man and not those that piled on at the end or hit the ball carrier who continued to run. Returns had to be over 20 yards for punt returns and over 30 yards for kickoff returns. Punters had to average over 35-plus yards while kickers had to convert all extra

points plus successfully make at least one field goal during the game.

Exceptional blocks had to prevent a sure tackle from occurring plus result in a return of at least 15 yards past the point of block. Fumble recoveries spoke for themselves.

Any penalties that negated the play would also negate the results that would be charted. I became proficient enough to have charts completed before leaving the field house after the game. That does not mean that I would have to consult video to finalize my list. I would confirm my charts prior to posting.

The third and final part of the program was to devise some type of recognition different from the helmet decals that we presented to the team for each week’s games. It needed to be something that could stand out, be identifiable. Also, the award needed to be visible throughout the season. After all, becoming an “Ace” was a pretty special thing. T-shirts seemed the most logical choice.

They would be seen during the season at meetings, during weight workouts, and on the field during

started up, we did a survey of former Aces and their thoughts about the program when they received the honor. What we found was very interesting from the aspect of how they looked at it. The t-shirts meant so little in the scheme of things.

The recognition and awards wound up being secondary to a majority of the Aces. What was pivotal to the program and its success was that the athletes gained something down deep. They — to a player — agreed that it was what they felt inside that was the most important.

They were “special” and that made all the difference much like those daring fighter pilots of olden days. walkthroughs. The design was originally simple with a large block A over our mascot encircled by the school name. This later evolved to a winged scripted upper-case ACE over the mascot with the school’s name above the letter and a descriptive “award for special teams” below. Luckily, the head coach liked the idea and was willing to fund the venture though as you can tell the expense was minimal.

The tee shirts would be retired at the end of the season as this would keep them unique to football. It made its presentation during the season that more important. It was amazing as the program matured how special those tee shirts became. We began by year two to have many starters “volunteer” to be on special teams (that was however between them and the head coach).

After the conclusion of the first season, three final decisions were made to keep the program special.

Number one was that each season was final and would not carry over to the next (everyone would start

at zero each season). Second was that playoffs were simply an extension of the season and would apply to that year only. Third was to keep a history by creating an awards board that listed the year, player’s name, and number of kills the Ace had accumulated that year (an Ace could be listed more than once if they accomplished the feat in more than one season). This would be an end of season posting to ensure all the numbers were correct. They could be announced at an end of season banquet for the team, family, and fans.

NOTE: One of the questions that came up most often over the years was whether we ever considered expanding the program to include other units on the football team.

We discussed possibly developing “squadrons” for each group with their own set of criteria for their awards. We decided that we would not pursue these avenues because in the end it would have watered down or even destroyed what the intent of creating the program in the first place. That intent was to make the special teams “special.”

The Ace program made a huge impact on the program. Our special teams became some of the best in our district in all aspects. Year in and year out, it became an honor to be on our special teams. Players wanted to be on those teams. It even made specialty time during practice go faster and more efficient as the players on those teams wanted to keep their place on them.

I NEVER TRULY UNDERSTOOD THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ASSOCIATION AND COACHING SCHOOL. WHEN I FIRST STARTED, I THOUGHT COACHING SCHOOL WAS JUST A WAY TO START THE FOOTBALL SEASON AND LEARN A FEW THINGS AND SOCIALIZE. I NOW UNDERSTAND THAT THE ASSOCIATION IS MUCH MORE THAN COACHING SCHOOL AND MUCH GREATER THAN FOOTBALL. IT'S OUR REPRESENTATION, AND THE THINGS THE ASSOCIATION HANDLES AND REPRESENTS OUR PROFESSION ON SO MANY LEVELS IS UNREAL. The R.O.C.K. (Rare, Outstanding, Compelled & Knowledgeable) Mentoring Program is a partnership formed between the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation and Texas A&M University Coaching Academy, which was created to meet the needs of, and retain high school coaches and administrators in the state of Texas. Our research shows that nearly 20 percent of coaches leave the profession each year and many of those are young, first through fifth year coaches. Many of those coaches getting into the profession now are choosing the alternative certification route and are never able to participate in a student teaching component. Instead, they enter a probationary year of employment with a school district and find themselves drowning.

There is a critical need to cultivate and assist our young coaches to find their passion and be prepared as coaches, teachers, and leaders in an ever-evolving environment. We felt, as an association, if we did not do something to address this epidemic it would be a disservice to the future of this amazing profession!

We are now accepting nominations for the R.O.C.K. mentoring program class of 2022! To nominate a mentee for the incoming class, please complete the nomination form in the THSCA Member Portal Online.You will need to login and then locate "Browse Open Competitions" under the Awards tab. 2. Click on the Membership tab, and see THSCA is blue under My Membership. Click on the blue THSCA letters.

3. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and locate the option to "Download My Membership Card" under Membership Tasks.

LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATION & ADVOCACY Texas Legislature: Members of the THSCA are represented by a strong State leadership organization, which monitors current legislation and protects the coaching profession's best interest, and strives for the highest possible professional standards, as outlined by our Bylaws, Policies and Code of Ethics.

THSCA Political Action Committee (PAC): The purpose of the PAC is to support the Texas high school coaching profession and public-school athletics in Texas, as well as supporting public education as an institution.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Annual Coaching School and Convention: The three-day annual conference offers cutting-edge educational sessions and multiple networking events and exhibits and provides opportunities for members to benefit from a variety of rules meetings 33

and outstanding speakers. It provides new contacts, a line of communication and a forum for the exchange of ideas and information within your profession for a minimal tuition fee. This convention also includes several courses offered to coaches for U.I.L. Mandatory Coaches Certification Program (CCP) credit.

Professional Development Lecture Series: The aim of this program is to keep our coaches abreast of up-to-date information on key and essential topical matters relating to the health, safety and social issues affecting our student athletes today.

Starting the Conversation: Online curriculum materials that include videos, conversation starters, role-playing scenarios and personal reflections that help coaches address the growing problem of relationship violence. Designed to help coaches create a positive team culture so that aggressive, abusive attitudes and behaviors in relationships do not occur.

The Texas Coaches Leadership Summit: The purpose of this leadership summit is to equip coaches and their staffs with tools necessary to enhance and encourage the lives of their players, especially those who come from fatherless or absent father homes. To help coaches understand the importance of “coaching beyond the game.”

THSCA Head Coaching Academy: This workshop is built on our passion to help train the next generation of head coaches. Designed for head coaches who want to brand their program and hone their administrative skills, as well as younger coaches seeking the skills and mentoring it takes to become a head coach in the future. ​ Texas Coach Magazine Subscription: Members receive 9 issues of TEXAS COACH, the primary publication of the THSCA, containing articles on the skills and techniques of the various sports as well

as articles on current topics of interest relating to the safety and well-being of our student athletes.

THSCA Weekly E-News: This weekly email service keeps coaches in the loop on headline news stories from across the state, and provides up-to-date information on THSCA events, programs and services.

FREE Recruiting Webinar: Online webinar resource for coaching staffs, counselors and parents which covers topics related to: Scholarship Myths and Facts, NCAA and NAIA Eligibility, NCAA Core Course Requirements, National Letter of Intent, Finding the Right School and Much More!

4-L Character Curriculum: Access to video testimony’s and lessons created in partnership with Stephen Mackey of 2Words Character Development and the THSCA I.D.E.A. (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Awareness) Committee. This curriculum was developed as the THSCA’s way to help coaches address issues with their team relating to social unrest, racial injustice and equitable treatment of others.

ATAVUS Tackle Training: THSCA annually provides in-person opportunities for coaches to complete the UIL Mandated Tackle Certification program provided by ATAVUS. These opportunities range from regional F.A.S.T. Clinics to Coaching School in-person training each year.

VOTING, AWARDS & RECOGNITION PROFESSIONAL Members (coaches of Texas secondary schools and athletic directors in the public school system of the UIL who are actively coaching) are eligible to vote in all Association elections, and nominate coaches for Hall of Honor, Board of Directors, Athletic Advisory Committees and other awards.

Academic All-State Teams: Eligibility of senior athletes to be nominated for Academic All-State teams, provided the head coach** of sport is a member of the THSCA as of October 15th, each year. THSCA Academic All-State Teams are published in Texas Coach and are posted on the THSCA website.

State Championship Ring: Head Coaches** of UIL sports who are members in good standing as of October 15th are eligible to receive a THSCA State Championship Ring from the Balfour Company.

ONLINE SERVICES THSCA members have unlimited access to the Association's World Wide Web site (www.thsca. com) which includes: Texas Coach Network: Online Career Center for THSCA Members Only, with services for candidates seeking a coaching job and employers looking to hire a coach.

Eligible coaches are recognized each year at the Balfour Hall of Honor Banquet and presented with their rings. This includes state champions in both boys and girls sports.

25-Year Plaques: Those members who have completed 25 years of membership in the THSCA are honored with a commemorative plaque for their loyalty.

Hall of Honor: Honors members and past members of the Association for outstanding leadership and service to the coaching profession and their contributions to the THSCA. Victory Plaques & Certificates: Given to member coaches in all sports who have reached the required number of wins for that sport.

The ROCK Coaches Mentoring Program: Program to provide novice coaches with a structured program where they can share knowledge and receive advice and emotional support from veteran coaches, which in turn will strengthen our profession.

Scholarships: Eligibility of your senior son or daughter to receive one of the ten $2,000 scholarships, one $2,500 scholarship (Eddie Joseph Memorial Scholarship) or one $2,005 (Fisher Woodchick Scholarship), being offered by the THSCA, provided you are a current PROFESSIONAL member. ** The THSCA interprets "head coach" to mean the coach who is responsible for the team and is actually responsible for substituting during competition of any of the UIL sanctioned school sports. (i.e., varsity, junior varsity, sophomore teams, freshman teams, 7th & 8th grade teams.) This includes allegations of criminal and/or sexual misconduct and employment related actions against an educator involving dismissal, revocation of certification and other professional rights and duties.

• In actions involving termination, salary, reassignment, certification or resignation, the matter in dispute must be resolved in favor of the member to qualify for the full reimbursement of $10,000. However, $2,000 of this amount is available for initial consultation and research, whether or not the member prevails, to determine if there exists a reasonable chance of the case being resolved in the member’s favor.

WHAT THE POLICY PAYS:

The Texas High School Coaches Association offers a Coaches Professional Liability Insurance option to eligible members with coverage beginning July 1, 2021. The THSCA has chosen the John A. Barclay Agency, Inc. to provide this coverage to our members. This plan was devised to offer liability insurance and legal assistance to THSCA members. In order to be eligible for this coverage you must meet the following criteria: • You must be a Coach, Athletic Trainer or Athletic Director, including classroom duties, for an accredited secondary school, college, junior college or university, within the state of Texas.

• Your THSCA Membership must be current for the school year in which the coverage is effective – 7/1/21 - 6/30/22.

• PROFESSIONAL, AFFLIATE and LIFE members are eligible only if they meet the criteria above. This insurance is not available to STUDENT or RETIRED members.

If you choose to purchase this insurance coverage and do not meet the criteria for eligibility, this coverage will not be valid. This coverage will be in effect July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. (New Insurance Purchase); September 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 (Renewal Insurance Purchase). Insurance purchased after July 1, 2021 will commence on the payment received date. SUNDOWN POWERLIFTING PROCESS, FAMILY AND COMPETE

T

he sport of powerlifting has grown tremendously in high schools across Texas the past 20 plus years with over 600 high schools competing annually. Powerlifting has opened many doors for me professionally as I have served as a Regional Director for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) for 16 years and was honored to serve as President for two years. Being a part of this association has allowed me to witness first-hand the growth of the sport and to see the benefits that powerlifting can have on kids and an overall athletic program. As with all sports, there are challenges when trying to build and maintain an elite program. Here at Sundown, we have worked extremely hard to build a powerlifting program and tradition that our school, community, and kids would

be proud of for years to come. We were blessed to reach the pinnacle of any sport this past season by claiming the school's first ever Powerlifting STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! There are so many factors that go into building and maintaining a program regardless of the sport. Obviously, the weight room and physical development of kids is a huge priority in powerlifting just by the nature of the sport itself. What I would like to share is the culture we have established in our powerlifting program, as well as how we work to develop our young people. We stress three key components to our kids each and every day: Process, Family and Compete.

PROCESS

- Actions that must be followed to achieve the desired results!!

Our focus is not always on the result, but more on all the daily details that we have to do each and every day to eventually reach that desired outcome. Our athletes work hard EVERYDAY in the weight room.

There are a million ways to program workouts and go about how to make kids stronger. Our focus is to keep it very simple in the weight room and focus on a few things so our kids become masters of the technique required for each lift. I believe technique is more important than the amount of weight on the bar. Once kids understand the importance of this, they will get stronger and see their totals at meets improve. Another key aspect of the total process is to take care of your body. Sleep, proper hydration, and good nutrition are emphasized daily. Our kids take ice baths usually 3-4 times a week as well as working on flexibility and using compression therapy as other means to help with recovery. Powerlifting is a demanding sport physically, make sure your body has what it needs to perform its best. These two components are the difficult parts of the process, because very few people ever see this part of it.

On meet day, you step on the platform nine times to compete, but the process that brought you to this point is the real benefit of the sport. It takes tremendous commitment to work hard in the weight room and work even harder to recover, but those are the actions required to follow the process.

FAMILY - A group of one or more who are working

for one common goal, loving and supporting one another even when it’s not easy to do!!

One of the most important aspects of our powerlifting culture is having a family atmosphere for our lifters.

I want our kids to embrace each other as teammates and embrace the grind of working and competing together. Adversity is a part of any sport but being there for each other and having each other’s back is the most important part of being a great teammate.

Not only do we want to support one another but we

also want to be unselfish for our team and help each other to be the best possible version of ourselves. Many of our kids compete against each other in the same weight class but we want to foster a family atmosphere that we can encourage and celebrate our success even if it sometimes is hard to beat your own teammate in a competition.

I encourage our kids to “coach” each other in the weight room and hold each other accountable at all times regarding technique and workouts. As a family, we also discuss tradition and leaving a legacy in powerlifting at Sundown High School.

Powerlifting creates some very unique bonds for kids working and competing together. I want our kids to know once you are a part of this program, you are forever a part of it. As with any family, we want to love each other and support each other no matter what circumstances come our way.

COMPETE - Working and striving daily in everything we do to better ourselves and those around us regardless of circumstances!!

The last component of our culture is without question the most important and that is competing. I want our kids to know how to compete in every aspect of life, as well as in powerlifting. Being under a bar, in a weight rack, forces you to compete because the weight is heavy. I tell our kids the weight does not

care about you and it will try to beat you every time if you allow it. Just like that weight, life can be heavy at times, and it will try and beat you as well. We teach our kids that even in the hardest times you just have to keep competing. In powerlifting, you must have great character, confidence, discipline and toughness to compete to win each and every rep. I push our kids to compete in workouts with each other and also with themselves. We talk about PR’s (personal records) all the time as kids set new maxes on squat, bench, or deadlift. When we reach a new PR, we set a new goal and I remind them of the process it took to achieve it.

At Sundown, we encourage and push our kids to compete in as many extracurricular activities as possible. We lifted 41 kids this year and every lifter was a multi-sport athlete. We just want our kids competing and making themselves better. Our state championship team was made up of kids who compete in football, cross country, basketball, track, baseball, and tennis. We have one lifter who ran in the state cross country meet, played football in the fall, and was on all three relays that advanced to the regional track meet, as well as finished second in his weight class at the state powerlifting meet.

As a relentless competitor, his success would not be possible if he did not follow the process of hard work, recovery and have tremendous support from his family. This is what we want from every kid in our program, no excuses, just compete!

In closing, I have been blessed to be a part of powerlifting for 25 years as a coach and have made great relationships with kids and coaches.

I have been surrounded by great administrations who support and love kids. I appreciate each one of them as well as all the athletic directors and coaches I have had the honor to serve beside.

Powerlifting has made a tremendous impact on my life as a coach and I am honored to be a part of one of the STRONGEST sports in Texas.

TRAINING THE

HIGH SCHOOL POLE VAULTER

W

hile there is the certain build when it comes to looking for a pole vaulter at the high school level, the best thing about this sport is that vaulters come in all shapes and sizes. Look at the professional vaulters for example. Sam Kendricks, the American record holder in the men's pole vault is 6-foot-1 and weighs 175 pounds. His personal record in the pole vault stands at 6.06 meters, or 19'8 in feet and inches. On the other hand, Renaud Lavillenie, the former world record holder in the men's pole vault from France, is 5-foot-9 and weights around 150 pounds. His personal best in the pole vault is 6.16 meters, or 20'2 in feet in inches. Therefore, while there is a certain build to look for, anybody who is willing to work hard and stay consistent with training can be successful in the sport of pole vaulting.

So, what are the factors you should look for when picking an athlete to pole vault? The most important are speed and being coachable. The pole vault is arguably one of the most technical everits in track and field. While having a kid with plenty of speed will make it easier to progress through the motions, willingness to learn is a far more important aspect.

Successful vaulters are not made over night. It takes plenty of practice and repetition in order to learn certain concepts and clear high bars. Your athletes will have to be dedicated and bought in to what you are teaching them. Let's discuss how to start.

When first starting with a high school vaulter, it is important to establish your expectations with the vaulter. This is a sport

where if one moving part goes wrong, the whole jump will be messed up. Therefore, I always explain to the athlete exactly what we will be doing that day. On day one, it is important to teach a vaulter how to jump with a pole. There is a very safe and easy way to accomplish this. Have the athlete grab a small pole and hold it vertically next to their body. Next, have them reach as high as they can with their left hand, take a couple steps back until their left hand is about level with their face, place the pole on their shoulder, grab the pole with their right hand at their shoulder, and then let go of their left hand. This is where they will grip with their right hand for the next step. Next, have them place the pole in the back of the box and take three to four steps backward. Then, holding at the same place with their right hand, have them run three steps and jump into the pit. Have the athlete repeat this until the athlete is comfortable with jumping into the pit while holding a pole, and you as the coach are comfortable with moving your athlete to the next step. Regardless of skill level, this is something that my athletes do as part of their warmup anytime we jump. This drill is commonly called a "one ann drill."

The next step will require the vaulter to be confident with taking three steps and jumping into the pit. Once you have reached this point, have the vaulter take the same three steps with the same grip but have them swing their body and try to touch their feet to the top of the pole. This step usually requires plenty of repetitions for the vaulter to accomplish it correctly. This drill is commonly called a "pop up drill." This is another drill that I have every vaulter do prior to jumping no matter their skill level. It is important to coach these basic drills in every vault practice because it reminds the

vaulter what they need to be doing when they move back and start vaulting. For beginner vaulters, you can do these two drills and slowly move the vaulter back one step at a time once they get comfortable at their current stage. Remember, teaching the pole vault is a marathon, not a sprint. It will be beneficial in the long run to make sure that your athletes can do these drills correctly before moving them back to jump.

Once an athlete has accomplished being able to jump off the ground and swing to vertical, it is important to teach them what to do with their hands. A way to teach this part of the vault is with a drill called "startcurl-press drill." Place your athletes on the goal line of the football field and have them practice the following motions while holding the pole with one hand in a downward position. "Start" is the motion of having the athlete take the pole from the downward position to moving the hand up to the hip. "Curl" is the motion of having the athlete curl the pole to where their hand on the pole is now curled to the ear. "Press" is the motion of having the athlete fully extend their hand above their head with their arm as close to the ear as possible like they are planting the pole. Having an athlete master these motions will allow the athlete to be prepared to plant the pole when you move back to a longer run.

Another concept that gets overlooked in the vault is only jumping at the pit. While getting experience at the pit is beneficial, it is far more beneficial to get away from the pit and on the track or the football field.

Equipping your athlete with the physical tools they need is the best way to ensure their success as an adept vaulter, getting on the track and/or football field will do just that. A great way to ensure that a vaulter is comfortable running from longer distances with a pole is doing pole runs on the track. Place a rolled-up towel on the ground and extend a tape measure out. Have the athlete go from the same distance they would go from if they are jumping at the pit. Then have them run and plant the pole into the towel like they would be jumping into the pit. Doing pole runs allow the athletes to only focus on the run. If an athlete has a good run, it will make the next steps easier to accomplish.

Finally, your beginner vaulter should be ready to get some jumps in at the pit. Depending on the time of year will determine where the athletes' steps should be at. If it is January and your school just got the pit out, have the athlete run from six to ten strides and catch the athlete's step. Once the athlete's step is on, have them jump and start to work on the athletes form from a short run. Always remember, if a vaulter cannot hit the positions they need to from a short run, they will not be able to accomplish it from a long run either. As I stated before, learning the vault is a marathon, not a sprint.

While the vault is a highly complicated event with many different moving parts, it is arguably one of the most interesting and fun events in track and field. For many coaches, it may seem like a scary event to learn, but there are many resources available that will prove to be extremely beneficial for your vault program. I can assure any coach that if they follow the basic advice in this article, it will build a good base for their vault program moving forward. Always remember, the goal in the pole vault should be to jump the highest, in the safest way possible.

DEFENDING THE SHORT GAME SLAPPERS

A

s a former baseball player who transitioned into the world of softball almost 10 years ago, the first thing that jumped out at me was the speed of the game. Softball is a game that is predicated on putting pressure on the opposing defense by doing things such as bunting, slapping, and baserunning at a rate in which I had never seen as a baseball player. I quickly saw the need to adjust my thought process and transition to a mindset that if offensively we can do these things, we can rack up runs at a breakneck pace. As I began to try to research ways to implement this type of play into my own team's game plan, I had the realization that not only do I want my teams to do this offensively, I also better research and find different ways to defend these types of things if I want our team to be successful!

Everyone loves the long ball, and we often stress launch angles, exit velocities and all of the things that make it possible to hit the ball out of the 54

park. While that is nice not every player is built to do that, in fact most of the players especially early in their career can't do that on a consistent basis.

Enter the short game, while your players may not be able to launch a ball 225 feet, they most likely can lay a bunt down, take extra bases on the base path and execute all the things we ask of them in the “short game”. I will preface this by saying there are a number of varieties of ways to defend the short game and I will not say one is better than the other. Often you have to look at your teams and see what they are capable of doing before you try to implement different defensive strategies. For me I have had success with the strategies I will discuss at all levels and with players of all ability levels.

Defending a slapper is something that we place great importance upon, we all know they can cause so much havoc once they step in the box! Ultimately, they are slapping because they are fast!!! Utilizing OCTOBER 2021

their speed by bunting or slapping and trying to get on base in any manner possible so that they can then steal bases and put pressure on a defense.

Too often with high school aged or younger players, pressure will cause them to make one, two, five errors and the flood gates open. So, I asked myself how can we adjust defensively to stop this? As I dove down the wormhole that is the internet and videos and grilling other coaches here is my conclusion...

Align your defense to fill the holes in which a slapper tries to exploit, and then execute a pitching strategy to help play into that defensive alignment. Much like the shift does in baseball, our strategy is based on eliminating certain areas of the field to try and defend and call pitches that aid in that process. Below is what we refer to as our regular slap defense: In this alignment we bring our second baseman up to cover the first base line on a bunt as well as fill the hole that slappers will try to hit on the right side of our defense, we drop our first baseman back behind the base and off the line a little bit, they will cover the area behind where the second baseman is aligned as well as cover first on a bunt. third base and shortstop play in and we shade all of our outfielders to the left field line and play in a few steps. Then the most important part of this is the pitchers need to keep the ball low and away! If they miss up or in, it's TROUBLE! In this alignment we have taken away a large number of balls in play that would otherwise OCTOBER 2021

would be hits. Often at times when we get in this alignment, slappers will try to adjust and just swing away rather than slap, I think this is also a win for us because now we have a player or team that is stepping away from the game plan they had and are doing something they may not be as comfortable with. Again, we consider this a win in our book.

The second defensive alignment we use is what we refer to as slap flip defense, basically it is a mirror of our regular slap defense. When you face a team that has multiple slappers and they stack them back to back it can cause problems especially when the first one reaches first base safely. The only adjustment is we bring our first base man up and drop our second baseman back and closer to second base. We do this when there is a runner on first base. If we stayed in the regular slap defensive alignment then we would be begging the runner on first to steal second as it would be almost impossible to have our shortstop make it over to cover second on a throw down, and in turn if we did then the slapper at the plate would just poke it through the hole the shortstop vacates when trying to cover second. The second adjustment here is the pitcher will have to cover the first base line on a bunt so that the 1st baseman can stay back and cover first. As with the first defensive alignment the pitcher is still working low and away.

Our last adjustment is something we call slapstack. Here, we make several adjustments to really ensure we take away even more areas of the field a slapper may try to exploit even when we execute our low and outside pitching strategy. We use this one out of necessity, in our district this season we face Prosper Rock Hill who has speed all over the line up and several players who can slap. As we began to put a strategy in place for them I fell back on something I had only seen two other times. The first time I saw this was in 2019 when I was the head coach at Rusk High School and we had two young ladies who were pretty dang good slappers.

those cases. Carthage was the first I saw do it then shortly thereafter I noticed the University of Texas doing the same thing and it was at that point that we decided to give it a try. In this alignment we bring our Center fielder in and move her into an area left of 2nd base, we take our Right Fielder and shift her over to centerfield. Everyone else in the same alignment as they were in the regular slap defense. Now, we have a center fielder who can cover that area behind the pitcher and shortstop that the slappers will try to pop the ball over and into. We had major success when we did this and it is something we will continue to use and tweak as needed.

In our district we faced Carthage and Coach Rob McFall who in my opinion is one of the best! He implemented this alignment against us and it was successful in helping slow and almost eliminate these two ladies from our offensive game plan. Now, like most people when I saw this I was taken back a bit and wondered why in the world would anyone do this, and there is no way this can really work! Well as often happens and I hate to admit, I was definitely wrong there! As you will see there is absolutely no one in right field in this alignment. As often happens in coaching the ideas we use that turn out the best are most too often not our own, we see something like a drill or alignment we like and want to try and see if we can have success using it. This is one of

I am sure there are a number of other alignments and strategies out there that I have yet to see that work just as well in defending against a slapper.

While I am the first to admit these take some time to implement and you may hear people say it's not worth messing with, it may be one of those things that can win or lose you a game and when that happens it's always worth it. THSCA HALL OF HONOR RULES OF ENTRANCE 1. Anyone considered for the Hall of Honor shall have been an active member of the THSCA in the following brackets: A. 1930-35 - must have been a member for any one year.

B. 1936-45 - must have been a member for any five years C. 1946-present - must have been a member for a min. of 15 years.

2. Should have contributed to the association.

3. Should have contributed to the coaching profession.

4. Any coach who is a member of the THSCA or retired coach who is an exmember of the THSCA may submit a coach for consideration by sending a letter to the Texas High School Coaches Association.

Once an individual is nominated, THEIR name will remain on the list with the committee for consideration. The committee meets IN MARCH so all letters should be sent to the THSCA by FEBRUARY 1st. The tentative date for the Hall of Honor Selection Committee meeting is MARCH 28, 2021.
